In any case COPA has a short write up on the rather complex issue of Canadian pilots' licence and the ICAO language proficiency certification requirements. There seems to be lots of promises not to violate each other's pilots wafting across the Canada-US border, but I wouldn't want a trip to depend on everyone having gotten the message.

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (日本語能力試験, nihongo nōryoku shike), or JLPT, measures a person’s proficiency in the Japanese language. Test results are widlely used by professionals seeking employment at Japanese companies and students seeking acceptance at Japanese educational institutions to certify their language proficiency.
The JLPT is held once a year in December in various cities inside and outside of Japan. The test has four levels, the lowest being level 4 for beginners and the highest being level 1 for advanced students. Writing, vocabulary, listening, reading and grammar skills are tested.
The JLPT was first held in 1984 in response to growing demand for standardized Japanese language certification. Up until 2003, the JLPT was one of the requirements for foreigners entering Japanese University. Since 2003, the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) is used by most universities for this purpose.

I did 3 1/2 Pilot Proficiency Checkrides yesterday. Let me tell you all about it.Last week, two company pilots and I went down to a FlightSafety training center in the United States to undergo recurrent training, leading up to a checkride which renews our certification on the jets we fly. I talked a bit about the actual recurrent training in my last post - it consists of groundschool and lots of training in a full-motion simulator, which is a fairly accurate computer-driven model of our cockpit, complete with fancy graphics projected through the cockpit windows to give the illusion that we are actually flying our jet, but without any risk of dying if we screw things up.I have taken the Company Check Pilot course, which will eventually see me certified to conduct checkrides on our company pilots, but I still have some additional training to do before that all goes through, so I had to arrange for a Transport Canada inspector to conduct our recurrent checkrides.In our company, we are a
