      Fighting global warming with pollution
The journal Nature published the findings of a group of scientists consisting of Dr Peter Doran and his colleagues at the University of Illinois, the researchers took temperature readings and found temperatures in the Antarctic have been getting slightly colder for the last 30 years and guess why….. Air pollution. An atmospheric scientist professor Don Collins from NASA proposed after years of study that limited amount of aerosol pollutants in the air could partially counteract global warming, "As the atmosphere becomes more polluted by man's activities, more sunlight may be reflected back into space, leading to a cooling effect on Earth's climate, Although this cooling won't be enough to offset global warming over the entire Earth, it will compete with warming effects on a small scal

Studies link pervasive 'obesogens' to weight gain in frogs, mice In the United States, the percentage of adults who are obese — defined by the National Institutes of Health as a body-mass index exceeding 30 — has doubled since 1990, climbing from 12 percent to a whopping 24 percent in 2005, closely tracking Oregon figures, according to the Oregon Health Division. For the most part, the blame for the obesity epidemic has fallen on diet and exercise, with particular emphasis on familiar evils such as the proliferation of junk food, the advent of the remote control, trans fat, ever-longer commutes and even the disappearance of physical education in schools. But now some researchers have identified a new suspect: pollution. Attributing obesity to diet and exercise is "practica

"The witnesses for the prosecution cannot be certain that (the alleged environmental damage) was caused by tailings from Newmont," Ketut Manika, the leading judge in the case, told the court. Manika said prosecution witnesses had cited murkiness of the water in a bay, declining numbers of fish and fewer species of marine life as evidence of environmental wrongdoing. Witnesses for the defense, however, had testified that fish numbers hadn't declined, nor had the variety of species diminished, and said that murkiness in the water could be the result of overflow into the bay of dirty water from flooding inland.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com

It not only reduces waste and preserves the local environment, but also enables others to make use of old but still viable electronics. It all seems like the perfect eco-friendly thing to do, except for one tiny problem. As much as 80 per cent of U.S. electronic waste (or “e-waste”) makes its way to developing nations like India, China and Nigeria where workers - many of them without protective gear - proceed to disassemble the equipment to extract metals and gases, thus exposing themselves and the local environment to unspoken hazards. Most of this electronic waste is collected during free recycling drives periodically conducted by companies and schools that are more prone to the accumulation of equipment. This article explains how Hitachi is focusing on a hard drive technology that will allow them to store and read data in areas 2,000 times smaller than the width of a single strand of hair. This "new" technology is really a spin on an old version of hard drive tech that was abandoned due to size limitations. But the replacement has limitations of its own, which, when reached, will force major data storage companies back to the "new" take on an "old" technology.Giant Magnetoresistance, or GMR, uses a disc that spins with an arm over it, like a record player. At the tip of the arm is an electromagnetic head which reads magnetic variations on the surface of the disc. GMR hit a ceiling a few years ago and new technology was the alternative. Now Hitachi has developed a way to use GMR at an incredibly small scale, which will change the way we talk about our iPods.Today it's all about the Gigs - Gigabytes. Light Pollution
Today on a cloudless night in NYC an amateur astronomer can see far less of the nightime sky than Galileo could see when he first began studying the stars. The reason is light pollution. Light pollution is measured on the Bortle Dark Sky Scale, and Galileo's night sky would have been classified as a 1 or the darkest on the scale while the sky above New York is currently considered a brightly lit, 9. In fact in the US there are no longer any class 1 locations and even class 2 areas are under seige from the omnipresent glow of outdoor lighting, a threat that grows increasingly more powerful each year. In 1988 a non-profit group called the International Dark Sky Association began trying to do something about light pollution. The group's efforts include targeting poorly designed and bad light fixtures, reducing the wattage of individual outdoor lights and working to diminish the overall level of nighttime lighting. Light pollution comes in many forms, but one glaring offender is the unt

