Smith Pledges Continued Support for OAS Haiti Mission
By Lindsay Thompson -
Nassau, Bahamas:
Ambassador to the US and Permanent Representative to the Organisation of American States C A Smith has pledged The Bahamas’ continued support to OAS peace initiatives in Colombia and Haiti, and welcomed the OAS’s pledge of support to The Bahamas, Haiti and the Dominican Republic in the wake of Tropical Storm Noel
Ambassador Smith presented his Credentials to the OAS Secretary-General His Excellency Jose Miguel Insulza during a ceremony at the OAS Headquarters in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, November 13.
The Bahamas joined the OAS in 1982, as the 31st member, on the premise that, collectively, they could address issues of common concern. Hence, a seat on the Permanent Council serves as an avenue for such matters.
"We in The Bahamas recognise that increased hemispheric solidarity with countries whom we share history, culture and economic, social and political challenges was an undeniable
As he fielded questions about his gold lamé boots on the campaign trail in Iowa, Texas governor Rick Perry told voters in the Hawkeye State all about how Rudy Giuliani will overturn Roe vs. Wade if he’s elected president:
But his message is that all that matters is who a president would put on the Supreme Court, the place where any ruling eliminating the right to an abortion would be made. Perry said Giuliani gave his word that he would appoint “strict constructionist judges,” the kind that abortion foes think would strike down Roe v. Wade, the case that established a constitutional right to abortion.
Of course, this isn’t the first time Perry has spoken like this. Back in October, statewide newspapers, AP, and TIME Magazine carried similar stories. Of course, now Perry is calling ol’ Rudy a “culture warrior,” so I suppose that means it is newsworthy once again (as are those boots with the gold lamé).
I’ll be heading to Iowa for Thanksg
Following the marathon 164 day legislative session in 2007, the Arizona State Legislature announced today that they are working towards a significantly shorter 2008 legislative session. In fact, they are pledging that the session will be the shortest on record.“We really built a lot of bridges during the 2007 budget debate,” said Speaker of the House Jim Weiers, “It should really be a snap to get everyone together and make this happen in record time. I’m sure that the Governor is going to be more than willing to work with us.”In recent years, the legislative session has dragged on to record lengths, boasting some of the longest in history. This legislature wants to be remembered for taking the opposite approach. It is rumored that the Legislature is seeking acknowledgment from the world famous Guinness Book of World Records.“Like I have said before, let’s put all of this partisan stuff behind us for now and focus on what’s important…” said Senate Minority Leader Mar
Our local NPR affiliate, WETS, is having its pledge drive. WETS is the only NPR station in a "red state" that airs Democracy Now! We have a listener support group to keep this program on the air, called DemocracyNowTricities. The reason this program needs a listener support group, is that there are many folks who want WETS to remove the program.Yesterday WETS aired a voicemail that came into the office. It was a colorful rant against WETS. In the voicemail, a woman goes on to say her name is "Hillary Socialist" and that she wants to "make a pledge of sixty trillion dollars [...] and give it to y'all for the socialist communist work that you do." You can read the story and listen to the audio on youtube. If you think DemocracyNow! is an important program to keep on the air, support WETS and DemocracyNow!
LUSAKA, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — UN special envoy on HIV-AIDS in Africa Elizabeth Mataka said here Friday that she will concentrate on uplifting the plight of women and children in her tenure of office.
Mataka expressed concern at the increasing vulnerability among women and children especially in Africa.
She said time has come for Africa to nurture women and children as they have potential to contribute to national development.
She called on society to embrace this grouping, saying that the HIV-AIDS pandemic has continued to burden many economies including Zambia’s.
Mataka was speaking when Zambian Vice President Rupiah Banda officially launched the David Emmett Children International Center.
Mataka, who is also Children International Board chairperson, appealed to the vice president to consider allocating land to organizations that have passion for issues concerning children.
She also said that most institutions looking into the pl
The British Open Champion, Padraig Harrington, has said he will win more gold Majors after beating Sergio Garcia to take the British Open crown.
Padraig Harrington said:
“Phil Mickelson got it right when he answered questions about when he was going to win a major by saying he wanted to win more than one,”
“I’ve always had it in my head that I am going to try to do the same. That should help me move on.”
It had been eight years and 31 majors since Europe won a Major and Harrington said: “I definitely think we have banished the hang-up for the moment. We might get a year before it’s mentioned again!
“European players know how my game is in relation to theirs and the fact that I have done it will make a lot of them believe they can do it. I don’t think I’m an intimidating force.
“European golf is very strong. This may be the start and if it is I will be telling people I started it.”

