This was a direct quote from liberal Justice Anthony Kennedy of the Supreme Court; and the four other liberal justices unfortunately agreed. I don’t understand how the highest court in our land can declare that capital punishment is too severe for raping children. This is a clear example of the fundamental differences between conservatives and [...]
Discipline can mean several things all revolving around behavior and training. Our son did something bad today that amounted to great monetary expense that affected quite a few people and one person in particular.
My wife and I do not use physical punishment. We do believe, however, in strong discipline. Besides having him recognize that he [...]
What a difference a week makes, eh...After the triumph of last weeks win over the Knights (IN Australia) the Warriors have once again slumped. Does it get any worse than losing to the Rabbitohs, currently sitting at the bottom of the table?Just when you think the Warriors have turned a corner, they put on a poor performance (yes, we're holding back...) in a game they should have won - easily. Over at the Sentencing Law and Policy blog there is an intriguing call for a town-hall style meeting on Crime and Punishment between candidates Obama and McCain, and maybe even Bob Barr (who must have some intriguing views on the topic - PardonPower is still waiting for a response from Mr. Barr). Bible Questions Answered:Is God in favor of capital punishment?Jerome L./ Hamilton, Texas Bible Answer:God is in favor of mankind living in righteousness, and doing what is right, but when He does not, judgment is at the door, and not by God's choosing, but by man's. God's covenant with Noah, would make it seem so. Judges from the Golovinsky District Court have probably presided over quite a few puzzling cases in their careers. But the case of U.S. Pastor Phillip Miles must have seemed particularly strange to observers and the general public, if not to the judges themselves. Two months ago, the 57-year-old pastor at the Christ Community Church in Conway, South Carolina, decided to bring a gift for a friend living in Perm. His idea for a present was 20 hunting rifle rounds. What was he thinking? After all, there is probably no country in the world that allows outgoing or incoming passengers to carry undeclared ammunition, whether for hunting rifles or other firearms. The decision by the court on Monday to convict Miles of smuggling came as no surprise, but the fact that he was given such a severe sent

OPINION-Crime and punishment -
The Nassau, Guardian:
There are around one thousand people in prison in The Bahamas. Is that a lot or little? How can we tell?
Compared to the 2.2 million people languishing in U.S. jails it does not sound all that many, but the population of The Bahamas barely exceeds 300,000, compared to the United States population in 2005 of 298.2 million.
Prison, what a strange thing it is. We can remember our shock as a child being told that some adults had done things so bad, that they had to be locked away for years until they knew better. We could hardly imagine anything worse. Prisons seem to belong to the age of the horse-drawn cart and the workhouse, not to satellites and the Internet. If anything, we should be phasing them out - converting the prison into

One of the signs of the breakdown of society is how it treats its vulnerable citizens. Presidential candidate, Barak Obama recently stated ( ) that if his daughters made a mistake, he would not punish them with a baby. In other words, they could have an abortion. I guess he would punish the innocent baby rather than the guilty parties. Our constitution states that we have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, but they find a way to distort the laws to fit their selfish lifestyles. This is part of the death culture that has become a part of who we are today. The real news is that it did not hurt him in the polls. It would seem that most of American society feels the same way. How long before other inconvenient persons are eliminated because they can't defend themselves.

