Just yesterday I watched the new "Pride and Prejudice" on the CD, the movie didn't live up to my expectations it was not all that good. The book gives sharp description of each character. Elizabeth is described as a beautiful intelligent girl but Kiera knightly looked more like Joe from little women than the character she was playing.Secondly, the movie didn't at all cover the details of the novel

Just last week, I admitted that I had not yet started to read Pride and Prejudice for the 5 Minutes for Books Classics Bookclub. I may have read it in high school, but since I didn't remember the outcome at all, I'm treating this as my first read. Lisa gave some questions as guidelines, and I've sort of incorporated them into this review.
Going into the book, I was of course familiar with
I was excited at the end of July when I saw that the new 5 Minutes for Books site was using Pride and Prejudice for its first Classics Bookclub selection, especially since I had just finished reading it earlier that week.

For the past two days I attended a settlement course in a very gorgeous hotel. It's rather late, considering I have been here since last June and know most of the absolute essentials, but it's still worth to attend, and I got to see new people and had free lunches, yay! The course is done to help people settling nicely in a host country. Unsettling employees and partners could jeopardize their posting, their unhappiness threaten their productivities because they are worried about other matters rather than their jobs, and the company could loose their valuable resources. So 2 days course in a very nice hotel with free lunches is worth spent. For those who just come to a new place, or even those who repatriate back after spending years in other countries, this course is very helpful. Pride and Prejudice was first written in 1797 under the title “First Impressions”. It was later revised and published under the title“Pride and Prejudice” in 1813.In the novel, first impressions do play an important part: Elizabeth is misled in her judgment and estimation of both Darcy and Wickham. Her regard and sympathy for Wickham and her hostility and prejudice against Darcy are due to the first impressions. But when we study the novel deeply andseriously we can easily see that the title “Pride and Prejudice” is more apt and more befitting to it. The first impressions which the character gets of each other take up only the first few chapters. The novel is more about the pride of Darcy and the prejudice of Elizabeth and the change of attitude in Darcy and Elizabeth’s corre
The range of Jane Austen’s characters is rather narrow. She selects her characters from among the landed gentry in the countryside. Sir Walter Scott very accurately describes this range: “Jane Austen confines herself chiefly to the middling classes of society … and those which are sketched with most originality and precision, belong to a class rather below that standard.” She omits the servants and the labourers. They appear wherever they are needed but they are usually not heard. Aristocracy also is hardly touched and if taken, it is only to satirize. Lady Catherine in “Pride and Prejudice” is arrogant, pretentious, stupid and vulgar. Austen finds herself at home only with the country gentry and their usual domestic interests. In spite of such a limited range, Austen never re
Irony is the very soul of Jane Austen’s novels and “Pride and Prejudice” is steeped in irony of theme, situation, character and narration. Irony is the contrast between appearance and reality. As one examines “Pride and Prejudice”, one is struck with the fact of the ironic significance that pride leads to prejudice and prejudice invites pride and both have their corresponding virtues bound up within them. Each has its virtues and each has its defects. They are contradictory and the supreme irony is that intricacy, which is much deeper, carries with it grave dangers unknown to simplicity. This type of thematic irony runs through all of Jane Austen’s novel. In “Pride and Prejudice” there is much irony of situation too, which provides a twist to the story. Mr. Darcy remarks abou
Jane Austen is not a proclaimed moralist. Unlike Fielding, her aim is not to propagate the morality. She believes in art for the sake of art. She is the pioneer of the novels. Therefore, her plots are well-knit. Her main interest lies in irony and there is a hidden significance of morality as we come across her moral vision in her novels through irony.Jane Austen is in a favour of social prosperity than individual. She upholds the organic unity of society. She stresses that the duty of human beings owe to others, to society and maintains that individual desires have to be sub-ordinate to the large scale. Lydia-Wickham elopement is passionate and irresponsible. It shows that how society’s harmony is disrupted and how others lives are ruined by the selfish act of the individual. On the oth
Though, marriage is the end of Jane Austen’s novel, yet it evolves more than the conclusion of a simple love story. There is a depth, variety and seriousness in Jane’s treatment of these topics.Marriage was an important social concern in Jane Austen’s time and she was fully aware of the disadvantages of remaining single. In a letter to her niece, Fanny Knight, she wrote: "Single women have a dreadful propensity for being poor - which is a very strong argument in favour of matrimony." The only option for unmarried woman in Jane Austen’s time was to care for someone else’s children as Jane Austen herself did; as there were no outlets for women. The novels of Jane Austen’s – especially “Pride and Prejudice” – dramatize the economic inequality of women, showing how women h
In Indonesia, when we go to restaurants, there are no other ways to grab waiter's attention but calling {this can go from mbak (sister) or ibu (ma'am), to unnecessary flirtatious remarks like sayang (darling) or cantik (gorgeous)}, waving (hand or napkin), or - these are extremely rude manners - whistling, clapping and flicking your fingers.I am told that in UK you should not do anything but engaging eye contacts (and souls, perhaps), until they realize that your plate is empty and you are ready for your second course. Rather than eye movements, any gestures will be considered rude. No calling "xcuse me!", no frantic waving, and don't you dare to whistle, clap or flick your fingers if you want to be ignored for the rest of the night, or worse, have your soup tasted like feet because proba
Jane Austen confines her creative activity to the depiction of whatever fell within her range of personal experience. While her range of observation in life is not so wide her work has been variously called as the “Two inches of ivory” and “three or four families”. All these titles exhibit the excellence as well as the limitations of her craft and outlook.Although she works on a very small canvas, yet she has widened the scope of fiction in almost all its directions. Her stories mostly have indoor actions where only family matters especially love and marriages are discussed. However, her plots are perfect and characterization is superb. All of her six novels, including “Pride and Prejudice”, have been controversial since their publication, on account of Austen’s limited rang

