sketches of birch tree bark, done plein air. Vivien BlackburnHow do I use sketchbooks?Using sketchbooks to work out ideas and sketching plein air are very important to me. The plein air sketches are done simply to study scenes or weather or texture or light ....... whatever has grabbed my interest. They aren't intended to be finished pieces for framing, though sometimes they do become finished and are framed. In that case I scan them and keep a print in the sketchbook, part of a series of linked sketches and ideas. The time spent looking intently and studying colour, form, line and light fixes the subject in your memory. These sketches were of the bark on some birch trees that fascinated me with the multiple 'eyes' in the bark pattern. I had no thoughts at all as to what I would do with the

Since I’m still sick, I am bumping up a painting of one of my favorite trees along the Hudson River to share with my viewers. It’s become hidden in the depths of my blog, so I’m happy to pull it up to the top again where it can be seen. I did some sketches today, but don’t have the energy to get into the workshop to take pictures of them and do the uploading.
This was painted on a warm, sunny fall day. I took advantage of it by driving over to Garrison and painting my favorite tree along the Hudson River. It is just opposite West Point Military Academy. Fortunately for me, the tree still had leaves, though it was already November!
This painting is already dry and varnished, so it’s ready to send and would make a great gift!

When I received word today that this painting had sold in a gallery, I went looking on my website and couldn’t find it! Sometimes I just forget to post my work, and this one never made it onto my site. This painting was done in late September and went straight to the Bannerman Island Gallery.
The November rain has enhanced the park like feeling of the neighboring lot. 9x12" oil on masonite. I like doing this vignette style on a pre-toned panel. $125.00 free shipping in USA!Thanks for looking at my work!

Pitt Pens, 8×10″ in my sketchbook
I bought a set of warm and cool grey Pitt pens a couple of weeks ago and finally had a chance to test drive them in my sketchbook. They were lots of fun to draw with, but the barrel values really don’t match the ink, which makes it a challenge to select the right pen! This is in my bound sketchbook, so is not for sale.

This was painted high on a hilltop above the Hudson River, behind the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park. I was really hoping to paint down by the river, but when I arrived at the location, I learned that the road has been closed all season for repairs. Although that was a huge disappoinment, I found this beautiful spot behind the mansion from which to paint the little red boathouse that I love to put into my paintings from Hyde Park. Pretty soon, all that beautiful fall foliage will be gone!

This was painted on location at Bannerman’s Island along the shorline by the Wee Bay. Zack, who works on maintaining the grounds there, told me he’d just cut down brush in this area, and it might make for a great painting location. He was right! The skies had cleared a bit by then, so I even had some sunshine at last.

Here is another plein air painting from the wonderful Bannerman Island. This is the view downriver from the castle residence ruins at the peak of the island. It is quite a striking Hudson River view from up there! The skies were threatening and overcast, but it didn’t rain. When the little tug boat and huge barge went by, I snatched the opportunity and painted them in. They are so tiny next to the enormous mountains!
Here’s a photo of my setup on top of the castle ruins, before I started painting. I love using my little, featherweight pochade box for these small works. It’s about the only way to get around the island and paint.

This is my painting from yesterday’s Artists on Location event in Garrison, New York. It’s a terrible photo; the sky is really not cyan, and the water is more muted in the actual painting. I had to take the photo in my car before I delivered the painting. That threw the colors all out of whack. The painting sold at the auction, so I won’t have a chance to get a better photo.
It was freezing cold yesterday morning, so I parked my car at the Riverview Restaurant’s lot in Cold Spring and painted from the passenger seat, using my little pochade painting box! They have a fabulous view of the Hudson River and Storm King Mountain. Unfortunately, there is a sewage treatment plant next door, but whipping out my Creative License, I turned that back into the nice grassy field that it used to be. I left in the train tracks, which run up along the Hudson to Poughkeepsie.

This is one of the paintings that is in my current show at the Bannerman Island Gallery. It’s one of my all-time favorites. As I said to the gallery owner, I hope it doesn’t sell! Many thanks to everybody who came out to Ward Pound Ridge Reservation today for our second show reception and to see us paint! The building with the gallery where our show is has a nice view of the little “toll booth” on the preserve where the parking fees are collected. The trees beyond were at peak fall performance, and the fields were ablaze with pink grasses. It provided the perfect fall subject to paint while chatting with visitors to the show.