Psalm 139:13-16 For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”Scripture is clear that it is our Sovereign Lord who is the creator of life and when that life begins. At the end of January, Israeli peace activist Uri Avnery wrote a column about Gazans breaching the wall between the Palestinian and Egyptian sections of Rafah, comparing it to the fall of the Berlin Wall. He described events preceding it, Israel preventing food, medicines, and fuel from entering Gaza in reprisal for Palestinian militants firing Qassam rockets into Israel. Noting that he had earlier written a satirical article describing the situation in Gaza as a "scientific experiment" designed to find out how long one could impose hellish measures on a civilian population before they surrender, he wrote, "It has been said before that it is dangerous to write satire in our country—too often the satire becomes reality."Avnery's article got me thinking. What if the citizens of Dallas, whi
Some people often say, "Can we apply today the same barbarous punishments which were applied long ago in the desert? Is it permissible to cut a thief's hand for five shillings? Could such things take place in the twentieth century, which regards the criminal as the victim of society and maintains that he is entitled to medical treatment rather than punishment?" How is it that the twentieth century permits the slaughter of forty thousand innocent people in North Africa but forbids the rightful punishment of one single criminal!!Woe to people from deceptive Words that often hide the truth!!So much for the twentieth century civilization and its evils. Let us discuss the concept of crime and punishment in Islam.Crime is often regarded as an individual aggression against the community. That is

Training Your Dog Through Punishment Should Be a Thing Of The Past

I got a job. Actually I got 2 jobs. I was asked by one of my student athletes from the track team to coach HS track because they could not find anyone. I applied and got the job. In submitting my application I then was on the radar to teach. A 4th grade teacher left and they wanted to replace her. I interviewed for the job and got it. Now I will be working from 7:45 to 3:00 then track practice from 3:30 to 5:30, not to mention the all day Saturday track meets. Someone mentioned the saying "If you want something done give it to a busy person?". Well now I am really busy therefore I better get it done. I will be working as a teacher until June. If that doesn't motivate me then I will go back to work next fall. I set several goals for myself to be at by this point and did not reach them. To p

Editorial ReviewsFrom Publishers WeeklyAfghanistan only uncovers itself with intimacy, and intimacy takes time," writes Chayes, a skilled but increasingly frustrated journalist, whose determination "to grasp the underlying pattern" during and after the toppling of the Taliban in late 2001 chafes against her editors' post-9/11 comfort zone. With keen sympathy for Afghanistan's indomitable people, Chayes eventually swaps NPR and its four-and-a-half-minute slots for an NGO, becoming "field director" of Afghans for Civil Society, spearheaded by Qayum Karzai, the president's brother. ACS's humanitarian work, which includes rebuilding a bombed-out village, brings Chayes into direct conflict with the warlords with whom U.S. policy remains disastrously entangled. This is the point of her engrossin
India, thanks to the unshackling of the long suppressed dynamism and competitiveness shown by India Inc, is now looking to achieve what China has done, thanks to the pride and vision displayed by its political leadership. The Chinese leadership is completely focused on taking the country forward to the top of the global heap. In the pursuit of this objective, it has recognized that corruption is the one retardant that can not only sour its dream but also stain national character in a manner that can cause unacceptable damage in the long term. In China, the nation be proud, corruption is frowned upon and deterred by capital punishment. In India, on the other hand, in the face of ever increasing scandals involving our politicians and bureaucrats, governments continue to endorse p
On Saturday we did something we have not done for a long time, we watched a movie on broadcast television. For various reasons we had never rented or bought Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds." When I saw that it was going to be on ABC Saturday night we decided to watch it. We will probably never make that mistake again. The show was to start at 8 PM. At 8 PM ABC showed 10 minutes of previews of upcoming television programs. Of those 10 minutes 5 or more were dedicated to the upcoming Sean Combs (AKA P. Diddy) show. I have no interest in seeing anything he is involved in. Call me old fashioned, but I try not to contribute to the ability of drug users to afford to refill their supplies.During the broadcast, ABC would show 8 minutes of the movie and 7 minutes of commercials in an alternating fashion. Since this went on for 3 hours I think we were sufficiently convinced that we will not watch LOST, or anything else on ABC for awhile. We were so thoroughly bothered by the b
I was totally blown away by this fantastic game! It’s got style, it’s got game play and it’s got some actual challenge to it. It’s not hard, so much as it makes you actually think about what you are doing. It’s not just a point and shoot action game, you have to think about how you can most effectively stop your enemies form stopping you first. Once you figure out what you need to do, it’s just a matter of doing it, unlike many modern shooters that seem to be more based on luck than actual thought and skill. You feel a much greater sense of accomplishment when you figure out how to beat a boss in this than you do in other games when you finally manage to live long enough to fill the bosses with enough bullets to drop a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
I could play this game for hours on end and completely lose track of the time. It’s just so entertaining. The consistently fast pace in this game keeps it very engaging and exhilarating–but be careful!

