A while ago I mentioned Lazy Investing. The idea is discussed at the Marketwatch article on lazy portfolios. Simply put the concept of lazy investing is to place your investments into a simple mix of mutual funds. For example the Margaritaville portfolio is made up of 33% each of Vanguard Inflation-Protected Securities (VIPSX), Vanguard Total International Stock Index (VGTSX), and Vanguard

Two reasons for this post:1. Many readers of this blog are interested in dividend paying stocks. This may alert those among them who have never heard of Jim Jubak to his income portfolios.2. Some time this month (hopefully soon) I plan to put up a review of Motley Fool's Income Investor newsletter. Jubak's Dividend Portfolio will be a useful comparison.Jim Jubak is senior market's editor at MSN Mo

On May 19, I announced that the Fine Art Photoblog was accepting portfolios to fill two new spots. In just two weeks, we had 43 outstanding portfolios come through: a few familiar names, and many new ones. This was a larger response than I had expected, and I have to admit that I’m wishing there were fewer portfolios to review! So here is one photo from each of the 43 portfolios.

As I have mentioned before extreme early retirement (<35) does not happen due to a prudent investment plan. It happens either by following an extreme savings plan or by being lucky (rich uncle, lottery, penny stocks, real estate, …). These reason is that the time it takes to reach financial independence, around 5 years, is [...]
Some investment time spans leave investors with black and blue investment portfolios causing them to see red. Statements showing a drop in portfolio value weakens the resolve of many investors. Usually, this takes place during uncertainty about sudden or expected long-term economic changes. A Presidential elections arouse uncertainty on Wall Street, and all investors read the results.

In addition to the large changes announced yesterday, Prosper swept a few changes in more quietly. Specifically, they tweaked with their portfolio slices and drastically increased the number of bins used for lender bidding guidance.

Market is giving fund investors a chance to upgrade portfolios

This was a guest post on Prosper's new blog.
When Prosper created their portfolio plans, they added a tool to help new lenders enter the marketplace. It assembles a portfolio of loans whose only objective is to track the average loan return in the specific market slices, much like index funds have done with the stock market. Want to play it conservative, you buy a S&P 500 Index. Feeling
She was the fourth candidate the panel had interviewed today. The traditional opening questions were fired at her: Tell me about yourself? Where are you from, why do you want to work at our school? Could you describe your teaching style for us as well?
Lynn squirmed just a bit and then deftly produced a booklet [...]
There's alot of new online portfolio sites for Designers and Photographers appearing on the internet lately the biggest recently being Behance, I was very impressed with some of the features at Behance but it did take me a while to get used to using some of the features and took me about 3 hours to upload my Logo Design Portfolio there. The new site on the scene is Finalcrit, similar to Behance but much easier to upload to. It had a very fast signup process which was pleasing as far as usability goes.It only took me around an hour to prepare all my logos and upload them, I was very impressed at how you had the ability to change the style of your portfolio with 1 click and the added bonus of a description box and contact box actually on the portfolio meant if you send it to people they wouldn't have to navigate away from the page to get your details. All in all a very good site, check out my Finalcrit Logo Design Portfolio here to see it's capabilities.Subscribe to this feed
Developing Electronic Portfolios with Microsoft PowerPoint Here is the process to create a standards-based electronic portfolio using Microsoft PowerPoint. PowerPoint
Yesterday, one of the stocks I own (Diamond Offshore – DO) had a really pop after it announced its special and regular dividend. This stock has been on fire for the last several months and is mainly the reason why I hung onto the stock for so long. On the contrary, if it was going down, it would be very hard for me to hang on even if I am very convinced that the stock price will go back up.
I look at my portfolio daily, and seeing a red number (meaning a lower stock price) does not help me feel confident about the stock. However, some of these stocks may just be beaten down unjustifiably. For example, for the last several weeks, another stock that I own (Etrade – ETFC) has seen more down days and up. Even though I’m pretty convinced that this stock will go back up, seeing it go down a couple percentages every day will not make me feel better about owning it. What if I sell the stock because the pressure of losing too much money gets to me? If someone tells me that it will
UK Start-up Gizfolio (www.gizfolio.com) launched earlier this year with the goal of helping freelance artists, designers, and all creative professionals to get targeted contract work based on individual skills, experience and a portfolio of work.
Unlike many freelance sites, Gizfolio encourages open offers in favour of bids which is a fairer system that prevents the hard work of creative freelancers from being devalued by bidding wars. Basically, if your portfolio is good, you can use the Gizfolio service to get a steady stream of projects without working for peanuts.
The membership seems to be growing steadily, with a nice mix of both experienced pros and amateurs competing for job listings.
It seems to work pretty well for job listers (’buyers’ as Gizfolio calls them) too, as they can handle all the negotiation and hiring/firing direct from the job listing itself, and both buyers and freelancers can engage in group discussion/negotiation before a freelancer is hired.

I suppose many financial advisors licensed to sell ONLY mutual funds will cringe at this information. First, I want to say that if you have more than $100,000 in your portfolio it does not automatically mean that it is time to get out of mutual funds. But certainly once you pass this threshold you will want to look at alternatives to mutual funds as your options open up (based primarily on the fact that buying in bulk reduces your trading costs). If you remember in my first post on Mutual Funds we defined mutual funds as being the ideal investment for SMALL investors because trying to build your own diversified portfolio would cost too much in trading commissions. So once you have built your portfolio past $100,000 it is time to compare costs of paying a mutual fund manager versus the costs of having a stockbroker build a custom portfolio (or yourself with a discount brokerage trading account if you have the knowledge).Let's look at the average Equity Mutual Fund. It has an
Three of the biggest names in the investing business all have one incredible industry in common. They all have stakes in major oil and gas plays. Argue global warming, environmental protection, and any other claim of criticism, but there is absolutely no doubt that these stocks are headed higher. Just take a look at each of their portfolios.
Among a highly developed and diverse portfolio, Warren Buffett holds companies like Burlington Northern (BNI), Washington Post (WPO), and Coca-Cola (KO). Outside of these foundation stocks is a company that Buffett had to begin disclosing a couple of years of ago, ConocoPhillips (COP). As of the latest portfolio update on Stockpickr.com, Buffett had about 2.1 percent of portfolio vested in the oil and gas industry through COP. It’s clear to see why Buffett has chosen ConocoPhillips, because the company is by far one of the best values in the sector at around 8x price-to-earnings, and has an impressive 2.16 percent dividend yield.

Some states require homeschoolers to keep a portfolio detailing everything they have done during the year. I am lucky enough to live in a state that requires nothing, but I have often thought about keeping a file on hand just in case we ever move and i’m required to show that we are up to speed. It can also be a great keepsake for when you children are grown and out of the home, you’ll having something to look back on.
I found this great hub on Homeschool Portfolios that has a lot of information and advice on keeping track of your child’s homeschooling. Want an added Bonus? Brenda Hoffman, the writer of the hub, is also the author of Homeschooling Without the Headaches.
