I had to take a break from my dolls for a few days, I have so many things in my line of fire I was getting to frustrated trying to work on one and not the other. So I put them all off to the side and said nuts to it. I'll just do something totally different for a few days and get some perspective back for the dolls. I was over on Saltspring Island last Saturday and picked up some beautiful

      The Canada Geese Quilt
The Canada Geese Quilt—by Natalie Kinsey-Warnock, Illustrated by Leslie W. Bowman Boo recently read The Canada Geese Quilt after I pre-read it for him. I was a bit concerned that he might feel a bit sad reading some of it, since illness of a grandparent is a topic, but it was such a special book, I felt the benefits of this lovely book outweighed the concern. Cutter Quilt - What Does This Phrase Really Mean?
I’ve been obsessed by vintage quilts for the last decade. I love the history of old fabrics and quilts and I became an eager student on characteristics and significance of each kind. Information about most types of quilts is pretty straightforward, but I still find cutter quilts to be very subjective and mysterious. That’s because [...]

      Seoul International Quilt Festival 2007
Today my husband took a "vacation" day to take me to the Seoul International Quilt Festival. It is held October 12th - 14th in the Gymnastics Building on the Olympic Park grounds. The festival features quilters from Korea, Japan and Taiwan. Our Korean language teacher told me about it since his sister owns a quilt store in Seoul and would be attending. He was our guide and got us to the right building. He also introduced us to his sister and a number of other quilters who were attending and who had quilts in the Festival.I met a friend of his sister's who spoke English very well. She had lived in the United States in Oklahoma City and Washington DC. It was while she lived in Washington DC that she discovered quilting. She does her quilts completely by hand and doesn't even own a sewing machine. She told me that she is afraid if she did have a sewing machine, she would be tempted to do a lot less hand stitching. She said that a quilt usually takes her two years to complete. She also t

Cool Weather Doesn't Mean I Can Quilt
I finally got the nice cool weather I'd been asking for. FINALLY! Now I'm in the mood to do all those crafts and stuff it's been too hot to do! I'd love to make a baby quilt but I am just not sure that I know my way around a frame or a hoop or whatever you have to have to make a quilt. Now, I'm on the lookout for quilt patterns for babies. I'm too impatient to sew by hand, but the sewing machine should move things right along if I could just figure out how to keep the bobbin thread from getting all twisted up. Just because it's cooler outside doesn't mean that my needlework will improve, does it?

Introducing my very first Quilt Kit, Picnic in the Park! My  shop is now open! Though I had spent a great deal of time building a larger e commerce store, I realized that I wasn't ready yet. In many ways. Bonfire Vineyards is growing into a full fledged business, and Ryan and I need to focus on crushing grapes, designing labels, attending and pouring at tasting events and my favorite: developing our palettes. But, I promise to keep my esty shop full of treasures from my Antiquing trips in Oregon, or small kits I put together for quilts, table tops and pillows. Thanks to all my the readers who have expressed encouragement and support through out the summer as I struggled to open the shop.

      Our special quilt!
Very exciting moment right now!  Our special quilt made up of various fabric scraps from friends, family, and some we’ve purchased over the last few years is now completed! It’s our quilt.  It has blues, yellows, oranges, greens, reds.  There’s bits with gators, lions, butterflies, flowers, solid pieces too.  It’s bright and obnoxious, but we all really love it.  We have our own quilt.  Ours! It’s our quilt, made by us!  No one else, just us. I think my husband will want one of his own now hehe.  It’s pretty awesome, if I may say so myself!  Thanks, I will!  It is pretty awesome! The binding was a LOT easier to do than I’d expected.  It still took about 3 hours to sew bindings on, but the next quilt will go much faster I think.  It wasn’t all that bad though, part of that was actually re-ironing the bias tape we’d made so it was just folded in half rather than set up double folded. One book suggested seaming it down, fol

