Stewart, Ku. Busch placed on probation for six races
By Official ReleaseDAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR has placed drivers Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch on probation for the first six races of the 2008 Sprint Cup Series season, a result of their on-track altercations Friday during practice for the Budweiser Shootout.Stewart, driver of the No. 20 Toyota and Busch, driver of the No. 2 Dodge, violated Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing; altercation with another competitor) of the NASCAR rule book. The probations start Wednesday, as practice begins for the season-opening Daytona 500.NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said the drivers were disciplined solely for the on-track portion of their clash, when the drivers deliberately used their cars as battering rams."We will continue to keep a check on this sport and won't let it get out o

My Rundown of the Presidential Races
I must admit I have been flummoxed on this blog lately. I previously endorsed John Edwards as the best candidate for the Democratic nomination and ultimately the presidency, and because of that I found myself with a form of writer's block. On one hand I wanted to forcefully advocate for Edwards, and on the other I not only wanted to maintain a bit of objectivity on the blog, but also did not feel it was right for me, as a Democrat, to try and sandbag the other candidates.I decided instead to discuss how I feel about the race and avoid the news chasing and commentary that clogs the mind and, in my view, destroys any possibility of making one's mind up without floods of remembered media slogans and the prevailing meme of the moment of the vapid cable news talk shows.Indeed, although the ma

TV Times - John Kernan To Host Nationwide Races In 2008?
John Kernan, formerly of ESPN and ESPN2, is said to be leaving Sirrus and the Performance Racing Network, and moving to Chicago. The story on AutoRacingSport also hinted that John could be in the anchor booth for the NASCAR Nationwide Series come February of ‘08 on ABC, ESPN and ESPN2. Those are the networks where he served his apprenticeship. When those networks lost the NASCAR broadcasts to other outlets, John did a lot of outdoor programming for the ESPN networks.

Dallas County Democrats Off To The Races: Molberg, Lackey & More
The other night, Capitol Annex was privileged to attend the Irving Democrats’ holiday party where we met a number of the outstanding candidates who are running for office in Dallas County in 2008. We were especially glad to see longtime Democratic activist Ken Molberg running for the 95th Civil District Court in Dallas County. Ken is an outstanding, respected Democratic activist and attorney, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a more impressive list of endorsements for a countywide candidate anywhere in Texas. In fact, Ken just got the endorsements of State Sen. Royce West and former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk: In their remarks to a crowd of several hundred prominent business and political leaders, many from the politically influential southern sector of Dallas, both Sen. West and former Mayor Kirk noted Molberg’s longstanding commitment to the legal profession and the Democratic Party.  Molberg is a former Dallas County Democratic Party Chair and is currently the State

Schumi races a taxi - And catches his flight!
On the verge of missing a flight, seven-time F1 Champion Michael Schumacher jumped behind the wheel of a taxi and arrived in time at the airport with his family, according to a report emanating from AFP.Taxi driver Tuncer Yilmaz, interviewed by daily Munich newspaper Abendzeitung, said Schumacher asked him if he could drive the car himself. The now-consultant at Ferrari was accompanied by his wife and two children."I found myself sitting in the passenger seat with Schumi at my side. It was incredible," explained Yilmaz. "He made incredible passes and drove at high speed through the curves," added the taxi driver, who was granted a good tip in addition to his fare. The report was confirmed to German sports news agency SID by Sabine Kehm, Schumacher's spokeswoman. She explained that the Schumacher family landed at an airport in Coburg, in central Germany, to take delivery of a dog from a breeder located in a nearby village.Daniel BASTIEN© CAPSIS InternationalTechnorati tags :Michael Sc

      BMW Prototype Races Autonomously
Top Gear got some time behind the wheel of a BMW 330i that can drive itself. How it works: a human driver takes the car around the track for a spin, while the car records data of event. Then, using military-grade GPS, the car can coordinate its position on the track with the driver data to zoom around at high, pants-crapping speeds. It’s like Knight Rider’s KITT, if David Hasselhoff preferred tweed over leather.

