Pulitzer-prize winning poet Gary Snyder, of the San Juan Ridge, Wednesday won the $100,000 Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize - one of the nation's most prestigious and largest literary awards.Snyder, 77, who began writing in the '50s as a member of the beat movement along with Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, is the author of more than a dozen books of poetry, essays and translations. Since becoming a dog owner, I have promised myself not to turn BV into a cutesy-poo puppy show. Yes, I did post pictures of my dog...but I'm trying to keep it together, all things considered.Anyway, I do feel compelled to share a little funny from a shitty (literally) day.Yes, my dog Bobo has diarrhea. It started last night...and has been working itself out (again - literally) all day today. When emailing someone near and dear about the state of my dog's poopy affairs, I used the term "rhea" as short-hand for diarrhea....to which N&D replied:"Rhea Perlman?"Being a semi-professional scatologist, I couldn't let the visual opportunity pass me by without a little riff. So, I replied to the question "Rhea Perlman?" with a poem:Rhea shot out his assand did a tap dancesaid "it smells in here

I think I'm pretty secure in the fact that I read the things I read, poetry and prose, because I enjoy them and not because they are works that you 'should' read. I would hate to become that sort of person, who spouts the names of authors to impress other people rather than because I have a genuine pleasure in reading their works. It is always nice to have this reaffirmed, though, as it was yesterday. I was idly opening the Penguin Book of English verse at random and reading the odd poem. This book is arranged chronologically, rather than in chunks of single poets, a method I really like. The other day there was a discussion in my office about the Mona Lisa and someone was saying what a disappointment it was; this is not a surprising view, it is such a familiar image that when some people a

I took AP English in high school. I assumed that because I liked to read and write, that it might be the thing for me and I could get college credit. And a B would really equal an A when it came to the whole GPA thing…
But then the Summer Reading List was handed out.
Catch 22? The invisible Man? Ew. None of these books appealed to me.
My mother drove me straight to Given’s to purchase the 9 books on the list. I pretended to read them, but I didn’t. I got the Cliff Notes and muddled my way through the reports that I was required to write. I guess I did well.
The class wasn’t what I expected it to be. And I’m not sure if this was the class that I was first introduced to “The Jilting of Granny Witherall” (my mother could tell you) but
I was very fortunate to have seen her and Mark Doty give a lecture at the Dodge Poetry Festival a number of years ago. I can't believe I just remembered right now that it's national poetry month. Another thing which I should celebrate, but have no desire to. All kidding aside I do plan on talking about this a little more shortly. To start off with here is a lecture I went to celebrating the 100th birthday of George Oppen. I really only stayed for about an hour when I realized the event was to go on for about 3 hours.
I like poetry. It's fun to read and even more fun to write. I enjoy the rhythm that well crafted words can have as they sit on a page - their hidden accents crying out to be given voice. Most of the poetry I have read in my life has not had much to do with money. It's mostly about love, or beauty, or love, or the violence inherent in the system, or love. Mostly it is just about love. My favorite poet is probably William Blake - he has this craziness about him that I find appealing and interesting. He didn't really write about money either, so that is what makes this little bit that I found the other day all that more interesting.Let wealth come in by comely thrift,And not by any sordid shift:'Tis hasteMakes waste;Extreames [sic] have still their fault; The softest Fire makes the sweetest Ma

Firstly thanks to Kate for organising this month-long Modest Poetry Challenge. It may not be National Poetry Month in the UK, but it is in this house, and my love of poetry has been reawakened. Although I have still occasionally read poetry over the past few years, I don't think I've thought as much about it since I was at school and it has been very enjoyable. As I mentioned I've been using OpenLearn to do a short course on poetry and this by Ezra Pound is one of the poems that is used as an example on the course where it is not discussed in any great detail other than to show the power a short poem can have. For me it is quite a perfect and beautiful poem. (It also reminded me how much I used to love Ezra Pound's writing, and I was saddened to see the other day that, according to Sheffie
Want to lift you spirits? Well how about this - let’s learn to jot down some poetry - poetry can really bring a dull mind up and help one see life from a whole new spectrum. Most of you reading this think you would only be wasting thy precious time reading poems and writing poetry - I beg to differ. Alfred Tennyson, Robert Bly, David Thoreau, William Blake, Emily Dickinson, James Joyce, Joanna Baillie - all great poets who found great dimensions in the use of the written word. These poetry lovers and many more just like them, see here: all about poets, thought man could, and can see more into his existence by expressing himself through the written word. Go there and find wonderful poets and consciousness-raising poetry that I’m sure will enlighten your mental state. Words can hurt - b

