Postcard of Dancing Pavillion Robison Park, Fort Wayne, Ind.Originally uploaded by kristinafh I started collecting postcards of Fort Wayne about 4-5 years ago. I don't know what prompted me to start however, it has turned into a full-blown obsession of mine.A couple of Christmas's ago, I gave my aunts, grandmother, and mom, their own, framed set of Fort Wayne postcards. They were all pleasantly surprised as each of their sets contained very specific postcards of places that they had mentioned to me before - in fact - many years before. In some cases, the postcards were of buildings and recreational spots that no longer existed. If you ever want to get a good story out of your relatives - bring up a place that no longer exists! Timing is Important in Opening Your Biz and Postcard Mailing
If there is any similarity with opening a new business and campaigning for it, it is about the timing. The opening of your biz needs to be timely. And if you want to promote that business using postcard mailing, you also have to schedule it wisely. Some people in the business believe in luck. They will ask for a psychic’s guidance or go to a feng shui expert. They are willing to take all those hassles just to predict the proper time in which they should open up their business. Well, luck is good. Psychic’s predictions sometimes do come true. And feng shui offers some enlightenment to those who need it. But when talking about timing, the calendar will be your best bud. Business Location This is vital in this case. You have to know what the weather will be in the coming days and months.

      The 'Endangered, Subversive' Postcard
From In our age of privacy the postcard is an endangered, subversive species : Suggesting that postcards are, in fact, sufficiently alive to be dangerous would be more effective. Floating a rumour that the government wanted to ban them because, say, terrorists were using them in preference to email or mobiles, and low standards in schools meant MI5 couldn't read their handwriting - that would confer upon the postcard the aura of subversion its salvation requires. It would be wrong to be nostalgic about a golden age of postcards to the extent of scorning their usurpers, the email and the text message. In this country it is the continuously murmuring prose haiku dialogue of the SMS, rather than the email, which has supplanted the ink and paper billets-doux of lovers from the days

Or stay in the city centre and soldier on towards the Castle of Good Hope (Buitenkant and Strand streets), a pentagonal fortification built by the Dutch between 1666-1679 and South Africa's oldest surviving building. Try to catch a ghostly glimpse of Anne Barnard, the castle's former first lady whose apparition is said to haunt certain sections of the ramparts, with daily guided tours offered to the dungeons and torture rooms.

Most of all we were not impressed with the prices...but we got used to it in Switzerland...it's just an expensive country.

Postcard Headlines Commemorates Half a Year of Blogging
I almost forgot, but Postcard Headlines commemorates half a year of blogging this November. I don’t remember why Postcard Headlines is named the way it is. Maybe it has something to do with my fascination for postcards and love for newspapers and magazines. I guess the name just stuck. Today is not this blog’s date of conception or “birthday” so to speak, it having been created in the wake of my Election Day observations on the night of May 14, 2007. But how time flies. From posting comments mainly on the 2007 elections and the controversies surrounding it, I have added my archived writings along the way, and have since then: (more…)

      On The Postcard Collector Project
Postcards have been around as early as the 1800s. It is perhaps the cheapest form of communication between countries. From experience, it is faster too! Postcards tend to arrive faster than regular mail sent to the same international destination when mailed at the same time. To this day, it is still widely popular because it is convenient- easily available in stores. One isn't obliged to write a long letter either given that the regular size postcard only measures 3in x 5in. After writing a quick note, placing a stamp on it, you're done! The Postcard Collector project is an idea I've had for quite some time. I just wasn't sure how I will go about it until I came across a website where people from all around the world exchange postcards for free by signing up. By means of the postcard, one would write the other, and the person writes back! Some have created blogs showing all the postcards they have received from strangers who eventually become their friends. It's amazing how many n

      On Postcard Collecting
I've been a collector of postcards on and off. There was a time when I really collected them way back in grade school along with collecting stamps, stickers and stationeries and then my interest changed and then went back to it again a few years ago. At some point in your life, you must have been one too! It's a cheap enough hobby and it's a delight to find really funny or unique postcards! I have them in albums and it's neat to look at, like browsing through photographs. When a family or friend goes somewhere, I ask them to send me one or when I'm away, I would buy for myself and then send some to people! Sending out a postcard is so easy to do here in America where almost every street corner has a mailbox and the postman actually goes out daily to pick up the mails on the boxes! So postcards, local and international stamps are regular items in my purse. Wherever I am, either stuck waiting at the doctor's office, riding the train or just waiting somewhere, I could pop out a postc

