Book Description
ISBN-0070267685
It’s one of the hot topics for the 1990s–how to apply quality improvement techniques originally developed for the manufacturing sector to service industries.

Since then, I have seen a few posts on various blogs about implementing a point system in order to keep yourself productive while blogging. Recently, I have implemented [...]

Productivity blogger Andre Kibbe knows that he gets distracted early and often by hang-ups, inconveniences, and a school of distractions just waiting to take him away from his tasks. He recommends a form of bad day auditing—looking at every step that happened before you got off-track, and fixing it for tomorrow. Waiting for his laptop [...]

One of the more difficult things for me to deal with over the last few weeks of waiting for a diagnosis and finally beginning treatment for my daughter has been just how differently my husband and I deal with stress. I have been contemplating this post for awhile, and I'm still not sure quite how to approach this issue. I don't want to sound like I'm ragging on my husband. I'm not. But I also know that differences in how spouses deal with grief, stress and other Big Events can create a huge amount of stress in a relationship. And it is all too common. Some of it is the male/female thing. Some of it is personality. And some of it I think is related to the fact that my husband already suffers from depression. But one thing has been made clear in all of this with my daughter's illness:
I’m going on a limb here (again) and releasing the Weekly Productivity Planner (1) in its draft form.
Part of the reason I’ve been delaying the release of this aid is because the weekly planner is so important. Planning by weeks is just so much more effective because it allows you to capture both the [...]

The medium of communications is many nowadays: IM, Email, RSS, phone, and the lack of medium: a face-to-face meeting.I use Gtalk a lot and I'm a big fan of Twitter. The Twitter service is essentially public instant messaging. For me, instant messaging( IM) is very time-consuming and leads to more disturbing and low productivity. And, IM, even the public kind, still has its limitations as a communication medium. In fact, many people abuse instant messaging, and the info noise is very disturbing. We have compared e-mail and RSS, both of which have some limitations. Email sometimes can let one very easily misunderstand what was going on. For people that are trying to do strategic or complex things through email and it's the wrong pipe to be using. In this kind of situation, phone and even a fa

It was days of working late that I kept nodding in front of the computer. Lack of sleep had deprived me to walk like a zombie at times. Fortunately, I still managed to survive in front of the little kids.I dread bearing responsibility but it is responsibility that makes me strive harder to fulfil my tasks. When I have plentiful of time to allocate my own timing, I seem to stare into the air most of the time. I realise occasionally I do keep browsing through all the reports and statuses to keep myself away from uneasiness. When personal work load stacks up, I begin losing control of everything.Having lots of important and urgent tasks on hands do burn me out a lot and deepen my sleep debt, however, do increase my productivity.I need to learn to prioritise and focus on my tasks.Talking about f
Prioritize GE-Style by Writing the Purpose of Calendar Items [Productivity] Feel like you're spending far too much time on less-than-important meetings, phone calls, and other daily drudgery? Take a tip or two from the prioritizing managers at General Electric. An editor at Harvard Business Review sat in on one of their training sessions and walked away with a few practical tips. One simple idea in particular can help overcome burdens you didn't even know you were shouldering.Compare your calendar with the priorities. Label the purpose of every regular or recurring activity on your quarterly calendar and highlight those activities that are connected with your top five priorities. This simple exercise will reveal where you're squandering your time.If I ran through an entire quarter lab
"The first message one could consider email was sent more than 30 years ago, and that's probably when people began associating angst and uncertainty with the words "Inbox" and "unread messages." The tools available to read and send emails have advanced considerably since then, but what you actually do with all that chatter, without eating up entire days of work time, is up to you."[via lifehacker]

But what about .org and .net addresses? . In Firefox, Shift+Enter takes you to .net and Ctrl+Shift+Enter takes you to .org addresses automatically . So if you wanna go to Problogger , just type the word in firefox address bar and press Shift+Enter .2: Alt + DYou can use this to navigate directly to the browser address bar of firefox. Do you share your files with others in your firm? Do you find that you are being bombarded with updates to the same files time and time again? Imagine that your boss comes to you and asks you to merge several files into one main file (Microsoft Word document). You spend quite a bit of time copying and pasting everything together. Then you think to yourself, "How can I make this more efficient?" One of the most productive ways to update information on files is to either create or move a file into a shared folder on your company's network drive. Instead of each person creating their own files and you having to merge them together, it would be much faster for everyone to add their own information to one main file. This cuts down on you havi

"It's what you learn after you know it all that counts." -Harry S. Truman, Thirty-third President of the United States, Harry S. Truman books//Learning new things is exciting, but it may not be the best way to increase your productivity. Why? Because it takes a lot of effort to learn something new. Your brain has to create all new files, folders and storage locations, and you have to train yourself how to recall the new information when needed. It expands your toolbox, which may be necessary and useful; however, if you haven't mastered how to use the tools already in the box, then does it really help you to throw in some more? This 'jack-of-all-trades' approach to personal or professional development happens all of the time. You go to training seminars, development workshops and get an

With the revelation that it's not really true that watching basketball during March Madness decreases my productivity, I've been thinking about my work productivity and how it could be better.Clearly, the answer to that is "take away my internet access." Forget about managing basketball brackets; it's the reading websites and email that suck away all my time. But you know what I really learned today? I'm currently at the pinnacle of my productivity: It's scientifically proven that I'll be way less productive if I ever have kids. That is a scary, scary thought.Still, what scares me more is how this is surprising enough to merit a study.

About a year ago, I bought a convertible tablet PC as part of my plan to be able to work anywhere, which was part of my plan to become more efficient, which was part of my plan to get more work-life balance. Well, you know what they say about the best-laid plans. But I’ve nevertheless become quite fond of my laptop. A tablet PC is kind of a laptop computer that lays flat. You use a special pen on it, both to act like a mouse and to write. It tries to recognize your handwriting—or for more precision, you can tap out letters on an on-screen keyboard. A convertible tablet is a laptop computer on which the screen can rotate around and lay flat, on top of the keyboard, for use as a tablet. Or it can be used with the screen in the usual place, using the keyboard. I bought a Toshiba Porteg
In my post of March 12th entitled, "The Truth, Denial, Revulsion, and the Reinforcing of Stereotypes," I wrote: "Many LGBT people honestly believe that by appropriating degrading names given to them by their oppressors they are re-claiming their essence, and their very liberation, from the hurt that those names that have historically been visited upon them have caused them. They don't see, and many refuse to see, that their use of those horrible names merely reinforces in their psyches and in the psyches of others their 'deviant' and 'abnormal' status that is diametrically opposed to the status one must have, and demand, for full and equal rights to become a reality."Had I written about the use of pejorative self-identifiers and assorted Pride Parades shortly after Stonewall, I would not h

Amongst the several other fires I had to put out today, I’m sorry this blog was down for most of the morning. T’wasnt my fault, t’was the fault of the webhost. Which made me think of this post. A new study has found that bigger monitors make people more productive. Researchers looked at how quickly people performed tasks, such as editing a document and copying numbers between spreadsheets, on a variety of different computer monitors.
People who used a 24-inch screen completed the tasks 52 percent faster than people who used an 18-inch monitor, and people who used a computer attached to two 20-inch monitors were 44 percent faster than those with an 18-inch screen. However, productivity dropped off again when people used a 26-inch screen.
Using a larger monitor could save as much as 2.5 hours a day.