They estimate 3%-5% of nitrogen in fertilizer is converted and emitted rather than previously thought 2%. Professor Keith Smith of the University of Edinburgh commented: “One wants rational decisions rather than simply jumping on the bandwagon because superficially something appears to reduce emissions.”There is also the factor as corn is turned into fuel prices rise causing poor people to suffer. The Caspian is the world`s most easily accessible major oil region yet to be fully developed. Both Western nations and former Soviet republics are rushing to exploit its vast hydrocarbon wealth. Environmental issues are increasingly moving to the forefront of this exploitation. While nations bordering the Caspian piously insist that environmental worries top their list of concerns, cynics maintain that environmental issues are a facade for the nations to rewrite what they have come to regard as increasingly exploitative production-sharing agreements signed in the heady days following the implosion of the Soviet empire. The truth is probably somewhere in between. The Caspian is the world`s largest enclosed body of water, with a surface area of 143,244 square miles. Its pollution comes from three sources: inflowing rivers bringing contaminants from their watershed area, offshore oil production platforms and the rising Caspian tanker trade. As for riverine pollutants, the bulk comes from

The Airports of Thailand (AoT) which manages Bangkok's new international airport plans to hold talks with representatives of local residents currently living in the neighborhood of Suvarnabhumi airport who are being seriously affected by air traffic-related noise pollution.AoT spokesman Chirmsak Pinthong said the state firm will negotiate with several representatives of residents around Suvarnabhumi airport by the end of this month so that compensation can be offered. The AoT may respond to the damage caused by noise pollution either by buying the victims' houses or paying for home repairs, he said.Only those who have lived in the area prior to 2001 will be considered for planned compensation, which is yet to be approved by the cabinet. If approved, all compensation would be provided next month.Airlines and passengers may be charged an extra fee for causing noise pollution, as was done in Japan and Australia, he said, adding that the AoT is considering collecting the special fee to co

      China: King of pollution
The side effect of the last year's rapid economic growth of China is the high pollution level of this country. Factories and cars are the two most important causes of pollution. Pollution there is touching almost every aspect of the environment over there: air pollution, water pollution and land pollution. It is easy to see how polluted the country can be on this picture. Just compare the two pictures taken on the same spot and you'll see the difference. The first one has been taken on a rainy day and the other on a sunny day. Can you see the difference? Here are two links that you should check. The first outline the pollution level in China (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environment_of_China) and the second one outline the fact that the polluting agent of China has been found in the U.S (www.cbsnews.com/stories/2000/03/31/archive/main178697.shtml).

      MAN AND POLLUTION
41- Corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of people have earned, He thus lets them taste the consequences of their works that they may return.30-The Romans, 41Man has been paying the cost of damages he has inflicted on his surroundings and nature throughout centuries. Passion for more money, sloth and irresponsibility have made man blind to the fact that he is part of his natural environment and that the damage he causes it will unavoidably affect him. The development of environmental consciousness in man, who has suffered from damages of his own doing, is a recent event. Environmental awareness only received special emphasis in the world after 1970.In a century and place where environmental awareness cannot be said to have existed, the reference made in the Quran to this fact, that is to the corruption caused in the land and the sea on account of that which men’s hands have wrought, is a lesson of great scope. Africa Taking Their Pollution Problems Seriously
While Africa has not been known to have a serious problem with pollution, they are taking advanced steps and preventive maintenance measures to avoid falling into the same trap that has plagued countries such as China. The indicators are there for Africa and while it is still early, groups and organizations concerned with the said pollution problem are underlying the necessary steps to avoid this problem from getting out of hand. “The economic consequences of air pollution (e.g. increased expenses of health services, damaged ecosystems that sustain the economy and reduced productivity from workers with pollution-related illnesses) makes it clear that it is cost-effective to timely redress the air pollution problems,” said a University of Zimbabwe environmental researcher. Bhutanese Industries and Environmental pollution!
August 5, 2007 - Thimphu: Pray for more industries and pollution elsewhere. Bhutan may reap the benefits of global warming in hard cash. If qualified as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project, Punatsangchu-1 and the upcoming Dagachu projects could earn Bhutan Nu 24 billion a year from carbon trade. In simple terms, carbon trade is turning the harmful greenhouse gases into commodities like gold, salt or chilies that can be traded in the market. CDM is a program under the Kyoto Protocol, the U.N.-brokered agreement that set limits for carbon and other harmful emissions by companies in industrialized nations. Under the treaty, nations that emit less than their quota of greenhouse gases will be able to sell carbon credits to polluting nations. The mechanism is created to help finance environmentally sustainable development projects in the developing countries as well as to allow the developed countries to partly fulfill their commitment on the reduction of carbon emissions. Ontario has launched a second official complaint with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, saying rule changes for American coal-fired power plants will spew even more harmful pollution across the border. The province filed comments Tuesday arguing the U.S. plans will only relax the rules, allowing out-dated plants to operate longer hours without installing modern pollution controls. “Air pollution from the U.S. coal-fired power plants continues to harm the health, environment and economy of Ontario,” said Environment Minister Laurel Broten.