I am finally getting a little tired of overcast mornings. I decided to do this one very small, and sat in front of one of my favorite fall trees to paint. The quarter is there for size reference; the painting is just 2″ square! I love the way the tree twists and bends. These tiny stretched canvases are just too cute.
The edges of the canvas are painted gold. The painting comes in a gold gift box with a gold bow, and the easel is included. Do your holiday shopping early.

This morning I painted at the Open Land Foundation on Baxter Road in North Salem, New York. I met lots of friendly folks with their dogs, and thoroughly enjoyed the gorgeous fall weather and serene location. I walked all over trying to select a scene; it seemed like there was a paintable vista everywhere I looked. I finally chose this location near the road, drawn by the overlook to the pond and the strong color of the goldenrod.

This is a terrible photo of my second painting that sold last night following the Rhinebeck Paintout. I had to take the photo with a flash and dismal lighting. The color of the sky and background hills is waaaaay off! In spite of the bad photo, I did want to be able to at least show an idea of what my other painting looked like.
I love this view from Olana looking toward the Catskills. If there’d been a more dramatic sky yesterday, I’d have done a vertical format instead, or a lower horizon that featured more sky. The tall, relatively narrow tree has a wonderful shape, but showcasing the top of the tree would have left nothing happening on the other side of the painting on this clear, nearly-cloudless day. Cutting out much of the sky showcases the background mountains to draw us into the painting. Many thanks to my buyers from last night for sharing my love of the Hudson Valley in art.

Today I participated in Barrett Art Center’s Rhinebeck paintout. I went up to Frederic Church’s estate, Olana, to enjoy the beautiful weather and soak up some of his inspiration. I loved the way the tree framed the building, and the way the shadows cast on the side of the mansion and foreground made the light yellow glow.
I finished two paintings at Olana today. I’ll post the other one tomorrow. Both sold this evening.

This morning I painted from a home high up on a hilltop in North Salem, New York. There were beautiful views of distant hills to the west, but when I saw these bright pink flowers against the dark foliage, I knew I’d found my painting spot!

There is nothing for a Hudson River painter quite like standing in the yard at Frederic Church’s estate and looking up at his home, paintbrush in hand. Spending an occasional day at Olana makes me appreciate the history and drama of painting in the Hudson Valley.
This painting, done on location at Olana a few weeks ago, needed a few studio tweaks before I could call it done. As you can probably tell by looking at the painting, the drawing of the mansion took up most of my painting time on site! The sun was moving quickly and the lighting changed dramatically before I had a chance to wrap it up. Today I touched up the trees a bit and altered the slope on the left side. Now it’s ready for a special wall—maybe yours?
This painting is headed for the gallery, custom framed. Email me if interested in purchasing it, by clicking the link at the top of the page, and I will pass along the gallery contact info.

This was painted from the front porch of my friend Cathy’s house. She has a fabulous view of the distant hills, and the foreground tree was lit up against the dark hillside. Plein air painting is always so full of suspense. Not only don’t you know how the painting will turn out, but you never know what may happen on the journey and during the process. It’s always an adventure; I think that’s why I’m so hooked!
A few days ago when I went to Long Island Sound to paint at Marshlands Conservancy, it was an easy ride, and even the painting process seemed effortless. By contrast, today was a true traffic nightmare, and I felt like I fought for this painting every step of the way! That really took me by surprise. I’ve painted the Constitution Marsh overview from Boscobel so many times that I never thought this marsh view in Rye would give me such a battle. I came home so tired that I had to take a nap!

This is another plein air painting done along the Hudson River from my favorite spot in Cold Spring, NY. I just can’t get enough of this location! Storm King Mountain is on the left, and Breakneck Ridge on the right, with Little Stony Point jutting out into the river. Watching the huge barges, tugs and beautiful sailboats pass through the middle could become a favorite pastime! The clouds were truly amazing in the morning, and the chroma was so strong that I had to pull out the phthalo blue to get the beautiful almost-turquoise color low in the sky.