Resumption of death penalty may not be possible, says lawyer:
By KRYSTEL ROLLE, Guardian Staff Reporter-
Nassau, Bahamas:
Despite the Prime Minister's assurances that his government would do all it could to ensure the resumption of capital punishment, a seasoned attorney said that may not be legally possible.
Acknowledging that nothing has been done to address the March 2006 Privy Council ruling, which found that the mandatory death sentence was "unconstitutional," Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham said last month that the government would do its "utmost to have these legal obstacles determined" in the shortest possible time.
However, yesterday attorney Fayne Thompson said he did not know that the legal positions allow the prime minister "to even consider that unless some of these mediations are clarified."
In the face of an escalating murder rate, Bahamians have been calling for the government to do something -- with capital punishment at the top of their lists. And with the la
I came across an interesting article today in the Times. I tend to gravitate more towards legal articles because, as of now, that seems to be the avenue I am going down career-wise. We continue along the medication super highway with one of our sons. The matter is a huge issue for many families autistic and otherwise, but we reach a fork in the road, an unexpected hic-cup. As always in such situations we are caught out and ill equipped to deal with the rapid fire fall out. The best policy at such times is to deal with each child individually, each according to their own unique needs. The carefully tailored answer by an adult can prove that the road can only lead onwards and upwards.“You are not hug me?”“Sure I’ll hug you.”“No, no, no you can not be hug now.”“I thought….you want a hug later?”“No. No hugs not more.”“Oh are you too old for hugs all of a sudden?”“No.”“?” He helps me out as it’s only 5:25 in the morning.“It’s dah rule?”“It is? I could moan about why this game wasn't released outside of Japan for 7 years, but I hadn't even heard of it until a few weeks ago. So it'd be stupid for me to moan about getting this game late when I was oblivious to it for the 7 years that many pined for it. I am however still grateful to Nintendo for giving this a European release, because the game is pretty decent and satisfies my craving for a good old retro shoot 'em up. Though I think I bit off more than I could chew and got a tad more than I initially bargained for when I downloaded this from the Wii shop.Sin and punishment is retro gaming for those who like their games old skool and I mean OLD skool. Sin and punishment is like a cross between StarFox and Space harrier. That may not sound like an enticing mix for some gamers, but trust me when I say that it works well and makes for a pretty fun game. I'm already sick of typing the full name of the game, so I'll be referring to it from here on out as SaP.SaP has you contro

Drug Rehab Treatment
Choosing a drug rehab center is a decision that calls lots of quality informaiton. Nobody wants drug addiction to overtake their life to the point that rehab is the necessary step. However, the decision to go to rehab is something to look forward to, as it is the decision to rebuild a healthy life.
It is the conscious realization of a problem, and it is the first conscious step towards healing. Understanding what drug addiction entails and how it affects the user is important for healing substance abuse. As well as understanding addiction, knowing what drug rehab is will help the patient understand what he is going through and the purpose of the treatment. Lastly, the type of drug rehabilitation program is of vital importance for the patient. Understanding that a rehabilitation program is as personal as the patient’s problem will certainly help to ascertain the treatment needed for the specific patient. Drug rehabilitation must be a positive program motivating t
So I've bought myself another Virtual console title. I'd ran into a site which harped on about this game and how cool it was, so I did some research (by which I mean Googled) and read a load of reviews on this game, all of which were positive. I checked out a video of it in action and I liked the look of it, so I downloaded it. Just like that!I haven't had the chance to really sit down and play Sin and punishment extensively, but from the 10 minutes I've spent with the game I can tell you I really do like it. I was going to just bypass the whole 'I bought a game' post and just hit you with a review, but I doubt I'll be able to get one to you this evening. I wanted to let you know about this game as soon as, because it won't be up on the Virtual console for much longer.Sin and punishment was released in Japan as the N64's swan song in November of 2000. Much to the dismay of North American and European gamers it never got a Global release. This is why it's appearance on the Vir

