Last Friday I posted about John McCain's running mate, Alaskan Gov. Sarah Palin, and her record on the environment. I knew at the time that she opposed protecting polar bears and I eventually learned she believes global warming is a myth. Now we're getting a clearer picture of just how far she is willing to go to protect oil companies and stop protections for threatened species.

GRAPHIC footage of the first polar bear seen in Iceland in 20 years being shot dead by police has been posted on the internet. The bear, an adult male weighing around 250kg, was presumed to have swum some 300km from Greenland or from a distant chunk of Arctic ice to Skagafjordur in northern Iceland. It was planned to sedate the animal and move it back to

I’ve never seen a polar bear in the wild. I probably never will…and I’m guessing the same is true for most people. Even so, when I heard today that the great white bear was put on the Endangered Species list it made me incredibly sad, disappointed, and even a bit angry. The ice the bears [...]

The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is a bear native to the Arctic. The world's largest land carnivore, an adult male weighs around 300–600 kg (660–1320 lb), while an adult female is about half that size. Although it is closely related to the brown bear, it has evolved to occupy a narrow ecological niche, with many body characteristics adapted for cold temperatures, for moving across snow, ice, a
The Polar Bear may be driven to extinction by global warming within 100 years if the climate change continues to melt the North Pole’s Ice. So, let us stop global warming! Save the polar bear, save the earth!

Animal activists on Monday pressed the US government to add the polar bear to the list of endangered animal species before the sell-off of oil and gas drilling rights in Alaska begins in the coming days."An endangered listing can affect the sell-off of the oil drilling rights," Brandon Frazier, a spokesman for global animal welfare group International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) said."The authorities would have to get approval through the Fish and Wildlife Service to conduct drilling if there is an endangered species that inhabits the area."The US government is due on Wednesday to offer several million acres of polar bear habitat in the Chukchi Sea in Alaska for sale for oil and gas exploration leases. The lease-sale would make the polar bears' habitat "vulnerable to big business intere
“Endangered Species Act listing decisions must be based only on science, and the scientists have finished their work on the polar bear listing. There is no reason for political appointees to interfere. Time and again, delays like this one have been used by bureaucrats in Washington to illegally overrule and rewrite the conclusions of agency [...]
Every kid should have a pooping polar bar jelly bean dispenser. It looks like a cute polar bear but when your press the bears rear it will poop a butterscotch or cola flavored jelly bean. It is advertised as the “Sub-zero poopin hero.” With global warming and all polar bears might face extinction. I am glad we have this item to share with future generations so they too can remember the majesty of the polar bear.
I said I'd be having a jazzy evening on Friday, and a gang of us certainly did. We met in Lambeth, just across the river from the Houses of Parliament, and headed into an ex church, which was the site of the gig by the very excellent Polar Bear. I'd been listening to their back catalogue during the week such as "Held on the Tips of Fingers" as well as a few demo tapes that were loaded to their web site. So, with softly spoken band leader Seb Rochford (drums), Pete Wareham (Tenor and Baritone saxophone), Mark Lockheart (Tenor saxophone), Tom Herbert (Double Bass), Leafcutter John (mandolin and electronics) didn't disappoint and we had an evening of eclectic fusion jazz, featuring electronica, performed to a warm and friendly audience, washed down with beer (till it ran out), then lager and cider. Here's an extract. This is another painting that I am working on…still in progress…a Polar Bear. It’s a smaller miniature (…as you can see by the coin ).
I was really intrigued by the light and ambient feeling when I saw the subject and tried to bring that out in the painting.

U.S. Sportsmen work to defeat amendment(Columbus) – The nation’s sportsmen have stood up on behalf of polar bear conservation. Congressmen have refused to impose restrictions on big game hunters that would have crippled polar bear conservation. On June 27, the U.S. House of Representatives defeated a last minute amendment to HR 2643, the House Interior Appropriations Bill, which would have banned the import of polar bear trophies. Voting 188 to 242, the House turned down anti-hunters’ efforts to prohibit American big game hunters from pursuing healthy, sustainable polar bear populations in Canada.“It appears U.S. representatives recognized that the effort to ban Americans from polar bear hunting is baseless from a conservation standpoint,” said U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Senior Vice President Rick Story. “Science that shows polar bear populations are at historic highs and that there are no imminent threats to the healthy, huntable populations.”The U.S. Sportsmen’s Allia
The Berlin Zoo is taking in a fortune as visitors line up to see the first polar bear born at the zoo in 33 years. (full article here) The bear, named "Cute Knut" (of all things, rolls eyes) apparently someone thought it cute when it's father was able to get excited enough in front of all those visitors to actually make "Cute Knut." Hopefully, Cute Knut is not affected by all the press and attention and does not turn out to be overly-theatrical like the bear in this clipart...sigh. --The Clever Cynic, http://theclevercynic.blogspot.com/E-mail: the_clever_cynic@yahoo.comThe Clever Cynic, http://theclevercynic.blogspot.com/

John J. Jackson, III from Conservation Force sent me the comments that they filed with the USFWS in regards to the listing of the Polar Bear! The following response is very long but it is a must read! We all need to realize how incredibly important this legislation is in regards to our hunting rights and for the conservation of the Polar Bear! The United States Fish and Wildlife Service is not the agency that should become the regulatory arm for greenhouse gases and increased carbon emissions. It is not in the best interest of the Polar Bear and not in the best interest of the American citizens. Please read the following in its entirety!April 5, 2007Supervisor, United States Fish and Wildlife ServiceMarine Mammals Management Office1011 East Tudor Road, MS 341Anchorage, AK 99503Phone: 907-786-3800RE: Comment in Opposition to the Proposed Rule to List All Polar Bear as Threatened, 72 FR 1064 (January 9, 2007)Dear Sir,This is a comment in opposition to the proposed listing of all p
I've probably been reading a tad too much German education news recently, so probably made a leap in logic that not everyone will take with me. But this story about Knut, a baby polar bear who was abandoned by his mother in the Berlin Zoo, struck something within me that seems highly ironic. And not just because environmentalists are calling for the death of an endangered animal:
When Knut was

Last week we found out that the government is pondering the classification of the Polar Bear on the Endangered Species List as threatened. Apparently they've finally accepted the need to recognize the problems sounding the disappearance of Antarctic's ice mass. By classifing the Polar Bear as threatened our government leaders is taking a good first step in protecting that region's unique environmental features. But I can't help ask the question why?! Could they actually be accepting the facts supporting Global Warming? The present administration has made it clear of their intention to eventually drill for oil in ANWR. Protecting the Polar Bear on the Endangered Species List will also mean protecting it's environment, which in turn will make it more difficult for them to take over the area. I am all for protecting this vital environment and the unique animals living there but I wonder if the government really is. Is this a PR ploy to make themselves look good in the eyes of conserv
