From Powerline, home of racist, forgetful fucktards:Michelle Obama: How Did She Do? Beats me. She needed to say she loves America, to talk about our servicemen and to praise Hillary Clinton. She did those things. The style wasn't smooth; she often seemed rushed and edgy, but I don't think many people will hold that against her. What mostly struck me was how over the top the finish was, with

Powerline News article link Osama bin Chomsky The transcript of Osama bin Laden's newest video, in which he speaks directly to American listeners, is available here. It is intensely interesting, for a number of reasons. First, the subject matter is Iraq, almost exclusively. Bin Laden and other al Qaeda leaders have said that Iraq is the main front in their global war against us. That sentiment is repeated in the video. Bin Laden begins by saying that he will "[discuss] the war that is between us," and that discussion is entirely about Iraq. Later, he says it is "our duty" to "escalate the killing and fighting against you" in Iraq, and that "our brothers are carrying it out." It has never been plausible to suggest that the war in Iraq is anything other than fundamental to our conflict with al Qaeda and related groups; after this video, any such suggestion is impossible.Second, the affinity between Muslim extremism and Western leftism has never be

Powerline blog article linkThe Border DealPaul noted earlier the rumor that Republicans in the Senate have caved and agreed to a deal on immigration that includes amnesty for illegals. Hugh Hewitt has the talking points that are being circulated by the Republicans. Hugh thinks the projected deal is a disaster, and he may be right. But on paper, at least, I don't think it's so clear. To me, the key is workplace enforcement. I don't think people come here from Latin America to go on welfare; they come for jobs. Many people who have studied the illegal immigration problem more than I have believe that this is the key: as long as illegals can make far more money here than in their own countries, no fence will keep them out, whereas if the lure of a good job is gone, so is their reason for coming here. So I put a premium on workplace enforcement. The Republican talking points say:The bill will create an Electronic Employment Verification System ("EEVS") so only legal workers ca
Everything goes in cycles. This is a lesson our lib brethren never seem to grasp. But being the inherent statists that they are it sort of makes sense. I was reading a piece by Bill Maher yesterday and he was going on and on about how much we learned from the French during our Revolution. And it is a fact that France did indeed help us a lot in our struggle against Britain. But that was over two centuries ago and a lot of things have changed in America and in France since then. When British troops were trying to burn the White House who amongst our forefathers would have believed that in 200 years they would be our staunchest ally? The only certainty is constant change. Paul from Power Line sees a change for the better between America and old Europe (Im not exactly sure why but libs hate it when we use the term Old Europe) and I agree with him. I think part of that is the enthusiastic manner in which a number of eastern European countries, freed from the boot of the old Soviet Un
Powerline Blog article link Light Bulbs Going OnMark Steyn:Everything's difficult, isn't it? In the Democratic presidential candidates' debate, Sen. Barack Obama was asked what he personally was doing to save the environment, and replied that his family was "working on" changing their light bulbs. Is this the new version of the old joke? How many senators does it take to "work on" changing a light bulb? One to propose a bipartisan commission. One to threaten to de-fund the light bulbs. One to demand the impeachment of Bush and Cheney for keeping us all in the dark. One to vote to pull out the first of the light bulbs by fall of this year with a view to getting them all pulled out by the end of 2008. ***This week, both the House and the Senate voted for defeat in Iraq. That's to say, Congress got tired of waiting for deadbeat insurgents to get their act together and inflict devastating military humiliation on U.S. forces. So America's legislators have voted to m

John at Powerline News dissects the same AP piece I posted here earlier. He exposes the subtle and not so subtle bias and lies on the part of the AP reporter. Major hat tip to John for a good read. ~RJH Powerline News article link Media Bias: How It WorksSometimes media bias is blatant and grotesque; it can extend to flat misrepresentations, use of fake documents, etc. Much more often, it is relatively subtle, as reporters push their version of a story in small ways, day after day. Here is a textbook example, via Power Line News.Yesterday, in an interview with the Associated Press, one of the world's leading weather experts, Dr. William Gray, blasted Al Gore for perpetrating global warming hysteria. Since Dr. Gray is generally recognized as the world's leading expert in the science of forecasting hurricanes, this is news. But let's examine how the AP handled it in the article that resulted from their interview. The AP begins in a straightforward manner:A top hurricane forecaster c
I wonder what Edward R. Murrow would think about todays "activist reporters"? It's interesting how the left so vehemently denies that the media has a liberal bias and at times they even call them conservative. I guess they don't watch Rather, Blitzer or in this case Michael Ware. He sounds like a cross between Bob Arnot and Jason Blair. And the media denying their own bias is even more laughable. The fact that over 90% of todays journalists are registered Democrats speaks volumes. I don't expect the slightest bit of backlash from CNN to Michael Ware either. Why would there be when they all think McCain and Graham are deserving of the abuse? I guess that uninvolved dispassionate reporters are a thing of the past. ~RJHPowerline blog article link "An Activist, Not a Reporter"We wrote here about CNN's report on Iraq, in which Senator John McCain gave a positive report on progress there, and was followed by CNN correspondent Michael Ware. Ware not only disagreed
Powerline News article linkWhy is it that Minneapolis, of all places in the United States, faces the eruption of controversies over Sharia law? From the Somali taxi drivers who refuse to transport passengers carrying alcohol to the Target cashiers who refuse to ring up pork products and the flying imams testing airport security, something's happening here. In today's Wall Street Journal Cross Country column, Star Tribune columnist Katherine Kersten draws the connections (subscription required): What's going on? It appears that both local circumstances and activists with a big-picture agenda play a role. Take the taxi drivers. Minnesota is home to tens of thousands of Somalis, most recent immigrants. Behind the scenes, moderate local Somali leaders are engaged in a power struggle with national Muslim organizations that seek to exploit this vulnerable population. Islam prohibits the consumption of alcohol but not its transportation, say Somalis who reject the taxi drivers' stance. Ye

to confirm that they were comparing murders/100,000 per month in Iraq to murders/100,000 per month in D.C. rather than comparing monthly figures to yearly figures.
I can tell you that nationwide we see approximately 1300 reported murders a month... with a large portion taking place in your larger cities. While this is smaller thant the 3000 plus per month that you read about constantly in Iraq, it is of course probably a much larger amount that one might think reading the papers. In other words, we have about 45 murders per day in the United States... I wonder how often the national media leads off with a story of an American murdering an American? We can answer that with the fact that people are still more obsessed with one murder that took place about 12 years ago.
