Another painting from my backyard; I love the dark house and the warm fall colors surrounding it. This house belongs to my niece's neighbors grandmother. I employed a vignette style more commonly seen in watercolor, where the paint is not applied all the way to the edges. It feels softer and more harmonious to me, particularly suited to this type of canvas which needs no frame. Oil paint on gall

      Plein air again!
It has been some time since I last went out to do Plein air painting. Part of the reason is because I have been enjoying my new studio, but the other part is that I have been working hard and have enjoyed sleeping in. Maybe it was the fact that snow will soon be blanketing our province, or the fact that the colour in the trees are about to fade and are so somber now that I just had to paint them.

The plein air sketches are done simply to study scenes or weather or texture or light ....... whatever has grabbed my interest. They aren't intended to be finished pieces for framing, though sometimes they do become finished and are framed. In that case I scan them and keep a print in the sketchbook, part of a series of linked sketches and ideas. The time spent looking intently and studying colour, form, line and light fixes the subject in your memory. These sketches were of the bark on some birch trees that fascinated me with the multiple 'eyes' in the bark pattern. $100 via PayPal, free shipping within US 7 x 5″, Oils on canvas covered hardboard, unframed Since I’m still sick, I am bumping up a painting of one of my favorite trees along the Hudson River to share with my viewers. It’s become hidden in the depths of my blog, so I’m happy to pull it up to the top again where it can be seen. I did some sketches today, but don’t have the energy to get into the workshop to take pictures of them and do the uploading. This was painted on a warm, sunny fall day. I took advantage of it by driving over to Garrison and painting my favorite tree along the Hudson River. It is just opposite West Point Military Academy. Fortunately for me, the tree still had leaves, though it was already November! This painting is already dry and varnished, so it’s ready to send and would make a great gift!

Here is another plein air painting from the wonderful Bannerman Island. This is the view downriver from the castle residence ruins at the peak of the island. It is quite a striking Hudson River view from up there! The skies were threatening and overcast, but it didn’t rain. When the little tug boat and huge barge went by, I snatched the opportunity and painted them in. They are so tiny next to the enormous mountains! Here’s a photo of my setup on top of the castle ruins, before I started painting. I love using my little, featherweight pochade box for these small works. It’s about the only way to get around the island and paint. A p

River View at the Riverview en plein air
8×10″, Acrylic on canvas covered hardboard SOLD This is my painting from yesterday’s Artists on Location event in Garrison, New York. It’s a terrible photo; the sky is really not cyan, and the water is more muted in the actual painting. I had to take the photo in my car before I delivered the painting. That threw the colors all out of whack. The painting sold at the auction, so I won’t have a chance to get a better photo. It was freezing cold yesterday morning, so I parked my car at the Riverview Restaurant’s lot in Cold Spring and painted from the passenger seat, using my little pochade painting box! They have a fabulous view of the Hudson River and Storm King Mountain. Unfortunately, there is a sewage treatment plant next door, but whipping out my Creative License, I turned that back into the nice grassy field that it used to be. I left in the train tracks, which run up along the Hudson to Poughkeepsie. Here’s a pic of the framed painting, a

Cold Spring on a Hot Day en plein air
12×24″, Oils on canvas This is one of the paintings that is in my current show at the Bannerman Island Gallery. It’s one of my all-time favorites. As I said to the gallery owner, I hope it doesn’t sell! It was painted over two swelteringly hot days on location in Cold Spring, NY, along the shore of the Hudson River. That’s Breakneck Ridge on the right side, and Storm King Mountain is hidden behind the tree on the left. The Opening Reception is tomorrow (Saturday, 10/13) from 4-6. Come join us if you can! I decided to do this one very small, and sat in front of one of my favorite fall trees to paint. The quarter is there for size reference; the painting is just 2″ square! I love the way the tree twists and bends. These tiny stretched canvases are just too cute. The edges of the canvas are painted gold. The painting comes in a gold gift box with a gold bow, and the easel is included. Do your holiday shopping early. View from Olana en plein air
16×20″, Oils on canvas covered hardboard SOLD This is a terrible photo of my second painting that sold last night following the Rhinebeck Paintout. I had to take the photo with a flash and dismal lighting. The color of the sky and background hills is waaaaay off! In spite of the bad photo, I did want to be able to at least show an idea of what my other painting looked like. I love this view from Olana looking toward the Catskills. If there’d been a more dramatic sky yesterday, I’d have done a vertical format instead, or a lower horizon that featured more sky. The tall, relatively narrow tree has a wonderful shape, but showcasing the top of the tree would have left nothing happening on the other side of the painting on this clear, nearly-cloudless day. Cutting out much of the sky showcases the background mountains to draw us into the painting. Many thanks to my buyers from last night for sharing my love of the Hudson Valley in art.
Gazing Up at Olana en plein air
12×16″, Oils on canvas covered hardboard There is nothing for a Hudson River painter quite like standing in the yard at Frederic Church’s estate and looking up at his home, paintbrush in hand. Spending an occasional day at Olana makes me appreciate the history and drama of painting in the Hudson Valley. This painting, done on location at Olana a few weeks ago, needed a few studio tweaks before I could call it done. As you can probably tell by looking at the painting, the drawing of the mansion took up most of my painting time on site! The sun was moving quickly and the lighting changed dramatically before I had a chance to wrap it up. Today I touched up the trees a bit and altered the slope on the left side. Now it’s ready for a special wall—maybe yours? This painting is headed for the gallery, custom framed. Not only don’t you know how the painting will turn out, but you never know what may happen on the journey and during the process. It’s always an adventure; I think that’s why I’m so hooked! A few days ago when I went to Long Island Sound to paint at Marshlands Conservancy, it was an easy ride, and even the painting process seemed effortless. By contrast, today was a true traffic nightmare, and I felt like I fought for this painting every step of the way! That really took me by surprise. Plein air painters often dread this color. It completely dominates the landscape throughout the summer and if not handled correctly the results are a disasterous painting. Ask me how I know this LOL. I keep a little journal with musings about art and life in it. Here's a recent entry anout the color green:I watch as the clouds form and reform behind the treetops. I study the color of the trees. They're green of course....but no, I look at the green plastic pitcher on the deck. It's bright yellow green. I compare. It's not anywhere to be found in the trees. Only the sunlit grass comes close and even then the red-brown of the earth shows through causing an orange glow beneath the green grass. I look at the deep green of the chair cushio

8×10″, oils on canvas covered hardboard Bannerman’s Island and the castle-like structures there are amazing sites in the middle of the Hudson River. They are a plein air painter’s dream. The island is currently owned by New York State, and access is prohibited except by special arrangement. A huge series of explosions on the island nearly leveled the buildings. The remains are barely standing and very dangerous—hence the need to limit access to the public. Today, Bannerman Castle Trust took me to the island for a day of plein air painting. I have a show at the Bannerman Island Gallery in October and will be selling some paintings of scenes on the island. This is one of the oil sketches I did there today.
