The Prozac Goose Chase. Why Prozac Probably Works Differently Than We Thought
The Boston Globe reports on a theory that I'd heard about a while back that seems to be gaining traction, amassing evidence to support it, Head Fake: How Prozac Sent the Science of Depression in the Wrong Direction. The idea is that rather than depression being due to a shortage of some neurotransmitter or other, that it is actually due to neurons (brain cells) shrinking and dying in much the same

Prozac makes old brain cells young
Research may explain antidepressants' effectiveness By Ed EdelsonHealthDay Reporter THURSDAY, April 17 (HealthDay News) — The antidepressant Prozac has been shown to restore old brain cells to their more plastic youthful condition in animal experiments, researchers report. The work not only provides a possible new explanation for the antidepressant activity of the medication but also raises the distant prospect that it could be used to treat other conditions caused by malfunction of brain cells, said study lead author Jose Fernando Maya Vetencourt. Prozac
Today we had a Dr.'s appt. with our special needs pedetrican discusssing Demetrius' frequent fits...and now the squealing is becoming more prevalent and louder. It's related to his OCD issues...We've talked with Dr. Pakula about this in the past. The suggestion is to put him on about 10 milligrams of prozac to see if it makes these fits more controlable. The point is that the fits are a result of his not being in control of his situation (such as not being able to watch TV or play computer when he wants) or when things change on him too quickly. Further, while he is comfortable throwing fits here at the house, often in places where he is less comfortable he just starts to squeal loudly... like at the bus stop. (In fact, he's having a major meltdown right now because he has to do homework a

      Prozac (14 Years-Old)
This medicine is over marketed. Most of our country is at the bare minimum familiar with its brand name. It has been touted as a miracle in contrast to the older tricyclic-type antidepressents, gentle as a suckling kitten. Then there were law suits claiming Prozac causes suicidality and even temporary insanity. I don't care to research further...I did go insane. There are many factors to consider: My age at the time of ingestion, my undiagnosed bipolar disorder for instance. I coped quite well for more than a year, and perhaps the best way of describing what took place is that Prozac made me "switch phases", as antidepressents are known to do in bipolar patients. I hallucinated for the first time. I saw a shadow man in the depths of the night and an enormous roach-like creature around the t

Prozac for Bipolar Disorder, Bulimia, and Anxiety
Prozac is a medication often prescribed for bipolar disorder, bulimia, and anxiety disorders. The medication is highly effective because it acts as a serotonin inhibitor, which means that it helps balance serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin levels are responsible for mood stability, depressive states, and control of anxiety, fears, or phobias. Bipolar disorder, or manic depression, is a mental illness that is caused by a combination of biological, neurological, emotional, and situational factors. The true causes of bipolar disorder are not yet fully understood. However, it is understood that imbalances in the neurotransmitters of the brain, such as serotonin, are partially responsible for the predisposition of bipolar disorder in some patients.Bulimia is an eating disorder in which the patient eats excessively then purges themselves of the food they have eaten through either vomiting or induced bowel movements. Bulimia is caused by a combination of psychological and emotional fact

      Dogs Getting Off Prozac
Ever have that feeling that you’re going nowhere, not accomplishing anything? Apparently dogs have this problem too. Dogs with behavioral problems such as shyness, moodiness, and destruction of the home, histories of abuse, and pent-up energy can actually improve when the dog feels it has a “purpose”! According to West Magazine (a supplement of the Los Angeles Times), there is a place set aside for doggie daycare and “occupational therapy” called Drummond Ranch. It is located in Acton near the Angeles National Forest, and has a satellite location in Malibu. Each day before their commutes to work, the dogs are dropped off here by their owners (at considerable expense, partially owing to the fact that Acton is rather far for most Los Angelenos to drive and at $3 a gallon, this is a serious consideration). The cost of the services dogs enjoy at these locations adds another $175 per month to the tab. What goes on at these special facilities? Well the answer i

That's what the vet told us. We are now going on over a month of surgery and recovery of Sheeba. Yesterday was the first day in a very very long time that we let her outside to potty, we were afraid crazy dog would re injure herself. The doctor wants us immediately after Sheeba gets done with her pain killers to put her on Prozac......There is puppy Prozac, but he and his colleges believe that with her hyper activity level she needs people Prozac. After a few nights ago when a large thunder storm came through, we are definitely in agreement with the Doctors opinion. Banshee is terrified of large bangs, especially thunder, we tranquilize him during storms. We think that it has something to do with his breed and their association with wars. Banshee was trying to hide from the claps of thunder and Sheeba trying to relate I think?? would mimic everything Banshee did. It was mimicing for sure, because he would hide under the coffee table whimpering, then she in a delayed reaction would do e

      Prozac, anyone?
This just in: Sigh. At this point, what do we say? Once again, I missed the game, but just looking at the box score. .  .wait a minute. WHAT? Did Izturis really make THREE errors? THREE? As in more than two? How long until Lou realizes that SS is an offensive AND defensive black hole? Just put The Riot there and be done with it already. Also, I believe we were promised a Three Stooges-esque head-conking involving E6 and Ensalada. No time like the present. So here's your half-hearted game summary: Marquis gave up 4 runs (3 earned) in 5 innings of work. No one could hit anything until the bottom of the 9th, when we tried to make it interesting, which only served to get Pat and Ron all excited. They really seemed to think we could pull it out. Poor Ron. I'm not sure how much more of this he can take. So, to recap, we've now lost three in a row, Cesar sucks, and Jason Marquis is our number three starter. Oh, and we're now 3-5 and quiclyl approaching the NL Central cellar. Happy

Depression is one of the most common neuropsychiatric conditions, with a lifetime prevalence approaching 17%. Although a variety of pharmaceutical agents is available for the treatment of depression, psychiatrists find that many patients cannot tolerate the side effects, do not respond adequately, or finally lose their response. On the other hand, many herbs with psychotropic effects have far fewer side effects. They can provide an alternative treatment or be used to enhance the effect of conventional antidepressants. A number of recent preclinical and clinical studies indicate that stigma and pe
