Could this official explain what he defines as behaviour beyond his description of vile? The Chinese government promised the Olympic bigwigs that they would clean up their act if they got the Games. The Chinese automatons running alongside the Olympic flame looked more cheesed off than worried. Demonstrators have been out in force in London trying to promote awareness of Chinese brutality in Tibet. My take on this is that the Chinese have no business in Tibet. It's not their country! Tibetans are not Chinese and the Chinese are not Tibetans. On top of that, there is a total lack of democratic accountability. People are being abused, culturally isolated, and generally being "controlled".I have heard it said that the Olympics should not be about politics, and that would be fair enough if we lived in a world where everyone was able to live without torture and terror. However, the Tibetans are not so free and easy. China may not like this but they are going to have to live with it. Some of

Three French protesters from the Paris-based media rights group Reporters Without Borders have been arrested during what has been described as an unnerving protest of the next Olympic games that are to be held in China."If the flame is sacred then so are humans," the French group stated. "we can't let the Chinese seize the Olympic flame, a symbol of peace, without denouncing the dramatic situation of human rights in the country."It was the first time the flame-lighting ritual was upstaged by protests, Olympic officials said. The stunt left Greek commentators speechless. According to the Associated Press state TV in China cut away to a prerecorded scene. Source: CNN

I’m neither accusing nor speculating, just relaying what has been reported by tvPAS in their latest video shown down below. It is true that a few UMNO and Barisan Nasional leaders had quitted and said sayonaras quite recently but so far their resignations have been peaceful. They didn’t make any noises just yet but who knows what will happen in the next few months. It is still too early to tell whether or not Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is really facing a major leadership crisis within UMNO and Barisan Nasional. We will just have to wait and see. :-)Courtesy of tvPAS Dot ComTags: malaysia kini, malaysiakini, malaysiatoday, malaysia election, 2008 election, barisan nasional 2008

Large New Protests in Lhasa: No-Win Choices for Beijing - SendMeRSS
Large New Protests in Lhasa: No-Win Choices for BeijingAlthough news is still sketchy it is clear that there have been fresh and much more serious demonstrations in the Tibetan capital Lhasa today. Activists, academics and residents said the protests, which had been peaceful until now, turned violent. Unconfirmed but credible reports spoke of police vehicles and a large market in flames. Electricity supply in the city has been cut off. There were also rumors that some form of marshal law or emergency law had been declared, though they too were impossible to confirm. What's clear is that the simmering resentment against Chinese rule that has now been building up for years has burst loose among ethnic Tibetans. Five months before the Olympics this really is a "perfect storm" for Beijing as i

When a Corporate Donation Raises Protests
By STUART ELLIOTTMarch 14, NY TimesWHEN the Columbus Children’s Hospital agreed to name a new lobby after two retail chains to thank their corporate parent for a $5 million donation, everyone was all smiles. The same was true when the Ohio hospital renamed itself Nationwide Children’s Hospital, to acknowledge a $50 million gift from Nationwide insurance, a large local company. But a coalition of children’s advocates contends that the hospital went too far by agreeing to name a new emergency department and trauma center after another locally based retailer, Abercrombie & Fitch, in exchange for a $10 million donation. The coalition, which includes the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, several pediatricians and Parents for Ethical Marketing, is asking the hospital to reconside

Links 11/10: Protests plague Pakistan, Prague, and Malaysia; Stampede in China; Romney loves Iraq; Merkel/Bush pledge diplomacy with Iran; the Internet loves Ron Paul
After her house arrest was lifted, Benazir Bhutto resumed her campaign against military rule in Pakistan. She has planned to lead a “long march” from Lahore to Islamabad (170 miles) beginning Tuesday. Seminal readers, what do you think about Bhutto’s activity? Is she more motivated by democratic goals or looking to capitalize upon political opportunity? Police broke up a protest in Malaysia, using water canons and tear gas to disperse protesters wanting electoral reform. In Prague, more than 1,000 marched in the Jewish Quarter an effort to stop a demonstration of the right-wing neo-Nazi Young Nationalist Democrats. Police were largely successful at keeping the two groups separate, but few squirmishes did occur. In China, three people died during a sale-enduced stampede at the French-run supermarket Carrefoure. Seven other individuals are in serious condition as a result of their injuries. If you think things are looking up in Iraq, then Mit Romney is your man.