For the first time ever this month, European and Australian Wii owners through the Wii Shop Channel will be able to broaden their horizons with a selection of great games previously only available in Japan and America. Two weeks ago was the introduction of this first Hanabi Festival and last week there was the Ninja Week. The final week of Nintendo’s special Hanabi Festival is Sci-Fi Week, go back to the future with two stunning sci-fi classics! If you want to have a snowball’s chance in hell to get Super Mario RPG and Earthbound on the Virtual Console in Europe and Australia, then you’ll buy one or more of these. Not just for future Japan-only or American-only games to be released in PAL (or NTSC) regions, but also because games like Sin & Punishment: Successor of the Earth are amazingly fun to play. Note that I can say this, because I imported the game for my Japanese N64 back in 2000.

When Leeds United entered into administration last May, they received a ten-point deduction of their current standing in the Championship and assured themselves a place in League One this season. It was a highly questionable yet shrewd move by Ken Bates, the team's chairman, especially considering that in September 2006, the manager at that time, Kevin Blackwell, announced that within a year the club would be debt free. I can understand the circumstances of a poor season taking it's toll on a club's revenue, but that's a pretty drastic toll. All suspicions aside, or maybe not, a group led by the aforementioned Bates purchased the club out of administration, despite claims that higher bids were made to KPMG who were the holding administrators. Eventually an agreement of reduced-debt payment was reached though the amount expected to be repaid is not known. It is assumed to be more than the 8% of the £35m, or £2.8m, originally agreed upon. After the Football League approved the sa
If you’re into impact sports as a means of getting fit and you’re still using a traditional punch bag for training then this interactive Fight Revolution Robot is sure to get your pulses racing as, unlike punch bags, this decidedly masochistic robot will offer you a series of routines in its bid to receive the maximum in punishment all in the name of exercise.
The brainchild of Pablo Jiang – a 22 year old designer from China – the Fight Revolution Concept Fight Robot uses music and light to offer a series of workout routines via a number of hot zones placed strategically across the robot’s body which light up as targets for your aggression in randomised sequences, with the robot timing your reactions and the power of your impacts accordingly.
According to the designer, the flight robot – which is a concept work at the time of writing - is even capable of a self-defence mode where the device will offer a series of moves designed to make targeted impacts harder to achieve, t
Today is the fifth day since Israel declared the Gaza Strip an "enemy entity" as a result of an increase in rocket attacks, cutting off electricity and fuel to an area where over 70% of the 1.5 million residents live in poverty. Aid agencies and humanitarian groups have denounced this move as collective punishment, forbidden by international law. Israel has been condemned by many world leaders - most notably the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon - for its extreme policies toward the Palestinian people.