Man Receives Postcard From Japanese Soldier 64 Years Later
A postcard that was written by Nobuchika Yamashita during a World War II battle in Burma finally reached the person it was written to, Shizuo Nagano, after 64 years.  During those 64 years, the card resided in Burma, Nagasaki, Arizona and Hawaii before finally Nagano in a southern Kochi prefecture. Before Yamashita was drafted into the war, he worked at a store with Nagano, and so they became friends.  After receiving the letter, Nagano, who is now 80-years-old, said “I had never dreamed of meeting him again like this,” and that “It is like a dream.” Part of the postcard, which was dated on February 16, 1943, says “Mr. Nagano, it’s been a long time,” and that “it must be still cold (in Japan).  Over here, the climate is like July or August in Japan.”   Yamashita died in 19944 from an illness in Burma, which is now Myanmar. The way in which he received the card is what makes this story special.  A student at the Mukogawa Women&

      A Postcard from Darjeeling
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway chugging along the 'Ghoom' - a graceful loop where the train takes a complete circle going under/over it's own tracks. I found this magical image in my archives - unposted earlier - because it seemed too dark. A slight retouch in Picasa made all the difference...Darjeeling, May 2005, F/5.6, 1/250sec, ISO-100

Postcard from a relative - surely not?
Monk and I have been busy most of the afternoon clearing up several users personal laptops as they experienced various difficulties, one of which was the latest postcard from a relative trojan. Fortunately, all but one of these people had recovery CD's - luckily I just happened to have a recovery CD for the other person. But the lesson is - keep the recovery CD safe - backup up your important data regularly and always ensure you have sufficient protection when surfing the web.

      Hey Ugly! Postcard Box
Hey Ugly! Postcards Hey Ugly! How about taking it old school and sending an "Ugly" postcard instead of an e-mail. Let the snail-man carry these cool postcards to your favorite friends. David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim are a husband and wife team living in Los Angeles. They met in art school where they began creating art and designing toys together. The Uglydolls were born in 2001 when overseas correspondence between the two progressed from David’s line drawings of a little orange, apron-wearing character named Wage, to Sun-Min’s 3-D versions. David, Sun-Min, and the Uglydolls family have been featured on the Today Show, The New York Times, and in store windows around the world. The Stupid Blue Postcard - Scam, But Not Quite?
Here is a blue postcard that I received sometime back (click on the image to enlarge it): And it came from this “Awards Verification Center” address: All the big words - “NEW MERCEDES, BMW, PORSCHE or $40,000 CASH” are sure indicators of a scam. But generally stupid scammers, who promise big rewards, choose email as their preferred way of communicating to me that some Nigerian prince wants to give me $10,000,000 for free (I mean, in return for my bank account information). This postcard however, is the first piece of *scam* that I have received through regular email. To find out about who these generous people who want to give me $40,000 cash are, I checked up the address on Better Business Bureau (BBB) and it turned up three entries on Silverleaf Resorts - a timeshare company. Here is what BBB says under “customer experience” for this company: Based on BBB files, this company has a satisfactory record with the Bureau. A satisfactory record means

Serena Williams continued her quest for the French Open title Sunday with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Dinara Safina of Russia. And the Postcard's Going to Read...
So, it's early Tuesday morning (well, 10am but that's damn early considering it's the holidays) and I roll out of bed, hair messed up, eyes half closed and stumble my way into the bathroom. I blindly fumble around for my toothbrush and some toothpaste and start brushing my teeth when - Click.I stop. Is that?..It is..THANK GOD, THE POST IS HERE!And so the toothbrush falls into the sink with a clatter and I'm off leaping down the stairs, half-insane, white foam still in my mouth (Yes toothpaste again, for you dirty minded people). I get to the bottom of the stairs and quickly sort out the mail. Bank statements, confidential mail, charity donations...Come on, where is it?More bank statements, more confidential mail, ooo a catalog - shall have to look at that later. But no postcard.Nothing at all. Not a word. And it's been two weeks since she left already. Surely that's enough time to write and send a postcard? Either she hasn't sent one, or there's been problems with the post.So I

      An old Crewe Alex postcard
Don't ask. I bought this postcard in the mid-90s while walking in the Lake District. Really. There was this tourist shop that had a series about English football on its racks, and there is was - a snap of the back of the old Alex main stand when we used to have a small Astro Turf area where the car park currently stands. Now here's the controversial bit: who is the dark-haired lad in the foreground? I've discussed this with loads of fellow Alex fans and we just can't agree. I reckon it's a picture of a young Mark Rivers, taken a few years before the postcard was published. He's got that slope of shoulder, that swagger and that aura of Rivo. I've no idea who the number 5 is though... What do you reckon?
