Seafood, punk rock and the activist mashup
Ok, so I've posted a few of these trash-infused seafood items (a la the fine chefs at Saatchi & Saatchi)... I've even shown the video of the activation. Little did I know that a few people in our chapter network would want to take this and run with it. They contacted me and asked me for something between permission and guidance. My words of wisdom back to them...Go.Tweak.Mutate.Act.I'm a firm

Fashion vs. Style and Punk Rock vs. Anarchy
It’s no secret that I discovered anarchy from the punk rock bands of the 1970s. Not only did I absorb the messages in their music but also the statements made by their fashions. Both were quickly adopted and studiously observed (although in as discreet a manner as possible). Thank to Sid Vicious [...]

      Punk Rock Babies
So, the other day, on Metro, I saw a baby in little mini Chuck Taylors (navy blue hi-tops). Of course, this was right after I read the Washington Post article on the history of Converse. Then and there, I decided that if I ever have a kid, she's going to have black ones, because she's going to be a total punk rock baby. So, when I was talking to my dad about my running shoes, the conversation somehow went to the awesome baby Converse, and then I noted that if I have a kid, not only will I get her these shoes, maybe she'll even have a mohawk. My dad said, "You had a mohawk."Now everything makes sense.

An Open Letter To You Stupid Punk Rock Kids
NOTE: This was originally published by me on May 8, 2007 for randomn3ss.comAll I want to do is go to ONE “punk rock” concert without having to deal with all you stupid posers! In the 80’s, it was “glue heads” and kids in the U.S. wearing Union Jack and screaming about “anarchy in the U.K.” Nowadays, it’s lame chains, horrible dye jobs, and one of 3 or 4 skate company t-shirts.Do yourself a favor, turn off your Blink-182, Green Day, and Good Charlotte for a few minutes and find a copy of the first Clash album, or maybe The Stooges, Fun House record. Now THAT’S punk! (for extra credit, check out The Ruts’, The Crack and the Bad Brains’ Black Dots)Today’s “punk rock” is simply a watered down version of what the music was meant to be. You little bastards show up in

Is Avril Lavigne Still Supposed To Be A Punk Rock Star?
I remember a few years ago when Avril Lavigne was just starting to get big, there was an interview in some tabloid that I must’ve have been reading in a waiting room or something where someone in her camp was talking about how she was originally a country singer. The studios got a hold of her and put her in trashy outfits and marketed her as the new revolution of punk. The interview also included an excerpt from a magazine article where she said she had no idea who the Ramones or the Sex Pistols were. I’ve never been too much into punk music, but even I know who the flipping Ramones & Sex Pistols are. I think I cried that day for the state of music. So the question now is, did somebody reprogram Avril? Because she’s apparently hanging out with Paris Hilton now, and the least punky thing I can imagine someone doing would be hanging out with Paris Hilton, panties or no panties. Punk Rock Warlord
I had never really taken to The Clash as a kid, so I didn’t know anything of them or Joe Strummer until 2003. I was studying music (I say studying…) back in Newfoundland and almost every night, for a long stretch, we would go to my friend’s place to play crib/guitar/chill and the music of choice always seemed to be Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros. I became hooked on them very quickly and I was excited about this band that Joe Strummer was part of… this very multi-talented collection of people that made up The Mescaleros. “Bhindi Baghee” (from Global A Go-Go) was the song that I really liked to hear in those crib sessions. It’s a conversational piece of music that starts off with Joe talking to a stranger along the high road. The stranger is looking for something to eat and wonders if they might have Mushy Peas around these parts. Joe says “Nah, but we do got…” and then he rapidly fires out a bunch of things superior t

      Where Is Today’s Punk Rock?
I became politically aware as a result of punk bands like the Sex pistols and the Dead Kennedys. Obviously, that’s where I first heard the term ‘anarchy’ as well, though it was only the first step in a long road to truly understand both the term and the philosophy behind it (not to mention deprogramming myself from the state indoctrination I was receiving at the time). With the recent acquisition of my $20 iPod I’ve started listening to more music once again and I recently downloaded a copy of the Dead Kennedy’s Milking the Sacred Cow. While I enjoy sharing the music of my youth with Z, songs like California Uber Alles and Holiday In Cambodia require extensive history lessons in order to understand the political message being delivered. Sure, songs like Jock-O-Rama still carry the same weight today they did almost 30 years ago (unfortunately), but punk was very much a music of its time. This leaves me wondering where to find music today that questions

