Remember all the groans & whines we came up with when we were forced to eat Karela/Bitter Melons when we were little? I have heard only of a handful of kids who eat this bitter vegetable without pulling a long sad face. I have found some ways (like this one), where the karela actually tastes not [...]
Here is my entry for the UK Stampers Sunday Challenge. The theme was linked to Remembrance Sunday and the image had to be of a poppy. Here is mine. The poppy was stamped after selectively colouring the flower and the leaves with watercolour brush markers. This was stamped on plain white card and then waterbrushed to produce a watercoloured finish. The image was then carefully cut out. The stamp use

I have always had a difficult relationship with November 11th.I was raised a pacifist in a Mennonite church. Sunday School stressed turning the other cheek and loving your enemies. My great uncles who ran away to fight in World War II were our family's black sheep. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was held up as a hero of pacificism. These were the things that rattled around in my brain every year wh
This Sunday is remembrance Sunday, and now more than ever I think it's important to remember the people that died defending our rights and freedoms and those of others who they'd never even met. There are people who would use defending us as a reason to gradually erode our civil liberties and impose restrictions on our personal freedoms in the name of protection. I wear a Poppy to remember that per

There's nothing like a slice of delicious Coconut Cake to begin your day! But this is no ordinary cake; its a coffee cake flavored with sour cream, shredded coconut, poppy seeds and vanilla baked into a soft and scrumptious cake that is great to be eaten by itself or served with something else. But beware of the poppy seeds, they are like opium - too much and it could get you to sleep instantly!..

I like quickbreads, as you can probably tell, and that probably means that I'm lazy. In my defense, I usually make stuff depending on what I'm trying to use up in my fridge or pantry. This time, I wanted to use up milk and oranges. Oh, and then I only had a teeny bit of almond extract left so that's what I put in. The result is a wonderful breakfast bread, light and perfect with coffee.Glazed Popp

Poppy Medley, 30x20, acrylicJan BlencoweAs many of you know I've painted poppies before. It all started when I decided to do a copy of one of Monet's most famous poppy field painting in miniature. Poppy Montgomery in Stuff, May 2005 7 pics | 1150 x 1500 (HQ) | 1.9 MB Poppy Montgomery has found success and prominence by playing the dramatic role of FBI agent Samantha Spade in the popular TV series Without a Trace (2002). Her gorgeous image can often be found in many men's magazines.Montgomery was born with the name Poppy Petal Donahue. She was raised in her native Sydney, Australia. Since the age of 12, Poppy had a near obsession with cultural icon Marilyn Monroe. Her parents had named each of their five daughters after a flower and, after a time, the name Poppy Petal attracted so much derision from fellow students that she left school at the age of 14. At 16, she left home to travel abroad and, at 18, she traveled to America. In Los Angeles, penniless and with a copy of How t

It is now full season for California Poppy viewing. The season should last until at mid-May, with the flowers peaking over the next week or so. Most of the poppies are blooming on the south sides of the hills, but the north slopes have more of a variety of flowers such as owl's clover, forget-me-nots, wild onion, silver puffs, and red maids among poppies and goldfields. Poppy Garden, 6x8, acrylicSOLD Last year I did a series of 15 small poppy paintings. The final 2 have recently sold to a collector in Australia and are en route there right now. So with spring right around the corner and poppies being such a cheerful, fun flower I decided it was time to start a new series. Yesterday I posted Shadows and Poppies, a piece very reminiscent of the French Impressionist style and today something a little more contemporary in feel. The colors in this glow in real life and the rougher weave of this particular canvas really gives the surface a great textural appeal. Enjoy!

The poppy is a red flower with a thick seed pods that carry the popular poppy seeds used in cooking. Although there's been a great deal of misinformation about the ability of poppy seeds to create false positives in drug testing, more modern testing does not confuse culinary poppy seed ingestion for drug use, and you shouldn't refrain from eating or using poppy seeds in cooking because of it. Kenny smith Exclusive Fury At Volunteer Bid THE far-right BNP are trying to hijack Scotland's Poppy Appeal to win public support. The racist organisation have asked activists to volunteer to sell the emblems of remembrance for our war heroes. In a secret bulletin to Scots members, the party ask them to take advantage of a shortage of volunteers. The memo states: "We should be at the front of the queue volunteering to do our bit as we understand better than most the patriotic sacrifice made by those serving and ex-service men and women." Last night, furious Poppy Appeal organisers said they were appalled by the BNP's sick bid to win favour. Jim Panton, chief executive of Poppyscotland, said: "I had no idea the BNP have tried to get involved in the Poppy Appeal. "It's outrageous for any organisation or group to try to hijack the poppy for their own benefit or gain. "It is a misuse and misrepresentation of the sentiment of the appeal and we would ta

Crewe and Nantwich Mayor Maurice Jones is asking everyone to get behind the appeal. I had a spell in the Royal Navy back in the mid-80s, but was lucky enough to leave intact and without the need for any support. The Poppy Appeal gives the British Legion the chance to offer advice, emotional and financial assistance to people who have served in the forces. It's easy to show your support and respect, should you want to. Crewe will soon be ablaze with colour. Buy one of those red flowers...

Poppy Petal Emma Elizabeth Deveraux Donahue (born 19 June 1972 in Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian actress. Her brother is named Jethro Tull, after Jethro Tull. Her sisters are named Rosie Thorn, Daisy Yellow, Lily Belle and Marigold Sun - all named after flowers, as Poppy is. She has stated the reason for her siblings interesting names was that her parents "were big hippies."She chose her mother's maiden name, Montgomery, as her stage name. She left Australia at 16 to be with her then-boyfriend. They broke up, and she arrived in Hollywood at 18 carrying a copy of How to Make It In Hollywood. She currently stars as Samantha Spade in the American television series Without a Trace. Montgomery was the "cover girl" for the May 2005 Stuff, which labelled her "TV's Hottest Cop." She has also appeared in Maxim, FHM and posed nude in the art magazine Black+White. There is a reason why my dad likes calling me a rabbit, I love vegetables and I especially love delicious green salads. One of my favorite combinations consists of lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, candied walnuts, craisins, corn, feta cheese and homemade poppy seed salad dressing. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. You absolutely have to try this dressing, I guarantee you are likely to fall in love with it. In fact, often times when I am asked to bring a salad to a party, they always request I bring this dressing along.

#0634 California Poppy Larger Image.
This was from a photo taken on the Muir Beach walk last week. A tiny delicate little thing, smaller than it it appears here, with deep colouration. I was told it was the State flower… and Wikipedia agrees:
The California poppy is the California state flower. It was selected as the state flower by the California State Floral Society in December 1890, winning out over the Mariposa lily (genus Calochortus) and the Matilija poppy (Romneya coulteri) by a landslide, but the state legislature did not make the selection official until 1903. Its golden blooms were deemed a fitting symbol for the Golden State. April 6 of each year is designated “California Poppy Day.”

I've finished collecting the last of the poppy seed heads in my garden this weekend and I thought I'd make a post to show the visual clues of when I know it is time to collect poppy seeds for those that don't know when to collect them. The two visual clues that I've picked up growing these plants is to first look for the color change. The seed pods on these poppies go from green to a purplish-brown color when the seed heads have dried. The second visual clue I've noticed is that the pods start to open right below crown in the area where I've highlighted with the arrow. Sometimes though the openings will occur before the pods have changed color and vice versa so I make daily checks on the seed pods so that none will escape my attention.By the time the seeds are ready to collect the stalks and leaves have turned yellow and I just pull them up and snip off the seed heads into a paper bag and allow them to completely dry out before emptying out the
