Carla Del Ponte, the ex-chief prosecutor for war crimes in former Yugoslavia, has unleashed a storm of recrimination with allegations of a trade in human body parts in Kosovo and Albania after Nato bombed Serbia in 1999. Del Ponte claims, based on what she describes as credible reports and witnesses, that Kosovan Albanian guerrillas transported hundreds of Serbian prisoners into northern Albania where they were killed, and their organs "harvested" and trafficked out of Tirana airport. The Kosovan government, now headed by the former guerrilla leader Hashim Thaci, dismisses the claims as untrue, while Serbia and Russia are demanding a war crimes investigation into the allegations. More defendants are expected to do the same as the military attempts to prosecute dozens of prisoners at the isolated, high-security U.S. base overlooking the Caribbean. Good News for Prisoners Wanting a “Second Chance”
Tomorrow in the Rose Garden, President Bush is expected to sign the Second Chance Act, which will provide $165 million in annual funding to help release and re-integrate prisoners into society: Today, as a legacy of [80s and 90s “get tough”] policies, not only are record numbers incarcerated, but also about 700,000 state and federal prisoners are released annually, many of them with little education or employment prospects and destined to be imprisoned again within a few years. In a sharp change in attitudes about incarceration, many states and private groups have recently experimented with “re-entry” programs to help released prisoners fit back into their communities and avoid new crime. Prisoners Call Me
When I get home from work one of my routines is to check the answering machine to see if anyone had called.  Indeed someone had called me.  I listened to the message and it was a recording from the County Correctional Facility asking if I would accept a collect call from a prisoner.  I don’t know anyone in jail so I could not figure out who would have tried to call me.  Then I thought maybe my friend The Big Fez had been picked up by the cops and was using his one call to talk to me.  As far as I know he has never been in trouble with the law but there is always a first time for everything.  I called his house and he answered.  I told him I was checking to make sure he was not in jail.  He wasn’t.  He said sometimes people in jail will call random people to see if they will answer.  Maybe that was what happened or maybe they dialed the wrong numebr in any case to the guy in the County Correctional Facility, sorry I missed your call.

Many individuals are vehemently against this road, and following is a summary of reasons I have heard at various neighborhood association and public city meetings:1 - The streets are already very narrow and the open pathway would increase traffic and residents don't want any more cars coming through their quiet street.2 - It would be so expensive and as city tax payers, many individuals feel they have the right to say no on the grounds that it would just seemingly be irresponsible use of tax dollars, and that there are better things to spend money on.3 - The individuals that tend to speed and race down Allied are thought to potentially speed down the newly open street as well, and who would want that?4 - And lastly, perh

Making their stay in prison better is the first worry of the AACRPE 5 Association of Friends of Reform Centers and Childhood Protection), help make them reintegrate smoothly into the society is its second worry. These kids need – among others- psychological support, education to not lose completely the time they spend in prison, and -above all- a society that cares for them once they get their freedom. What’s this freedom worth if they find – once out of prison – hostility in the air? What will be the difference between prison and a society that does not want them in? But what was he doing commanding Taliban troops in the first place? Mehsud had been captured by American forces in northern Afghanistan in December 2001 and sent to the Guantanamo Detention Center. The reason he was able to resume his duties as a Taliban commander is because we released him from Guantanamo in March 2004.Why on earth did we free Mehsud in the first place, permitting him to go back to his day job as a guerilla and terrorist leader? Are prisoners being tortured in Iraq? Yep.
from The Smoking Gun  Torture, Al-Qaeda Style Drawings, tools seized from Iraq safe house in U.S. military raid MAY 24–In a recent raid on an al-Qaeda safe house in Iraq, U.S. military officials recovered an assortment of crude drawings depicting torture methods like “blowtorch to the skin” and “eye removal.” Along with the images, which you’ll find on the following pages, soldiers seized various torture implements, like meat cleavers, whips, and wire cutters. Photos of those items can be seen here. The images, which were just declassified by the Department of Defense, also include a picture of a ramshackle Baghdad safe house described as an “al-Qaeda torture chamber.” It was there, during an April 24 raid, that soldiers found a man suspended from the ceiling by a chain. According to the military, he had been abducted from his job and was being beaten daily by his captors. In a raid earlier this week, Coalition Forces freed five Iraqis w

Guantanamo prisoners have no place to go
(ADNKI).- The US military has cleared as many as 85 Guantanamo prisoners for release but they are still at the prison camp because they have no where to go. Only three have gone home. Eighty-two remain at the prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as US officials try to find a country that would accept them. In many cases, the prisoners' countries do not want them back. Yemen, for instance, has refused to accept some of the 106 Yemeni nationals at Guantanamo. US laws prevent the deportation of people to countries where they could face torture or other human rights abuses. Virtually, all the prisoners at Guantanamo come from countries that the State Department has cited for records of human rights abuses. There are 17 Chinese Muslim separatists who have been cleared for release but fear they could be executed for political reasons if returned to China. Compounding the problem are persistent refusals by the United States, its European allies and other countries to grant asylum to prisoners wh

Blair: Iran must free naval prisoners in days
I am really sort of surprised that the EU has backed Britain on this. In theory they are supposed to support each other against such blatant aggression but the Euro socialists normally seem to have such a soft spot for radical Islam. Maybe France in particular and Germany to a lesser extent are finally seeing what a real cancer radical Muslims have become in their countries. France has more Muslims immigrants than America has illegal's from south of the border and at least our illegal's are only stealing all our social service dollars and not trying to behead or blow us up. Sooner or later we are going to have to face radical Islam not just in Iraq, Iran or Syria. We will be facing them in suburban America not in suicide airliners but face to face in the streets much as they have in France the last 2 years. These are a people and culture that time has forgotten. Radical Islam has more in common with the Visigoths or Vandal hordes than modern day America. I just hope we donÂ’t wait to

      Belarus - Political Prisoners
Question: What concrete steps is the State Department engaging in to advance the release of political prisoners and promote human rights in Belarus?Answer: We take every opportunity to urge the Belarusian authorities to free all persons jailed on politically motivated charges. President Bush reinforced this commitment to the people of Belarus in his 2007 State of the Union message. Within the last year, the United States has taken numerous measures to pressure Belarusian President Lukashenka to release political prisoners. This week, the Department of State met with a delegation of Belarusian opposition political leaders and civil society activists to discuss further steps that the United States might take to support the defenders of freedom and democracy in Belarus. This delegation included Irina Kozulina, the wife of Belarusian political prisoner Aleksandr Kozulin, and Serhei Matskevich, a former political prisoner. In January 2007, President Bush signed into law the Belarus Democracy

This world is, in a way, a projected image of the human mind. If some characteristics are more prevalent in the world, perhaps it is because those minds, those societies with such characteristics exert greater effort, leverage more resources, and therefore exert greater influence....
