      Public Transportation and Poverty
When I was out on the road today, I got to thinking about how much it costs to maintain and drive an automobile. Doing some quick calculations in my head, I came up with a rough estimate of $8000 a year for my family's two vehicles. That figure includes one car payment, gasoline, insurance, taxes, maintenance, and repairs. $8000 represents 20% of our household income - almost equal to the national average of 19%, according to the Thoreau Institute. This figure has risen from 10% in 1935 and 14% in 1960. Let's get hypothetical for a moment. Let's assume that every American household spends $8000 a year on transportation. That comes to a total of $880 billion for the entire country.  Now, let's assume that we all reduce our transportation costs by 10%; we can car pool, buy more fuel efficie

Poverty and the Ability to Learn
Being the ever dutiful hearing officer, I'll start with a disclosure before I get to the substance of this post: I am passionate about the need to eliminate poverty in the USA, or at least to substantially ameliorate its effects. That having been said, let me state that I firmly believe there is an unfortunate and nearly direct relationship between the poverty of a child's family and his poor performance in school. This makes sense. If a child doesn't eat properly, it affects the brain negatively. If a household is constantly under the extreme stress associated with being poor, a child suffers emotionally. The side effects of poverty, high crime neighborhoods, the lack of the prospect of a better life, etc. also take their toll. It is difficult enough to educate a child under the best of co

They can get relief for their situation- if only they could afford it or were educated enough to be aware about their condition. Trachoma, a water-related eye disease is held to be the world’s leading cause of preventable blindness and largely affects those with limited access to water and health care. A child in Sub-Sahara Africa is as much likely to suffer as a person in contact with an affected person in a first world country. The World Health Organization report at least 6 million people who go blind due to trachoma and 150 million that are in need of treatment. If you ask me I would like to live in that house but I don’t think I could do the things she have done to get it. I know it’s more than hard work it involves being half naked in front of the camera and I could not do that I just don’t have the guts. There are a million ways to get millions but you just have to be brave, hardworking, determined, gutsy, and wise to get there. Hard work is not really enough you just have to be wise because I have seen people who are hard working and who grows old poor. Some people get rich because they grab the opportunity that was shown to them. Some people get rich by chance while some people get rich by their decisions

Poverty is one of the main problems which have attracted attentionof sociologists and economists. It indicates a condition in which aperson fails to maintain a living standard adequate for his physicaland mental efficiency. It is a situation people want to escape. Itgives rise to a feeling of a discrepancy between what one has and whatone should have. The term poverty is a relative concept. It is verydifficult to draw a demarcation line between affluence and poverty.According to Adam Smith - Man is rich or poor according to the degreein which he can afford to enjoy the necessaries, the conveniences andthe amusements of human life.Even after more than 50 years of Independence India still has theworld's largest number of poor people in a single country. Poverty
Driven by a painful mix of layoffs and rising food and fuel prices, the number of Americans receiving food stamps is projected to reach 28 million in the coming year, the highest level since the aid program began in the 1960s. The number of recipients, who must have near-poverty incomes to qualify for benefits averaging $100 a month per family member, has fluctuated over the years along with economic conditions, eligibility rules, enlistment drives and natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, which led to a spike in the South. But recent rises in many states appear to be resulting mainly from the economic slowdown, officials and experts say, as well as inflation in prices of basic goods that leave more families feeling pinched. I often think how lucky I am to have been born into a family that was decently well-off financially. I was able to get a loan for my first car (the same one I still own - and use seldom) only because my mother has been in the same, decently well paid job for decades and she agreed to co-sign. Many young people where I'm from get their first vehicle or financial help to do so from their families. Having a car is a big deal in North America today, where many cities are simply no longer designed for people who don't own one, people whose families don't have any extra income to spare for this luxury. Some neighbourhoods lack basic amenities, everything from health care to grocery stores. In neighbourhoods where the vast majority of residents are poor, stores and services may move out because t

