      Meet Pluto, the Plutoid
"Pluto, demoted from planet status in 2006, has been reclassified. It and other dwarf planets like it will be called plutoids. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) gave a full definition of what counts as a plutoid. In short: small round things beyond Neptune that orbit the sun and have lots of rocky neighbors. The two known and named plutoids are Pluto and Eris, the IAU stated. The org

Planet Pluto now change to Plutoid?
Pluto's years-long identity crisis just got more complex today. The International Astronomical Union has decided on the term "plutoid" as a name for Pluto and other objects that just two years ago were redefined as "dwarf planets."The surprise decision is unlikely to stem ongoing controversy and confusion, astronomers say. Sidestepping concerns of many astronomers worldwide, the IAU's decision, at

Why is Pluto Not a Planet????
Most of you people might still be wondering as why "" Pluto is not a planet!!"" . Even I did and when I came across this article which I would like to share with you......... Pluto was first discovered in 1930 by Clyde W. Tombaugh at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff Arizona. Astronomers had long predicted that there would be a ninth planet in the Solar System, which they called Planet X. Only

I've long been attracted to explorations of the deeper and more transcendent views of existence. What is life really about? What is the relation between the subjective and objective aspects of existence? How does reality define the nature of perception and vice-versa? Pluto in True Color Credit: Eliot Young (SwRI) et al., NASA Explanation: Pluto is mostly brown. The above picture captures the true colors of Pluto as well as the highest surface resolution so far recovered. No spacecraft has yet visited this most distant planet in our Solar System. The above map was created by tracking brightness changes from Earth of Pluto during times when it was being partially eclipsed by its moon Charon. The map therefore shows the hemisphere of Pluto that faces Charon. Pluto's brown color is thought dominated by frozen methane deposits metamorphosed by faint but energetic sunlight. The dark band below Pluto's equator is seen to have rather complex coloring, however, indicating that some unknown mechanisms may have affect

Pluto tees are a Must Have this Holiday!
Pluto might be the littlest planet, but Pluto tees are the biggest hit this Holiday season! The designs are just fun, colorful and appeal both to the kiddos and the parents. The designer Ellen Oxhorn has combined what's hip and pop right now, with genuine ideas and creative ways to see old things in a new light. Even though it is almost impossible just to pick one favorite, I have to say I love the sibling tees. My kids are each others bestfriends, and these Big Sister, Little Sister and Little Brother tees are going to be found for sure under our tree this Christmas. (25$ each)You probably have seen Pluto tees before - on magazines, TV and the hippest children's boutiques and on celebrity kids. Julianne Moore's daughter likes the pink Butterfly (23$) tee. And what do you think of the "Walk on the wild side"..... or the birdies on the tree?Available at Skimbaco.com this Holiday season. Canada-based Shawcor´s Bredero Shaw pipe-coating business has received an $85-million contract to get flow-assurance, anti-corrosion and concrete-weighting into the pipelines of Woodside’s Pluto project for liquefied natural gas, or LNG, in Western Australia. Bredero Shaw will coat the 180 kilometres of 36-inch pipeline in Orkanger, Norway during 2008 and 2009. The pipe will connect the Pluto field in Western Australia's Carnarvon basin to Woodside's LNG facility on the Burrup Peninsula. Bredero Shaw will also coat 55 km of 20-inch insulated line that ´ll bring gas to a shallow-water production platform, while 180 kilometers of six-inch pipe is needed to provide monoethylene glycol for offshore gas production pipelines.Via: Scandinavian Oil & GasPluto field,Bredero Shaw,Norway,Australia,Canada,Woodside Energy,LNG,energyblog

What are the chances of Pluto and Neptune crashing into each other?
Virtually zero. Quoting from the text "The Solar System" by Encrenaz andBibring, (1990) "...Pluto never comes closer to Neptune than 2.5 thousandmillion kilometers... The fact that the periods of Neptune are in a simpleratio is the result of a dynamical resonance that has been discoveredrecently, and which corresponds to a stable state: any modification of thetrajectory under the influence of an external perturbation would be followedby a return to the present state of equilibrium."

      Pluto's Rocky Road
This is an interesting timeline about the planet Pluto.  As far as I know it is the first planet to lose its planetary status. It also noticeably shrinks the overall size of the solar system. ~RJH NPR article link          Pluto's Rocky Roadby Kelly Reeves1905: Percival Lowell starts the search for Planet X. The planets, including the newly discovered Neptune, didn't move around the sun in quite the way gravitational laws predicted, and Lowell proposes that an undiscovered planet must be the reason why. He never finds Planet X before his death in 1916. Feb. 18, 1930: Clyde Tombaugh takes up the search in 1929 at Lowell's observatory and proves that discovering new planets is not glamorous work. For a year, he photographs the same section of sky several nights apart and then searches the images for any objects that move like a planet should. On Feb. 18 he looks at his photographic plates and knows right away that one of the dots is Planet X. May 1930: A little girl in Britai

An historical event happened at the end of the last year, when a congress of astronomers decided that Pluto, that during years was considerated a planet... hadn´t let be it, because referring data to their size considered, and was decided that it was a stone that moved instead of a planet. Mathias Pedersen (http://www.mathiaspedersen.com/) is a boy who dedicates, in his free time, to make drawings in three dimensions and two dimensions, and this is splendid. Pluto Got The Boot
So Pluto s no longer a planet, its been termed a dwarf planet and is no longer a member of the nine planets orbiting our sun. We now have only 8 planets, but there are other things orbitis the sun and quite frankly Pluto’s always going to be there regardless of what we think or say about it. So whats the big deal? I dunno. I though it was interesting that they gave it the boot from the planethood. But in the process of finding out why they removed it from the planet list I found other interesting information regarding other orbiting bodies going round our sun. Here we go: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20060825080637AAsLbRB http://www.northern-stars.com/solar_system_info.htm http://www.nasa.gov/

Questacon is Australia's premiere interactive science centre, and has a number of outreach programs that travel Australia communicating science. We also find that Pluto has a friend in New Mexico, who refuse to recognise it as a planetoid or dwarf planet, but maintain it to be a planet. The other voice you hear on this episode is that of Celine Steinfeld.

UPDATE: 3 New Planets? or Goodbye, Pluto
I previously wrote about the IAU’s draft update to the definition of the term “planet” which, if passed, would solidify Pluto’s long-debated status as a planet and would instroduce three other bodies as planets, Ceres, Charon and 2003 UB313. This draft has not gone through; instead, a different, more restricting definition of “planet” has been passed: A “planet” is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit. (http://www.iau2006.org/mirror/www.iau.org/iau0603/index.html) This new definition completely disqualifies Pluto from “planethood”, as its orbit intersects with that of Neptune, violating part (c) of the definition. However, Pluto does fall under the newly created class of “dwarf planets”; smaller bodies w

Pluto - where size is really important
BBC NEWS | World | Pluto loses status as a planet Astronomers meeting in the Czech capital have voted to strip Pluto of its status as a planet. About 2,500 experts were in Prague for the International Astronomical Union's (IAU) general assembly. Looks like a planet to me... I wonder how much it cost to host the conference and what real benefit to mankind will come of it. Does that mean it is no longer on the itinery for the 'future' trip to outer space? I mean, what real effect on humanity does it have, apart from trashing millions of library books and confusing school lessons for years to come. "Shall we spend two weeks discussing whether or not Pluto is a planet, or should we dicuss things closer to home, like how to save the planet we are living on".
