Since 2000, doctors have seen about a 5- to 6-fold increase in the number of serious shoulder and elbow injuries in young baseball and softball players.
These injuries in young athletes can cause permanent damage that can affect their future growth and the future health of their joints.
Overuse injuries are also common in gymnastics, cheerleading, swimming, tennis, soccer, football and other sport
"Last year 16 million gallons of oil were consumed to make plastic water bottles"These ads were put together by the advertising agency DDB out of San Francisco, USA and art director Dustin Smith. The ads get their point across fairly effectively, but it just seems that there is something lacking in them, but I don't know what it is. Maybe it is the expressionless models, I would think you would
Bryan Hoch/MLB.Com:Kei Igawa was hit hard and often in his first start of the season, making an early exit as the Yankees dropped a 6-5 decision to the Tigers at Comerica Park on Friday in the opener of a seven-game road trip for New York. Recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start in place of demoted righty Ian Kennedy, the 28-year-old left-hander continued his struggles at the big league level, recording just two swinging strikes among the 64 pitches he threw over three-plus innings. First things first. Fire the scout that thought it would be a wonderful decision to bring Kei Igawa to New York instead of Matsuzaka.Second, now we all can clearly understand what was pissing Ian Kennedy off. I mean, I guess you really had no choice but to demote him but if I was being demoted

A study led by William Raasch, an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, has found that higher pitching mounds place more stress on the arm and shoulder of a pitcher and increases their risk of injury. The researchers say that the height difference changes the point in the pitching action at which the foot lands. Standard 10-inch mounds subject the shoulder to increased superior shear and adduction torque compared to flat ground."Nolan Ryan, who played major league baseball for 27 years, often threw pitches more than 100 mph, even past the age of 40, and he liked to throw on flat ground in his waning years. I think others might follow his lead," said Dr Raasch.Source: Sciencedaily.com
Here is a great article from the AP which takes a closer look into the Mets using rubber bands in their teachings to all pitchers. The article says this:"Johan Santana stepped on the mound for his bullpen session, peered in at the catcher and noticed something new. There was a thin rubber band stretched across home plate, representing the bottom of the strike zone.Aim for that rubber band, the New York Mets instruct their pitchers — from Cy Young Award winners to low-level prospects. That's your visual guide."It's very different. I've never seen anything like it before," said Santana, the left-handed ace who was acquired from Minnesota last month. "It helps you focus on keeping the ball down." The Mets cite statistical research that shows big league batters hit .220 against pitches at the

Last week was the first week for pitcher and catchers reporting for spring training. Depending on the team, everyone else is joining them this week. For us, this means ticket sales are starting to heat up. February and March are really the best month for MLB ticket sales. Fans are willing to pay a premium this early in the season and whenever the team announces the start of single game ticket sales
In case you missed this on It Is High...Clemens: You want answers?Congressman: I think I'm entitled to them.Clemens: You want answers?Congressman: I want the truth!Clemens: You can't handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has baseballs. And those balls have to be hit by men with bats. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Congressman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for steroids and you curse HGH. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that HGH, while illegal, probably sells tickets. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, sells tickets...You don't want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that mound. You need me on that mound. We use words like fas
Examining my NL pitchers and who should be kept for 2008.
As usual, I pursued a "stars and scrubs" strategy when dealing with my NL pitching staff. There are legions of articles dealing with this the stars and scrubs model, so I won't delve too deeply into it here. But the aspect that bears discussion is the tactical execution of the strategy.
In my high stakes league it is very difficult to
As the Boston Red Sox look set to win the World Series, if not sweep the Colorado Rockies in four straight, it’s time for a look at the roles played by major league pitchers in comparison to NHL goaltenders.
Success at both positions relies on controlling a small hard missile that the opposing team is trying to drive forward with sticks or bats.
While pitchers are hurling 100 mile per-hour plus fastballs past, and sometimes towards, hitters, goalies are the ones facing the onslaught of rockets in hockey. Yet both represent the defensive linchpins in their respective sports.
Individual pitchers play a far bigger role in terms of their impact on specific games. This is a fact demonstrated by the odds offered by book-makers on a team, which will vary a great deal depending on the starting pitcher. No doubt a goaltender can be the difference in many a game and outstanding performance at that position is often the key to a team winning the top prize. At the very least, solid play i
With playoff baseball comes the inevitable debates about who the greatest postseason performer was. This has been especially true in lieu of Josh Beckett and Curt Schilling's recent performances in the World Series. Many people are familiar with some of the best postseason hurlers, but what about some other, less heralded pitchers? Are there guys out there who may have flown a bit under the radar? In fact, there are a number of them. While none of these guys had the extensive impact of a Bob Gibson or Mariano Rivera, they still delivered clutch performances throughout their postseason careers*. Ken Dayley, St. Louis CardinalsIf I were to ask you who in postseason history had the best WHIP (0.58), allowed the least number of hits per 9 innings (2.61) and the fourth best ERA (0.44), your firs
How far and fast the pitching staff of the Chicago White Sox has fallen. A critical contributor to the team's World Series championship in 2005, the staff has contributed to Chicago's 2007 predicament. The White Sox are in last place.
The pitchers have plunged from being tied for the American League's lowest ERA in 2005 (3.61) to 4.61 last season (10th in the league) to 4.91 this season (13th).
