Sen. Mark Obenshain announced on Monday he will not seek the AG’s office. Del. Rob Bell has also decided to forgo a run. Corey Stewart was not included in the poll because he is unlikely to seek the office.
With Fabio Capello reportedly set to take over the England manager job vacated by Steve McClaren, now is as good a time as any to close two concurrent polls Soccer Source has been running for the past fortnight. The polls asked readers to predict where England will finish in their qualifying group for the 2010 World Cup and inquired if the Three Lions "will win a World Cup or European Championship in your lifetime?"I originally intended the mini survey to gauge England fans' moods after their team's historic collapse against Croatia. But it soon occurred to me that this method was flawed on several levels: there was no way to limit participation to England fans and the "your lifetime" bit was by definition subjective--and potentially self-fulfilling, if particularly distraught fans decided to take their lives into their own hands in the near future (a very real concern, judging by what was portrayed in the country's media. Talk about self-fulfilling. How can you not contemplate suic
Major League Soccer is due to announce the winners of its last two player awards, the Most Valuable Player and MLS Newcomer of the Year, later this week. As might be expected from a blog that is in large part (though by no means exclusively!) focused on the New York Red Bulls, Juan Pablo Angel leads the Soccer Source run-off by a wide margin. But there is still time to vote so cast your ballot now!Competing with Angel are other nominees Cuauhtemoc Blanco of the Chicago Fire and Luciano Emilio of D.C. United. In the MVP tally, Angel has 46 votes, or 56%, with Blanco and Emilio deadlocked at 16 (19%) and 15 (18%), respectively. The remaining 4% (four votes) went to an option (David Beckham) that was added partly in jest and partly as a preemptive measure to avoid having to read idiotic emails that asked why he wasn't nominated. In the Newcomer of the Year category, Angel has 36 votes (57%), Emilio 12 (19%), Beckham 8 (12%) and Blanco 7 (11%). There too, Beckham was not on the real MLS ba
Major League Soccer is due to announce the Defender and Comeback Player of the Year award winners today. Soccer Source has been holding its own reader poll on these and other (indeed, all) individual player awards. We even include one for the best referee, a topic readers unequivocally could care less about; 94% of votes in that category went to "who cares? They all suck" instead of to one of the refs who were nominated. But on to the awards readers might actually care about: New England's Michael Parkhurst is leading the Defender of the Year category with 62% of votes, followed by Chivas' Claudio Suarez (25%) and Houston's Eddie Robinson (12%). In the Comeback Player of the Year category, Colombus' Frankie Hejduk and Kansas City's Eddie Johnson are neck-and-neck with New England's Pat Noonan a more distant third, but still within striking distance. A little over four hours remain until polls close.Coach of the Year and Rookie of the Year will be announced Wednesday, with Soccer S
With the Red Bulls season now officially over, I will turn attention back to the Least Valuable Player poll this site has been running. There is obviously no need to extend the vote, so I will close it Monday morning, Nov. 5. That leaves a little over 24 hours to vote if you haven't done so already. As discussed, the LVP is up to each voter to define him- or herself. You are encouraged to do so by commenting on this post.Last time we glanced at the vote tally, Claudio Reyna was leading by a wide margin. That remains the case, with Captain America receiving 79 votes in his (mis)favor, amounting to nearly one third of all votes cast (according to my calculations, which are probably wrong so you may want to do the math yourself). Markus Schopp is a distant second with 36 votes, followed by Chris Leitch (28) and Kevin Goldwaith (27). In other words, Reyna, who has more than twice the votes of his nearest contestant, appears a shoe-in. But there's still time! So please vote if you haven'
Oft-injured midfielder Claudio Reyna is leading the inaugural Soccer-Source poll for New York Red Bulls Least Valuable Player Award by a comfortable margin. At the time of this writing, Reyna had received 40 of 103 votes, corresponding to 38.83%, with 19 days of voting left (subject to extension should RB somehow win a playoff round or two. Yeah, I know, won't happen, but I need to put that in just in case). There is a dead heat for second place, with Chris Leitch and Markus Schopp tied with 17 votes (16.5%) each, followed by Kevin Goldthwaite with 16 votes (15.53%) and Ronald Waterreus with 14 (13.59%). Further down are Santino Quaranta (five votes), Jon Conway (two) and Dane Richards, Hunter Freeman and Seth Stammler (one each). Four votes were cast for the elusive "somebody else" category. Unfortunately, the poll did not allow for write-in candidates.A few notes on the poll: as a subjective, for-entertainment-purposes-only feature, I am leaving it up to each individual voter to def
So far, San Diego is winning the National League wild card race AND the poll. But there's a whole week left, and the Phillies are only half a game back. And San Diego could still win the West. So, anything's possible. Well, except St. Louis winning the Wild Card -- therefore, that is no longer an option.Keep voting here, and we'll post the results of our opinion poll next week. And we'll see how it compares with reality.
My July 27 poll asking which one writer from the selected group is most likely to still be in print in 100 years turned out almost exactly the way I thought it probably would. Maybe I should have avoided placing JK Rowling in the list of choices so close to the release of Harry Potter the 7th because so many readers were still excited by the new book.
But I can't really quarrel with the
Aaand here's where we stand with one day left for voting! It was a tumultuous day here at Majorly English HQ, with the Hantaphiles coming out of nowhere to jump ahead by like 50 votes, only to see the Yes's coming roaring back like some sort of tiger on a motorcycle. I'm going to leave the poll open for one more day, and we stand right now with a 7 vote difference between the two major
Here's where we stand so far on my new Notre Dame blog proposal. The 'nays' started out strong, but the grass-roots efforts of the 'yeas' came surging back. I'm going to leave the poll open until Good Friday, then close it, and then open it back up again on Sunday for 40 days.
Actually, I'll just leave it open until Friday, when your voices shall be tallied and heard. I just want to say
Voted in the CRC Monthly POll? No? Just scroll down to the bottom of the posts and there it be. I'm asking readers to finish the following sentence: "I would like my short stack of blueberry pancakes served by..." The choices: Hillary, McCain, Obama, Swamp Thing, Red Sonja. Clearly, this is a proxy for who should inhabit the White House in '08. Hillary backers--things aren't looking good. Two votes. Hillary doesn't serve, she gets served. Usually stacks of subpoenas. Obama? Zip. There's a PC thing going on too...a black guy serving you piping hot flapjacks, putting a spit shine on your shoes, polishing the silver? Forget it. None of this is going to happen. Besides, Obama doesn't spit...he expectorates. Likewise, no service from McCain. Maybe if it was served by an advancing wave of Apache attack helicopters and you were dining at the Baghdad Garden Hilton. That leaves Swamp Thing...does he even have an opposable thumb?...and Red Sonja. Red is currently leading the pack with four