Poetry these days almost seems like a dying art form. Can you think of any modern poets?
It seems our knowledge of poetry tends to be more based on our experiences from our high school english class rather than first hand knowledge of something we read in a bookstore.

Here's a poem we all know: The Second Coming by William Butler Yeats Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity. Surely some revelation is at hand; Surely the Second Coming is at hand. The...

April is National Poetry Month in the USA. I love poetry so I'm going to post a poem every couple of days to celebrate poetry month. No Ordinary Sun by Hone Tuwhare Tree let your arms fall: raise them not sharply in supplication to the bright enhaloed cloud. Let your arms lack toughness and resilience for this is no mere axe to blunt nor fire to smother. Your sap shall not rise again to the moon's pull. No more incline...

At the supermarket today, minding my own business. Little cutie and mom wander into my shopping space. She couldn’t have been more than three. “Mommy,” she says, “I have a poem I want to tell you.” Mom is distracted. Looking at cans, putting things in the cart. She doesn’t respond. “Is that ok? Just a little poem?” Mom says something nondescript. Still no eye contact. We moms have a lot on our minds. I pause. Pretend to read the label a moment longer. “I smell the flower, it smells sweetie sweet. The birdie sounds tweety tweet.Berries are my favorite tweet.” (She actually said tweet instead of treat. Cute, or what?) There was more, but mom was walking away and taking the poem with her. I stood in the aisle, lonely now, repeating

World Poetry Day is commemorated on March 21. This day was declared by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1999. The purpose of the day is to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world and, as the UNESCO session declaring the day says, to "give fresh recognition and impetus to national, regional and international poetry movements."«The year 2008 is of particular significance for poetry. Indeed, the United Nations has proclaimed it International Year of Languages. Languages are the very material of poetry constituting the substance out of which poems are made. For poets, this year is therefore the occasion to reflect and act on the extraordinary richness that linguistic diversity offers for their art.»

This page would have other uses as well, as it is not titled and therefore not restricted to just poetry.**Blank Poem Page**(I'll be making other variations of this page in the coming days, just keep your eyes peeled.)

One of the things that bugs me as a taxpayer but love as an employee are intersession courses. It's my high school's summer school. If kids don't pass their classes in the regular school year, the district pays, at great expense, for them to take it over. It doesn't add anything to their education since they already covered the material- it's a complete waste of money. On the other hand, it allows teacher to make some extra money.
Anyways, there's an intercession class in my room during my free period. The teacher is very good and cares about teaching, but the way she teaches poetry is interesting from a political point of view.
First, she tells children that poetry is boring because most of it is by "dead white guys" and that they can't relate to it. Now, isn't that kind of limiting?
My mother kept the Oxford Book of English Verseon her bedside table and, striking a dramatic pose mid-hallway would launch into, for example, a Robert Browning poem at any given moment or some funny song with a clever lyric from her childhood. My father knew Shakespeare like the back of his hand and lovingly lacquered each new volume of the John Dover Wilson and Arthur Quiller Couch set from the New Shakespeare before placing it in order on his special shelf for them. He would then skip down the stairs, jangling the change in his pocket, singing a George M. Cohan song on his way to spinning the latest Toscanini LP. Among the few books remaining from my childhood are A. A. Milne's When We Were Very Young, Now We Are Sixand Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses. I grew u

Korean poetry began to flourish under Confucian scholarship in the Goryeo period, prior to that most models imitated were of Chinese lyric poetry. Collections were repeatedly printed. With the rise of Joseon nationalism, poetry developed increasingly so and reached its apex in the late 18th century. There were attempts at introducing imagist and modern poetry methods in the early 20th century, and in the early republic period, patriotic works were very successful. Lyrical poetry dominated from the 1970s onwards. 욱