On average a family of four is considered to be living in poverty if its annual cash income is below $18,810, according to government guidelines. Children of Poverty
The current Buffalo News series on Children of Poverty highlights a problem but also tends to encourage the continuation, if not the escalation, of government programs that trap people in poverty. Our nation was founded upon the principle of equal opportunity, not entitlement and redistribution of wealth programs.  The billions of dollars taken as taxes annually and spent on welfare, free medical care and other social programs robs the economy of the capital necessary to provide opportunities for those who want them. The only real winners under the current system are the politicians.  Sponsored By: Images by Mike in WNY Custom Buffalo themed gifts here, personal or business, bulk discounts available

      Religion and Poverty in Mississippi
In feudal Europe, Christianity helped to maintain the rigid class structure. The landowners benefited greatly from serfs who were convinced that complying with the unfair system in this life would lead to heavenly rewards. The church, in turn, received money from the landowners. It seems everyone benefited except those pesky serfs. Something similar is happening today in Mississippi, and I cannot help but wonder what role religion is playing in maintaining our despicable status quo.Let's start with one simple, undisputed fact: Mississippi is the poorest state in America. This is nothing new, as I'm fairly certain we've been in the bottom 5% since the Civil War. Reasonable people can disagree about the historic causes for this fact and about how best to change it, but there is no disagreement over our last place showing on a list of median incomes.Believe it or not, Mississippi also has the highest sales tax on food in America. In fact, Mississippi is one of only seven states that ta

Can You Survive On $1 A Day? Support The World Food Day. Make Poverty History
It is unimaginable in Singapore that anyone can possibly survive on $1 for a day as a meal at the foodcourt does not come cheaper than $3 and a bus ride from home to work place would have cost more than $1. But according to statistics, it is a fact that almost 1 billion live in poverty, with a daily income of less than $1. Even in a country where the living standards are low, I think it is still not possible to maintain basic needs such as adequate daily nutritional intake, safe drinking water, basic sanitation, a livelihood that can support survival, that can give a chance for a child to make his or her way through school, access to essential health services in a health emergency or a disease spell. When those conditions are not met, I think that is considered as extreme poverty. We always talk about education being one of the most effective keys to overcome poverty but for the poorest, education is more like a luxury. Parents cannot afford books, uniforms, stationery etc for their

      Poverty, Development and the Environment
I’m a bit of a bunny-hugger (and a tree-hugger, come to think of it) and while I’m baring my soul, I’m something of a people–hugger too. So the relationship that exists between these three is one that bothers me. Not in a keep-me-awake-at-night kind of way (not much keeps me awake at night) but I keep it in the corner of my brain with all the other things that I don’t understand, and in philanthropic moments, I try to make sense of it all. There’s an interesting paradox, you see, that exists between poverty, development and the conservation of the natural environment. And it’s often overlooked. There are two schools of thought. In the first, poor countries (and indeed poor communities within wealthy countries) are seen as the saviours of the environment, while rich countries are seen as the proponents of Mother Nature’s natural enemies; global warming and the disappearance of biodiversity.  However inadvertent, this is true to a

      Scarcity, Poverty, Apocalypse
DM: I'd like to talk with you about "scarcity" and "catastrophe". On the talk shows there is even discussion of an impending collapse of society due to dwindling oil supply. The concepts of scarcity and collapse are hardly new, and obviously the invasion of Iraq brought the issue of oil into sharp focus. Can we start with the sacred cow of scarcity?IB: Sure. With respect to oil, we should begin with the observation that the general problem for the petro-barons has always been glut, or to put it another way, how to keep oil scarce. They've done a pretty good job, although all monopolies have to be measured against De Beers, who have the corner on diamonds. They are the world's masters at constructing scarcity, in this case, of crystalline carbon, which is actually rather common in the earth's crust. So one thing to make clear is that the invasion and occupation of Iraq is not about absolute scarcity. For sure, the history of oil is complex, and the fluctuations in the supply of oil

An effective landing page is only as good as the visitors that it attracts. Hence, the next logical step after development of an effective landing page is to promote it. This involves attracting qualified visitors to it, by employing various online marketing efforts, viz. PPC or SEO , email marketing. Another frequently employed online marketing tool with the twin benefit of economy and effectiveness is Link Building. Link building is a practice of getting the other semantically similar websites to feature your link on their websites. Link building constitutes finding viable business partners willing to endorse your site. An authoritative link to your site counts as one vote toward your link popularity. Although the Census Bureau may have announced that the poverty rate in the USA has dropped to 12.3 per cent, the number of people without health insurance is on the rise. Surely something is not right? The number of Americans without health insurance has risen 2.2 million to a massive total of 47 million. I would have thought that is the poverty rate was going down, so would the number of people without health insurance, but this has not been the case. What do you think? Is there something wrong with the figures for poverty and health insurance? Source Written by Roy for Product ReviewsIn Sections: Health Insurance, Insurance

