And since all perception of massage is mediated via the nervous system, it follows that a traumatised person's experience of a massage may differ from that of a non-traumatised person. The statement 'massage is relaxing' may not apply. Let's be a bit more specific h

In the current issue of Foreign Affairs, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has offered parting statement under the title “Rethinking the National Interest: American Realism for a New World.” The section on the Middle East includes an elusive passage that seems to acquiesce in the political inclusion of violent groups. As I argue at the Middle East Strategy at Harvard (MESH) blog, it

POLL: Bush more problematic for McCain than Wright is for Obama
It’s pretty amazing when a sitting President and your ties to his failed policies are the number one liability to your run for the Oval Office. Despite any real attempt to define McCain as Bush44, the public already sees the connection loud and clear. I’ve seen conservative after conservative go on TV today to talk about how mavericky John McCain really is. Nonsense. On the two most important issues this country faces — Iraq and the economy — John McCain is on the same exact page as George W. Bush. MSNBC: Sen. Barack Obama’s ties to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright could hurt his presidential hopes. So could his comment about “bitter” small-town America clinging to guns and religion. And Americans might question Sen. Hillary Clinton’s honesty and tru

      Tonight's dinner was problematic.
I simply did not feel like cooking dinner tonight. Okay so I never feel like cooking on Sunday nights. I don't know why. But Sunday nights are often breakfast for dinner nights where I make pancakes or eggs and toast or canned soup or something relatively easy. Still, rarely do I feed my children flat out junk food but the other night my husband and I went out to dinner for our anniversary and so the children stayed home and ate dinner with a babysitter. Junk food was in order that night. Corn dogs and tater tots to be exact.Tonight all of us have a bit of a cold and I just did not feel like cooking anything that required the use of even 1/8 of an ounce of brain matter in order to cook it. So I made a repeat of Friday night's kid meal because we had more of the same in the freezer. My husband and I joked about how very yellow this meal was looking. It was shaping up to be the blandest looking meal we might ever consume.Corn dogs: YELLOWTater tots: Variation of YELLOWCorn: obv

      Frequent weighing problematic for teens
There are some common traits among adults who have lost weight and kept it off permanently. One of those is frequent weighing.Where this may be helpful for adults, the practice may have the opposite effect in teenage girls.A study conducted by Univ. of Minnesota researchers and recently published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that teen girls who weigh themselves often are likely to binge eat and develop other unhealthy eating behaviors. For the 2,500 teens who were followed for 5 years, those that weighed themselves frequently tended to gain weight over time. The take-home advice from this study is that focusing on weight and the number on the scale for teens should be discouraged. It may end up making the weight problem larger!

      Problematic Hair Update (44/365)
About a month ago, we got the little notice from the school that it was school picture time for Peanut. I wasn't sure how he would do, but I did ask our babysitter (a former hairstylist) to give him a haircut the week before. Having her cut his hair at home has been the only way we have been able to get him calm enough to avoid bloodshed, so when she forgot her scissors, I really wasn't up for traumatizing some other poor unsuspecting salon cutter. Frankly, I figured he'd refuse to sit still for his picture anyway. It turns out that he did great! He totally cooperated, and his teacher assured me that they got a really cute shot of him, which came home in his backpack today:It actually captures him perfectly. The big brown eyes, the engaging smile, the psychotic hair.I call this one "A Flock of Seagulls:"Here's the best one. It made me laugh and laugh when I saw it. This is a self-portrait he did at school. Like the hair? I fully expect this child to show up here, in the 2020 awards
