Toyota Motor Corp. is raising prices on some U.S. vehicles amid worries about its profit growth in the American market. The price increases of about 1 per cent will start in the middle of May, and include a $200 (U.S.) hike on the 2008 Yaris sedan, boosting the cost of the base model to $12,425. Extra features mean higher prices. Price and availability will force gas-guzzlers off the road. Price at the pump will also force people to use more reasonable means of transportation. The consumption of oil should go towards certain industries, which are deemed necessary like the airline industry, or towards humanitarian efforts. Allowing people to purchase too much car or too much house accelerates entropy or the loss of nonrenewable resources. It should be mandatory that people drive small cars when public transportation is not available. Strategically, it is a smart move. Given that oil is a nonrenewable resource and so much of the world’s civilization relies on its continuance, I am surprised that corporations and governments have not responded sooner to peak oil concerns. Also, do not forget climate change.

Sugarcane farmers are facing losses amid massive smuggling from Thailand and low input prices at major factories.
Everyday, 300-400 tons of refined sugar is being smuggled through the southwest border, causing losses of millions of dong to state coffers, said Dr. Ha Huu Phai, Secretary General of the country’s Sugarcane and Sugar Association.
