I finally got a laptop today so I will no doubt be posting a lot more frequently then usual, assuming that I have something to talk about. I was watching Fight Club the other day for the first time and this was one of those songs that is impossible to ignore. After realizing that I just watched a better than average movie, I went straight to Google to try to figure out what was the song that was playing at the end of the movie as the buildings fell. Without much effort I found out that it was called "Where Is My Mind?". This is a song off of the album Surfer Rosa by a band called Pixies. Released just a little before my time in March of 1988, the album has reached critical acclaim throughout the world. Kurt Cobain has cited Surfer Rosa as the basis for Nevermind's songwriting. When the intensely popular movie, Fight Club, was released in 1999, it sparked a resurgence in interest in Pixies' music. I just wanted to share with you the best James Blunt recording I have ever heard... I'll admit I am not very well informed when it comes to his work.. But as soon as I heard Blunt's live cover of the Pixies, "Where is My Mind," I was pretty bowled over! It's a song made famous, actually, by Placebo's cover version in the movie Fight Club. "Come On Pilgrim" foi o meu primeiro contacto com os Pixies. Teria os meus 15 anos quando um colega me entra estúdio (do centro de rádio da escola) dentro com aquele vinil com uma capa invulgar mas apelativa, aos pulos a dizer que tinha mandado vir, via importação e que tinha ali uma verdadeira bomba. Ter-me-á dito algo como "isto é melhor do que qualquer coisa que já tenhas ouvido, até melhor que Gun Club (que era a banda favorita dele). Não há nada como ouvir para verificar, foi o que fizemos, rodou de imediato e rodou de uma ponta à outra com algumas palavras pelo meio entre faixas e para virar o disco. Cada música constituíu um golpe profundo de rock'n'roll duro, crú e directo, sem espinhas. Conheci-os naquela tarde e logo os coloquei entre os meus eleitos onde ainda hoje permanecem. Last year in the midst of the cold and flu season, I was working retail. Alright, alright. I was a cashier at a Wal*Mart Neighborhood Market. One of the grocery store versions of Wal*Mart. And even more so, I was the Liquor Clerk. And while all of that alcohol around me would have been a great antiseptic for my sore throat and would have helped me fall asleep even with my worst headache and stuffy nose–and quite well too, might I add–I just kept drinking a huge bottle of water filled with Airborne alongside sucking on zinc lozenges like they were going out of style. This is delicious and whimsical music. They said "Bossanova" as the weakest Pixies when it was released. It was definitely because of Doolittle's shocking effect on them. Or it was Kim Deal's the breeders which got more attention than Bossanova got. As a distinctive record, Bossanova is one of the best albums in early 90s.