We thought the once-a-year air pollution from Indonesia open burning was bad in Kuala Lumpur. We complaint of health problems (specifically respiratory related) during this time of the year, every year, due to the haze issue. On Monday, standing in front of the Beijing office’s windows, I looked out… I couldn’t see anything beyond 500m. I only saw haze. It is summer now and the weather is hot. It is definitely not fog. Indeed, the haze is so bad that, arriving less than 5 hours, I am already suffering all the symptoms described for haze hazardous level. Seriously, back home in Malaysia, I’m sure this level would be classified as DANGEROUS. But here, people don’t care, even after I mentioned. I guess they are numbed already. Nobody seems to even notice. Nobody seems to care that they don’t get to see the blue skies… So sad. P/s: Someone told me just now, apparently this is not the worst. Of the world population of about 6.5 billion, 57 percent is malnourished, compared with 20 percent of a world population of 2.5 billion in 1950, said Pimentel. Malnutrition is not only the direct cause of 6 million children's deaths each year but also makes millions of people much more susceptible to such killers as acute respiratory infections, malaria and a host of other life-threatening diseases, according to the research.

The law also sets for a recommendation of a maximum speed of 90 km/h (55 mph) in the so-called “second road ring” of the city metropolitan area. In order to implement this law, all the administrations (national, regional and local) will have to change the road signs as well as tune the speed cameras and radars next fall. This measure resembles the strict 55-mph limits that the US implemented after the 1973 Oil Crisis, but the focus of this bill is more centered in clean air than in savings. Technically, it is not man directly but the innocent bystanders who are simply trying to live normal lives but are falling prey towards the toxic wastes and pollution that has become evident today. The problem is, practically all the natural resources we have today have become something to be worried about. Air, water and the natural environmental resources have become dangerous to some extent, needing caution at all times for people to be assured of good lives to live. Machineries that are man-made are usually the prime suspects but if man would not take the initiative in making all of these technology and inventions, man him will not grow. Perhaps this is the price to pay for leading demanding lives. People just find themselves asking for more to live comfortably but at the same time dangerously. Since when is science and research ran by consensus or committee? Liberals love committee decisions and consensus for a number of reasons. Chielf amongst them is 1) they have no faith in the individual and 2) a committee decision relieves the individual of personal responsibility for any dumb ass decisions made. And as we all know personal responsibility is anathema to libs. Their standard MO would be to make personal ad hominem attacks against the scientist in question rather than fodcus on the facts rationally. Light pollution - small fry for greens
Light pollution is generally seen as a conservation issue. Mainstream environmentalists are now concerned with threats to the human habitat rather than preservation of natural beauty, and findings published today by the British Astronomical Society are unlikely cause more than a ripple. The research showed that fewer than half of us can see 10 stars in Orion (on a clear night you should be able to see 50). The green lobby pipes up from time to time about light pollution. Southampton City Council’s plans for a ‘Laser Gateway’, four high power lasers on the Clock Tower designed to brand the port, for example, were of course criticised by the local Campaign for Rural England and Friends of the Earth. But with greenhouse gas emissions on the agenda, most activists have bigger fish to fry. There is an interesting trend here. Richard Foster on Mind Pollution
Check out this amazing quote from an amazing writer: This is why the problem of mind pollution is so critical. Now when I speak of mind pollution, I am not only thinking of "bad" books, movies, and so forth, but of the mediocre ones as well. You see, unless we set before ourselves an "habitual vision of greatness", we will surely degenerate. This is why it is ruinous that so much of our Christian literature is of such poor literary quality. The sad fact of the modern world is that, in the main, men do not read at all, and many women are captives to the escape romance novel, which is of such poor quality that it should not even be considered literature. We simply must raise our sights. - From Richard J. Foster's Study Guide for Celebration of Discipline While Foster's quote about romance novels may sound a tad harsh, men aren't off the hook either.
