It is 7 weeks from Passover. Shavuot is derived from the Hebrew for 'seven.'   The sages teach that Sinai was chosen because it belonged to no nation so that the teachings in the Torah could belong to all humankind. The whole of Torah has been distilled to: "What is distasteful to you, do not do to your fellow."   As a rabbi, I am often consulted with situations involving human conflict. Genesis 37:14 asks us to: "look into the wholeness" of your fellows. We are not to look at their defects.   It is human nature to

RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL: JEWISH SPIRITUAL RENEWAL: MEDITATION: CONSCIOUS CONTACT WITH GOD   Dear Chaverem:   Marco's question (below) about how we meditate and hear God is an important one. It is frankly what Jewish Spiritual Renewal  brings us to. It is part of developing a personal relationship with Ha Shem.   It is a question which I was planning to delve into much later in the class.   But let me touch on some salient points today.   As Jews we are a 'listening' people. The watch words of our faith are in the Shema, "Hear, O' Israel". When we all stood at Mt. Sinai listening to the Ten Utterances (Commandments) , we said ,"We will do, and we will listen." (na'aseh ve-ni'shema - Exodus 24:7)   But we have forgotten how to liste

So the other monotheistic religions, including the Catholic Church, have the right to do the same thing, and no one should feel offended. Any other attitude toward the Gentiles would block them from encountering the one God revealed to Israel in the Torah. The Catholic prayer manifests the same altruistic spirit that characterizes the faith of Judaism. The kingdom of God opens its gates to all of humanity: when they pray and ask for the swift coming of the kingdom of God, the Israelites express the same degree of freedom of spirit that impregnates the papal text of the prayer for the Jews (better: "Holy Israel ") to be recited on Good Friday.I will explain myself. RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL : TALMUDIC DISCOURSE: PASSOVER, EXODUS, MOSES' SPIRITUAL AWAKENING    Shalom Talmudim:   It has been posited that the whole of Genesis is to lead our people to commit the sin against their brother Joseph, to eventually get the clan of Israel, into Egypt, and into slavery. This slavery would eventually have them yearn for liberation and acceptance of Torah.   Hence Moses, a Levite son of the Israelite clan, with an Egyptian name, grew up in the house of Pharaoh, as a prince of Egypt. The Torah has to have him have an national  awakening and identify with his people. Hence the verses of Exodus 2:11-15, has Moses refer to his fellow Israelites as ''brethren'' twice, and for the first time Moses actually sees their burdens and suffering.

RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL: TALMUDIC DISCOURSE: PASSOVER AND THE AFIKOMAN
RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL: TALMUDIC DISCOURSE: PASSOVER AND THE AFIKOMAN   Shalom:   "Today, we are used to the idea that the afikoman is a piece of matsah thatis standing in for a piece of the Passover sacrifice of lamb.  Whenthe Temple stood, groups would buy into shares of lamb and everyone in the group would eat a portion as the last thing they tasted during the Passovermeal. In the Yerushalmi Talmud, however, we have several alternative definitions:What does the term afikoman mean?'Rabbi Simon said in the name of R. Inanini bar R. Sisay:  Kinds of musicplayed as entertainment after dinner.Rabbi Yochanan said: Kinds of sweet things eaten after the meal to whetone's thirst for further drinking. Samuel said: For example, the mushrooms and pigeons of Hananiah b

      Rabbi Goes to Hawaii
A Jewish congregation in New York honors its Rabbi for 25 years of service by sending him to Hawaii for a week, all expenses paid. When he walks into his hotel room, there's a beautiful girl, nude, lying on the bed. She says, "Hi, Rabbi, I'm a little something extra that the president of the board arranged for you."The Rabbi is incensed. He picks up the phone, calls the President of the Temple Board and says, "Greenberg, what were you thinking? Where's your respect? I am the moral leader of our community! I am very angry with you and you have not heard the end of this."The girl gets up and starts to get dressed. The Rabbi turns to her and says, "Where are you going? I'm not angry with you."Hawaiian VacationThe Perfect HusbandDead CowFree Pair of Pastry Kicks

RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL:CHUMASH CANDESCENCE: A STILL SMALL VOICE: FORWARD
RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL: CHUMASH CANDESCENCE: A STILL SMALL VOICE: FORWARD   God speaks to all us all the time with a 'still small voice.' as he did to Elijah. (1 Kings 19: 12). The Hebrew word for Prophet is Nevi, which is derived from the word for 'open.' We need to be an open channel to be able to hear God.   If we are blocked with ego, pride, resentments, fears, selfishness, and belligerent denial of God, we will not hear a word from God. God never turns his back on us, but we, with false pride, or 'righteous anger,' turn our faces from Him. When we do so, who are we facing?   God took us out of Mitzraim, the land of Egypt, the land of the 'narrow space', because that is exactly what the Hebrew word for Egypt means. Yet how many of us have put ourselves ba

Just joking. Cuz, I don't even know a joke like that. Actually, now that I think about it, I don't really know any jokes to tell. I think the only joke I can come up with on the drop of a hat is a very old one that is a little itty bitty bit sexual in nature and ends with "We're all going to Hawaii, we're all going to Hawaii!" but you have to actually see the person telling it and what they
