Poppy Garden, 6x8, acrylicSOLD Last year I did a series of 15 small poppy paintings. The final 2 have recently sold to a collector in Australia and are en route there right now. So with spring right around the corner and poppies being such a cheerful, fun flower I decided it was time to start a new series. Yesterday I posted Shadows and Poppies, a piece very reminiscent of the French Impressionist style and today something a little more contemporary in feel. The colors in this glow in real life and the rougher weave of this particular canvas really gives the surface a great textural appeal. Enjoy!

BNP Bids To Hijack Poppy Day
Kenny smith Exclusive Fury At Volunteer Bid THE far-right BNP are trying to hijack Scotland's Poppy Appeal to win public support. The racist organisation have asked activists to volunteer to sell the emblems of remembrance for our war heroes. In a secret bulletin to Scots members, the party ask them to take advantage of a shortage of volunteers. The memo states: "We should be at the front of the queue volunteering to do our bit as we understand better than most the patriotic sacrifice made by those serving and ex-service men and women." Last night, furious Poppy Appeal organisers said they were appalled by the BNP's sick bid to win favour. Jim Panton, chief executive of Poppyscotland, said: "I had no idea the BNP have tried to get involved in the Poppy Appeal. "It's outrageous for any organisation or group to try to hijack the poppy for their own benefit or gain. "It is a misuse and misrepresentation of the sentiment of the appeal and we would ta

Gardening For Beginners - Weird Poppy Flowers
People tell me how easy poppies are to grow. I saw a smattering of them in the neighbors vegetable garden last week. What! I exclaimed, are those poppies? Oh yes, she said, I tossed some seeds in there that were stuck in a corner of the bag of seeds I planted out front. And there they were. Nice little poppies.Let me tell you my poppy story. Last year, I got some poppies late in their season from a woman up the street who had a big clump of them. I transplanted them into my garden and they more or less took. This year, they came up and were about 3 or 4 inches high when I had a garden crew come in to dig up a couple of new beds for me. They did a magnificent job on the beds. Then they asked if I wanted them to edge the other beds. Well, yes, that would be great. Just edge around the half-circle one and the one along where the fence used to be (that's another story). They edged and as a bonus yanked out a few weeds which was great. Except they yanked out my poppies. I was kind of surpri

Crewe and Nantwich Mayor Maurice Jones is asking everyone to get behind the appeal. I had a spell in the Royal Navy back in the mid-80s, but was lucky enough to leave intact and without the need for any support. The Poppy Appeal gives the British Legion the chance to offer advice, emotional and financial assistance to people who have served in the forces. It's easy to show your support and respect, should you want to. Crewe will soon be ablaze with colour. Buy one of those red flowers...

      California Poppy
#0634 California Poppy Larger Image. This was from a photo taken on the Muir Beach walk last week. A tiny delicate little thing, smaller than it it appears here, with deep colouration. I was told it was the State flower… and Wikipedia agrees: The California poppy is the California state flower. It was selected as the state flower by the California State Floral Society in December 1890, winning out over the Mariposa lily (genus Calochortus) and the Matilija poppy (Romneya coulteri) by a landslide, but the state legislature did not make the selection official until 1903. Its golden blooms were deemed a fitting symbol for the Golden State. April 6 of each year is designated “California Poppy Day.”

      When I Collect Poppy Seeds
I've finished collecting the last of the poppy seed heads in my garden this weekend and I thought I'd make a post to show the visual clues of when I know it is time to collect poppy seeds for those that don't know when to collect them. The two visual clues that I've picked up growing these plants is to first look for the color change. The seed pods on these poppies go from green to a purplish-brown color when the seed heads have dried. The second visual clue I've noticed is that the pods start to open right below crown in the area where I've highlighted with the arrow. Sometimes though the openings will occur before the pods have changed color and vice versa so I make daily checks on the seed pods so that none will escape my attention.By the time the seeds are ready to collect the stalks and leaves have turned yellow and I just pull them up and snip off the seed heads into a paper bag and allow them to completely dry out before emptying out the

They have already announced a party next week, our neighbour at the farm has got a new verandah. Every reason is a good reason ;-) Skärsviken’s beach at Fårö island. Tried to lay on the beach this morning. It was sun when we got there, butt as soon as we have laid down there was dark clouds arriving and fog (first time for me to see that here!) surrounding us from all directions. My bad weather curse that did strike a bit I think ;-) Butt it’s still very beautiful and peaceful. We did get a lot of rain last night. That’s when you’re so glad that you’re not sleeping in a tent… Tor, it might be a more wise decision than we thought to bring the canoe

