It's not a defeat, but it's also not the victory FAMU administrators hoped for. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, at its annual meeting in New Orleans today, decided to extend FAMU's six-month probation for another six months. The accrediting body's 77-member Commission on Colleges placed FAMU on probation in June, two weeks before Ammons became president, ruling that FAMU was in violation of 10 accrediting standards. They included those that demand financial stability, "qualified” administrators and academic leaders, control over research spending and financial aid disbursement, and the tracking of inventory. The probation came on the heels of a scathing state operational audit that found 35 problems involving millions of dollars in questionable expenses, shoddy bookkeeping and lost inventory. When called on it by Bob they gave him their customary sarcastic answer of how they don't have to impress anybody. Then they tried telling the probation officer how they can't get jobs to pay their fines because Bob and I won't GET THEM a job. Talk about delusions of grandeur and typical RAD entitlement issues. They honestly think it's our job to ensure they get a job somewhere. So two boys were hit with more fines today including having to pay probation for their court ordered supervision. Talk about anger issues tonight. Rick Tocchet Free to serve two years probation
NHL player Rick Tocchet has been ordered to serve two years probation for his role in an illegal sports gambling ring. The 43-year-old could have received up to five years in a U.S. state prison. However, there is a presumption against incarceration for first-time offenders who plead guilty to third- or fourth-degree crimes. That means the retired Philadelphia Flyer is unlikely to serve any time for his crimes, said Mark Eliades, the deputy attorney general who prosecuted the case.......No jail time for TocchetOn February 6, 2006, Tocchet was served with a criminal complaint, accused of financing a nationwide sports gambling ring based in New Jersey in which several current NHL players wagered. He was expected to travel from his Arizona home to answer charges of promoting gambling, money laundering and conspiracy in New Jersey. "It's not a hockey-related issue, it's a football thing. And at this time I can't comment any further," Tocchet told The Arizona Republic after the Coyotes pr

      FAMU put on probation
Florida A & M University has been placed on probation for six months by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the regional accrediting body that oversees the public institution. The commission on colleges, during its bi-annual meeting in Ponte Vedra Thursday, concluded that FAMU is in violation of 10 accrediting standards dealing with financial controls, leadership, inventory tracking, and controls over areas like sponsored research and financial aid. The probation is the worst of two actions the commission can take against a university, and if a college does not clean up its act within the probationary period, it can lose its accreditation altogether, said Tom Benberg, vice president and chief of staff for the SACS commission on colleges. A university that loses accreditation is no longer eligible for federal financial aid for its students. The probation comes just weeks before new FAMU president James Ammons takes over at his long-troubled alma mater. - Shannon Cola

He told his bosses that he had been attending law school at night.A judge will decide on July 13 whether Valery deserves the chance to enter accelerated rehabilitation, a program reserved for first-time offenders who commit crimes that are not of a serious nature.Participants stay on probation for two years and have their record wiped clean if they fulfill conditions imposed by a judge.

      Boyfriend on probation
On Sunday I hated him. On Monday I dumped him. On Tuesday we went to the zoo. Some things in life aren’t worth fighting over, and some are. It’s been too hard, I’ve been too restless, and being with him was simply that little bit too much work when not being with him was none at all. When I knocked on the door he was waiting for me, jacket on, ready to go. I saw the flatmates over his shoulder, one called out, “Hey, where you going?”He replied back as he was leaving, “I don’t know. For a walk.”My outfit had taken me hours to assemble. It was a surrogate worry; worry about something pointless like whether you should wear jeans or a skirt, heels or flats, and you won’t have to worry about what you’re actually going to say. Eventually it ended up jeans and boots, a white shirt over a black tank top. When I got there I regretted it instantly- I was too hot and I’d told him we were going for a walk, the heels were inappropriate.Uncomfortably we walked around th

In Texas, a white teenager burns down her family's home and receives probation.
A recent story in the Chicago Tribune has resonated - big time - with the public. The story was written by Howard Witt who is the Tribune's Southwest Bureau Chief, based in Houston.Witt reported:To some in Paris, sinister past is backIn Texas, a white teenager burns down her family's home and receives probation. A black one shoves a hall monitor and gets 7 years in prison. The state NAACP calls it `a signal to black folks.' The public fairgrounds in this small east Texas town look ordinary enough, like so many other well-worn county fair sites across the nation. Unless you know the history of the place. There are no plaques or markers to denote it, but several of the most notorious public lynchings of black Americans in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries were staged at the Paris Fairgrounds, where thousands of white spectators would gather to watch and cheer as black men were dragged onto a scaffold, scalded with hot irons and finally burned to death or hanged... There was the 19
