French outrage at Rwanda genocide accusations
Rwanda, the tiny land-locked African country smaller than Switzerland, has accused France, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, of complicity in the killing of a million men, women and children in the genocide of 1994. The accusation was made in a report prepared over two years by Rwanda's public prosecutor, Jean Mucyo, who took testimony from 166 witnesses. France has responded by cond

      Rwanda, Genocide, and Self-Education
I know this is old news, but it was a huge story during my hiatus. At the time, I wound up stumbling upon this outstanding post by the always magnificent hilzoy at Obsidian Wings. The post itself is well worth a read because of the way in which it so utterly dispels any notion that Hillary Clinton pushed for intervention in Rwanda. But that's not really why I'm bringing this up now.I have always had something of an understanding of what happened in Rwanda, probably a better understanding than most Americans. But that understanding was extraordinarily limited to what was reported at the time in our media outlets. I've always known the raw data of what happened, and somewhere in the dark recesses of my brain I remember hearing about the tens of thousands of bodies found washed up on the

Had he listened to his wife, Clinton said, things might have been different."I believe if I had moved we might have saved at least a third of those lives," he said. "I think she clearly would have done that."He went on to explain how America, which did intervene in the former Yugoslavia, could only take on so much at once. But not acting in Rwanda, he suggested, was a mistake his wife wouldn't make.Asked about that claim Hillary said:It is. It is true. And, you know, I believe that our government failed. We obviously didn't have a lot of good options. It moved very quickly. It was a difficult, terrible genocide to try to get our arms around and

The heroes of Rwanda are very, very few. I am sure that Annan, amongst others, is literally haunted by people hacked to death. That would be very African. The agreement has received universal support across the Kenyan blogosphere, although the still unresolved issues which it throws up, mainly to do with the Constitution, worry some.Gordon Brown made a particularly patro

Paris Hilton’s Trip to Rwanda Postponed
“Due to the restructuring of the Playing for Good Foundation, the philanthropic trip to Rwanda that the foundation had previously planned with Paris has been postponed,” the children’s charity said Thursday in a statement. A staffer for Andy Gelb, a spokesman for the organization, said he was unavailable for comment. The 26-year-old socialite - who has promised to use her celebrity status for good causes - was supposed to pack her bags for the African country next month. On her itinerary: visits to schools and health-care clinics. “I’m scared, yeah. I’ve heard it’s really dangerous,” Hilton told Newsweek magazine earlier this month. “I’ve never been on a trip like this before.” Hilton announced the mission in September, several months after serving a 23-day jail sentence for violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. “There are a lot of bad people in L.A. By BLAIR SODEN Oct. 19, 2007 — The pictures are everywhere — celebrities dressed down in earth-tone T-shirts and jeans, covered in dirt and looking incredibly out of place among a group of villagers in some Third-World country; it’s a far cry from the red carpet. Now Paris Hilton says she, too, is jumping on the humanitarian aid bandwagon as she plans her upcoming trip to Rwanda. Some are questioning Hilton’s motives for linking up with a humanitarian aid organization, wondering if she’s only doing it in effort to revive her tarnished reputation, or if she is truly involved in the charity Playing for Good’s cause. Hilton’s recent entrance into the world of charitable giving raises the question: Are celebrities lending more than just their names to a cause, or is it all about the photo-op? Celebs and Caus

Rwanda Genocide Was Predicted By A High School Project 15 Years Ago
15 years ago, a group of students under a teacher named Tim Walz had predicted the Rwanda's genocide.  Tim taught at Alliance High School in Neb.  Tim assigned a project to his students, and the assignment was to figure out why people of the world committed the genocides.  Tim also asked the students to choose a country from the list of countries that would most likely be committing a genocide.  The students picked Rwanda, and a year later the prediction came true.  Rwanda was a genocide, and the people who were behind the killing of the Rwanda's president might have the same idea as the students in Tim's classroom.  They knew how to stir up the pot in Rwanda by killing off the president, and this allowed the Hutus committed a genocide by killing 800,000 Tut
