This means the Prime Minister has been away overseas for almost the entire fasting month.Hopefully it is not too taxing for the Prime Minister to be doing all this travelling on an empty stomach, especially accompanied by a new wife who has little or no experience fasting. But since they are travelling, it is alright if they miss fasting for three or four weeks. This is Islam Hadhari - you just have to be civilised. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s race to majority
Although Canadians, in general, seem to be more comfortable with the Conservatives, they hold mixed feelings when asked about Prime Minister Stephen Harper. A poll conducted by the Strategic Counsel shows the Conservatives and the Liberals deadlocked, with each being named as the first choice of 33 percent of respondents. In general though, Canadians seem satisfied with where the country is headed with its current Conservative party. When asked if the country is on the right track, 57 percent said “yes”. That’s down 4 percentage points from last year at this time, but up more than 10 points since the final days of the Liberals in early 2006. Traditional views on Canadian politics and parties also seem to be changing. Liberals who say they might vote for another party, list the Conservatives as their second option - a reversal from the period before the 2006 election. UK Prime Minister to holiday on home shores
Gordon Brown, the UK Prime Minister has chosen to spend his Summer holiday in the UK.   He’s been reading the Europe a la Carte blog and decided that there’s so much to see and do in the UK that you don’t need to jet off to foreign shores to have a great holiday!  His precise holiday location has not been divulged, so I don’t know if he will holiday in his and my native Scotland. Crieff in Perthshire  Why not be inspired by my guides to less well know destinations in Scotland?

      Prime Minister's Petitions: School Libraries
I have publicly supported three petitions on the Prime Minister's epetitions web site... and none of them have succeeded. That is, all of them have been rejected with a formal response - there is no record on the site of successful petitions, I note. (Can we draw some sort of conclusion from that, do you think?)The last petition - "We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to make the provision of professionally staffed libraries within all schools, both secondary and primary, statutory."- received a disappointingly low level of support (1,794 signatures) so it is unsurprising that it failed. However, the level of misleading verbiage in the response is disappointing (I assume that it doesn't actually demonstrate ignorance), and I reproduce the response in full below:The provision of a school library is not a statutory requirement and there are no current plans to alter this situation and change the legislation. It is the Government's policy to put as much money as possible dire

Poll: Gordon Brown As Prime Minister
Gordon Brown was the only MP to stand for leader of the Labour party after Tony Blair resigned/retired and will become the new PM by default on June 27th. So the question is, will he do a good job? The dowdy Scot has made a very good chancellor of the exchequer, and has had his eye on the big job for the entirety of Blair’s tenure as Prime Minister. I think it’s time we find out what people think about this issue so let me know your thoughts by voting, and also leave any comments you’d like to make on the topic below. President Bush Prime Minister Blair VIDEO PODCAST
President Bush Participates in Joint Press Availability with United Kingdom Prime Minister Blair Rose Garden In Focus: Global Diplomacy, 11:23 A.M. EDT PODCAST OF THIS ARTICLEPRESIDENT BUSH: Thank you. I'm pleased to welcome Tony Blair back to the White House. He is a good friend. He has led the British people for a long time, since 1797. (Laughter.) You know, I was sitting with Tony on the Truman balcony last night, and we were discussing a lot of issues. And it dawned on me, once again, what a clear strategic thinker he is. Somebody asked me the other day, how would you define Tony Blair and your relationship with him?I said, first of all, it's cordial, it's open, and I appreciate the fact that he can see beyond the horizon. And that's the kind of leadership the world needs.I do congratulate the Prime Minister for being a -- when he gets on a subject, it's dogged. Witness his patience and resolve regarding Northern Ireland. And congratulations for your leadership. We talked about

Israel's Prime Minister Says He is Ready to Discuss Saudi Peace Plan
From The Israel Project:Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said this week that he's ready to sit down and talk about the Saudi peace plan with leaders of Arab nations wherever and whenever they're ready. [1] "We heard about the Arab Peace Initiative, and we say come and present it to us," Olmert said at a conference in Jordan Tuesday. "You want to talk to us about it; we are ready to sit down and talk about it carefully." Wherever the talks are held, he said, "I'm ready to come." [2] The Saudi initiative - first introduced in 2002 and revived in March 2007 - calls for Israel to withdraw from all of the land it gained in the defensive Six Day War, when the armies of Arab countries amassed on Israel's borders. June 5 marks the 40th anniversary of the war, in which Israel opened Jerusalem's holy sites to people of all faiths. A key controversy in the Saudi plan is that it would encourage millions of Palestinians to move into Israel. Many experts however do not see this as practical

Shimon Peres, at his age, is not suited to be prime minister
He never was to begin with, of course. But MK David Tal seemed to think otherwise:Vice Premier Shimon Peres told Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Wednesday evening that he does not see himself as a candidate to replace Olmert in the prime minister's office. The two agreed, however, to work together to promote Peres' bid for the presidency.Peres' comments came hours after Kadima MK David Tal said he was suited to be prime minister, in the wake of calls by senior Kadima members for the party to begin preparations to replace Olmert. That's interesting to see that Peres doesn't see himself as being fit to be prime minister. As for Tal, he was one of these party defects who jumped from party to party at least twice, from Shas to a small party once formed by Amir Peretz called One Nation, and then to Kadima, because he really didn't have much loyalty to begin with to any party or its platform.

Will Tony Blair No Longer Be Prime Minister Of Britain?
How Will History Regard Prime Minister Blair?Exactly ten years after Tony Blair swept to power as Prime Minister of Britain, it is all over. He has now told the world that next week he will formally announce that he is quitting. And when he goes, his party and most of the voters here will heave a sigh of relief. But how has he fallen so low in the public esteem? We have had ten years of steady economic growth, the government has poured money into schools and hospitals, and he has finally brought the warring parties of Northern Ireland together. His last act of office will be to go to Belfast and give his official blessing to a power sharing deal between the Protestants and the Catholics which is perhaps his greatest achievement. So why is he so unpopular? To be frank, it is because of you, and in particular because of President Bush and the war in Iraq. When Tony Blair won power, Bill Clinton, his ideological soul mate, was in office. They stood shoulder to shoulder. And when the Republi

Japan's prime minister denies their war crimes, gets slammed for it
Japan is still in denial over their crimes from WW2, as their PM's recent actions show, and even in Canada, there's been plenty of anger:TOKYO–Anyone who doubts the Japanese army forced Asian women into sexual slavery in World War II should "face the truth," South Korea's foreign minister said yesterday as outrage grew over comments by Japan's prime minister that there was no evidence of the enslavement.Women's rights activists in the Philippines and a group of politicians in South Korea denounced the remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday that there was no proof so-called "comfort women" were forced into prostitution during the war.Chinese-Canadian politicians and community leaders also called on Ottawa to publicly condemn the comments. But one of the harshest reactions came from 81-year-old Hilaria Bustamante of Manila, who said she was kept as a sex slave in a Japanese garrison for a year in 1942 as a 16-year-old."What (Abe) said has angered me," she said.