A quilt - then and now
Someone mentioned today (from within the village) that long ago, there were quilt pieces.  Some say blue, some say they weren’t blue but they don’t know what color the bits were.  One is absolutely certain the quilt was to be made for us.  A few argue that it proves that the mom loved us, that she couldn’t have hurt us ever if she was going to make a quilt just for us, right? The quilt never got made.  That has made so many sad, particularly the young ones who haven’t bad memories of her.  They remember very little of the mom, but what they do remember it is all good.  Lunches, breakfasts being made, watching birds together, things that are nice, safe, happy.  That’s a lot of commas used there. Another says they offered to put the quilt together, apparently that resulted in a lot of yelling.  Lots of degrading comments about the ability to survive, comments of how crazy we are, comments refering to us as a “we”.  There were a lot of ti

Finding the blocks for an unfinshed quilt stuffed in the Christmas decorations, leads to Elm Creek Manor stories from the antebellum era, through the Great Depression and World War II, to the present. All of the quilt blocks are stories of their creators and their times. As Sylvia and Sarah explore the foundations of the Christmas traditions of Elm Creek Manor, they find that though our traditions may differ, our memories are all about family and friends and the simple virtues of joy and hope buoyed by the spirit of giving.I especially enjoyed this volume in the series. The presentation of our Christmases and the memories they evoke went from bitter-sweet to joy to sorrow to humorous to contemplative. Nancy Crow: Quilting the seventy-five thousand dollar quilt
Sometimes you catch things reading local news that just throws you for a loop. A Baltimore, Ohio woman named Nancy Crow has made quilts that she has sold for $8,000 - $75,000 While studying fine arts at Ohio State in the late 1960s, she says she wanted to be a potter but became allergic to clay dust. Now her quilts sell for prices ranging from $8-thousand dollars to $75-thousand dollars and have been displayed in museums around the U-S, including the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian is Washington DC. Source Okay, for someone who accidentally fell into quilt making, this is amazing. Now, I am one of those people who never really took quilting seriously until I began reading fellow b5media blogger, Mary Emma Allen’s blog, Quilting and Patchwork. Quilting is one of those things that is very stereotyped as well. We think of little old ladies who collect scraps of fabric from over the years and sew them together and give them away to family. While these are precious to us and

She sent me a copy and I read it to the children and to the congregation during a children's sermon. It tells the true story of Martha Erskine Ricks who was born a slave in 1817 on an East Tennessee plantation. Martha's father, George Erskine, also born a slave, had his freedom purchased by a Presbyterian minister, Dr. Isaac Anderson in 1815. Dr. Anderson was an opponent of slavery and purchased George Erskine's freedom so that he could study religion. At that time Dr. Anderson was the minister of the New Providence Presbyterian Church in Maryville, Tennessee. George Erskine earned his preaching license in 1818 and preached to both white and black congregations within and outside Tennessee for twelve years. The children's book begins:Martha Ann loved one chore most. I'm sure most moms out there can relate. You have very little time to yourself. I thought it was bad before, but it's gotten even worse since my husband starting working second shift. Not only that but he has to work overtime most weekends. This weekend he has to work both Saturday and Sunday to make up for the snow day they had Valentine's Day.I just want a few hours once in a while where I'm accountable to no one. No toddler playing in the next room, no toddler sleeping nearby. I'm keeping my fingers crossed I get a little of that this week. My mom said she'd take my son for a few hours one afternoon this week. I'm sure hoping it happens. I haven't had alone time like that since Christmas Eve.Okay, now on to the template. I was playing around the other night and decided to come up with a quilt block. I picked the Maple Leaf to start. Cincinnati Sew, Quilt, Embroidery Expo Today posted by PixieCat
I just got back from the Cincinnati Expo and had a wonderful time, even though there are definitely improvements to be made. I only took one class, Emma Seabrooke's Designer Tees. It required cutting and sewing a slinky t-shirt for her to fit. The room was so small and there were so many people that all were cutting on the floor, most outside the classroom in the hallway. I didn't even cut since the slinky wasn't pre-washed but got a lot out of the class anyway. Shopping was fun. Vogue Fabrics was there (ouch!) as was the Thread Guy and several other sewing vendors I didn't see last year. I think the venue is growing out of it's current location and I am concerned that there weren't as many sewing shoppers as at the Cleveland festival. Mostly quilting. Hope this show survives. Anyway, I just had to mention that CG wore jeans because I really didn't think she owned any. They were paired with a 100% silk, lime green shell and a turquoise, silk, knee length, im