Plein air painters often dread this color. It completely dominates the landscape throughout the summer and if not handled correctly the results are a disasterous painting. Ask me how I know this LOL. I keep a little journal with musings about art and life in it. Here's a recent entry anout the color green:I watch as the clouds form and reform behind the treetops. I study the color of the trees. They're green of course....but no, I look at the green plastic pitcher on the deck. It's bright yellow green. I compare. It's not anywhere to be found in the trees. Only the sunlit grass comes close and even then the red-brown of the earth shows through causing an orange glow beneath the green grass. I look at the deep green of the chair cushio

It is the famous view from the bluff above the Hudson River, overlooking Consitution Marsh. You can see a summer view of the scene that I did last week in a smaller format by scrolling down this page! The marsh glows red in the fall and it’s a spectacular sight come late October. I’m looking forward to getting back there again this fall.
I haven’t posted this painting to my blog before, and many viewers have been asking to see more of my larger works. This is a second oil sketch that I did on location on Bannerman Island in the Hudson River yesterday. It was a real challenge with time consraints on such a complex subject. This is the remains of the castle residence at the peak of the island.
I tried to walk around the island as much as possible during the time I was there, both to take photos to work from and to do some paintings/sketches on location. I’m pleased with this one in many ways, and look forward to doing some more from this area of the island with this color reference and my photos. I may or may not go back into this painting and bring it to a more finished state.

Bannerman’s Island and the castle-like structures there are amazing sites in the middle of the Hudson River. They are a plein air painter’s dream. The island is currently owned by New York State, and access is prohibited except by special arrangement. A huge series of explosions on the island nearly leveled the buildings. The remains are barely standing and very dangerous—hence the need to limit access to the public. Today, Bannerman Castle Trust took me to the island for a day of plein air painting. I have a show at the Bannerman Island Gallery in October and will be selling some paintings of scenes on the island.
This is one of the oil sketches I did there today. It is the armory where Francis Bannerman kept his stash of munitions. I painted it sitting on the dock before it was time to leave. (It still needs a few tweaks to finish it up; I had to pack up to leave when the boat was ready to go!)

Gray Day Rocks, 6x8, oil, $100 unframed View Through the Bird Blind, 6x6, $100, unframedWe're in a terrible weather pattern, lots of clouds and then the sun breaks through, and just when you get outside the clouds return! Mother Nature's having some fun with us! The bird blind is a wooden shelter constructed in the marsh with viewing windows so you can observe the birds, waterfowl and wildlife unnoticed, a very cool place to set up and paint! These paintings reflect the gray-ness of the day and the textures of the marsh vegitation and the subtle changes in color of the rocks. Our back yard along the brook is too wet to mow this time of year. The sweet Forget-Me-Nots take over there and create an exquisite mass of tiny blue flowers beneath the Purple Martin house. I set up my easel back there this morning and painted with a friend.

It's amazing how much you learn about nature, color, light, the rhythms of the seasons and the turning from night to day when you spend time working directly from nature. Larger studio works may seem grander and have more polish and finish but they can never compete with the intimate and fresh depiction of a scene you get when you work small and quick outdoors. Katherine http://makingamark.blogspot.com/ mentioned in her response to the previous thread that we remember the uncomfortable plein air paintings/sketches - and it's very true.Burned into my memory is the day Sue and I went to the coast - the wind was icy, we were frozen (we always spend a looooong day painting on the beaches) and we hadn't done any work we were really happy with - we'd normally have several. We'd tried 2 different beaches. No shelter at all to be had as the wind was straight off the sea.At one point Sue realised she'd left her handbag in the public toilets 5 minutes walk away - half an hour earlier. She ran back and it was still there :)When it came to packing up time my mobile phone was missing - it was switched off so it wasn't as simple as ringing it to find out where it was :(. It couldn't be found so we returned to the other beach and searched the dunes - you just try to remember just which precise dip you'd sheltered in on a long stretch of identical d

What an exquisite spring day we had. I met with a group of artist friends to paint at Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining. The lake is best painted in spring before the foliage comes out. Once the trees and bushes leaf out, the lake views are obscured. Plus, the swans are there every spring and are good models! They have a nest near the bridge. I love this scene so much and have painted it many times. It presents lots of artistic challenges, so I go back every spring. Each year, I find I like my painting more than the year before. This one is my favorite from Teatown Lake so far.

I had high hopes that the sun was going to break through on my way over to Cold Spring to paint along the Hudson River at 7am this morning. I packed a bottle of iced tea and just wore a sweater. As I stood along the banks of the river, the clouds thickened and the cold wind picked up. I received a serious reality check, realizing that a warm spring day was merely wishful thinking.
This is a favorite spot of mine along the river. That rocky peak is Breakneck Ridge, and the finger of land jutting out is Little Stony Point.

I love this spot on the Hudson. What a treat that the barge came by with its tugboat escort while I was painting. I was just able to get in the main parts of the painting when it started raining. This will be tweaked a bit in the studio to finish it up, but there’s not much left to do….some minor value adjustments and a few more twigs and brush on the left side should do it.
I’ll take another photo after I do the tweaks and replace this one.

