What is the most effective way to prevent sewer backups? The best way to do this is to install overhead sewers, which run along basement ceilings. They eliminate the connection between the main sewer system and the basement. With these systems, all above-ground sewage flows by gravity into the lateral line. Below-grade sewage is collected in an ejection pit. From here, it's pumped

How can I locate the valve to shut off the water supply to my home? To locate your shutoff valve, look for the outside water line that leads to your home. The water line usually flows directly from the water meter to a location inside the residence. The most likely places for the valve to be located are on the internal pipes near your outside walls or where the water enters the structure.read more

The working of plumbing involves the fitting up of tubes and pipes for controlling various forms of fluids such as sewages; steams; water and natural gas etc. In early ages plumbing components were made up of lead as a highly toxicated material used for commercial purposes but it was highly dangerous with choking tendencies therefore in this day and age the contractors have come up with a brilliant idea of introducing or suggesting clients with lead-free plumbing material. A specific leakage or clogged drain inside the corner of any house demands the proper treatment and therefore contractors job implies safe and secure plumbing system for the house as might be discussed or consulted by the builder before the construction of a specific house. The term plumbing is taken from the Latin word 'plumbum,' which stands for lead. Plumbing is the skilled trade of working with pipes, tubing and plumbing fixtures for drinking water systems and the drainage of waste. The plumbing industry is a basic and substantial part of every developed economy in order to supply clean water and to transport waste. Plumbing originated during the ancient civilizations such as the Greek, Roman, Persian, Indian, and Chinese civilisations. This is because the need for plumbing was soon realised as public baths were developed to provide portable water and drainage; however the development and improvement of plumbing systems was very slow with virtually no progress made until the 19th century. Eventually however the development of separate, underground water a

The International Plumbing License test is hard to gain a pass from. In order to win an authorized plumbing license, everyone must pass a government authorized plumbing test. Without a proper plumbing guide, this test proves to be an obstacle for many good plumber apprentices and school learning plumbers. But there are sources which provide simple solutions to this situation. As far as the International Plumbing License test is concerned, the book you get is a tome. Have you tried reading through the International Plumbing Code and International Gas Code? There are few books I've read that are more dense. Am I thick? Or is it that the guide is at fault and is actually making it more difficult to pass my plumbing test? Those are the things I used to ask myself. I also wondered, 'Perhaps I'm
A home plumbing system should meet the needs of the homeowners. If the homeowners want hot water on demand or leak-free connections, then the system should be able to handle it. The longer someone waits for hot water to reach the faucet or shower head, the more water goes down the drain. A typical homeowner loses 12,000 to 38,000 gallons of water per year waiting for hot water. A plumbing system should also be both durable and reliable. No one wants to discover water stains on the first floor ceiling or mold growing underneath the carpet in the master bedroom. In many instances, water has been leaking for a while before the damage is discovered. A plumbing system that can provide peace of mind is essential.Today, most homes have copper pipe plumbing systems for water distribution. Copper p

Plumbing is an aspect of home improvement that often comes about without choice. It is important to take care of the plumbing of your property in order to avoid emergency situations and to ensure that you are getting the best from your plumbing system. When it comes to replacing taps it can often be more complex than you may realise at first. Replacing taps can either be required as part of the installation of a new bath/basin or because your old taps have worn down. You may, however, just wish to replace your taps simply on a more cosmetic basis. It is important to understand how many 'holes' your sink has when it comes to changing your taps. The amount of holes will determine whether you can install two separate taps or whether you will have just the one serving both your hot and cold nee

To diagnose noisy plumbing, it is important to determine first whether the unwanted sounds occur on the system’s inlet side-in other words, when water is turned on-or on the drain side. Noises on the inlet side have varied causes: excessive water pressure, worn valve and faucet parts, improperly connected pumps or other appliances, incorrectly placed [...]
When my friend was training to be a golf pro he often talked about his experiences with me. He knew he was never going to make it on the professional tour, but he still wanted to pursue his dream on earning a living through his favorite pastime - golf. I would also talk about my training experiences with him and we found that even though our industries seemed completely separate (I am in the computer industry) there were many similarities in our training. It seems as long as you are doing something that interests you, even Plumbing Courses then you are most likely to succeed in your profession. If you are interested my friend makes an excellent club pro and has taught many people to love the game as much as he does!

Keeping Your Water Safe From Contamination The Plumbing SecretWhen leaks develop in your water pipes it not only can be a major headache for you to have someone come and fix, but can also be the source of potential water contamination in your pipes. The pipes that carry your fresh water supply can be affected but so can the pipes that carry away the waste water from your home. Usually starting out as barely noticeable areas of dampness in your ceilings or on your walls that you may overlook in your daily living, some leaks can even go unnoticed for many weeks or even months. When you finally come across any sort of dampness or discoloration in your paint or wallpaper, do not hesitate or ignore it. This sort of thing could quickly lead to a problem in your water system that could bring contamination into your home and to your family. Water-borne diseases can wreak havoc on your family's health and all it takes to help prevent it is to visually inspect your home's water system once in a
Humans just don’t like monotony, whether it comes to food or work. Homes are not an exception to this. While the degree of feeling monotonous about a thing varies from person to person, I am sure many of you would agree that just changing position of furniture in your living room makes the room look so different. And what’s better than renovating your home once in a while!!

