A study of 74 breast cancer patients at the Ohio State University Medical Center found that 16 percent of them (12 women) suffered from PTSD 18 months after diagnosis. Apparently the whole reason for his and Prior's injuries relates to a camping trip the two took together after the oft-maligned 2003 season. In late November, 2003, the two took to the Appalachians in search of some emotional and spiritual cleansing. Instead of the usual faith and/or progs approach of drinking yourself stupid over a Cubs loss, both Prior and Wood felt that a reconnection with nature was the way to get things back into focus. After a full day of hiking, Wood (who was walking a few yards in front of Prior) noticed the perfect spot to set up the tent. The 30-year-old right-hander allowed seven earned runs on 22 hits and four walks with 16 strikeouts over 17 1/3 innings. Though he's long since lost his plus fastball, Miller still has a knack for the K. And with the potent Cubs offense behind him, he could provide a decent return in NL-only play. Just keep in mind that his spot in the rotation is anything but secure with the talented Angel Guzman waiting in the wings and Mark Prior -- as always -- on the comeback trail. Mark Prior had his best outing of spring on Thursday, holding the Padres to one earned run on four hits and two walks over four innings. Even more encouraging, at one point Prior reached 93 mph on the radar gun, according to the Cubs television broadcast, up from previous reports of an 89 mph max-out. "Prior threw much better," manager Lou Piniella said. "It was a big improvement over his last start here in Peoria [March 5]. TMZ has found court documents which reveal that Richie pled no contest four years ago to driving under the influence. Under California law, if Richie is convicted of DUI as a result of Monday's arrest, the judge must impose a jail sentence.
The law requires a mandatory sentence of five consecutive days in county jail as well as a one year license suspension for anyone twice-convicted of DUI. In addition, Richie would be ordered to attend an alcohol education program for a year-and-a-half, even if the second conviction is not alcohol-related.

I'm not a fan of novels that read more like screenplays than they do novels, and I find myself avoiding authors who have fallen into that bad habit. Writers like James Patterson, Michael Crichton and Dan Brown (among others) come immediately to mind. I find, too, that books with 60 or 70 short, choppy chapters will almost always fall into this type and that's why I've only read one Tami Hoag novel other than Prior Bad Acts. So I decided to take a different approach with this one and chose the audio book version rather than the more than 500-page printed version of the novel. And I enjoyed it because it was perfectly suited to the way that I listen to audio books in fifteen minutes spurts three or four times a day.