Trautman Will Challenge Bettencourt: Why This Is One Of The Most Important Races Of 2008
With more than 250 counties in Texas, we aren’t able to pay attention to every single county level race–even in the major urban counties. However, one race that we are sure to follow is that of the race for Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector. Why will we be following the Harris TA/C race? Two reasons: 1.) Paul Bettencourt is one of the biggest dangers to Texans’ right to vote. 2.) Because Diane Trautman can defeat him. Today, former House District 127 candidate and university professor Dr. Diane Trautman announced that she will file for the Democratic Party’s nomination to challenge Bettencourt. This is great news not only because Trautman is a great candidate and will add a lot of depth to the slate that is set to turn Harris County ‘blue,’ but also because Bettencourt could aptly be called one of the most dangerous politicians in Texas. Everyone knows that Bettencourt has serious ambition for higher office, and that he has the anti-tax, right-

Macau GP - Formula 3 Races Round Up With Photos
Macau GP is the living proof that street tracks can offer lots of excitment. Powerful Formula 3 cars with less aero and more mechanical grid combined with with world collection of racing talent is a recipe for success. Unlike the Chinese F1 race in Shanghai, the Macau GP was pretty much a sell out with about 40,000 people filling up the few available grandstands and many more watching along the track or from the buildings overseeing the track. Unlike many F1 races, Macau GP actually has seen an increase in ticket sales ! Oliver Jarvis (see the rest of the article for more photos) The WTTC races were very exciting but the star event of the Macau GP is the Formula 3 International race. The very first Formula 3 race in Macau was won 25 years ago by Ayrton Senna. The 1990 Macau race saw a fight between Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher, with Hakkinen crashing out after some sort break test stunt from Schumi (see the video at the bottom of this post). Schumi went on to win that race. Ra

New DNA Research Explains Differences Between Races
When the human DNA was first decoded in 2000, it was used to prove the remarkable similarity of people. It was stressed, that the genomes of any two human are more than 99 % identical. However today the science went further to identify the remaining less-than 1%, to explain such differences as a lighter skin of Europeans, feature of Asians to sweat less, and the resistance of Africans to certain diseases. The genetic ancestry has become of great interest for everyday citizens. Now there are available the ancestry tests, which will tell you how much of your genes come from Europe, Asia, Africa or America. The genetic differences are used during creating medicines, such as a heart-disease drug BiDil effective in Afro-Americans, and prenatal tests for Jewish for identification of prenatal genetic disorders which are rarely found in other ethnic and racial groups. However on the other hand many fear those problems which will be created by manipulating the fact that race is more than just the

      Top 10 Sprint Races - #4 - Michael Johnson 43.18 400m World Record in Seville 1999
Seville 1999. Men’s 400-meter world record. Michael Johnson should have demolished the 400 WR in Zurich after his 19.32 200m in Atlanta, 1996. Unfortunately he hurt his hamstring with that 100% all out effort, so we had to wait 3 years for this to happen. Everyone expected he would break the record; it was just a matter of “when”. Unlike Butch Reynold’s 43.29 at Zurich 1988, a straight final invitational meet, Johnson went through the usual rounds with ease. In the semi-final, he literally jogs the last 100 meters and still runs 43.95. So you knew the record was going down, but would he break 43? And yes, he was wearing his golden spikes, the ones he made famous in Atlanta 1996. Both videos are presented here. Survival was the key to victory in the Memphis and Atlanta races.
What an interesting mixture of races fans had this past weekend in both Memphis and Atlanta.Memphis, Memphis, Memphis Busch race, how do you put it into words to even come close in describing this 4 hour race… one word, nightmare. This Memphis race prompted one question that should be asked to all race fans and it so happened to be last night’s WindTunnel question of week - What is your NASCAR caution flag threshold? Do you make it to the end, and if not, when do you change the channel? The answer ironically depends on the racing series, I can stand more caution flags in a Cup Series event rather than either a Truck race or a Busch Series and even more depending upon which racetrack they are at. However while last Sunday’s Cup race at Martinsville nor yesterday’s race at Atlanta didn’t come close to my threshold, the Memphis race did (no exact number), 25 cautions is too much for this race fan to sit though period. Halfway though of 8 laps of racing followed by caution after c

