Not to brag (too much), but weather.com just informed me it's 79 degrees and sunny (feels like 79 degrees) here on my front porch. Well, they don't have a weather station here on my front porch, and I suppose it's cooler because of the shade and the delightful breeze, but it's a gorgeous day nonetheless.

I insisted my friend pull over for this one. She waited patiently while I walked around taking photos. I couldn't help but think of that book while walking around this house with my camera.
Katherine Phillips, an 85-year-old woman from Mobile, Alabama, tells the story of when she was a young married woman and her husband came home from World War II. They lived in a little neighborhood where all the homes were built for GIs. And every night after they put their children to bed, the Phillips and
A blonde, wanting to earn some money, decided to hire herself out as a handyman-type and started canvassing a wealthy neighborhood. She went to the front door of the first house and asked the owner if he had any jobs for her to do."Well, you can paint my porch. How much will you charge?"The blonde said, "How about 50 dollars?"The man agreed and told her that the paint and ladders that she might need were in the garage. The man's wife, inside the house, heard the conversation and said to her husband, "Does she realize that the porch goes all the way around the house?"The man replied, "She should. She was standing on the porch."A short time later, the blonde came to the door to collect her money."You're finished already?" he asked."Yes," the blonde answered, "and I had paint left over, so I

Question:Richard, I'm a residential home builder & desperate! Is it possible for you to give me the proper name or both proper name and websites I could research the contemporary stoop or porch coverings I have seen in both residential but mostly commercial buildings. Generally made out of glass or acrylic, encased in a metal trim and sometimes hung by chains coming off the structure, mostly used to cover entry doors or doors and part of stoop or porch. . . I've seen them arched, wavy, etc. Help!Answer:Hi Linda - thanks for your question! The glazed porch canopies you've seen are inspired by the Art Nouveau movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and in particular, the famous Art Nouveau glass and steel canopies over the subway entrances in Paris. As far as I know, there's no
I am stealing this idea from my friend Jack Levine over at VeryVitageVegas who post some of the funniest bad photos in the Vegas MLS.
It is the spring market so why not show that porch off?
My only question is, “can we fit anything else out there?”

Rarely do I post what I would call "opinion pieces" (that is not to say my average post is not littered with opinionated statements), though I occasionally read some while trolling through tech and PHP related news and blogs. While doing so recently I came across an article with a title similar to "40 things bad PHP programmers do". As I scanned the list I thought the ideas where all valid, if not a bit over zealously stated in an effort to make the point. This and a recent job interview (in which I did not get the job) got me thinking again about something I have pondered for a long time: How does a programmer balance practical limitations with best practices that can be difficult and time consuming to adhere to?

If you haven't already noticed, today's "Out on the Porch" is about laughter.Did you know there is a word for the science of studying the effects of laughter to the human body, such as the immune system and physical fitness?GelotologyHonestly, the idea may sound a little silly, but it's legitimate. Laughter was put into us to make us stronger, healthier and happier. It is the great medicine that gives life. But, do you want know what the greatest thing about laughter is? It's contagious. Seeing others laugh makes you want to laugh and laughing makes you want to laugh more.H
Larry Towell, The Pear, Lambton County, Ontario, Canada, 1983, Gelatin Silver PrintBy Murray WhiteIn the past 25 years, Larry Towell has slept on the hard concrete floor in a refugee camp in Jenin, crawled through the jungles of El Salvador with rebel forces, been the sole occupant of an abandoned resort complex on the Gaza Strip, and fled tanks during Israeli raids on the occupied West Bank. The image above is none of these. But in the catalogue of work that Towell – a member of the esteemed Magnum photo agency and perhaps our country's most celebrated documentary photographer – has produced, it is no less significant to him. In it, Towell's wife Ann holds a wild pear to the mouth of the couple's son, Moses. It is 1983, though the '51 Ford pickup suggests a different epoch. As, perhap

Around 2:30 a.m. Monday, I woke to a loud scraping noise outside my window. The sound was followed by a loud hissing. I jumped from the bed and peeled back the blinds. Nothing. I almost returned to bed when I heard the sound repeat … only this time louder.
In case you are tuning in for the [...]
Your Monday Photo Shoot: Show us something of interest on your porch. If you don't have a porch, you can substitute front steps, back steps and patios. If you've none of those things, then just find something out the window. If you don't have a window, move.
I hope decorations count because other than two chairs and a table, there is nothing else on my porch.
Here's my photo shoot (2 angles):
Realtors no longer have to stay on their proverbial “local” porch in hopes of generating new business or fostering new business alliances. The explosion of online marketing through blogging has expanded the scope of a Realtor’s business to the point of world wide reach. Simply stated, Realtors now have the opportunity to reach out to a new market with growing buying power, through a weakened dollar, and heightened interest.
One of the newest tools to research property in Europe as well as look for investor interest for U.S. real estate is the United Kingdom search engine Nestoria. Tech Crunch’s Mike Butcher wrote an excellent article “Nestoria to offer average house price data via API” which outlines Nestoria. Nestoria lists properties in England as well as their other market Spain.
The idea for Realtors in the U.S. is to remain active researching the possible European investor wave that may be coming to the US to buy. Tom over at therealestate
I've had a bizarre image in my head for over two years, so maybe writing about it will lessen its hold on me. It started in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina when President Bush toured the Mississippi Gulf Coast (not far from where I grew up). Surveying the damage, he said:
"The good news is that out of this chaos is going to come a fantastic Gulf Coast, like it was before. Out of

