Are You Ready For IPv6("Internet Protocol Version 6")?
I am! I have been on a IPv6 over IPv4 connection for almost 8 years at home and a pure IPv6 address' and connection at work, from the institution I work for due to research work I do. Things were not easy yet due to my indulgence I have mastered the beast somewhat, with the aid of countless others on Internet2!But one way or the other, it is going to come your way soon and you will have to deal with it. You will not see an IP address as you used to see for years. It is very different from what you are familiar now with IPv4 classes and subnets. So Some learning is needed and you can find more information from organizations like IPv6.ORG, or from some of the following sites listed here. The IPv6 Forum also has more regional information as well. But the reason for me to write this is that TMC

It is a huge document containing 24 Protocols or "Plans" for achieving World domination by these evil men. It was translated later by a man named Victor Marsden. What is VOIP(Voice Over Internet Protocol)?
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a protocol optimized for the transmission of voice through the Internet or other packet switched networks. VoIP is often used abstractly to refer to the actual transmission of voice (rather than the protocol implementing it). VoIP is also known as IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband. "VoIP" is pronounced voyp. Companies providing VoIP service are commonly referred to as providers, and protocols which are used to carry voice signals over the IP network are commonly referred to as Voice over IP or VoIP protocols. They may be viewed as commercial realizations of the experimental Network Voice Protocol (1973) invented for the ARPANET providers. Some cost savings are due to utilizing a single netw

Microsoft to share protocol with Samba team
For the first time ever, developers of the Samba project will be allowed to peruse Microsoft's protocols that they use for interconnectivity. Samba has become ubiquitous over the years as the de-facto starting point for non-Windows machines to communicate with Windows services, but has always faced two battles: Figuring out the protocols and keeping away from Microsoft's lawyers.Following an anti-trust ruling in the EU, Microsoft will be offering the protocols to Samba in exchange for a $10,000 chunk of change. A group called the Protocol Freedom Information Foundation will be handling this on behalf of the Samba team. The developers who have access to the protocols will not be able to dish them out to others, but will be able to develop new software that interacts with the protocols better. The biggest bonus here is developers can directly see what they are coding against and can make sure they aren't ?violating? any Microsoft software patents. At the very least, it might make for

      Oil depletion protocol
Professor Heinberg proposes a Protocol for Oil Depletion. The idea is simple: oil importing countries reduce their annual imports by the global depletion rate; and oil exporting countries reduce their annual exports by their national depletion rate. The Protocol would thus ensure a controlled reduction in global oil supply and consumption. This protocol would help stabilize oil prices as the global economy transitions to cleaner energy inputs. Is the SIP Protocol Too Open ?
We regularly talk about Security issues on VoIP systems and we have seen a report over on lightreading.com that is saying as SIP is such an open protocol it is also open to security problems. With a loosely defined standard like SIP, interoperability issues occur, So whatever security measures might apply to one SIP implementation won’t necessarily work for another. There appears to be an almost willing ignorance of SIP’s vulnerability issues on the part of VOIP network operators and users, say security vendors. Users of SIP applications either don’t understand or don’t care that their voice communications are prone to the same types of malicious viruses that affect email systems or other IP-based networks. We always need to be careful with these statements and think who is making them as security vendors would not say that VoIP vendors are protecting themselves as it means they do not sell much product - for sure the real picture lies somewhere in the middle

      Music Protocol On The Square
My office is right on the Square, which I normally consider the best place to have an office in this quiet small town. I’m within a block of food, office supplies, post office, a hair cut, free parking and of course the Square. The Square is nice not only for the view, but it’s essentially a park right outside the office door where I can go take long conference calls and walks when I get tired of sitting in my Aeron. It makes ScribeStorm feel like it’s on a campus. However recently the Square has begun to annoy me on occasion. Or rather, someone I am unaware of has begun to annoy me, without their knowledge or intent of course. About once a week, I arrive at the office to find music blaring from the gazebo on the Square. It’s as if someone in a ‘control center’ tucked away somewhere else in town accidentally tripped some switches with the result being obnoxiously loud, bad music being broadcast to innocent bystanders still trying to fend for cof

Rebooting a Windows XP computer using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)
We are frequently involved in projects with small and medium sized organisations. Due to the size of these organisations often the network infrastructure available is limited as a result of smaller budgets than their larger competitors. One side effect of this reduced budget is that our clients sometimes need hardware and software to function in ways it is not exactly designed for. One example of this is often not being able to afford the licence fee for Windows Server and instead to use Windows XP Professional or even Windows XP Home to run a central file, print or database server. Clearly this approach would not work for a Microsoft Active Directory Domain Controller but can be used for many other types of server and there are times where there is no other option. There are two usability downsides to be aware of for remote administration when taking the decision to use Microsoft Windows XP instead of Windows Server. The first is that Windows XP Professional when accessed through Remo

      Driving Protocol On The Square
I can’t figure out what the etiquette is when driving around the square. Here is my guess. There are clearly two lanes. Yet most people do not use them independently. It’s more like one large lane and you should only pass another car that is not moving. This is polite small town driving. There is however the lunch time exception*: during lunch time there are two lanes. One lane for those who have a limited time for lunch and one for the rest. The most critical aspect to this exception: DO NOT dilly dally in the “lane of limited time”. *Driving experience in LA and/or New York City helpful during the lunch time exception.

      IPv6 the Protocol
As everyone of you knows, TCP/IP is the communication protocol of the Internet. To be precise, TCP/IP is a suite of protocols. The TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) provides a reliable bidirectional connection between two hosts, using the communication facilities provided by the IP (Internet Protocol). In fact, IP is a network layer protocol and its task is to deliver packets of data from a source host to a destination host. IPv6 is the new version of the Internet Protocol, that is meant to replace IPv4 (which is the version currently in use) in a few years. IPv4 has been used since the Internet was born and has worked very well until now, but it has many serious limits that IPv6 has been designed to overcome. As you may guess, there have been many changes from the definition of the IPv4 protocol to the one of the IPv6 protocol. First of all, IPv6 provides a larger

Install SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) on Debian
In this tutorial I’m going to teach you how to install SNMP on Debian and configure it for local or remote use. Simple Network Management Protocol is a widely used protocol for monitoring the health and welfare of network equipment, computer equipment and even devices like UPS’s. Net-SNMP is a suite of applications used to implement SNMP v1, SNMP v2c and SNMP v3 using both IPv4 and IPv6. In my case I’m using snmp to monitor the status of my servers, both linux and windows. I use Cacti to graph all this information. (I will cover cacti installation on Debian in a future post). For the method described below I’m using apt for installing snmp, so before you start this you should configure apt and add some http or ftp sources into your /etc/apt/sources.list or if you have your installation dvd/cd you can use that. Let’s get started: We need to install snmpd package using the following command: apt-get install snmpd     That’s it snmpd is installed, now we

      Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
DHCP serverA host running a service to lease IP addresses to other hosts. The DHCP server is configured by an administrator with the pool, or scope, of addresses to be leased.DHCP is the automatic IP-address giver. In essence, an administrator configuresa DHCP server with a pool of addresses to lease out to hosts. The administratormay configure the server to lease out addresses to different networks by creatingseveral pools of addresses. Each pool of addresses contains the information that a TCP/IP host needs to build a TCP/IP stack. The pool is sometimes referred to as a scope, or range, of addresses.