It has also engaged in repeated treaty violations while ignoring both the laws of other countries and international courts. This episode explores issues such extradition, consular law, and growing world opposition to the death penalty. Early America
Colonists brought the practice of capital punishment with them from England. Many of the crimes that had been death-eligible in England - robbery, burglary, arson, counterfeiting, theft, and of course murder – were quickly made capital in the common law. The colonies also executed people for other crimes, including witchcraft, aiding a runaway slave, forgery, and concealing a birth. At this time, there were no prisons, only small local jails incapable of containing criminals for long periods of time. Death was one of few punishments available in the event of a serious crime.
The first known execution in the colonies was that of George Kendall, who was shot to death in Virginia in 1608 for espionage. Most early executions were carried out by hanging, but such methods as breaking on a wheel, hanging in chains, gibbeting, bludgeoning, and burning at the stake were also employed. The first person executed in North Carolina was likely George Senneca, hung on August 26,
I wish I could get myself to stop staying up until midnight and go to freakin’ BED already! Even though the kids have been back in school for a week and a half now, I still find myself staying up until midnight or later - watching TV with Paul, doing stuff online, reading…and then, I’m SO tired in the morning, I’m worthless until about lunchtime. Why can’t I grasp the logic here, and just…go to bed? Last night, I had to get up multiple times, too. Pablo was coughing, and I had to get him some medicine, Mallory had a bad dream, and Nikki needed a drink of water. When the alarm went off at 7, I went back to sleep until 7:30. D’oh! No morning workout for Laura.
Hey, if you happen to spot me on MySpace tonight after eleven, do me a favor and remind me about this post, okay? Thanks!
I was watching Taboo on the National Geographic Channel.
I forget what the topic was on this show. (They have different ones, like Taboo: Delicacies or Taboo: Sexuality, etc.) But at the end of the show, they showed the judge in Texas who makes the criminals wear signs professing their crimes in the area where the crime was committed.
Ted Poe is the name of the judge. (If you wanted to know.)
A man as Bobby Lynn Curtis, 27, admitted to putting his girlfriend's two-year-old daughter into a clothes dryer as punishment because she had "thrown a fit," police in Lumberton, Texas said Wednesday. Curtis faces up to 99 years in prison for the incident which he blamed on anger-management issues in a surprise news conference Wednesday morning at the Hardin County jail."I'm truly sorry what I've done," he told a reporter. Curtis, a construction worker, was bathing the child, whose name has not been released, Sunday evening while her mother was out shopping. The child objected to having her hair washed, which angered Curtis. "She just kept hollering. I kept getting madder and madder," he recalled.Bobby Lynn Curtis told police that he took the girl to the already running, hot dryer, put the child in it and turned it on. He left the child tumbling for about five seconds before getting her out. The child, who told her mother what had happened the following morning, suffered first- and

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama coach Nick Saban said cornerback Simeon Castille would be punished “internally” for his early morning arrest on a disorderly conduct charge, the fourth arrest in the same off-campus bar district this summer. Saban said Tuesday he had already settled on what the punishment would be but would not say if it includes a game suspension leading up to the opener Sept. 1 against Western Carolina. “This is not the kind of behavior that we want in the more…
Should someone go to jail for pirating software? Is translating a book and distributing it something sufficient to deprive you of your liberty? Does protecting someone’s potential livelihood outweigh the rights of freedom? Does the current justice model support punishments that fit the crime?
Background
After reviewing this topic from the perspective of the "victims", there seem to be many reasons in favor of locking up people who intentionally violate people’s copyright and get caught. Many large software and digital rights owners see every copyright violation as money being taken directly from their bottom line. They consider that if there were no copyright violations then they would have a much larger customer base who would purchase their products.
Using this logic, the more an individual is responsible for depriving them of income, the more they should be held accountable for those actions. Considering that some individual pieces
Now that Brenda Belton has been convicted of stealing $650,000 while she was head of the D.C. Board of Education Charter School Office I think jail for her would just be a continuation of wasting taxpayer money. No, I think she should be sentenced to spend the rest of her life as a student in District of Columbia public schools.

And yes, also in addition to checking off the “Can be team mom?” question on the soccer form this weekend.
Heather, am I on the road to over-achievement yet?