Picture This! Indie and Punk Rock photographer Pat Graham's Incredible New Collection: "SILENT PICTURES"
I marvel at the power conveyed through photography. You aren't supposed to be able to hear images or taste the dust in a photograph of a dirty room - but it does happen. You aren't supposed to breathe in history but if the stories are told well enough - you do. Photographs of strangers aren't supposed to make you feel as if you can read their thoughts or know what's in their souls.... But it happens. Thanks to "Silent Pictures" - a collection of images from talented photographer Pat Graham, we have new photographic insight into the lives of musicians Modest Mouse, Ted Leo, Bikini Kill, Fugazi and the Shins!Hot Off the Presses:SILENT PICTURESGraham's photo collection, released just this month, captures the highlights of an incredible 19-year career. "Silent Pictures" focuses largely on emblematic stage images of punk rock and the dynamic music scene that has emerged in the Nation's capital. In D.C., Pat Graham lived and worked for a time with Dischord Records founder Ian MacKaye (

Great Debate: Is Punk Rock Dead?
Punk rock isn’t any more alive and thriving today than psychedelic rock or new wave. As far as the broader culture is concerned, it’s been dead for awhile and it ain’t coming back. Punk arose out of a very specific time and a very specific attitude. The self-satisfied winners of World War II let their culture run amok for a generation; thirty years after the War

This kind of music came into prominence during the mid 1970s in countries like Australia, United States and the United Kingdom. However like all other genres of music it is rather difficult to pin point the exact time and place of origin. The exponents of punk music were bands like The Clash, Ramones, The Velvet Underground, Dolls of New York and Sex Pistols, in fact they were considered to be the earlier vanguard of punk music. Punk rock music is very aggressive and this is clearly evident in their dress, behavior, music, aggressive attitude, mannerisms and everything else that is associated with the punk musicians. Punk rock musicians had a DIY attitude and they were not very bothered about socializing. Streetwalkers - Red Card(1976) 320kbps Punk rock ...
Streetwalkers - Red Card(1976)320kbpsPunk rock made the Streetwalkers seem like old farts, but Red Card proved (upcoming metaphor overuse intended) that they still had an ace up their sleeve. From the groove-heavy "Roll up, Roll Up" to the ferocious "Run for Cover," this is the first and last great gasp from this band. In fact, had it come a few years earlier, it could have been included along with some of the better work by Chapman and Whitney's previous band, Family. The highlight, perhaps the best reason to search out this record, is a cover of Otis Blackwell's "Daddy Rollin' Stone," which Roger Chapman absolutely sings the living sh*t out of. It's an exhilarating moment and proof positive that he has one of the great voices in rock & roll.Review by John Dougan(allmusic.com)1. Run For Cover (5:48)2. Ma An' Me Horse An' Me Rum (4:04)3. Punk Rock
You’re killing me with kindness Yes really you are And I’d rather live forever Than be suffocated by love The band raged on for what seemed like an eternity. I wondered how long I could take it. Would throwing a bottle of beer that it may draw blood be an affirmation of the band’s twisted lyrical mantras? Or was I destined for handcuffs and a jail cell because I couldn’t just ‘enjoy the good, clean fun’? I mean seriously, who’s that angry? Who has the right to be that angry? The Africans? Certainly. The Katrina-affected that got no help? Sure! A snot-nosed punk band that got fed up of mom and dad’s basement and decided that the ‘world needed to feel their pain’? Fuck no! This isn’t even punk! It’s barely even punk lite! A lop-sided tattoo and early-signs-of-anorexia physique suggest the need for a sandwich, shower and spanking (skip it if they might enjoy it). All that angst, all that Avril Lavigne wannabe bullshit that only appeals to the twelve-year-olds who

The outspoken poet/singer, who burst onto the scene in 1975 with her debut album Horses, has a new album coming out April 24 called Twelve. And what better way to celebrate than going wild in the Big Apple?
