The story of Beckett’s first antihero, Belacqua Shuah, whom the publisher (Calder Books) calls an alter-ego for the author, is actually narrated by a Mr. Beckett. His biographer, James Knowlson notes: [M]any of the figures who appear in the novel are closely based on people whom he knew – in some cases much too closely for this not to have been a source of embarrassment to the older Beckett, who, after several initial attempts to get it published, became extremely reluctant to see it appear during his own and their lifetimes. You probably think this blog is about you (part two)
Part OneWriting is a very personal thing. I write to work things out. I write a sentence, maybe a paragraph, and I look at it and say to myself: "Does that make any sense? Am I saying what I mean here?" I've just done that here. I know each and every word very well. I use them regularly and I have full confidence in every single one of them to deliver my precise meaning every time I use them. And that's fine when it comes to simple sentences. Once we get onto broader topics, once we start incorporating figures of speech, everything starts to get that bit fuzzier. Writing is an act of vanity because it presumes that other people will want to read what's just been written. On the whole I'm not a vain person. I like my clothes to match when I go outside but really that has nothing to do with

In the opening paragraph from the preface to what became the first volume of his 'autobiography', Unreliable Memoirs, Clive James has this to say:Most first novels are disguised autobiographies. This autobiography is a disguised novel. On the periphery, names and attributes of real people have been changed and shuffled so as to render identification impossible. Nearer the centre, important characters have been run through the scrambler or else left out completely. So really the whole affair is a figment got up to sound like truth. All you can be sure of is one thing: careful as I have been to spare other people's feelings, I have been even more careful not to spare my own. Up, that is, of course, to a point. Clueless about Malware (And probably life too)
Here is an excerpt from a post made to a group that helps/deals with Malware reports on web sites. I can no longer visit this site through google. "Warning - visiting this web site may harm your computer!" This is just a lie and I think we all know why this site is being persecuted. Keep your personal opinions and the opinions of your investors out of it. The deeper I dig in to the StopBadware.org manifesto the more obtuse your definitions become. A couple clicks and suddenly "Site may harm your computer" turns in to "contains or links to badware or otherwise violates Google's software guidelines." I hope someone sues you silly. It just goes to show the general level of ignorance out there from people that: Don't understand the size of the probl

The Best $50 I've Probably Ever Spent
Or maybe not...It could just be the greatest $50 I've spent in the past 5 years, but still, that's a bold statement! So yesterday our power was out (for 22 1/2 hrs!!!) due to some major storms in our area. We toughed it out because it was a beautiful day, and we were able to stay here and not completely fry.* There was one problem though. How was I going to pump? I've been doing this in the mornings, so we can give Lennon bottles before bed and at night, so we all can sleep more. I totally panicked and started calling around places to see if I could buy a battery pack. No dice. So, I bit the bullet, went to Target, and bought a hand pump, with the idea that I could return it if it was really horrible. Well, it is FAR from horrible. In fact, I'm irritated with myself that I never ga

Marion Jones’s teammates stripped of their Medals: She’s probably safer in jail now
Yesterday the executive board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) ruled that the US track team from 2000 would be stripped of their medals because of Marion Jones’s admission that she used steroids. The team won the gold in the 4×400 meters and bronze in the 4×100 and were not only stripped of their medals but [...]

I should probably explain Sunshine Rewards
I keep mentioning how Sunshine Rewards has pretty much paid for our trip to Disney. But what I haven’t explained is what exactly is Sunshine Rewards and how does it help pay for my or your vacation. So lets begin Sunshine Rewards is a loyalty program where you get paid to [...]

Keep an eye out for this guy's water-powered car -- Denny Klein will probably be killed off by GM and this video will be removed from YouTube...
What if YOU could buy a car that ran 100 miles on a few cups of water? What if a guy came up with a way to make modifications to his own car to drive to work -- WITHOUT having the millions of dollars of R&D money the American auto manufacturers have at their disposal... do you think Detroit might be a little bit ticked if he made the news? Do you think it's a little bit suspicious that you haven't seen this technology mentioned yet on CNN, USAToday, the New York Times, Al Gore's 'global whoring' circuit, or on the campaign trail? If I were Denny Klein, I would fear for my life. And as an angry consumer and citizen, I'm truly concerned that this video will be pulled off the 'net before everyone has a chance to see it.Don't worry, we've archived it to show future generations how close we g

'We are probably all hard-wired to respond and care for babies'
From: Some Scientists Argue We Are Built to Coo At the Sight of a Baby   Using a technique called magneto-encephalography that measures brain signals, the Oxford researchers found that a baby's face can seize our attention in milliseconds, activating an unusual mental organ called the fusiform gyrus that responds to human faces. Moreover, these distinctive infant features, unlike the mature features of an adult, trigger a sense of reward and good feeling in a seventh of a second. Picture Bambi's saucer-size eyes or those of Mickey Mouse.   The researchers concluded that the parental instinct is present in all of us. "It suggests we are probably all hard-wired to respond and care for babies, to help us perpetuate the species," said Oxford child psychiatrist Alan Stein,

Is This the 2G iPhone? Probably Not
It seems a rogue image claiming to be the back of the iPhone 2 has wafted across the pages of iPod Observer. It sports a plastic, piano black finish, which is quite a departure from Apple’s brushed chrome look of the iPhone or mirrored chrome of other iPods. On the other hand, plastic [...]

This is probably how Britney felt the day she shaved her head.
Wednesday morning it became evident that it was going to be one of THOSE days. You know, one of those days when my inherited tendency to act like a MENTALLY DERANGED LUNATIC is blatantly obvious to anyone within a 32.7 mile radius. So, this is kind of like an update to let you all know that getting off [...]

      Cameron Diaz is probably annoying.
Here is what she said. US Magazine says, “I like boys — a lot. I’m boy crazy. That hasn’t changed since I was very young.” But even Diaz knows she’s not the easiest partner to date. “I’m a lot of woman — in a lot of ways,” she says. “And I understand that can be intimidating.” Here is [...]