My painting buddy Sue came over just after sunrise and we walked out to paint by the lake on this beautiful spring morning. The spring colors are just coming in. The light was strong against the foreground grasses, and the red maples are beginning to bud, creating strong red-violets on the far hillside.

The word Ruby kept rolling through my mind over and over as I painted this moment.
and it's fun to say Ruby Ruby Ruby.
Which makes me say, I haven't a fondness of categorizing my art work just because every time I say landscape painting, those words don't fit really what I paint.

Hastings Water Tower en plein air12 x 16", Oils on Canvas covered hardboard$395 unframed via PayPal, free shipping within US (email me for international rates)This is a plein air painting that I did in July of the famous water tower at Hastings-on-Hudson. There has been a big environmental feud brewing between residents who want the tower restored and kept as a local landmark, and the property owner who wants to avoid the high costs of restoration and just tear it down to build something more lucrative. I love the warm colors and interesting shapes, and wanted to be sure I had the opportunity to capture it in paint before it disappeared.

A Little Night Sketch en plein air
8 x 6", Oils on canvas covered hardboard
While waiting outside the gym for my daughter, I pulled out my little pochade box and did a sketch.Painting at night en plein air is great fun, but it sure is hard to see what you're doing!
I'll be doing a little more work on this, cleaning up some edges and tweaking a bit. I didn't quite have time to finish it last night. Then I'll repost and add a "buy" link.
Fall at Leonard Park en plein air6 x 8", Oils on canvas covered hardboard$125 unframed via PayPal, free shipping within US (email me for international rates)I finally was able to snatch some plein air time today. Hooray! It was one of those spectacular fall days, with the warmth and sunshine you didn't think you'd find again until spring. I dropped my daughter at gymnastics and headed for a nearby park to take in some rays and test drive my new pochade box.I hear those giggles among those who know me. "Another pochade box?", they're asking. I already have one for oils (which is a little bigger and supports larger panels) and one that I made for gouache. I plan to use this new one for "stealth painting". heeheehee... It's so small, and I've filled it with watersoluble oils so that I can just use whatever water I have on hand for painting in cafes, my car, or even the kitchen, with no worry about fumes or toxic substances, and no need to carry oil or turp. Here's an image of the pai
Waterway, 8x10, oil Shorebird Sanctuary, 8x10, oil The Marsh Beckons, 8x10, oilThe whole feel of the marsh is changing now that we are well into November. It's cold and the colors have become muted. Even the air quality has changed, and on cold days it's dry and clear and I can hear the birdcalls and the sounds of wildlife from far over the marsh. I've had to begin wearing gloves when I paint and a few layers of clothing as the wind can cut right through you. Still I love being out there and it will have to get much colder before I stop going out. Enjoy! Each of the above paintings is $160, unframed. This painting went through many transformations.
It started out with a yellow and dark green background, but when I looked up yesterday and those yellow leaves were hanging brilliantly against the gorgeous blue sky I couldn't resist.

The changes are coming quickly to the trees surrounding our home creating wonderful abstracts in color that are allowing me the freedom to see and paint.
On Friday, Louise and Kathy were in a workshop all day - with Cecile Baird, Gordon was on airport duty and I was determined to get some time for "proper sketching" in the way I normally do - which essentially means on a much larger piece of paper than my Moleskine.
However, I'm in a slight quandary with this post - the reason being that the sketches in question are still sitting in California. I left my Saunders Waterford HP pad behind along with some pastel support - and that's being posted to New England rather than coming back to the UK and then back out there again.
Unfortunately I 'd done my sketches on the Saunders Waterford and had left the sketches in the pad!
So what we have instead are photos (click for larger version) of:
the view (rather limited by lack of car and how far I can walk carrying a chair and kit - this is the car park next to the shopping centre near the convention hotel)
the set-up - you see I really do take all that kit out with me when I go
I tried. I really really tried to find a spot and to be inspired, but this Saturday was a scratch. The sun had a lazy day - almost didn't show up! Which basically made everything look drab and colourless (see the photo taken today). And to make things worse, the snow banks - plowed to the side of the road after last Wednesday's heavy snow storm - were so high, it was impossible to see anything from the comfort of the car. And hay! I wasn't going out there! So sorry folks. I hope the sun will come back next weekend. I just can't paint without shadows!!