Sooo easy - I love or hate everything - there's no gray area for me; I'm drastic!Things I Love1. My girls [that's mushy and cliché] Dog Rescue. It's my passion. I specialize in the rehabilitation of bully and brachycephalic breeds. I've been involved with over 6 dozen successful placements so far. I'm on sabbatical right now though. I've kind of had my fill of abused Pit Bulls and tepid Boxers for the time being.2. Strawberries. Except, I don't get why people view them as sexy or as an aphrodisiac. I

Sometimes, when i look back at the times when i actually wrote stuff on a paper, i am filled with nostalgia and dolorous. I no longer write poetry nowadays due to my hectic life. The Polynesian language is soft and musical; there are few harsh sounds. It contains more than 20,000 words and the number in everyday use was remarkably large for a people whose language had not been reduced to writing. These words and their combinations are capable of expressing a great variety of fine shades of meaning. How language was preserved. It is surprising that without writing to preserve their language the widely separated groups of Polynesians should have retained a common language for some thousands of years. But their language was preserved with great fidelity. Much attention was given to the use of words and to pronunciation. Children were trained to apply the right words to objects and to ideas, and young men who had not learned to use the language correctly were usually not permitted to speak in public. The best trained chiefs, generals, and priests were truly great orators, and eloquence was so highly prized and considered so necessary for a leader that one who did n
Ethnic accents continue to be a strong presence in fashion, merging into a globetrotter look. Spring 2008 means the revival of Asian influences brought forward into an eclectic mix: obi-style belts at Alessandro Dell'Acqua, variations on the Mao collar at 6267, Max Mara and Prada (and not only), silky fabrics, dragon prints and calligraphic motifs, kimono tops, caftan coats and cheongsam dresses. Designers took all this traditional elements from Chinese, Japanese, and Korean culture and created feminine, relaxed looks.

Awaken To a new dawn,
I stretch to Infinity ‘n reach Beyond the Stars,
In an instant I return,
filling every tissue, sinew, with Joy,
I feed the nectar of life, into each molecule and cell,
The mind and body embrace Divine love
Through the eye of time I see eternity,
Life in life shine bright,
Shine the torch of majestic light,
Find the path to my universal frame,
So I may bask in the wisdom of pure potential,
Guide my hand to write your words.
the writers prayer - michael levy
As usual, the prayers I post here come from the World Prayers Prayer Wheel. I love using it because it has in it’s database a collection of poems from a wide range of traditions. I often find a prayer I like though I will admit that some need some tweaking for a Pagan such as myself to to feel comfortable using them.
This prayer is wonderful as is. I chose it to post because it made me think of the upcoming Winter Solstice to that new dawn at the end of the longest night.
Recently I purc
Book Reviews
When I do my classroom observation on Fridays I generally have time, when the kids are out of the classroom at lunch or in “specials”, to peruse the classroom library. As I do this I take notes on what they are about, what strikes me about them, what I like, etc. Today I spent a little time today transcribing those notes as formal book reviews on Epinions.
Normally my payrate in Epinions translates into, quite literally $1-2 a month, but for all of December I can earn $10 for every 10 reviews I write. So, its worth taking the time to transcribe my notes now as opposed to later.
Anyway, for your reading pleasure:

TIPS FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE: PROVIDED BY ENGLISH POETRY Wordsworth, considered to be a defining member of the English Romantic movement, displayed love for simplicity. We should aim to use the word ‘simplicity’ as the guide word for chalking out a lifestyle pattern for ourselves.Lifestyle is not a narrow concept. Its scope is as wide as life itself. The term ‘lifestyle’ depicts one’s attitude towards life, the way we lead our life and the values that we not only believe in, but also practice. Being healthy does not mean having only a healthy body. It also entails possessing a healthy mind and a healthy heart too.In the modern mechanical lifestyle, the biggest challenge for a human being is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Our life is full of ups and downs but the health line should go up, up and up. We read many books on health and nutritious food. But merely possessing the knowledge does not make us healthy unless we practically follow it. We have a saying, “Eat drink and