I have so many posts that I've started, but not finished, that I can no longer remember what I've actually posted, and what it is I've long forgotten to tell you. Just when I begin to think about it and sit down to open old drafts, I decide that my thinker hurts and I probably have rotting laundry in the machine and that takes priority. (By priority, I mean I have to go get a cup of coffee and
My husband loves to talk, talk, talk. My girlfriends will call to talk to me, and if he answers the phone, well, as I've said before, I may as well grab a good book or go run my grocery errands because there is no prying that phone away from him.
This evening, after he walked in the door, I took to the couch for a short nap. After about 10 minutes, I heard him come in the room and settle onto
A couple of years ago, I started receiving odd phone calls from some woman. We didn't have caller ID at the time. Our conversations would go something like this:
Me: "Hello?"
slight pause
Her: "Hi. Can I speak to Mr. Porch?"
Me: "He's not here. Can I ask whose calling?"
Her, in a sickening sweet voice: "No. I need to speak to him directly."
It was pretty obvious to me that this was some
The future of newspapers in print form is much discussed, but when someone as insightful as Joel Achenbach tackles the issue I take note. Have to love the title: I Really Need You To Read This. I still read the paper but I do it on line. I admit, I do not read the PD regularly; many of my fellow bloggers remind me weekly why I don't by some of their, uh, colorful nicknames for it. But I do read the WS Journal and the Washington Post is my home page. What do you read? Do you agree with Joel?He asks at the end of the article to comment on his blog. You can, that would be great....the POST also allows comments on articles...I find myself doing that often as well....What's wrong with the PD? How can they sit back and look at the POST and the WSJ, and just about any other newspaper from an area with a population larger than 100k and their on-line presence is fabulous...compared to the PD, especially. There are some great Plain Dealer reporters -- I'd read them more regularly if it was on

A porch swing is bound to enhance any deck or patio, but choosing the right type is often tricky. As swings are constructed in a diverse variety of materials finding a resilient swing is a difficult quest. Fortunately, teak porch swings are a popular choice, however, due to their handcrafted appeal and long-lasting characteristics. Since teak is naturally weather resistant, even untreated teak furniture will last under the most severe weather conditions. Thus a teak porch swing suffering under winter snow leaves owners with little cause to worry. A primary appeal of teak porch swings is their durability and sturdiness. Teak porch swings can accommodate people of various sizes and weights. Whether two lovers are enjoying a romantic swing outdoors, or a mother and her children are sharing some time together, a teak porch swing is ideal for all occasions.Teak porch swings are also easy to assemble. The swing can be attached to a tree, porch roof or ceiling and even on a wooden frame. The
In one of the most recent issues of Home Magazine, “The Home Team” has been featured for doing a screen porch project. As they exclaim proudly on their site, “THey’ve done it again and transformed an underutilized and inhospitable screen porch into an attractive arena for social gatherings.
With a tiny caf table and a few potted plants, the 10-by-30-foot space was strictly no frills. Over the course of several days, editor-in-chief Donna Sapolin (center), flanked by stylist Stephen Antonson (left), and deputy articles editor Nicole Sforza, brought the space to life. The trio built a roomy, picnic-style table and matching benches; added a serving console and extra seating; and covered the windows looking into the interior rooms with simple drapery panels. Now, this outdoor oasis is a delightful destination.

Interesting reads today from NRO from three very good writers. The overall impression put forward by the media has been that these latest attacks by terrorists are not really al Qaeda linked because the skillset of the "would bes" lacks a certain proficiency or professionalism; this of course is due to the fact the intended outcome failed. We wouldn't want to discount their abilities obviously by suggesting they cannot succeed again. Yet when they have not had a successful attack, in the U.S. especially the public and media tends to discount that as though there were no threat. When they fail, the failures are looked upon as lacking that 007 aspect, so of course these cannot be real terrorists, al Qaeda or not. While the main thrust of these articles, with the exception of Ledeen's may not be on the subject of "IQ" the reader does get the underlying sense that the terrorists/suicide bombers/martyrs aren't all that quick on the uptake.Michael Ledeen takes the question of "smarts" as

"And by the way," Ah Beng added, "that's not a Porch, it's a Fellali."
Those of you who have been with me for the last two summers know all about our "front porch". We don't HAVE a front porch. We live in a very tall building with NO porches! Our "front porch" is actually a plaza type area below street level that looks up at the sky and buildings, and the church across the street, with shops and small tables and other sitting areas, and a water fountain/wall. It's really a very pleasant place to sit. You do not get the street sounds because of the fountain. It can be sunny or shady, with a nice breeze. People of all kinds come and go. You can sit and eat from one of the restaurants, just have coffee, or just sit. We've lived in this building a very long time. The front porch was not always there, but it's been there for quite awhile. For all the time it has been there, Lou and I did not spend all that much time on it. That's because we were always busy. By the time we got home on weeknights, had dinner, did the dishes, homework, kid
1980 photo of Talpiot Tomb. (Credit: Amos Kloner)I have been working today on my powerpoint presentation for Sunday's adult forum (9:45 a.m. -- join us! If ya can't stop then throw us a kiss!). The topic is the Talpiot Tomb. There are many great resources for the curious. You will want to check out The Discovery Channel website. This is a good one to explore around and get a feel for the issue. Especially helpful is the PDF Document that contains the drawings by the original excavators and their recording of the inscriptions. You will also find on that document Amos Kloner's 1996 article about the tomb and the statistics computed by Andrey Feurgverger regarding this cluster of names. You will find articles by other scholars who question that this is the tomb of Jesus. Then, of course, you will want to go to Simcha Jacobovici's site, The Lost Tomb of Jesus. There is a great deal of speculation there as well, some of it interesting, some of it less so. Nevertheless, it