A look at the top 8 AL pitchers for our All-Star team.It is a rule that all fantasy news sites and blogs must list their all-stars at this time of year. Though I really don't care for the process, as it is so subjective, it is a rule and our blogosphere credentials will be revoked if we don't do our own all-star list. Matt and I will be splitting duties for this, and I will be looking at Starting pitchers and Outfielders. So holding our collective noses, here are our picks for the Al starting pitchers, in order:1. C.C. Sabathia--clearly the class of the AL field in my view, though it helps his cause that he is the anchor of my high-stakes league staff. Forget the gaudy 12-2 record; his 8.1 K rate and 1.2 BB rate show he is at the top of the class, and with a 32% hit rate he actually should be a bit better. I sure hope for him to be even better in the second half. Cy Young, here he comes.2. Dan Haren--I know it is almost heresy to not have Johan number 2, but Haren deserves the spot.
A big thank you to Rizzo Sports for bringing this to my attention. Apparently the NCAA Women's Softball World Series is taking place. No, that isn't why I am thanking them. The reason I am thanking them is that they have alerted me to the fact that there is another hot blonde doing some mean pitching down there in AZ. Her name is Taryne Mowatt (that's her in the photo to your right).According to RSW:Taryne Mowatt pitched Arizona into a decisive game 3 of the NCAA College Softball World Series last night with an extra inning 1-0 win over Tennessee. Mowatt a sophomore from Corona, California threw over 180 pitches last night and over 888 in the last week during the CWS.Blah, blah, blah-biddy-blah-blah. Is she hot or what? Is there some kind of requirement that to pitch for the Wildcats you have to be a hot blonde? Grrrrr...wildcats, indeed. Heck, the girl to her left is even hot (I think). A teammate perhaps? Rowwrrr.Damn, that's two posts in less than a week on women's softball and
It hasn't been the best of days for guys that are downright horrible at the art of pitching. The Marlins and Rockies traded Byung-Hyun Kim for Jorge Julio, while the Twins released Sidney Ponson. The Marlins trade seems to make sense on some levels because both guys are as bad they can be right now and a change of scenery might help both out, but I'm not counting on it. It's like Florida gave Colorado a bladder infection in return for some Gout. Neither party can be all too happy...With Ponson, the Twins must have just realized that they're probably better off sending a crippled lemur to the mound. Ponson had a 2-5 record to go along with a 6.93 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP. Now, I'm not the biggest number cruncher around, but even I recognize that those numbers are beyond putrid. In related crappy pitcher news, Mark Redman pitched pretty well by his standards in a rehab start tonight for the Braves in Richmond. Redman was placed on the D.L. on May 2nd because of an "ingrown toenail", which
So, you're the New York Yankees. You have more holes in your rotation than Julian Tavarez's face and you are forced to call up your most prized prospect to the big leagues. The kid comes up, and in his second Major League start, he's working on a no-hitter in the seventh inning. And then he does his best Ken Griffy impersonation....Poor Phil Hughes went from possible history in Yankee Stadium, to probably missing between 4 to 6 weeks with an injured hamstring. Letdowns like that usually only happen when women see me naked.Hughes now joins Mike Mussina, Carl Pavano, Chien-Ming Wang and Jeff Karstens as Yankee pitchers that have gone down with some sort of injury. Johnny Damon, Bobby Abreu and Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada have also been hobbled with various nagging injuries, making you wonder what strength coach Marty Miller is doing with these guys. Right now I wouldn't be surprised if his idea of conditioning was to have these guys play games of hide and seek and watch Barney Dvd
Waterloo has signed RHP Jay Broughton from Ball State. Jay was named Most Valuable Pitcher for the fall season. The Bucks also added RHP Tom Boleska of High Point University. Tom is 2-1, 3.48 with one save and 14 strikeouts in 9 appearances this spring. Ball State RHP Brenden Stines picked up his second win of the spring today, striking out seven in 6.1 innings against Akron. C/1B Brent Milleville is hitting .314 this spring with Stanford and currently has a five game hitting streak. OF Deric Manrique is hitting .316 with a team high 8 steals this spring at Northern Iowa. RHP Brandon Hennessey has struck out seven and walked one in 7 appearances this spring for San Jose State.
Chuck James and the rest of the Atlanta Braves' starting pitchers are heading into the final stage of spring training looking strong. James overcame control problems to throw five scoreless innings on Monday, lowering his ERA to 2.57 in the Braves' 6-0 win over the Cleveland Indians. James gave up four hits but walked three. He loaded the bases in the second with two walks after Casey Blake's double, then pitched out of the jam. "I definitely was reminded why we have a pitching coach again," said James, who met with Roger McDowell after every inning "so I didn't feel goofy throwing." Atlanta's starters have stellar ERAs. Buddy Carlyle, who has not allowed a run in 10 innings, is followed by Lance Cormier (1.29), Tim Hudson (1.80) and John Smoltz (1.93). Braves starters have a 2.25 ERA, allowing 18 earned runs in 72 innings. "I think a lot of the guys are ready to go," manager Bobby Cox said. Chuck JamesJohn SmoltzTim Hudson
The number of players in the race for the No. 5 starter job got smaller Sunday when the Texas Rangers said it's now a three-man competition among right-handers Jamey Wright and Kameron Loe, and left-hander Bruce Chen.
