In the past few weeks, I have listened to Barrack Obama's speeches. I have also talked to many people who believe Obama's plans or changes for this country is what we need. This is wrong. Prisoner of Teheran by Marina Nemat is page-turning and taut with action. If you didn't, I am not sure where you have been for the last two years.
After the Saddleback Forum on Saturday, there has been some controversy about whether or not McCain listened to the questions that were asked to Obama so that he could be more prepared for them. I have little interest in that story. None of the questions were surprises.

An interesting game of the following scenario-You have two people in jail, awaiting do process. You know they're guilty of some awful crime, but you have no concrete evidence. If they cooperate with each other and both deny the crime, they would get away with a fine, a slap on the wrist. Now, you separate them and inform each that if he/she confesses and the other doesn't, he/she would get off completely; and if they both confess, they'd get a more lenient jail sentence. MANAGUA, Nicaragua (Dec. 22) - American Eric Volz has gone into hiding after hastily leaving Nicaragua, where an appeals court overturned his conviction and 30-year-sentence in the slaying of his Nicaraguan girlfriend. The judge's decision to free the 28-year-old from Nashville, Tennessee, sparked outrage among some Nicaraguans who say the American received special treatment in the local justice system and should not have been released. In a statement broadcast on local television Saturday, the government denied it had acted on pressure from the United States. The U.S. "understands with absolute clarity that we don't respond to pressure," said Foreign Minister Samuel Santos, adding that the Nicaragua's justice system is "independent, and in this case, two out of three judges decided to free Volz."Increasing numbers of American have moved to Nicaragua - the second-poorest country in the hemisphere after Haiti - in recent years, buying up beachfront property and
Harry Potter is having a tough time with his relatives (yet again). He runs away after using magic to blow Uncle Vernon's sister Marge who was being offensive towards Harry's parents. Initially scared for using magic outside the school, he is pleasantly surprised that he won't be penalized after all. However, he soon learns that a dangerous criminal and Voldemort's trusted aide Sirius Black has escaped from the Azkaban prison and wants to kill Harry to avenge the Dark Lord. To worsen the conditions for Harry, vile shape-shifters called Dementors are appointed to guard the school gates and inexplicably happen to have the most horrible effect on him. Little does Harry know that by the end of this year, many holes in his past (whatever he knows of it) will be filled up and he will have a clearer vision of what the future has in store... Well, I sent off my first letter to a prisoner last night. Went and got a PO Box for a bit of anonymity and typed up the letter, printed it, and mailed it.
I’ve wanted to do this for many years. I found someone on Write A Prisoner. I had wanted to be completely anonymous and do it through an email account, but that seems to be impossible at this point.
She’s young, but we had some things in common so I thought it would be a good start. I hope I don’t get murdered or something now.. I do worry about that a bit. But I do think I watch too many crime shows like CSI and Law and Order, and too many murder mysteries. So hopefully this is just a normal world thing and it will work out good.

A former prisoner of the Pentridge Prison, Melbourne, Australia, decided to buy his own jail cell, where he had spent several years for fraud and robbery.Mr. Alford is not going to live in the cell again. He needs it as a place to arrange a wine storage facility, after the commercial redevelopment of the prison. Before it was closed, the Pentridge was the most notorious prison in the country, keeping the most dangerous criminals inside its walls.Mr. Alford, an ex-barrister, went to jail after gambling and alcohol addiction made him plunge heavily into debts. As a result, he began stealing from trust funds. A bit later he failed in his attempt to rob a bank with the sawn-off shotgun.Although having such past, Mr. Alford radically changed his life after leaving the prison. He gave up gambling and drinking, and became an author of a best-seller “Never Give UP” written about his past experiences.According to Mr. Alford, purchasing his former cell a rare opportunity, as not many people i
All ex criminals should write for the BMJ. This relates to a posting on Rapid Responses listed here and the previous posting on the blog listed here. It relates to my minor little experiment in the land of conceited editors at the BMJ. No other publication quite behaves like they do. The BMJ published a rant by Ms Penny Mellor. They have also published a piece written by her about her times in prison. A glorified piece was published so we could hail Dame Mellor. What wasn't mentioned of course was why she had got herself behind bars. Infact, the BMJ likes to keep this a their little secret. Mellor of course claims that she was wrongly accused and sentenced. She allegedly has made a number of assertions to various people about her appeal. The facts though remain that the judgment holds fast. Mellor's judgment in court stated that she had indeed lied to the police. If so, why on earth should we believe anything she says in any journal. Has she suddenly seen the light? The BMJ though be
It all started with the BMJ's piece on the GMC dropping the charges in the Climbie case. This is the link to the inquiry with respect to the tragic case surrounding Victoria Climbie. There is a grand dad doctor floating around the BMJ making postulations that no other doctor quite understands. His name is Dr Michael Innis . Dr Adjaya quite rightly summarises Innis's theory and moves on to say he is wrong. Dr Adjaya states "He asserts that the doctors involved in Vicotria's case missed a case of Kawasaki disease on presentation of Victoria to the Central Middlesex Hospital, and that Vitoria died of that disease, which went unrecognised. So he claims thatVictoria did not die of child abuse .He bases his assertion on the bloodshot eyes , the oozing pus from Victoria's fingers and multiple scars of various ages and sizes including the marks around the wrists found by the pathologist...all being typical presentation of Kawasaki disease". "Dr Innis is wrong. Victoria died of Physical Abu

