      Polluting ISP advertising tracking
With ISP profiling for advertising companies, as well as other ways that the ISP’s can work out a profile of who you are, there are some likely ways that you can pollute the results just to make some poor advertising executives day, and your ISP’s day just a tad bit more annoying. This is akin [...]

Global Warming Worries Wealthy, Polluting Nations Least
LiveScience.com - The wealthier a country is and the more greenhouse gases it spews into the atmosphere, the less worried its citizens are about the effects of global warming. Residents of the low-lying Netherlands, ironically, are the least worried of all. The findings are the result of a study that started when Hanno Sandvik, a biology postdoctoral researcher at the Norwegian University of Scie

Shaming institutional investors cannot increase the cost of capital for polluting companies
Banks are favourite targets for campaigners of all types, so it was no surprise to see the Rainforest Action Network launch a campaign to shame Citi and Bank of America for their investments in the coal industry. Here in the UK, RBS in particular gets slated for investments in aviation, oil and gas and other high-emissions industries. (more…)

      A noise polluting iPod?
iPod noise pollution irks those nearby. Who knew? I thought the buds privatised the sound. If an iPodder is pissing you off, how loud must it be? And what is it doing to the guy’s ear drums? But live and learn. I’ve been wondering at the lack of wildlife ever since I’ve been iPodding my way through the Yukon bush. Now I know. Still, Amped to its highest volume, the iPod is not nearly as invasive the classic loud cell phone conversation. But it can have its moments. Like when you’re standing in an elevator at 9 a.m. and a co-worker cranks up Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab.” (Too early for that song.) Or when an ear-budded subway rider belts what sounds like a Whitney Houston tune with careless abandon, causing other riders to inch away or flee into another car altogether. (True story.) “I’ve heard that problem quite a lot, people singing along,” said Leander Kahney, managing editor of Wired magazine’s Web site. “And, of co

Political intervention - not ethical investment - is the way to penalise polluting companies
There are an increasing range of options on offer to the green capitalist. Trucost, a research agency, published a report last week ranking funds by the carbon footprint of their assets. The purpose of the ranking is to guide to eco-conscious investors. ‘SRI’ (Socially Responsible Investment) funds generally did better than those with other strategies – as you would expect – and, reflecting increased public awareness over the past year, retail sales for SRI funds in the first quarter of 2007 were three times sales in the first quarter of 2006. A quick look at some of the funds’ assets shows that those leading Trucost’s table are weighted toward financial services and have relatively small holdings in the dirtier industries, such as utilities, that are preferred by funds further down the list. One of F&C’s mid-cap growth funds, for example, has no environmental element to its strategy and, simply because it favours service sectors, is five places above F&C’s high

      Petroleum Products Polluting the Planet
We all need petroleum products to help in the machinery we operate in. We need them in most consumer products we use, not to mention the various transportation vehicles we bank on when we want to travel from one place to another. However, what we tend to overlook is the pollution effects that these petroleum products have whenever we use them. Perhaps it is high time we get a better overview of these petroleum products and become familiar with what they can do to our environment. Blog Whores and Pimps are Polluting the Blogosphere
I’ve been blogging for a little over three months, and after experimenting with my posts, reading other blogs, and talking to fellow bloggers, I’ve come to realize that the blogosphere is polluted with “Blog Whores and Pimps”: Bloggers who use their gamed rankings to artificially increase their PageRank, and with the resulting traffic, make money by pimping their blog’s popularity to anyone who’ll pay them. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against anyone creating a successful blog and monetizing its success; I encourage it — live the dream man! But please do it with real honest content, not stuff you create with the sole purpose of generating traffic and making money. My problem lies with the newbies that StumbleUpon some guy who makes $1,000+ a day from his blog and decide to try to do the same thing. (more…) big guy, blog, blogosphere, blog whores, google adsense, increase traffic, newbie, pagerank, pimping, quality content,

Polluting London taxi adds to air woes
I have just browsed the online edition of the TC. I read the articles on the throne speech and then the article about a 1970s London taxi, complete with “purring” four-cylinder diesel engine (that would be a first), being brought to Victoria. Do we really need any more filthy, archaic vehicles in town? We already have a host of old buses and coaches to fill the air with noxious fumes. I love the idea of having period vehicles, but why can’t they be upgraded to be cleaner? If they can’t, then I say it’s not worth it.
