I must admit I have been flummoxed on this blog lately. I previously endorsed John Edwards as the best candidate for the Democratic nomination and ultimately the presidency, and because of that I found myself with a form of writer's block. Unlike the Chinese F1 race in Shanghai, the Macau GP was pretty much a sell out with about 40,000 people filling up the few available grandstands and many more watching along the track or from the buildings overseeing the track. Unlike many F1 races, Macau GP actually has seen an increase in ticket sales !

The WTTC races were very exciting but the star event of the Macau GP is the Formula 3 International race. The very first Formula 3 race in Macau was won 25 years ago by Ayrton Senna. Michael Johnson should have demolished the 400 WR in Zurich after his 19.32 200m in Atlanta, 1996.
Unfortunately he hurt his hamstring with that 100% all out effort, so we had to wait 3 years for this to happen. Everyone expected he would break the record; it was just a matter of “when”.
Unlike Butch Reynold’s 43.29 at Zurich 1988, a straight final invitational meet, Johnson went through the usual rounds with ease. In the semi-final, he literally jogs the last 100 meters and still runs 43.95. So you knew the record was going down, but would he break 43?
And yes, he was wearing his golden spikes, the ones he made famous in Atlanta 1996.

What an interesting mixture of races fans had this past weekend in both Memphis and Atlanta.Memphis, Memphis, Memphis Busch race, how do you put it into words to even come close in describing this 4 hour race… one word, nightmare. In the 1984 Olympics 400m semi-final, Bert Cameron of Jamaica pulls his hamstring at around 120 meters, litterally slowing down to stop as others pulled away.
Then he decides “What the heck, I’m going for it”.
And go for it, indeed. Miraculously, he eventually finished 4th to advance to the finals.

The World and Olympic 4×400 meter relay record was tied at 2:56.16 set in the 1968 & 1988 Olympic finals.
The 1992 USA Olympic Trials were controversial enough with the appearance of Butch Reynolds and the IAAF “tainted” rule, thus the 400m was delayed several days. He was “named” to the relay pool, but was not selected to race.
At the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Danny Everett’s achilles problems prevented him from advancing past the semi-finals.
Enter Michael Johnson, stage left. Or third leg, that is. He was the 200m favorite (failed to advance to the finals due to food poisoning) and was selected for the 4×400m relay, even though he didn’t run the individual 400 meters at the Trials. This would set a precedence in future relay selections.
The order was even more controversial. Who should run anchor, usually reserved for the individual 400 meters Gold medalist ? Quincy Watts? He ended up running 2nd, with Andre Valmon leading

You knew something special was going to happen when Quincy ran 43.71 in the semi-finals!
An American sweep in the individual 400 meters was not possible as in 1988 (or 1968), as Danny Everett’s achilles problems prevented him from advancing past the semi-finals.
Quincy Watts destroyed the field running the classic very fast opening 200m like a true sprinter.. high knees, powerful upper body…
He makes up the stagger on several runners by 150m. Only Steve Lewis was the threat. You can view Steve Lewis’ 1988 Olympic Gold medal race here.
You can see the pain and strain over the last 50 meters. This was a 100% maximal effort.

Google Earth Blog has a great post about some 3D models showing the Red Bull Air Races using time-lapse animations.
They were created by Joey Wade over at the Keyhole BBS. A great suggestion from the post is to use the flight sim mode and try it yourself. I’ve not tried yet, but it can’t be easy.

Maurice Greene breaks the world record in 100 meters.
In June 1999 Maurice Greene set a “new” 100-meter world record of 9.79 seconds, becoming the “first” man to run sub 9.80.
Of course, Ben Johnson ran 9.79 11 years earlier at the 1988 Olympic Games, was later disqualifiled, and the new world record was reverted to Carl Lewis’ 9.92 in that same race.
Then Carl and teammate Leroy Burrell traded world records with 9.90 (1991), 9.86 (1991 World Championships), 9.85 (1994), until Donovan Bailey ran 9.84 in 1996 Olympics. Maurice deMOlished the WR by the largest margin (0.05 seconds) since the beginning of electronic timing.
