A rumor that's been floating around the web lately is that Google will offer RSS feeds for new results in basic web search. Today Search Engine Land confirmed that Google will "soon" offer this functionality. Why is this big news? Because there's no better way to keep track of new mentions of a company, person or concept online than through RSS.As Search Engine Land's Matt McGee points out i

You've probably heard of the term RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, but you've never really gotten around to figuring out what it really means. Today we will walk you through an introduction of what RSS feeds really are, and how to set up the use of RSS feeds using an RSS reader, using a web application made available by Google, meaning no third party programs need to be downloaded or installed.

One of the biggest changes to take place on the Internet recently has been the growth of RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds. The Subscribers see when a site has been updated and sends them information instead of waiting for them to come to the site to see it for themselves. If my blog is the only blog that you read, then you probably don't need to learn about RSS feeds. However, if you read at least 2 or 3 blogs and any news sites or other sites that are updated regularly, then using RSS feeds and reading your blogs in a reader will save you a lot of time.Once again, as I did in my post about del.icio.us, I am going to let the makers of the "Common Craft" videos help explain how to subscribe to blogs and websites to you.Now that you understand the process, you can see that on the right side of my blog, right below the Google search bar, is my RSS widget. Blogs are clearly the darling of the Web 2.0 era in terms of the way we communicate with each other and the speed with which information can travel through the interconnectedness of the whole blogosphere. But RSS is the real innovator of Web 2.0, and as such is grossly undervalued.

What is a Feed (RSS/ATOM)?
Feeds are an easy way for you to stay up to date on all your favorite websites.
You simply use the “feed” link located on the site and enter it into your “feed reader.” Your feed reader then checks those sites regularly to see if there is any new content.
You DON’T have to visit each site! The information comes straight to your feed reader.

Have you noticed the orange icon above? You might already have seen this icon in many other sites. This icon is the universally recognized standard symbol of RSS feeds. The acronym, RSS, stands for "really simple syndication." RSS feeds allow the contents of sites or blogs to be automatically published in other sites or feed readers without the need for manually posting the contents. For instance, if your blog is subscribed to MyBlogLog, the contents of your blog are partially displayed on this site. This is made possible by the RSS feeds of your blog site. The RSS feeds are also responsible for allowing your site to be easily indexed by search engines such as Google. If you are using Blogger/Blogspot services, the default RSS feed of your blog is called "Atom." Try clicking the "Atom" link found at the bottom-most part of the post body of your blog. Clicking the said link will open a new page that displays the contents of your blog, minus the widgets and layout design. This page is know

Methods to promote your feedsIf you select to syndicate your website content through RSS feeds, the first step you should do is create them. You have many alternatives, starting from manual coding to RSS feeds generators usage. In order to obtain the best visibility for search engines spiders, you must have in mind a few basic rules. On a single page of your website, you must provide all available RSS channels. Beginning from the channel title and description, you must select representative keywords or key phrases that will accurately describe your feeds' content. You must then submit this page to search engine and link directories. You can also submit your feeds to feeds search engines, such as Feedster for example. The benefits of submitting RSS feeds to search engines is reflected in one way links to your website, which means an increased visibility for search engines robots. After your feeds are republished by other webmasters, you should detect and link to them.In this way, you wil

You know when you are on holiday, and you come back, and you say “Catch up!”, you spend about a day telling tales (after the response from Monday’s post, a small round up of what I’ve been doing will be up on Friday), swapping stories, getting abreast (teehee) of the news? Well, it has to be done with RSS feeds. So imagine my dismay when I saw this when I returned.
Or do I have to catch up? You see, what purpose would it make if I caught up? Would I gain anything? Or would it be more worthwhile wiping the slate clean and starting afresh. What do you think?
Why I Should Catch Up
The main reason for catching up would be that I would catch up on awesome posts, tips that I can use, or cool new things that have occurred. For example, a quick check of my “must read” bloggers (i.e. physically visited the site, rather than read them in RSS), meant I saw Jem’s ace redesign.
The other reason is that if I comment on old posts, it’s more likely to
When creating your RSS feeds it’s recommended to optimize for search engines as you would your website or blog.
Below are 8 simple steps to help you optimize your RSS feeds:
*The title for the feed must contain keywords relating to the content. Ensure your content and titles are relevant.
*Try to emphasize keywords in your link text. Search engines typically use the text in the feeds internal links to help identify the keywords to use for your RSS feed.
*Always be the first to subscribe to your own RSS feed. You need to know what you readers are seeing; also this is a good way to experiment with your feeds format.

Adding an rss feed to your website is not as difficult as most people believe. The great thing about adding RSS feeds to your website is that the feed can keep your page content updated automatically since you are ‘streaming’ information directly from another website to your page! The method of adding RSS feeds discussed below involves the use of PHP and HTML.To get started with streaming an RSS feed, you need to dwnload a package called RSS2HTML which makes it easy to add feeds to your website. You can download the RSS2HTML package from http://www.feedforall.com/download/ Once the files are unzipped, upload the php file rss2html.php to your server.RSS2HTML uses templates to define how the news feed should be displayed, so you will also have to upload the template file included in the package to your server (template1.html). Once those files have been uploaded, loading an RSS file is easy!Choose the HTML file you would like the RSS file to be loaded in, and rename the file to have an

We've recently added some RSS feeds to make it easier to keep track of changes made to the ProductCritic site. This is an easy feature to add extra value to your site and with Rails it's quite easy. There a number of ways to do this but I decided to use a straight forward method of using an XML view.First step is to create a new method in your controller. For the home page feed which provides updates on the latest product reviews on the site, I added an 'rss' method to the PageController class that looked something like this:def rss@products = Product.find(:all, :order => 'created_at desc', :limit => 20)render :layout => falseendNow all that is needed is to create a 'app/views/page/rss.rxml' file to create the RSS feed. In this example I used this:xml.instruct! :xml, :version => '1.0', :encoding => 'utf-8'xml.rss('version' => '2.0') doxml.channel doxml.title "Latest Products from ProductCritic"xml.link(request.protocol + request.host_with_port + home_path)xml.descript
