Filed under: Displays , HDTV , Home Entertainment We've seen dynamic contrast ratios on HDTVs climb as high as 2,000,000:1 , but an in-house design from the famed Carl Zeiss blows that right out of the water. The powerdomeVELVET planetarium projector was obviously not designed with home cinema in mind, though the specifications are no less impressive.
The Egyptian Museum & Planetarium has the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts on exhibit in the western United States. No need to travel all the way to Egypt, just take a trip to Rosicrucian Park in San Jose California. The area around the Adler Planetarium by Lake Michigan is where one can enjoy one of the best, if not the best views of the Chicago skyline. You could see most of the major skyscrapers from there including the Sears Tower, Aon Center, John Hancock Center, AT&T Corporate Center and Two Prudential Plaza among many others. It's a great place to chill, and I sure did enjoy the view.

Although it looks like those lunch boxes parents give their child as they go out the door on their way to school, this gizmo is actually a portable planetarium, retailing for only $400. The Skyscout Personal Planetarium by Celestron “will get you acquainted with the night objects, including the mythology and history behind them, in addition to their name and distance from Earth. Just point and shoot, text and audio will tell you what you see.”
Useful for sailors’ “lost” trying to find their way on the high seas, but they could use a wood or perhaps Melmac bowl, some water and a weak magnet, especially if they want to go due North, or South.
An Astronomer would use more complex instruments that would be far more accurate than Star Gazer. Nor is this product for those looking for the famous stars that glitter Beverly Hills. Let’s leave them to the paparazzi.
This product is most useful to those who love to look at the sky, towards Venus and “dis
“Student of the surreal, Door, has ventured for the first time into Piston Source domain with the release of his/her Planetarium Sky EP. A collage of both the simplistic and complicated, rough and smooth, a picture is painted in your mind of staring up in awe into the summer night sky wondering if you are really looking into the vastness of the unknown, or simply staring a wall closer than you think made up to look like the far reaches of space. These 5 songs won do anything to convince you either way, but they will help you relax…”
[As usual with Piston Source releases, they are open source format designed for the free player/editor (available on the CUTS page) PxTone by Pixel of Cave Story fame. Enjoy.]

Typically from Meade Telescopes who are one of the most famous names in amateur astronomy, the My Sky Personal Video Planetarium is a fantastic little gadjet which not only operates as a mini planetarium but can also control a computerised Meade telescope (which are regularly on offer in LIDL for around £70/100€ as are their binoculars at around £10/15€).
Definitely a brilliant little item which will keep armchair astronomers content on cloudy nights and encourage you out on clear winter nights to see the real thing. Connecting this up to one of the automated scopes should let you quickly and easily find your way around the sky as though you had a trained astronomer at your beck and call.