      Top 10 Sprint Races - #5 - Bert Cameron 1984 Olympics 400m semi-final
Forget about Derek Redmond’s pulled hamstring in 1992 Barcelona! However, that race did show us the importance of finishing in the Olympics, and not winning. Sometimes the great performances are not held in the finals, like Mike Marsh’s 200m 19.73 seconds semi-final in Barcelona ‘92. In the 1984 Olympics 400m semi-final, Bert Cameron of Jamaica pulls his hamstring at around 120 meters, litterally slowing down to stop as others pulled away. Then he decides “What the heck, I’m going for it”. And go for it, indeed. Miraculously, he eventually finished 4th to advance to the finals. Alonzo Babers (USA) won the Gold in 44.27. Top 10 Sprint Races - #6 - 4×400m Relay World Record in Barcelona 1992
The World and Olympic 4×400 meter relay record was tied at 2:56.16 set in the 1968 & 1988 Olympic finals. The 1992 USA Olympic Trials were controversial enough with the appearance of Butch Reynolds and the IAAF “tainted” rule, thus the 400m was delayed several days. He was “named” to the relay pool, but was not selected to race. At the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Danny Everett’s achilles problems prevented him from advancing past the semi-finals. Enter Michael Johnson, stage left. Or third leg, that is. He was the 200m favorite (failed to advance to the finals due to food poisoning) and was selected for the 4×400m relay, even though he didn’t run the individual 400 meters at the Trials. This would set a precedence in future relay selections. The order was even more controversial. Who should run anchor, usually reserved for the individual 400 meters Gold medalist ? Quincy Watts? He ended up running 2nd, with Andre Valmon leading

      Top 10 Sprint Races - #7 - Quincy Watts 400m in Barcelona 1992
Barcelona 1992. The Men’s 400-meter Olympic final. You knew something special was going to happen when Quincy ran 43.71 in the semi-finals! An American sweep in the individual 400 meters was not possible as in 1988 (or 1968), as Danny Everett’s achilles problems prevented him from advancing past the semi-finals. Quincy Watts destroyed the field running the classic very fast opening 200m like a true sprinter.. high knees, powerful upper body… He makes up the stagger on several runners by 150m. Only Steve Lewis was the threat. You can view Steve Lewis’ 1988 Olympic Gold medal race here. You can see the pain and strain over the last 50 meters. This was a 100% maximal effort. Top 10 Sprint Races - #8 - Maurice Greene 9.79 in Athens 1999
Maurice Greene breaks the world record in 100 meters. In June 1999 Maurice Greene set a “new” 100-meter world record of 9.79 seconds, becoming the “first” man to run sub 9.80. Of course, Ben Johnson ran 9.79 11 years earlier at the 1988 Olympic Games, was later disqualifiled, and the new world record was reverted to Carl Lewis’ 9.92 in that same race. Then Carl and teammate Leroy Burrell traded world records with 9.90 (1991), 9.86 (1991 World Championships), 9.85 (1994), until Donovan Bailey ran 9.84 in 1996 Olympics. Maurice deMOlished the WR by the largest margin (0.05 seconds) since the beginning of electronic timing. This video is an amazing clinic on speed, power, and finess. There are only three, but they're good ones;Kentucky: Incumbent Republican Ernie Fletcher looks like he's in big trouble against Democratic former Lt. Governor Steve Beshear, who has led by double digits since he won the primary back in May. Lean DemocraticLouisiana: An open seat is the best hope for the Democrats, and even thought it's open, Rep. Bobby Jindal of Metarie is way ahead, but don't count Chalmette State Rep. Walter Boasso out just yet. If it goes to a runoff, Boasso has a shot. Not a very good one though. Lean RepublicanMississippi: Haley Barbour is too popular here, he should be on the Republican VP shortlist or even the 2012 Presidential candidate shortlist should they loose next year. The only Democrat running is John Arthur Eaves, Jr, a pro-life, anti-gay marriage Democrat who has declared; “I am a Democrat because I am a Christian.” It may play well in conservative Mississippi, but conservatives down there have no issue with Barbour.
