Follow up on the "Sean Bell" Protest
As expected the protests began at around 3:00 pm hoping to send a message to stop the brutality that the NYPD is implicating around our neighborhoods. Al Sharpton, Nicole Paultre, and Jose Guzman were among the many to be arrested. In a way I'm proud that a lot of our people came out to support this INJUSTICE, but not enough is being done. People hit the streets, blocked intersections in a peaceful manner, but it hurts so bad to see them get arrested for voicing their opinions. It's unfair and the NYPD knows it. They don't have a right to treat our people like that. They call it "Civil Disobedience", I call it standing for what you believe in. Like Charles Barron said, "If Michael Vick could go to jail for dogs, and Wesley Snipes could go to jail for tax dollars, then people should go to j

Actually, I had trekked to the University of Michigan to hear the Dalai Lama opine on our imploding planet. Pope Benedict XVI was doing much of the same on Sunday as he made a pilgrimage of sorts to Ground Zero in New York. But there was no time to meditate on spiritual serendipity as a scowling Chinese grad student almost knocked me over with his floppy, sloppily scrawled sign: "Dalai Lama - 50 years of CIA funding isn't enough for you." He was one of about 500 "dissidents" waiving Chinese flags outside the arena. Now I have to admit, I'm always a bit shocked to see demonstrations by non-lefties. It seems another consultation on our freedom to assemble and protest is on its way. The House of Commons Joint Committee on Human Rights has just launched a 'Call for Evidence' in order 'to enquire into the human rights issues arising from policing and protest'. These are some of the questions asked:• What limits, if any, should be placed on the right to protest and why?• Should specific limitations be placed on the ability of certain groups to protest? If so, who and why?• Should the right to protest be more strictly curtailed in relation to certain geographical areas? If yes, where, why and what limits would be acceptable?• The Government proposes to repeal sections 132-8 SOCPA dealing with protest around Parliament and invites Parliament to consider whether additional

      Was That a Protest?
I'm beginning to think I really do live among the apathetic community in China. May 1 was supposed to be the big protest/boycott of Carrefour and all things French. I think there may have been some talk about boycotts against American, German, and Japanese stuff as well, but I don't have confirmation yet.Anyway, we went to Carrefour today to see the protest. There wasn't any. Worst protest ever.We saw a few people going in the opposite direction with their shopping bags. We saw plenty of shoppers stocking up on deals around the store. Granted, being a holiday today, it should've looked like a mall at Christmas. Instead, there were maybe a hundred people. Guess I have nothing to worry about when it comes to safety around here... just have to watch out for the cars on the sidewalk.

A Protest Vote is Bad for America
People claim that a John McCain win in November will be damaging for the Conservative movement. He is not a strict Conservative, and he appealed to Independents and Democrats, not typical Republicans, in order to secure the Republican nomination. That very well may be true; although, I am not sure I believe it. It is more [...]

      Protest against Social Security Reform
The ruling part AKP wants to raise the retirement age to 65 while the life expectancy in Turkey is about 67 years. It means that most of the workers will die before being retired. The reform proposed by the government has been harshly criticised by labor leaders and opposition parties. Turkish unions launched a protest meeting in Istanbul against the sought social security and general health insurance bill. Here are the photos that I have taken."Real Turkiye"

Terry Keel Doth Protest Too Much?
I read with great interest an article in the Austin American-Statesman concerning Terry Keel’s denial that he was campaigning for Mindy Montford for Travis County DA. Check out a couple of paragraphs from that piece: Republican Terry Keel said he wanted nothing to do with the Democratic primary runoff for Travis County district attorney until a local political Internet site anonymously reported that he was campaigning for candidate Mindy Montford, a contention he swears is false. The fiery Texas House parliamentarian, a former prosecutor, sheriff and legislator, was irked by the link to a Democratic race. He began investigating the source of the report on AustinPoliticalReport.com, which on Tuesday was disseminated in an e-mail by the campaign for Rosemary Lehmberg, Montford’

April 1, Channel News AsiaJAKARTA: Indonesia's president has urged the mainly Muslim nation not to resort to violence in protests against an anti-Islamic film, and barred the Dutch filmmaker behind it from entering the country.President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono also said the screening of "Fitna", which has sparked several protests here since its release on the Internet last Thursday, would be banned in the former Dutch colony."I am asking (Indonesians) not to engage in actions such as destruction, violence and sweepings (harassing foreigners), because Islam and the other religions forbid violence and it is also against the law," Yudhoyono told journalists late Monday. The 17-minute film features imagery of the attacks on New York in 2001 and Madrid in 2004 combined with quotes from the Kora

      Ukrainians Protest Against Joining NATO
Thousands of people in Ukraine’s southern republic of Crimea are protesting against the country's plans to join NATO. The demonstrators are also demanding that Ukraine's peacekeepers are withdrawn from Kosovo. The protesters say that joining the alliance will be against the people's wishes and national interest, and could also harm Ukraine's relations with Russia. The rally comes two days before the visit of George Bush to the Ukrainian capital, Kiev. The country's plans to join NATO will be discussed at an alliance summit in Bucharest in early April.

Kansas bookstore burns books (to protest 'society's diminishing support for the printed word')
I had mixed feelings when I learned of a publicity stunt perpetrated by another indie bookstore in Kansas City this weekend. According to CNN, Tom Wayne, the owner of Prospero's Books in Kansas City, organized a bookburning of some of the books that Wayne claims that Prospero can't sell, "in protest of what he sees as society's diminishing support for the printed word." I have much respect for Prospero's Books, which is the premier used bookstore in Kansas City, known for its support of local authors. I'm reluctant to criticize another independent bookstore in a metropolitan area that is seriously deficient in indie bookstores. Wayne and his partner may be making a valid point about the decline on book reading in the United States, but the national publicity from this stunt not o

Orphan Film Symposium: The 1961 Folk Singer Protest in Washington Square Park, and Emile de Antonio's America
At the beginning of each Orphan Film Symposium, I like to scan the schedule and make note of the films I can't miss. The registered participants see all the films together as well as talk over organized lunches and dinners. The screenings start in the morning and continue through the evening, so the collective experience is intense. Though I take care of minor behind-the-scenes tasks, I like to attend most of the screenings.I put today's early afternoon session at the top of my list – films that documented protests held in Washington Square Park in the 1960s, and a couple of presentations on maverick documentary filmmaker Emile de Antonio.Dan Drasin was a burgeoning 18-year-old filmmaker when he took his cameras and some black and white film to document a protest by folk singers in Washi
