This is an interesting timeline about the planet Pluto.  As far as I know it is the first planet to lose its planetary status. It also noticeably shrinks the overall size of the solar system. ~RJH NPR article link          Pluto's Rocky Roadby Kelly Reeves1905: Percival Lowell starts the search for Planet X. The planets, including the newly discovered Neptune, didn't move around the sun in quite the way gravitational laws predicted, and Lowell proposes that an undiscovered planet must be the reason why. He never finds Planet X before his death in 1916. Feb. 18, 1930: Clyde Tombaugh takes up the search in 1929 at Lowell's observatory and proves that discovering new planets is not glamorous work. So Pluto s no longer a planet, its been termed a dwarf planet and is no longer a member of the nine planets orbiting our sun. We now have only 8 planets, but there are other things orbitis the sun and quite frankly Pluto’s always going to be there regardless of what we think or say about it. So whats the big deal? I dunno. I though it was interesting that they gave it the boot from the planethood. But in the process of finding out why they removed it from the planet list I found other interesting information regarding other orbiting bodies going round our sun. I previously wrote about the IAU’s draft update to the definition of the term “planet” which, if passed, would solidify Pluto’s long-debated status as a planet and would instroduce three other bodies as planets, Ceres, Charon and 2003 UB313.
