      The Summer Preschool Rush
You might think that little Columbus, OH doesn't have the challenges of the big city. But you'd be wrong. We have our traffic (there's a reason we nearly named our hockey team the Orange Barrels), we have plenty of crime, and when it comes to early childhood education, we must also rush to find the best programs. (Although most don't require an interview.)OK, actually, preschools aren't that hard to find around here, and in Cordy's situation, we have a guaranteed preschool for her. But her school follows the district's calendar, so once June rolls around, we're on our own to find a good summer program for her.Summer camp guides are published at the beginning of March, and like many parents of three year olds, I snagged a copy and quickly began circling any program that looked promising. This from MSNBC:Study finds shy kids stay shy while rambunctious tots withdraw some Ever wonder if that quiet girl who hid in the back corner of the classroom ever burst out of her shell? Perhaps she became a whiz at computers. And what about the class clown? Did all his attention-grabbing antics develop into a charm that would later earn him big bucks selling timeshares in Bermuda? New research shows that in most cases the personalities displayed very early in life — as young as preschool — will stay with us into adulthood. The wallflowers will stay shy and reticent, though they will learn in time to be a little more sociable and assertive. And the average kids, the more resilient ones, will remain so. But there is an interesting exception: The study found that as the most noisy and r

He said he had told his teacher and Jarren, his preschool friend, got a "scolding". I commended that he did the right thing and should inform the teacher should such incidents happen again. In anyway, this is not the first incident since the twins joined the preschool. End of last year, both of them were beaten (on the chest and face) by a bigger size boy in their class, though they were not physically hurt. Like most moms, I try to talk to their teachers when I drop them off and pick them up about their behavior and things that they are learning. I got lots of information yesterday. We talk a lot with the triplets' teachers about how they interact with each other and other kids outside our family. Being a mom of multiples makes me a little more sensitive to these kinds of interactions. It's really important to us that they develop as individuals and not a group.Lauren has had them fooled. I was just mentioning to my inlaws today how healthy Kayley’s immune system is. The child NEVER gets sick. She had strep throat in…::thinking to myself:: 2003 or 2004, I’m not sure which. That was the last time she missed school for any reason other than cramps, broken bones, being on vacation, or mommy sleeping through the alarm. She had perfect attendance during 3rd and 4th grade, and she would have in 5th grade had it not been for her 27 tardies. I’m sure her steel-toed immune system is due to the fact that she was sick ALL THE FRIGGIN TIME when she was a toddler. I vividly recall a couple of years of using up my sick days at work to take care of a VERY sick Kayley. She always had some pukey/poopy virus. She always had an ear infection. She always had snot dripping down her face. I had her at the chiropractor getting adjustments to help with her ear infections, and I put vitamin drops in her orange juice, I bought chewable Echinacea tablets from the health

Preschool's the prescription for state's education system
PANEL RECOMMENDS EXPANDING ELIGIBILITYThe Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence emphasizes that early childhood education is the method to improve the entire educational system in Kentucky. That's why a panel of education leaders recommends that pre-kindergarten should be expanded to include children 3 and 4 years old whose families live at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. The state's current preschool program serves 4-year-old children whose families live below 150 percent of poverty level, and children ages 3 and 4 with disabilities."Investing in a child's early years is the smartest way Kentucky can improve education for all and head off problems in the future," executive director Robert Sexton said. "It's time to take the next step: quality, voluntary preschool for all who want it, and improved and adequately funded early childhood programs for families and children." ...This from the Herald-Leader.

"It's hard for me to believe that I make too much money in order to qualify for free preschool when I have to rotate my bills each month."The two candidates for Kentucky governor agree.Republican Gov. Ernie Fletcher and his Democratic opponent, Steve Beshear, say Kentucky must expand pre-kindergarten and fully fund full-day kindergarten, according to a Courier-Journal interview and survey of the candidates. They also endorse additional pay raises for teachers. Bargains, Preschool-Style
Preschoolers have bargaining skills that would put a Hutt to shame. Case in point:Noah and I went out on the porch to watch the rain earlier today. Noah likes to run out and stand in the rain until he is soaking wet. Sometimes I allow him to do this--if we don't have to be somewhere or I don't mind giving him a bath right away. Today was not a "standing in the rain" day.Noah: How about I just put my shoes in the rain? Okay, I could just put my arm a little in the rain. How about I put your bottle of water in the rain? I could dump your water out and fill it with rain water. You could drink the rain water. How about I just put the cap in the rain? Okay, I'm just going to put my head in the rain a little bit. Why, mama? I could take a bath in the rain. I would be nice and clean. What if we jumped in the rain? Just a little bit? Or maybe just our fingers? And so forth....

Illinois and New York plan to do the same. Hillary Rodham Clinton wants to spend $15 billion over five years on universal preschool funding. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke calls preschool one cure for inequality. The movement represents one of the most significant expansions in public education in the 90 years since World War I, when kindergarten first became standard in American schools. It has taken off as politicians look for relatively inexpensive ways to tackle the growing rich-poor gap in the U.S. They have found spending on children is usually an easy sell.It took a well-orchestrated campaign to put pre-K on the top of political agendas -- and

Typically a kid born after October 1st doesn't get to go to preschool until he is 3 years old, so he'd have to wait until October 30th to even register anywhere! Luckily Jay's school offers a Young 3's

      More States Offer Preschool
A new report from the National Institute for Early Education Research shows shows more and more states are adding pre-kindergarten programs as research highlights the importance of getting children ready to learn."Virtually every state has a very strong movement toward doing a better job with pre-k," said Arthur Rolnick, a senior vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis and part of a group of business leaders calling for giving low-income kids earlier access to public school.A report released yesterday finds states spent at least $3.3 billion last year on pre-kindergarten. That doesn't include money from federal and local governments, which contribute to the state programs. The state funding is up from $2.8 billion in 2005, according to the report by the National Institute for Early Education Research at New Jersey's Rutgers University. In all, nearly 1 million children, or 20 percent of the country's 4-year-olds, were in state pre-kindergarten last year — up from 1

Preschool and getting the right start in life
As the state of Nebraska has set aside money for an early childhood endowment and I somewhat passively view the increasing fervor surrounding preschool education, I cannot help but wonder what exactly we as a nation are desiring for our youngest members. There is a great deal of research out there confirming that early childhood development is key to later learning. Much of the brain has

      Beware of the preschool doctor
My three year old little guy has told us that he wants to be a doctor when he grows up. This jives well with the fact that his two favorite toys in the past several months have come from a now disemboweled and dismembered doctor's kit that he received for his 2nd birthday. When he received it all of its components fit snugly into the little case that it all came in.This story, though, is as much about him having strange favorite toys that he cannot be without as much as it is about poor bedside manners in dealing with "patients."He, like so many others his age sleeps with a certain stuffed animal, though it is really only stuffed in the nominal sense. It has retained little, if any, stuffing in it's midsection and if hanged upon a clothes line would fold over itself about as flatly as a bath towel. Woofy has only enough stuffing to fill his head and all four of his feet. The bulk of his stuffing has either been loved or washed to oblivion. Until he turned two he could not funct