The FIA World Motor Sports Council decided not to penalize McLaren. The full FIA statement read: "An extraordinary meeting of the World Motor Sport Council was held in Paris on 26 July, 2007. The following decision was taken:“The WMSC is satisfied that Vodafone McLaren Mercedes was in possession of confidential Ferrari information and is therefore in breach of article 151c of the International Sporting Code. However, there is insufficient evidence that this information was used in such a way as to interfere improperly with the FIA Formula One World Championship. We therefore impose no penalty.“But if it is found in the future that the Ferrari information has been used to the detriment of the championship, we reserve the right to invite Vodafone McLaren Mercedes back in front of the WMSC where it will face the possibility of exclusion from not only the 2007 championship but also the 2008 championship.“The WMSC will also invite Mr Stepney and Mr Coughlan to show reason why they shou

THE college students, who stole a life-sized Homer Simpson figurine from a cineplex in One Utama last month, were issued a warning letter by the deputy public prosecutor. Petaling Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mazlan Mansor said the two students, aged 22, would not be charged as the DPP has decided not to take further action.“The DPP came to the decision as the figurine was safely returned.“The case is now solved,” Mazlan said when contacted by The Malay Mail yesterday. The Malay Mail had, on June 20, reported the theft of the life- sized model after it was found missing by the cineplex staff when they opened for business. The figurine was initially placed next to other models of the Simpsons on a display couch for photo opportunities to promote The Simpsons Movie. The cineplex management later lodged a police report.According to security video recordings from the shopping mall’s CCTV, the students first scouted the area after 3am.The students were then caught

Recent comments from a post about legalized licenses to kill brought up some questions. For me, comparing the death penalty to abortion is absurd. Yes, we are all created equal, but it is what a man does in his life that determines whether he is righteous or wicked.

George Bush announced that he was commuting the part of Libby’s sentence that would require a 30-month prison sentence, saying it was “excessive,” according to the New York Times. He said that “I respect the jury’s verdict, but I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr. Libby is excessive.”
Why did we bother having a jury in the first place then? The jury should have been the law, the President’s friends should not be above it. Ironically, this comes at a time when the White House is otherwise leaning on a twisted idea of separation of powers.
While Patrick Leahy acknowledged that Bush was acting legally, he had this to say about it: “Accountability has been in short supply in the Bush administration, and this commutation fits that pattern. It is emblematic of a White House that sees itself as being above the law.”
If Libby’s sentence was excessive, what about mandatory eight to 20 years for possessing eight ounces of

This bit of medieval wisdom comes courtesy of two Church of England bishops:
The Rt Rev Graham Dow, the Bishop of Carlisle, has shocked the liberal wing of the Church of England by suggesting that the floods that have caused chaos and death across the UK were caused by God after he was provoked by the introduction of gay equality.
"This is a strong and definite judgment because the world has been arrogant in going its own way," he said.
"We are reaping the consequences of our moral degradation, as well as the environmental damage that we have caused."
He and the Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Rev James Jones, have argued that those affected are innocent victims but that the floods send a message to the British people on a collective basis.
The Bishop of Liverpool said:
"People no longer see natural disasters as an act of God.
"However, we are now reaping what we have sown. If we live in a profligate way then there are going to be consequences.
"God is exposing us to the truth of what we h
There is an interesting article at Wash park Prophet about Colorado’s Homicide statutes and proposals for their reform.
I should note that I am not a big fan of the death penalty, nor do I like the idea of justifying prison on the ground that it is a deterrent, but I don’t have time to go into either of those right now.

I have written quite a few posts about Paris Hilton's jail sentence. I took a firm stance that Paris should serve the same sentence as anyone else..no matter their walk of life.Paris Hilton is a mirror of American culture. She is the living walking Barbie Doll. She is rich, famous, successful and embodies the product of the American Dream come true. Americans love their celebrities and Paris Hilton, if you take the most-searched terms on the Internet into account, is the MOST popular celebrity of all.Recently, they interviewed celebrities on the red carpet about Paris Hilton's jail sentence. Most didn't have very kind words for Paris. In an earlier post, I mentioned that Paris had a once in a lifetime opportunity to show America her true grit. From what I have seen she has chosen to do exactly that.I hadn't realized until Paris reported to jail that she would be facing SOLITARY CONFINEMENT. Twenty-three days of solitary is enough to drive a person insane. We are a social species. O