Something tells me that philosophers and religious leaders have thought of this idea thousands of years ago, but it struck me again today while driving in my car. In the past, I held the belief that if everyone learned to communicate on a higher level then wars and violence could be eradicated. After all, if we have a deep understanding of each other’s needs and wants we would be in a much better position to compromise and work together for a greater good.
Today I see that communication is not the answer, but merely the number one tool to accomplish this admirable goal. As with everything, the simplest answer is usually the best answer. Today, I have put my finger on the fundamental (the core idea) of stopping racism, prejudice, and violence.
Part of the way I choose to live my life, and what makes it so exciting for me, is that I often do experiments by altering my paradigm (the lens through which I see life). Such experiments are the key to living life by design. While driving

One of the sure signs of getting older is listening to Radio 2, not in some kind of ironic post-modern way but because, of all the options available, it seems like the best one. And if you listen to Radio 2 then it's pretty much required to like Stuart Maconie, since it seems like half their output involves him. Fortunately I fall into that category. The man's funny and it's always good to hear a Northern accent on the radio (even if it has been softened, presumably from too many years living in the South). So when I saw his book 'Pies and Prejudice - In Search of the North' I was interested. When I read the back cover 'A northerner in exile, stateless and confused' I thought yep that's me and promptly bought it (OK I put it on my Amazon wish list and somebody bought it for me several months later). And it's a great read. He writes like he talks, so if you like his shows you'll like the book. Any Northerner reading it will no doubt be disappointed by his lack of coverage of
Any observer of the dating scene will know that there is a wide array of people seeking inter-racial or inter-cultural relationships. The area is of quite some controversy, with some viewing mixed relationships as an attack on their culture or race, and others regarding it as the ultimate melting pot ideal. However, my view is that often it is more complicated than that and racism can live well in the minds of people who are seeking mixed relationships, and there are particular stereotypes that people have in mind. One case in particular is that of white men who are seeking ‘Asian’ women. This is a discussion of my findings on personal ads put out by white men in Asian press and Asian dating sites.Clearly, Asian women are in quite some demand in the personal columns and the internet. In particular, personal ads, whether on the internet or in the press, often cost money which means people are prepared to put significant resources into finding a partner. The targeting of minority pre
I found this to be a very interesting article via The New York Times. Please feel free to comment your thoughts, post, or email them to me to post on TLL.Even now, at 81 and with her memory beginning to fade, Gloria Donadello recalls her painful brush with bigotry at an assisted-living center in Santa Fe, N.M. Sitting with those she considered friends, “people were laughing and making certain kinds of comments, and I told them, ‘Please don’t do that, because I’m gay.’”The result of her outspokenness, Ms. Donadello said, was swift and merciless. “Everyone looked horrified,” she said. No longer included in conversation or welcome at meals, she plunged into depression. Medication did not help. With her emotional health deteriorating, Ms. Donadello moved into an adult community nearby that caters to gay men and lesbians.“I felt like I was a pariah,” she said, settled in her new home. “For me, it was a choice between life and death.”Elderly gay people like Ms. Donade

