Couple of days ago we had gone to Arbor hills for a walk... possibly the 10th time so far. But every time I have walked in Arbor hills I have discovered something new a different facet of this nature preserve. It is small, only about 200 acres but full of surprises, nature and attractions. This time I also had a fleeting glimpse of a Bobcat, a species of wild cat which scampered into the bushes at lightening speed.But the highlight of this visit was finding a small lake in the middle of the preserve which is home to several turtles. At the first glance we saw several of them sun-bathing on a rock at the edge of the lake. As I walked around the banks and neared them one by one all of them jumped into the water out of fright. For some reason, I was compelled to check it out one day and I must say it’s pretty neat. The nature trails are wonderful especially this time of the year when the weather is just right. The Vera Carter Environmental Center welcomes you to the property with some compelling displays about the native wildlife in the area and gets you amped to see some swallowed tail kites, red tailed hawks, ospreys, or some bald eagles that are supposed to be in the preserve in great numbers. This weekend was warm and sunny with temperatures in the 80's. It was likely our last shot at summer activities, so we drove the boys up to St. Cloud where we visited Quarry Park and Nature Preserve in Waite Park. Opened as a park in 1998, the land was previously owned by local quarry companies and contains 30 abandoned rock quarries, most filled with water. There are several grout piles as well. These large hills of unwanted quarried rock (the large boulders were considered too small) are restricted to rock climbers with permits.We went specifically for the granite quarry called Melrose Deep 7. A short half mile walk from the parking lot, the swimming hole is usually filled with 116 feet of water (it was down 3 feet when we visited).Popular with students at St. Cloud State University, the main attraction is the chance to jump or dive from the rock walls lining the swimming hole. The Hawai'i County Council yesterday tentatively approved a plan to have the county try to buy and preserve 150 acres of coastal land in Ka'u that includes property where a developer wants to build a major new hotel and commercial project.
