1968 was a different deal, a time of revolution and turmoil, of people fighting in the streets. Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. were gunned down in the United States, students occupied the Sorbonne in France and Warsaw Pact tanks rolled into Prague. It was a lot to digest at one time, and four decades later it still seems overwhelming. But the intervening years should lend some insight an

I don't know where the bag was made, nor do I know the age of the bag, although I suspect it was created in the mid to late 1800's. I also don't know the proper value of it, but the price was right, so I brought it home. The body of the purse is complet

When poetry was king By Darrell Jónsson For The Prague Post7 May, 2008 May Day may have been relatively quiet in Prague this year, but during the Cold War it was a political flash point. In 1947, the U.S. Congress decreed May 1 Loyalty Day, hoping to stave off its growing international communist overtones. This did nothing to stop the celebration of the Marxist revolution in communist countries, where over the next couple of decades the date threatened to become as big as Christmas. This set the stage for one of the most memorable May Days ever in Prague. In 1965, when American beatnik poet Allen Ginsberg was crowned King of May and paraded through the streets, it was clear to the Czechoslovak secret police that the celebration had drifted way off-m

Our trip to the capital of the Czech Republic Prague took place during the last week of March, however, judging by the weather, it could have been December just as well. During those three days in Prague, we've seen more snow than through the whole winter. Sudden changes of weather conditions didn't prevent us from completing our task and we've divided our bookstore checklist into two days. (Yes, in order to use our time efficiently we actually prepare a list of the bookstores we wish to visit before we arrive to our destination... There's still some space for spontaneous discoveries tho...) We already had three bookstores in our Guide listed under Prague, so we decided to check those out first. Our first stop was at the bookstore bearing the famous name of William Shakespeare - Shakespeare

Where? Prague, The Czech RepublicVisited: March, 2008A cozy bookstore by the name of Big Ben is a common meeting point for expats in Prague. Unlike its name suggests, it's neither big, nor Ben. No, seriously, it is a rather small place with a pleasant, almost family-like atmosphere. For people spoiled by second hand bookstores in other parts of Central Europe (yes, we mean Budapest), the prices may seem a bit high. However, for those accustomed to regular priced bookstores with new English stock, Big Ben may not appear expensive at all.The selection of books offered in Big Ben is actually very good, taking the limited available space into consideration. The books are arranged in several categories, we really appreciated the fiction and the children's section. Besides the usual paperbacks o
There have never been so much things being built in Prague as they are now. And prices of new flats are twice the prices that we had few years ago. I guess it's time to invest in countries such as Bulgaria now. Friend of mine has just bought two apartments here. On the other hand I'll have a few rolls of Kodak Portra with me :)I'd also like to share a link to one wonderful blog called Lung S. Liu Journal.Have a great week!

No matter whether during airport shuttle or private airport transfers, I get constantly asked about good places to eat at. I am not a type of person that goes out a lot. I usually eat quick snacks at petrol stops on my way from Prague Ruzyne airport or when I have more time I stop by „U Drahusky“ restaurant near the Prague airport Ruzyne. Such a tip would be good for our competitors, but not travellers. Today I found a very nice article in „MF DNES Magazine“ in which various authors focused on prestigious restaurants that offer delicious food and wines. These tips are not for travellers who are looking for cheap, but good meals. Eating in Prague in general is cheap compared to Western countries, but the restaurants I am going to mention below are not the case. Prepare about 1500

Currently we outsource vehicles bigger than 8 seaters. Prague as center of Europe is also the center for stag do's. Thus we want to supply high quality airport transfers for groups of upto 19 passengers who do not want to be split in several smaller groups and minibuses. Sprinter is a nice minicoach which offers full comfort as well as easy driving through narrow streets of Prague. Petrinska rozhledna/Petrin lookout tower is Prague's so called smaller version of Paris' Eiffel tower. It was build in 1891. When the weather is right you can see places in the Czech republic that are more than 100km far away. But than again, there are those fabulous views on Prague during your climb. Here's a link to the real Eiffel tower at Paris DP.

Hey. I finally made myself to write something to my blog. It's been happening so much and that`s why it`s especially difficult to begin with something. So...about THE trip. We left Vilnius at around 6:30 AM. My fellow-traveller Giedrius was examining Auto-route software while I was driving my BMW :) It didn`t take long to reach Kaunas and soon we were at the border of Poland. After having a coffee and a sandwich in the last Lithuanian Statoil gas station we finally drove into the territory of Poland for the first time since we`re in Shengen area. We drove many kilometers through Suwalki, Augustaw, Bialystok, Warsaw, Wroclaw etc. and finally we reached the border of Czech Republic. That meant we`re almost there. Here started the mountain roads. I`ve never driven under such conditions befo
Czech koruna (CZK) the official currency of the Czech republic gets stronger. It is breaking its maximum records on conversion rate to Euro as well as the U.S. Dollar. It may be unfortunate for travel and tourism in Prague as visitors find the city being more expensive. To give comparison, not even a year ago we charged 20 EUR each way (return airport transfers), nowadays (February 2008) we charge 24 EUR each. I find 20% rate-increase already dramatic. Although the rates of Prague airport transfers and taxi services have not raised much in local currency the impact on tourism is already obvious. Visitors tend to use cheaper ways to get from the airport to the city center such as Prague public transport or Prague airport shuttle services. Public transport prices were raised recently by alm

Prague is changing with brand new property developments springing up over the city. It is also attracting overseas property investors to buy property in the city.
For many people, the city of Prague leads to thoughts of beautiful old architecture, cafes and the Bohemian lifestyle. Lately, though, the capital city of the Czech Republic is seeing some fast rising developments alongside international investment in its economy. The combination makes this city a great place to look for real estate investors who want a home in this part of Europe or a place to earn some rental income.
I just found this image from summer and I think it perfectly illustrates how most of the guerrilla campaigns in Prague looks like (this one with parrots being for Prague ZOO). The agencies use tram stops. Well, if I have to spend money on advertising in Prague, I would use tram stops too. The second step would be the ads on trams.
We have a great new thing in Prague's public transport system. You can buy your ticket simply by sending short message from your mobile phone. No need to buy it at a vending machine, to put all those coins inside it and then having the ticket validated in a validating machine. You just write "DPT", send it to the phone number 9020620 and few moments later you have the "SMS ticket" in your phone. Sure, it is a little dangerous when you run down the stairs to the metro station trying to write and send that message... but it is so much faster.
On Friday my wife and I will go to Prague for the weekend, and I just realized that (Copenhagen aside) it will be the fifth European Capital I visit this year (the previous four being Warsaw, Berlin, London and Bern). This will be my third trip to the Czech Capital and I’m very much looking forward to spending a few days in the city that I visited the first time in the (not-so) good old days of the Iron Curtain.I know I often complain about how my life has change since I became a father (and of course it has), and how I never travel anywhere anymore. I guess the above lines tell quite a different story and that I really should stop whining?Swedish indie pop one-man band (does such a thing as a one-man band exist?)