Author: Linda Gayle MillsPaperback: 216 pagesPublisher: University of Michigan Press (November 1999)Language: EnglishISBN: 0472109502(R)A Penchant for Prejudice combines a detailed empirical study of the decision-making practices of judges with a sophisticated theoretical argument which exposes contemporary myths about judging and suggests methods of incorporating the inevitable bias that is detected in this and other studies. Based on a unique study of the decisions of Social Security judges, the book challenges the meaning of judicial impartiality. Linda G. Mills finds that, in practice, bias is a consistent dimension of what is considered "impartial" decision-making. The results reveal that impartiality as the legal system now defines it, is itself a form of bias, and that a historically and contextually sensitive definition of bias, one which takes account of the communities and cultures that come to be judged in the legal system, must overcome the modern dual

This tale of love and values unfolds in the class-conscious England of the late 18th century. The five Bennet sisters - including strong-willed Elizabeth and young Lydia - have been raised by their mother with one purpose in life: finding a husband. When a wealthy bachelor takes up residence in a nearby mansion, the Bennets are abuzz. Amongst the man's sophisticated circle of friends, surely there will be no shortage of suitors for the Bennet sisters. But when Elizabeth meets up with the handsome and - it would seem - snobbish Mr. Darcy, the battle of the sexes is joined. Written by focus features Watch The Movie Here

Gay rights are human rights. It is a paradox that the same rights, that served as the moral basis of liberation from the communist yoke in Eastern Europe, are now denied a group most in need of them. Still, today this is the case in large tracts of our continent, remaining a stain on the very same shield of liberty set to protect the right of the individual.During the last few weeks, events related to LGBT-rights have given rise to both concerns and hopes about the situation of homosexuals in Central and Eastern Europe. Developments have clearly shown that homophobia is still rampant in the region, but all the same there are promising tendencies in some countries that at least some authorities have started to respond to international critique against official homophobia. Reviewing recent events, gives a somewhat more hetereogeneous picture than was the case only a year ago.LithuaniaA few weeks ago, a celebrity homosexual was beaten beyond recognition in Lithuanian capital Vilnius. Chihuahua (Mexico), May 31 (IANS) Two hundred women have overcome male chauvinism and superstition to carve out a niche - albeit tiny - in Mexico’s expanding mining industry, reports the Spanish news agency EFE.
Resistance to females in mining springs both from the sexism that remains rampant in Mexico and from miners’ lore, which holds that mines entered by women will experience accidents or see their mineral deposits run out.
Old-timers say such calamities occur when the feminine spirit that inhabits the mine reacts with jealousy to the presence of female rivals.
The president of the Mexican Mining Association, Xavier Garcia de Quevedo, said the country’s entire mining industry, with a workforce of 279,000, employs a maximum of 200 women.
The first mining company to promote the employment of women was Peñoles, which began training women 10 years ago at La Herradura, located in the northern state of Sonora and is Mexico’s largest open-pit gold mine.

I’m a firm believer in the phrase, “Two wrongs don’t make a right.” Here’s another little ditty I enjoy: “Treat others as you would like to be treated.”
We, as homosexuals, are sometimes treated as second-class citizens, discriminated against and often seen as sick or disturbed by certain religions based organizations. The emotional and mental effect is down right staggering.
As a result, we have created numerous organizations to battle this kind of treatment on a daily basis. We want others to sympathize with us, to understand the kind of scrutiny we face. We want an equal playing field on which to live our lives and yet, some of us take things to such an extreme, or should I say obtuse, angle that we undoubtedly don’t need to go to.

Elizabeth Bennet is the perfect Austen heroine: intelligent, generous, sensible, incapable of jealousy or any other major sin. That makes her sound like an insufferable goody-goody, but the truth is she's a completely hip character, who if provoked is not above skewering her antagonist with a piece of her exceptionally sharp -- but always polite -- 18th century wit. The point is, you