When I was young and living in an abusive situation, I found great solace in two things: Listening to Charles E. Fuller on "The Old Fashioned Revival Hour" radio program, and writing poetry. The reason I loved poetry was because it allowed me to express my feelings in metaphors which were never understood by my abusing parent. I became very good at "hiding behind words" and I wrote some quality poems. (Practice makes perfect!)It seems every time I've been in a dark place I've gone back to poetry. And when I'm celebrating an over-coming in one of my friend's lives, I write poetry about it. And, of course, every time I've been "in love" I've gone back to poetry!Poetry is one of the best forms of therapy known to man. David, The Psalmist, put all of his deep personal feelings into his poems (also called "psalms"), and as a result we have a wonderful resource in God's Word for our most intimate moments with The Lord. When I was 10 years old, I wrote a poem called "Two Faces Have I",
(previous post continued)(4) The influence of BeaupuisAccording to Hudson, a “change of spirit occurred during his stay at Orleans and Blois, between which places he passed nearly a year”. He formed a close friendship whith a Republican General, Beaupuis, “an inspiring example of all in the Revoulution”. His tenderness, meekness, gallantry and utter devotion to the cause of the people are celebrated in glowing language in ‘The Prelude’. Talks with this noble friend exerted a profound influence on the poet’s mind. His hatred for all absolute rule, and his love of and pity for the “abject multitude” grew daily and he was ultimately fired with his friend’s humanitarianism and faith in the revolutionary cause and that “better days to all manking” were round the corner. His heart was now given to the people nad he felt that the revolution was the only way to right their wrongs. The September Massacres failed to disillusion him and when he returned to Paris a month la
Went outside one night to watch the f111’s flying over and came across this guy on the front of the garage between the two doors….sat still for ages…long enough for me to run inside, get the camera, put lens on, get manual settings to the point where it would take half decent photo, then actually take some!
And now for the poetry…came across this one this morning when getting school uniform out of the cupboard for Zoe:
Fairy wishes
Breezes swishes
Fluttering fairy fun
If your mind
Is anything to find
Do a dance in the sun
She surprises me constantly….hope this little interlude made you smile!
Take it easy folks…
Bless, O Mistress of Magic,
Myself and everything anear me,
Bless me in all my makings,
And keep me safe forever.
Keep me safe forever.
From every unclean spirit and sending,
From every evil wish and cursing,
From every wicked spell and glamour,
From every star that frowns upon me,
Save me till the end of my day.
That they may keep me safe forever.
Save me till the end of my day.
Let every nymph and faerie be my sister,
Let every troll and brownie be my brother,
Let every fairy-mouse and will-o-the-wisp befriend me,
That they may keep me safe forever.
That they may keep me safe forever.

I grabbed this prayer from worldprayers.org.
I am in a dark place again. I have spoken of it before and as usual it stems from too many worries, too little time and not enough money. What can I say ….. life is hard ….. as each of you who reads this already knows. We each have our own losses that we grieve, our own dark moments
1. WORDSWORTH: Democratic BackgroundAn important event of the closing years of the eighteenth century, which stirred all Europe, and the English Romantics in particular, is the French Revolution. ‘The Prelude’ tells us much about Wordsworth’s reaction to the French Revolution. Wordsworth was the first of the great Romantics to be influenced profoundly by the Revolution, which had a far reaching impact on his life and poetry. But its ideals – Liberty, Equality and Fraternity – were not new to him. The societies, which he had been familiar with, in his youth were essentially democratic. Even at Cambridge he found a strong democratic spirit:“All stood thus far/Upon equal ground..” 2. FIRST VISIT TO FRANCEFor these reasons, “The Revolution, in its earlier phases, involved no revolution in Wordsworth’s mental life”(Raleigh). During his third summer vacations, Wordsworth visited France with his friend, Robert Jones. They landed in Calais on July 13, 1790, the eve of first