HILTON begged prison guards to “pray for me” as she was returned to the jail where she almost suffered a breakdown.
She was moved for five days to California’s Twin Towers jail medical ward — and told staff she was “petrified” about going back to her old cell.
The heiress, 26, was handcuffed and returned to the stark Century Regional Detention Centre in Lynwood on Wednesday night.
She had fallen into a deep depression while locked up in the “special needs” unit and was briefly released amid uproar because of an undisclosed medical condition.
She has since told how she has “found God” and is managing to cope by praying and reading the Bible. A source at Twin Towers said: “Before she left she begged the deputies to pray for her. She was distraught at the prospect of going back.”
Paris, jailed for a probation violation, was said to have refused to eat or use the toilet for fear of being photographed on it.

THE QUEER OF ALL MEDIA IS ROOTING FOR ROSIE TO GET THE GIG.WE LOVE ROSIE !!!
Rosie O’Donnell wants Bob Barker to “come on down” to Miami and reconsider his opposition to her taking his job.
In a full page ad placed in Thursday’s Variety, Rosie, 45, honors the retiring Barker’s long television career and not-so-subtly reminds him and his employers that she loves the show, and, oh yeah, has her own life-sized Plinko Board at home.
The controversial TV star has been angling for the game show hosting gig since December 2006, when she told Extra: “See, I want The Price is Right, but no one has offered me The Price is Right…They apparently don’t want me, which is sort of sad because I have visions for The Price is Right.”
Word is, Barker, 83, is the one blocking her way.
With Rosie’s time on The View coming to a close and no replacement lined up for The Price is Right, we suggest Rosie start going door-to-door distributing spay and ne
Mark Platt 22 March 2007Rafael Benitez today dismissed rumours linking him to Real Madrid and re-affirmed his commitment to Liverpool. The Reds boss said: "I think it's important the fans know I am completely committed to Liverpool Football Club and I'm going nowhere. "I know there's been a lot of speculation in the Spanish media linking me with Real Madrid. "Any manager would be honoured to be associated with such a famous club, especially as Madrid is my home city and also my former club. However, I want to make it clear I am very happy at Anfield and very happy in England and I'm genuinely excited by what the future holds for Liverpool. "I've had some extremely positive discussions with the new owners and share their enthusiasm and determination to take this club back to the very top. "I will be sitting down shortly with both Mr Gillett and Mr Hicks to discuss things face to face, but an enormous amount of work is already underway in preparation for the way forward."
'I'm Not A Galatico' - Ronaldo has given the clearest indication yet that he's going to remain at Manchester United. Given all the smoke screens passed out by the media, I'm taking this with a healthy pinch of salt. Even if he stays at United for life, it's going to take him quite a while to even come close to Cantona's cult status.Woodgate Defuses Ronaldo Row - Well, he didn't say it outright, but the implications that it was a penalty were there. Page 3 always distracts me whenver I visit the Sun website, and today's entry almost had me in my own F-word rant! Anyway, back to the article, I don't know why this is a big deal. Just not a fan of the English national team.

Thanks to Philippa's Daily News Planet for the tip New York, NY (ABSP) - Associated BS PressAt a recent dinner with "fans" at the famous Nobu 57 restaurant, Beyonce Knowles was surprised to learn that the fans dining with her were in fact members of PETA, as they had secretly won the recent eBay auction that had offered up a dinner with Ms. Knowles. PETA, not to be confused with the other PETA, confronted Ms. Knowles about wearing fur. After a brief questioning period, they were bootie shaken out of the restaurant and Ms. Knowles continued her dinner. Later, when questioned about her usage of fur, she had this apologetic response:"I wholeheartedly apologize to all of my fans for my support of fur. I didn't know that PETA knew about my grooming habits downstairs, but apparently they have very strong cameras.