Govt projects poverty rate less than 15 pct
Coordinating Minister for People`s Welfare Aburizal Bakrie has projected that the poverty rate in Indonesia dropped to 15 percent, in view of intensified efforts laid down in the 2008 Draft State Budget to eradicate poverty in Indonesia. "We hope that by implementing the programs on improving the life of poor people, the poverty rate could be brought down to less than 15 percent," the minister told a press conference at the Office of Coordinating Minister for Economy in Jakarta on Thursday. The total number of the poor in Indonesia had dropped by 16.6 percent, or 37.17 million in 2007, while their number in 2006 reached 39.3 million. The programs that will be continued include the program on prospective families in the form of conditional cash assistance for education, healthcare and nutrition. The program was launched this year and will be continued next year with pilot projects in 49 regencies in seven provinces, covering 500,000 poor families at a cost of Rp 1.1 trillion.

      Poverty and Sleeping Elders
The issue of poverty is a reality for most parts of the world. While there are nations who do not show a striking number of poverty stricken individuals, they can be seen from the homeless elders, or often termed as “bums”, who look for rest and slumber in any public place they can. It is a fact that these people who are often found asleep in parks would be reprimanded and directed to go somewhere else. But to do they have somewhere else to go? Some would often be content finding a dark alley or abandoned building to sleep temporarily. But a permanent home is what they do not have. Bums and low life people may have done some mistakes and wrongdoings in their prime but just like us, they need to get their share of sleep and respite as well. It is hard to understand the cycle, but as far as sleep is concerned, it is a definite need for anyone in the world. The Ideas of Obama vs. Edwards on Poverty
Libertarian Democrat writer Terry Michael made an excellent argument in favor of his first choice, Barack Obama, over John Edwards. His arguments regarding the problems with Edwards’ economic populism should also be of interest to supporters of some of the other candidates. Michael reviewed some of the reactions to Edwards’ policies, agreeing with me The Onion best summed up the problems. Michael was impressed that “a low budget satirical tabloid knows a political huckster when it sees one.” His article concludes: If Democrats are loony enough to buy the reactionary left-liberal, complete-the-New-Deal, wealth re-distributionist economics that Edwards is hustling, we (I’m a libertarian Democrat) risk blowing a nearly sure thing in 2008. The middle class in this country is not falling behind. It is suffering from the psychological turmoil of “The Age of Abundance,” as Brink Lindsey describes it so well in his recent book. i just read an article on abject poverty.fifty percent of the world population lives in abject poverty.that’s a number that should be obscene to any human who has an active brain stem.the article contends that education is the solution to abject poverty.unfortunately, when you’re done educating those in abject poverty, you will end up with the same folks in abject poverty except they’ll be smarter.it strikes me that opportunity has to be there at the end of the day.opportunity is born from the resources to do things.if most of the world’s resources are owned or bought by a few wealthy nations, well you can educate until the bovines come home and not a whole lot is going to change.but i suppose education is as noble an endeavor as any, while we figure out how to overcome the rest of it.

ARTICLE: Energy Economics: A Place for Energy Poverty in the Agenda? by Fatih Birol [.pdf]
[summary]The global energy system faces three major strategic challenges in the coming decades: the growing risk of disruptions to energy supply; the threat of environmental damage caused by energy production and use; and persistent energy poverty. The first two challenges have attracted a lot of attention from the energy-economics community, much less so the need to address the problem of energy under-development. On current trends, the number of people in poor countries relying primarily on traditional biomass for their energy needs will continue to rise, while the number lacking access to electricity will barely fall.To change this course, decisive policy action is needed urgently as part of the broader process of human development. Meeting basic human needs, such as food and shelter, must be at the heart of any strategy to alleviate poverty.Modern energy services help enable those needs to be met. In practice, concrete improvements in human welfare can be realised quickly