Salman Khan was alloted 343 identity at Jodhpur jail on Saturday. He looked totally frustrated and pale while he was accompanied to the police custody. He was given this verdict on eve of his hunting of rare chinkara deer in 1998.The dramatic jailing, which drew hundreds of his fans to the court and the prison complex, came a day after a district court upheld the five-year jail term given to Salman by a lower court. Salman has been convicted of poaching a chinkara deer at the Ghoda farm near Jodhpur on the night of September 28, 1998 while filming Sooraj Barjatya's blockbuster Hum Saath Saath Hain. Jail sources told IANS that Salman had been sent to barrack no 1.5, where the hugely popular actor had spent three nights in April 2006 before he got bail. Giving him company is Mahesh, who was with Salman during his first jail also. Jail officials said Salman may be a celebrity but he would wear the white prison dress like everyone else and get no special treatment. "We will follow t

ReviewsFor most children, summer vacation is something to look forward to. But not for our 13-year-old hero, who's forced to spend his summers with an aunt, uncle, and cousin who detest him. The third book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series catapults into action when the young wizard "accidentally" causes the Dursleys' dreadful visitor Aunt Marge to inflate like a monstrous balloon and drift up to the ceiling. Fearing punishment from Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon (and from officials at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who strictly forbid students to cast spells in the nonmagic world of Muggles), Harry lunges out into the darkness with his heavy trunk and his owl Hedwig. As it turns out, Harry isn't punished at all for his errant wizardry. Instead he is mysteriously rescued from his Muggle neighborhood and whisked off in a triple-decker, violently purple bus to spend the remaining weeks of summer in a friendly inn called the Leaky Cauldron. What Harry has to face as he b

Here's a real curiosity that has become one of my favorite films. David Mamet's The Spanish Prisoner is a modern noir with a lot of familiar elements. There's the flawed hero wrongly accused, the femme fatale, and the guy who appears to be a friend, but is actually much worse. Macguffins also abound. This film seems to occupy a strange place in a strange land. If you are familiar with Mamet (Spartan), you will recognize his repetitive and rhythmic style of writing. The otherworldly way people talk here puts the movie in a parallel world that looks normal, but feels somewhere else. What you won't recognize is the zero profanity count in this film--something none of his other films can claim.I also like how low-key the entire film is. This scene is a perfect example of this. Office temp Susan (Mamet's wife, Rebecca Pidgeon) has taken a liking to good guy Joe (Campbell Scott). Here she displays her intentions both with her words and body language. Since this is a noir, nothing can be
National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day, 2007, A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America The men and women of the United States Armed Forces have made great sacrifices to defend our Nation. They have triumphed over brutal enemies, liberated continents, and answered the prayers of millions around the globe. On National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day, we honor the brave individuals who put service above self and were taken captive while protecting America and advancing the cause of freedom.Throughout our Nation's conflicts, American prisoners of war have defied ruthless enemies and endured tremendous hardships as they braved captivity. Their strength showed the power and resilience of the American spirit and the indomitable character of our men and women in uniform. Their sacrifices are a great example of courage, devotion, and love of country. Our Nation's former prisoners of war have helped secure the priceless gift of freedom for all our citizens,
Robert Gates, US Defense Secretary, said that the prisoner abuse scandals, both at Guantanamo Bay and Iraq, have damaged the reputation of the United States and that steps need to be made to show the world the US military is still out to do good in the world. During his speech Gates did not talk about the war in Iraq, but did say that the United States needs to do a better job of explaining their actions and their politics.
Gates said that over the last century most of the people thought that “while we might from time to time do something stupid, that we where a force for good in the world,” and that while some might still believe that, he thinks “we also have made some mistakes and have not presented our case as well as we might in many instances. I think we have to work on that.”
However, the US was not the only country he talked about, as he mentioned in the speech that the NATO allies need to follow through with their promises help the economic and mili

A Canadian man nearing the end of his 5 year sentence for assault at Rockwood Instution, a Canadian minimum security prison, was hit with the rarely used charge of wilfully injuring cattle. Albert Boucher was performing chores on the prison farm when one of the cows resisted its daily milking. Boucher struck the cow with a broomstick and injured the cow’s udder. Boucher tried to plead guilty to the charges since he admits to hitting the cow but Judge Marva Smith rejected his plea because he refused to admit intention to hurt the cow.
I just hit it once in the butt. I didn’t think there’d be any repercussions that would be this serious.
The cow has fully recovered from its injuries. Boucher’s next court date is in early October. The Crown’s attorney is recommending 6 extra months in jail for Boucher.

Mario Chanes de Armas, who fought alongside Fidel Castro in the Cuban revolution only to spend three decades as a political prisoner when he spoke out against communism, died Saturday at Hialeah Hospital. He was 80.
Chanes de Armas had been in a Hialeah nursing home, but became ill Saturday and was taken to the hospital, said his sister, Belen Chanes de Armas.
''For us, he was a very special, special, special man,'' said Belen. ``He died quietly, but was a man who had defended his country.''
Considered one of the founders of the Revolution, Chanes de Armas survived the Moncada attack, trained in Mexico, came over on the yacht Gramma and lived to greet Castro in Havana on Jan. 9, 1959, when the conquering heroes arrived on top of a U.S. Sherman tank.
Instead of joining the revolutionary government, Chanes de Armas chose to his work in a brewery. Two years later, after watching Castro betray their movement, he spoke out against communists and was tried as a counter