I’m going to a baby shower today.  This is the quilt I made last night for the occasion. . . .The first time Dad-to-be is pretty cool guy, and he loves Corona beer, so the colours in the quilt are inspired from that!  Plus it gave me an excuse to buy fabric with FLAMES on [...]

Original Quilt/Sewing Expo in Chantilly, VA Sep 07 posted by cindy-lou
I had planned to go to the Original Quilt and Sewing Expo in Kansas City this year, but unfortunately cannot leave town that weekend. HOWEVER, I may be able to get away in September for at least part of the same Expo in Chantilly, VA-- since I can drive there it's a little easier to plan for me, but still would require some juggling. It is September 27-29. Is anyone going to this one? The reviews on this website aren't overly great on the past Chantilly events -- does anyone out there have an opinion? Thanks! -- Edited on 8/13/07 11:15 AM --Last post by cindy-lou at Wed 15 Aug 2007 09:04:27 PM Total posts: 9 Visit PatternReview.com to read this entire topic.Shop for New Look patterns at PatternReview.com

      Quilt-As-You-Go methods posted by sewfrequent
Do you like it? Is it easy to do w/ good results? I would like to know of any easy tutorial or book on the subject. Seams (pun intended) like it would be great to machine quilt manageable sections and then put them together after. I'm just not sure how that is done!Last post by spicegirl at Wed 03 Oct 2007 09:42:24 AM Total posts: 15 Visit PatternReview.com to read this entire topic.Research Janome Sewing Machines, Sergers and Coverstitch Machines at PatternReview.com.

Tell me why I want to hand quilt? posted by Harleyjo
Ok, so this is my first experience with hand quilting. I have these cute, simple stencil for this western quilt. So I have a couple of my quilting books out, and I am trying to learn the quilters knot to start and finish my threads. Half the time I get it right, the other half I am redoing it and now I was about finished with a square and my final knot wasn't right and I am going to have to tear out those stitches and redo the square. I don't know if my wrist can take this either, I had to quit counted cross stitch because it got to hurting too bad. Is is possible to stitch these on the machine. I love the look of hand quilting but I just don't know if I can handle this. I know that in time the knots will be second nature, but seriously, my wrist is hurting already after about 30 minutes.Last post by BJ1400 at Tue 23 Oct 2007 08:01:49 PM Total posts: 17 Visit PatternReview.com to read this entire topic.Research Tacony Sewing Machines at PatternReview.com.

Quilt University posted by Lucy in Virginia
Hello, I'd like to learn to quilt. Today I stumbled across this site: Does anyone know of this site? Is it a good one? Any positive testimonials? I could not find them mentioned either in the website reviews or the classes reviews, but I'm not the best searcher. For $36.00 they have a class starting March 22nd taught by Carol Miller. I'm interested in this class, but wanted feedback from my fellow PR experts first. Thank you for any information. Here is the description of the class: "Machine Quilting can be a quick way to finish a project or just as elaborate and detailed as hand quilting. Carol Miller will take you through the basic machine quilting techniques, including both free motion and straight line designs. You will learn when to use the even feed foot and how diff

Pfaff Quilt Expression 2048 vs PQE 2058 vs Bernina Aurora 440QE posted by Zola25
Hello Everyone I love this site..it's so informative. I currently have a Husqvarna Viking Lily 545 which I'm no longer happy with. I mainly quilt and I have been practising my free motion quilting on my HV. I would love to get a new machine and am torn between the Pfaffs 2048 & 2058 and the Bernina Aurora 440QE. As far as I can see the only benefit of the Bernina is the BSR (which I have tried