      178. a call from poppy
my dad called last night. poppy said, hey babes, got a moment?i thought, uh-oh, solitaire isn’t working on the pc again. i said, yeah pops, what’s up?he said, hey babes i hate to bother you but the tv picture doesn’t work. it’s just snow.we discussed which remotes he used on which components of his complicated cable hdtv setup. it was fruitless, and i missed the daily show to boot. so he had to settle for a night of watching the bedroom tv until professional help could arrive.the next morning he called to tell me he fixed it. he reconnected the cable that he had disconnected in order to move stuff around to vacuum.then i thought how silly of me not to ask that question. so i added that and power outage to my help desk script for his next call.

Someone I'd Like You to Meet: Meredith from Poppy Fields
If I were to win a plane ticket to go anywhere in the world you can bet I'd end up on this woman's doorstep. Meredith, our guest judge for this month's Write-Away Contest, is a blogger with international flair living in the south of France with her husband and two daughters, Emma and Nina. Her blog is Poppy Fields and evokes thoughts of Monet and Degas, olive groves and grape vines, lovely meals and afternoon naps. Ever since my years of classroom French and picking my way through Gide and Camus I've wanted to visit her country but a conversation with Meredith is the next best thing to two weeks in Provence. The first question I asked was how a girl from America's midwest and named after Tom Brokaw's wife came to marry a French man and settle in Europe? She met her husband on a blind date while they were both working in Hawaii--the big island to be specific--she as a medical technologist and he as an engineer for a French-Canadian-Hawaiian telescope. When her husband--then h

      “Golden Poppy”
Not sure if this one has even been posted or not. It is one that sat in my files for 3 years, never really giving me that much inspiration of any kind, but yet I kept it. One art buyer that I am working with is very happy that I did. Still, … it does not make me jump up and down! : ) This was created by taking the poppy from outside and bringing it indoors. Available light was coming from a window, and a reflector was used on the opposite side of the flower. I honestly can’t remember what I used for a background. Camera was on a tripod and using the Canon 100mm macro and extension tube. I simply rotated the flower by hand while looking through the viewfinder, trying to find a composition that worked. I wanted to get at least some detail in the top portion of the stem, maybe a touch of detail within the petal area, and then simply let the rest to fall where it may. A ever so slight hint of curves was used to darken the background just a bit more. © 2004 - Michael Brown *

Poppy seeds (Khuskhus) for beauty and health
Khuskhus (poppy seeds) is one of the spices used in Indian cuisine. Here’s how you could use it as a beauty aid and as a home-remedy for common ailments. Poppy seeds (Khus Khus) for beauty Khas-khas seeds lend an almost fragile transparency to the skin. Because they are so tiny, it is bit of a problem to grind them to a paste. Put some seeds into a spice-hand grinder, which is usually used in

A Soldier's Poppy Day Push Off At Harrods [Updated!]
Harrods bans soldiers on Poppy Day A serving Army officer was banned from entering Harrods on Remembrance Day in case his uniform upset other shoppers. Lieutenant Daniel Lenherr had just taken part in a parade honouring Britain’s war dead when the London department store turned him away at the door. The security guard told him other customers might be intimidated by the uniform. Upset whom??? A bunch of snivelling whiny liberal sheep? I have one thing to say to them, …. sod you, you ingrates, sod you! Remembrance Day (Poppy Day) Remembrance Day is observed throughout Britain in commemoration of the million or more British soldiers, sailors and airmen who lost their lives during the two World Wars. On that day special services are held in the churches and wreaths are laid at war memorials throughout the country and at London’s Cenotaph, where a great number of people gather to observe the two-minute silence and to perform the annual Remembrance Day ceremony. November...Is Poppy Month.
Flight plans for the next few hours are cancelled. News is that there is heavy fighting happening and that the casualties are high. We wait for the sound of the ambulances and watch as they line up on the parking apron and set up to receive the injured, the maimed, the mangled and the dying. The low drone of a turboprop alerts us to the incoming air traffic...The first of four AN-32 Troop carriers / cargo planes touches down and booms as the plane goes into reverse thrust to shorten its landing roll...Time is of the essence to some of troops who are on that plane...Even before the plane reaches the apron the rear cargo door is hydraulically actuated, opening slowly to reveal its "load". marshals don't bother telling the medics to wait for the engines to stop to get close to the aircraft, its a scene of calculated confusion...Medics, officers, troops, stretchers, saline, and ammunition. The receding whine indicates that the engines have finally been shut down and the refueling trucks,
