How long does it take to hack a Power Plant?
I start to get scared – more and more. Back in September I blogged on Critical Infrastructure Protection – Live which shows what would happen if somebody would be able to tamper with power generators. Now, during RSA there was a guy called Ira Winkler telling the audience that they had the job to do a penetration testing on a power company network and that they got in in a day. I do not think that this is surprising especially as part of their successful attack was using social engineering techniques (which the attackers usually do heavily) but it is still very, very scary! It is said that they gained access to the grid. The question is – how far. Read it yourself. Roger

Quad-core Xeons use small power plant to maul Opterons
A recent benchmark comparing quad-core chips asserts that Intel Xeon-based servers have an edge in performance but are complete power hogs when compared to the dainty energy appetite of AMD Opteron-based servers. The test was conducted by the computer performance consulting firm Neal Nelson & Associates. It showed Intel Xeon-based servers reaching 14 per cent higher throughput performance over similarly configured AMD Opteron-based servers, which consumed 41 per cent less power. Interesting results, considering Intel's bravado about power efficiency with the Xeon chips. According to the research firm, Intel's claim isn't necessarily incorrect from a narrow perspective. It's the wide angle that bites Chipzilla. "By themselves the Intel processor chips may use less power, but all c

2008-2009 PhD in Optimal Use of Biomass in Power Plant Boilers - Technical University of Denmark
PhD Project - Optimal use of biomass in power plant boilers Combustion and Harmful Emission Control Research Centre Department of Chemical Engineering A 3-year PhD position on the above mentioned topic is open at the CHEC (Combustion and Harmful Emission Control) Research Centre, Department of Chemical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark. *Supervisors: *Associate Professor Peter Arendt Jensen (paj@kt.dtu.dk), Associate Professor Flemming Frandsen (ff@kt.dtu.dk), Professor Kim Dam-Johansen (kdj@kt.dtu.dk). *Background: *Utilization of biomass on large power plants is a potentially efficient method to reduce net CO2 emissions and reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. Use of biomass fuels in large suspension-fired boilers may cause operational problems. One example is when straw is applied as fuel in suspension fired boilers whereby severe ash deposit formation in the boiler chamber often takes place. Improved technologies for ash deposit removal are therefore needed. This
