This week we had a marathon whitewater rafting event. Over three days, we took almost a hundred campers whitewater rafting down the Nantahala river. Rockbrook is one of only two summer camps that have a Forest Service permit to raft this river, so we are able to take full advantage of it using our own equipment and raft guides. We also have an outpost near the river where we can spend the night after (or sometimes before) rafting. What a great time we all had— excellent weather the whole time, plenty of whitewater excitement, and lots of fun with the other middlers and seniors.

It was pure magic. We were floating right in the middle of the holy Ganges, with the white water gushing from all sides. Is it the real me? I wondered. Considering I am not the dare devil type, it was hard to believe that I could convince myself to jump right in the middle of the busy river. I guess it was all about the experience. After all, we were cruising through the rapids of the river with life jackets as our only protection. And then, the sheer magic of the virgin nature around me probably made everything seem possible, even jumping into a river without knowing the S of swimming. Hello, faithful readers! My name is Emily, and I am a middler counselor reporting to you the latest happenings at Rockbrook for the week. This past weekend included such festivities as Pirate Day, Carnival, and a four hour hike to Kilroy’s Cabin. Today was the final day for all of our mini-session campers. Last night we celebrated by having a mini-banquet (which I believe was Luau-themed), followed by the traditional Spirit Fire. We will miss our mini-session campers dearly, but eagerly await the arrival of the campers for second mini-session!
There are two rafting trips going on today, a day trip and an overnight, both on the Nantahala River. Mandy and Nurse Jenny braved the white water rapids with the overnight group, complete with campfire and s’mores. Tomorrow they shall return - with a lot of interesting stories, I’m sure. Tomorrow, Lindsay Firestone and I will lead a different group of girls down the river for another day trip. I can’t wait!

I’m awaiting the pick-up by Exploradores Outdoors to go rafting for the day on the Pacuare River. I’m trying not to be anxious that it’s past 6:30 am, though if the tour company knows they have a person to pick up at hostel Pangea, I’m good to go. I checked out the adventure company website, to get a little background – looks reputable. I woke up at 5 am again today. I don’t even need an alarm clock. I’m not sure if it’s still jetlag or what. I keep losing track of what I’m spending. I bought a $22 Puma Italia Soccer shirt yesterday. Let’s see – I’ve cashed $150 in traveler’s checks, and withdrawn $100 from my checking account (really a net of $90 because I got $10 change when paying for the rafting). The rafting is probably the biggest 1-day expense I’ll have.
