      Family Portraits
My parents love to take family portraits. However, every year, the only guy who would put a scowl on his face is the brother, not the youngest brother. The bland face would be my father. Kinda reminds me of this. Never smiling but yet the one who would initiate the photo taking sessions. Are all fathers like that? Do guys really hate to take photos that much? I mean, can’t a nice smiley face do? It’s a family photo for crying out loud. You only get to keep that particular age in that time and year. You don’t get to be 15 or 16 always. Not physically anyway. It’s a heartwarming way to keep such family portraits. You can flip back and look at them fondly, well, for my case. Reminisce about the good ol’ days. The days of yester years. Speaking of which, I have never kept the family portraits! Oh No! Oh and Merry Christmas everyone! © WishBoNe for A Mind of My Own, 2007. | Permalink | 2 comments This work is licensed under a Creative Comm

      Glass Portraits - Victor
It’s not often these days, but when I do have a little bit of time to myself in studio I usually like to experiment with lighting and different ideas that I have. Most often, or so it seems, my victim of choice is my assistant: Victor. Sometimes I think being a photographer is like being an older brother, when I can take my assistant and use him for my experiments… and he can’t really complain about it. Anyhow, before I digress too far away! The point of that day was to bend the rules of the Bokeh effect and see if I could break them. I didn’t quite succeed as technically my subject in the background should have been so blurry it would only be circles… oh, well another day, another experiment! But, it’s not to say I’m unhappy with the results! I posted, the final result in this post but I was going through my archives today and saw the rest of the shoot and thought I’d share a bit more. The box. The box is a metaphor in itself. It doesn’t exist in any tangible sense, but oh, what a metaphor. What a cliché. Open the cliché and BANG. There it is. The past preserved - buried, successfully forgotten about. Hermetically sealed scents and sounds of years ago, an album of feelings locked away because they were so damn heavy. They were so raw, so sore. We look so young. You look so beautiful, so little different I realise now, after all this time spent forgetting. You cover your mouth in nearly every photo, but your eyes are always staring at me. Into me. They stare and do not blink. I look thinner, more stupid maybe. There’s a simpleness to the way I glance at the world that I can’t place, as if I’ve seen none of it before. We really do look so young. I can see something burning behind my eyes. There’s an urgency, like a heartbeat, heavy and furious beneath bones afraid to contain it. Something that isn’t there anymore. It’s in e

My Last Supper: 50 Great Chefs and Their Final Meals / Portraits, Interviews, and Recipes
Annie Leibovitz meets Heat in this award-winning photographer’s stunning celebration of world-famous chefs and their final meals. Chefs have been playing the “My Last Supper” game among themselves for decades, if not centuries, but it had always been kept within the profession until now. Melanie Dunea came up with the ingenious idea to ask fifty of the world’s famous chefs to let her in on this insider’s game and tell her what their final meals would be. My Last Supper showcases their fascinating answers alongside stunning Vanity Fair–style portraits. Their responses are surprising, refreshing, and as distinct from each other as the chefs themselves. The portraits—gorgeous, intimate, and playful—are informed by their answers and reveal the passions and personalities of the most respected names in the business. Lastly, one recipe from each landmark meal is included in the back of the book. With My Last Supper, Dunea found a way into the typically harried, hidden minds

How to Light Portraits in Photography - Part II
This is a part where those of you who cannot afford / do not own a strobe package should pay attention. If you want to include exterior light with a homemade lighting system, you will have a massive disparity between the exterior and interior color temperatures. You’re probably intimately aware of this if you’ve tried to get your interior lighting setups to include exterior light. In a “million-dollar-a-year” studio system, you’d balance to the sun with your already perfectly temp accurate broncolor strobe system and use a specific gel to match the strobe to your metered readings of the ambient light, but usually we don’t have that luxury. So first, let’s talk about mixing source light on the cheap. If you want to mix daylight and your incandescent household light bulb system, you can purchase CTB photofloods for about $3 USD a piece from any online photo store. The downside is that they only last for about three hours at their rated color tem

      Portraits of Prayer
Prayer is a universal human experience. There does not appear to be a culture in the world that does not have some means of prayer, some way of communicating with the Divine. “Somewhere in every man there is the capacity for worship and prayer, for the apprehension of God and the love of him. Praying is a practice like breathing or eating.” ~~ Harry Emerson Fosdick From Pentecostal ministers roaring hallelujahs to the chants of Greek Orthodox choirs, from a widow silently mourning to a child’s closed-eyes request for a wanted toy, from professional athletes pointing to the sky to the Mormon family on fast Sunday: folks are praying all over the world and in many different ways. We pray standing; sitting; kneeling; prostrate on the floor; eyes opened; eyes closed; hands folded or clasped; hands upraised; holding hands with others; a laying on of hands and others. Prayers can be recited from memory, read from a book of prayers, or ad libbed as they are prayed. They may be sp

The Amazing Story of HeadCut Portraits in The Wall Street Journal, No Photographs for Illustrations
Written by Amit Agarwal on Tuesday, November 07, 2006 You have probably seen this pen and ink drawing of Michael Arrington in a recent story about Techcrunch published in The Wall Street Journal. These distinctive dot sketch portraits of celebrities in the WSJ are popularly known as HedCut drawings composed only of tiny ink dots and lines and is unique to the paper. They are drawn by hand [no computers] using just pencils for tracing and ink pens to emulate the look of woodcuts from old-style newspapers, and engravings on certificates and currency.Wall St. Journal editors have had no love for real pictures since they felt that one word was worth a thousand pictures. Most of the pages on the WSJ don't have photographs except for showing advertisements. So their artists gave birth to a new HedCut style of portraits or dot drawings which maintained their "no-picture policy on Page 1" and also preserved the gray appearance of the paper. Now the WSJ has a small in-house art staff for drawing

      Do I Need Bridal Portraits?
While planning for my wedding, I had a lot of pressure to schedule to pose for bridal portraits, and to be honest, I never really saw the need for it. For those of you who don’t know, your bridal portraits are taken prior to the wedding day, typically a month or two before hand. You’ll need to get all dressed up, have your hair and make up done like you will the day of your wedding, and go out the the photoshoot. Most brides do this so that they can post the pictures at the entrance of the reception, or somewhere else. It is a classy idea, and lots of people do it. Beautiful scenery, a bride dressed in white equals some beautiful pictures and memories. Plus they are probably more beautiful than anything that will be taken of you at your actual wedding ceremony. Face it, you may not have the same scenery at your wedding ceremony or reception hall.