When it comes to waste, water is something that is perhaps overlooked. We all know that a vast majority of the world is covered with water but this does not mean that we have lots of water to spare. Why else do you think we hear about water shortages here and there? Water is essential to the body and the resources are being used up for a useless cause.
In most homes, plumbing fixtures are critical. Most of the time, we only think of them when we hear a leaky faucet or find them dripping largely without control. Many people would want to save on spending for their homes but plumbing fixtures are something that offers more than saving water. It also helps in ensuring that all water that we use is put towards good use. Can you imagine a world without water? Hopefully we do not reach that dry spell we often term and use today.

He's the kind of guy who you know could totally protect you in the wilderness, or in the aftermath of a nuclear attack (which you survived because he's the type of guy who could build a bomb shelter, by hand, if there were any real threat of nuclear attack, which there's not, so stop giving me
Last Friday I got that sinking feeling that Plumber Steve who I had picked was not going to show up Monday and that got me thinking again…To rip apart the dining room just felt so intrusive. And did we really have to replace the entire cast iron sewage pipe? After some more thinking we decided to put the new bathroom above the kitchen (instead of above the living room) …., and to find a new plumber of course. And guess what. Plumbers Ed and Steve are already at work. Well they were gone when I came back an hour ago but hopefully will be back soon…The mini bathroom is being installed too in the kitchen, and all the plumbing will take place there.
The estimate for all the new plumbing came in around 5,000 +, leaving all the openings in the ceiling below and the walls. We just ordered the clawfoot tub at Lowes and bought the two pedestal sinks and the toilet. Today I will begin to work in the future bathroom. Prime and paint the ceiling. I chose semi gloss white for moister resistance. I haven’t really thought about the moisture built up at all until a contractor (who did a little selling job on us wanting to manage the remodel of our entire home) had mentioned it. There will be no tiles at all in the bathroom. I had installed tile in our last bathroom and am not a fan of the work and I always wanted a bathroom that looked like any other room anyway. It will be great. I can see myself already soaking in the tub by the window, breathing fresh ocean air and enjoying the water view….
Oh god the sink is completly f'ckd. I went down this morning to see what I could do. The sink was still full of water so I had to empty it with a bucket. Then, when I investigated the piperwork I found that one of the seals had completly come away - meaning that there was no sucking pulling the water away, so broken was it the i diddnt need to pull or unscrew it to pull it away from the joining pipe. Examining the pipe I saw that it was blocked up, but only for a second water began gushing out, covering me and the floor in filth. ARGH !. I did my best to cover it with my hand whilst i twisted the pipe so that it would discharge into a bucket.
With the pipes now definatly emptied of water i tried to fix the broken connection but when I tried it water would still not drain from the sink. Another geiser of water followed as I twisted the thoroughly broken pipe so that the water would flow into a bucket.
So now I am sitting in a house where the radiators dont work and where the sink's
Finding three beautiful things in not so good a day takes an effort. Let's make itÂ… 1) Modern medicines - From the moment I woke up a sudden paroxysm of sneezing thanx to my Allergic Rhinitis, almost crippled me. Trust me when I say it's a disabling condition. I popped in 5 mg of Levocetrizine and within 20 minutes, I was up and about. I even made a full breakfast and lunch, all by myself, with no help from Patty who is still not talking to me. Kudos to modern medicine. 2) Plumbing -Somehow the water supply in the main bathroom where the water heater is fitted, was cut off for two whole days. Today it got fixed, and I could have a nice warm bath as opposed to the cold showers I took for two days. 3) A realization - Cooking a full lunch all by myself from scratch, not asking for help out of pride, mad me realize what mom must feel like when she does it every single day. It's no fun to keep house. However, I will try and help mom as much
I realise that none of us on this blog has yet mentioned the decision last week to appoint Denver as the host city for the Democratic National Convention in 2008 - so let's take this opportunity to have a little 'process' posting. The announcement that Denver had secured the convention came at the end of last week, and representatives from the city were thrilled. "I'm thrilled," city councilwoman Elbra Wedgeworth told the Rocky Mountain News. The venue, more specifically, will be the city's Pepsi Center. The city is now trying to work out how to raise the $80 million it is estimated will be needed to host the convention. Money was one of the concerns that the Democrats had about Denver as a convention host, rather than New York City. Political symbolism - including the notion of Democrats being in touch with Western values, and the desire not to appear to be staging a coronation for Hillary Clinton on 'home turf' - drove the decision Denver's way. Since I'm hoping to go t
Now that our system is dead I've been forced to look into the world of heating 3 months early. When broken down, heating systems are fairly uncomplicated. There are 3 main types; free standing, wall mounted and back boilers. Free standing:These are slim boilers that are situated on the floor and usually installed between kitchen units.Wall mounted:Smaller, more compact heat exchangers. These boilers don't require the room to be vented. Back boilers:These are the first central heating systems that were on offer. They do require the room to be vented. They were installed in the fireplace and thus are treated as open flued models. When these boilers break down they tend to omit poisonous flumes. This is the system we are replacing and I can confirm that when ours started to go, the room stank.Other systems are condensing boilers and combination boilers (combi)Condensing boilers have been around for some time and as more efficient designs are bought out, more savings on fuel costs can