8 Injured in Anti-Chavez Protests in Venezuela
Gunmen opened fire on students returning from a march Wednesday in which 80,000 people denounced President Hugo Chavez’s attempts to expand his power. The violence broke out after anti-Chavez demonstrators—led by university students—marched peacefully to the Supreme Court to protest constitutional changes that Venezuelans will consider in a December referendum. The amendments would abolish presidential term limits, give the president control over the Central Bank and let him create new provinces governed by handpicked officials. The protesters demand the referendum be suspended, saying the amendments would weaken civil liberties in one of South America’s oldest democracies and give Chavez unprecedented power to declare states of emergency. It’s very comforting to see that at least some people can see that Chavez will be the ruin of Venezuela. He fully intends to make Venezuela an even bigger disaster than Cuba. Unfortunately for the Cuban people we were unsuccess

M.A.N.G.I.N.A. Protests World of Warcraft In-Game Voice Chat
Representatives from the gamer organization Men Advocating the Normalization of Gaming In Non-traditional Avatars, or M.A.N.G.I.N.A. for short, are protesting the recent implementation of voice chat in World of Warcraft. The organization claims that the advent of ubiquitous voice chat in-game could ruin the lifestyle they’ve enjoyed in massive online games for the past few decades. “Easy access to voice chat utilities will eliminate all of the ambiguity and anonymity that our alternative gaming lifestyle enjoyed in the days when the chat box was the primary mode of communication in-game,” M.A.N.G.I.N.A. Chairperson Kris Smith told Daily Gaming News. “How will we be able to dupe people into thinking we’re really girls if we hop onto party chat sounding like Barry White?”

How the Pro-Democracy protests in Burma connect to Jamaica and Japan
I rarely blog about such serious topics but it looks like the political situation in Burma (Myanmar) is getting worse and worse. Yesterday morning I woke up to news that Burmese nationals in Jamaica were protesting in front of various embassies and offices in Kingston. Embassies such as the Mexican Embassy, Chinese Embassy and even the local United Nations Office. Now this morning I wake up to news that a Japanese journalist has been killed by Burmese soldiers and it was all caught on camera. As expected Japan is outraged, because video footage of the incident clearly shows the Japanese journalist named Kenji Nagai being shot at close range in the chest by a soldier. Still no action from the United States who has always claimed to do anything within it’s power to spread “democracy” across the world, in fact no major western power has done anything mainly because many of them support the military regime in Burma. All connections to the outside world via the internet has been cut o

Update: Protests In Burma Lead To Arrests And Shooting Into Crowds
After many warnings to end the demonstrations it has been reported that soldiers have fired directly into the crowds of protesters. The drama has been captured by news teams across the globe and shows hundreds of demonstrators fleeing baton-wielding soldiers underneath clouds of tear gas. It has been suggested that 70,000 protesters were on the streets of Burma’s biggest city, although there were less today due to over night arrests. Among the fatalities of the shootings was a foreign photographer, who was believed to be Japanese. There have been several other reports of people dead. The military had previously warned it would shoot demonstrators if they did not disperse and unfortunately they didn’t take the warnings seriously. The United Nations’ Security Council had urged Burma’s military government yesterday to exercise restraint towards peaceful protesters. Condoleeza Rice, US Secretary of State has called the situation in Burma a ‘tragedy’ and said “The regime

Thousands Join Burmese Monks In Protests
Prime Minister Gordon Brown sent a powerful message of support to Burmese monks and their supporters who are fighting against the oppressive rule of a military junta. Brown told them “human rights are universal and no injustice can last forever.” His words were received in Rangoon where over a 100,000 people joined the march of monks who seek through peaceful means a way to end their nation’s control by an oppressive military junta. It appears Myanmar’s largest economic source of trade, China, is urging the military to avoid using force. There are rumors the military is planning to dress thousands of troops as monks and have them infiltrate the march in order to provoke violence which would then allow the regime to send in troops to end the march and protests. Gordon Brown cited the world’s failure to halt the slaughter of innocent people in Rwanda and Zimbabwe makes in necessary for nations today to take action. The success or failure of this protest is s
