It's really common to see a pitcher throw at a batter in baseball. People being hit and sissy fights starting may actually be the best part of baseball. This however I haven't seen. The pitcher is pissed about some calls, so at the last second the catcher ducks and lets the ump get drilled. I don't want to hear any crap about how wrong it is, because it's awesome. It rivals Delmon Young's ba

I wasn't surprised at all that this came from the Yankees, considering all they EVER do is complain. Now it seems they, or at least Hank and Mike Mussina, want to blame their ace Chien-Ming Wang's recent injury on National League rules, which have been a part of baseball since the beginning. Wang will be out probably until late September at least, only because he is way out of shape and can't run
Miguel Cabrera clubbed a walk-off, solo homer with one out in the ninth to give the Tigers a 2-1 win over the White Sox in Detroit. Kenny Rogers didn't factor despite throwing eight innings of one-run ball, allowing just four hits. Todd Jones worked one inning for his second win as Detroit swept the three-game set. It was also the Bengals' fifth win in their last six games. Jermaine Dye drove

Obviously as a drinker, this sort of video makes me happy. It's good to know there are people out there timing themselves chugging. What offends me is that he claims that it is "a pitcher" when it is completely obvious that it is a "mini-pitcher." While I know that a square is still a rectangle, this is an obvious attempt to look cooler by omitting a detail. I venture to say that I could chug
Now that summer finally seems to be coming along, maybe it would be just about time to introduce this pitcher with its crushed ice cooling compartment. You will agree, we are sure, that keeping the ice in its own compartment is preferable to pouring it into the drink itself. There it would dilute your lemonade or your ice tea or your sangria or whatever you prefer to drink on the porch on a hot da
Press Release from the Yankees:The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that New York Yankees Minor League player Angel Reyes has received a 50-game suspension for testing positive for stanozolol metabolites, a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Los Angeles Dodgers:After acquiring Fernando Valenzuela in the summer of 1979, the Dodgers assigned him to the Lodi Dodgers (now the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes) of the High-A level California League, where he posted a 1-2 record and a 1.13 ERA in limited action. In 1980 Valenzuela was promoted to the AA level San Antonio Missions. There Valenzuela led the Texas League with 162 strikeouts, and ranked third in ERA.Valenzuela was called up to the Los Angeles Dodger bullpen in September of 1980. In the last month of the season, Valenzuela helped the Dodgers to a Western Division tie with the Houston Astros, tossing 17 2/3 shutout innings of relief over the course of ten games, during which he earned two wins and a save. The Los Angeles Dodgers then lost a one-game playoff - and thus the division
Siempre se ha dicho que el beisbol es un deporte muy peligroso por la velocidad que alcanza a tener la pelota y ademas de que el material de que esta hecha es muy duro. Rays pitcher Rafael Reyes was arrested overnight after a disturbance at a cafe in Tampa, Florida. Officials say Reyes was inside the Hyde Park Cafe when he fell against a ceramic pot. According to Tampa police, Reyes thought a bystander pushed him into the pot, so he allegedly started arguing with the man, who then punched Reyes in the face. Reyes is then said to have started spitting blood and swinging his arms at people. He had to be Tasered twice by a Tampa Police officer before he calmed down. Officials arrested Reyes and the man who punched him. Both were charged and released on their own recognizance.
That is how New York Times described Cricket in its article. It has been a dream of ICC and every cricket fan that Cricket spreads its wings all over the world and especially in cash-rich USA. So the esteemed New York Times' coverage of Cricket is surely good news. With this coverage and the inauguration of cricket league among school students in New York, cricket has taken its initial baby steps in US. Cricket League On Wednesday, the Department of Education in New York inaugurated cricket as its newest league sport, with about 600 high school students. With this, New York becomes the only public school system in the nation to offer competitive cricket. No one is expecting the game to overtake baseball, football or soccer in popularity there any time soon, but a modest increase

The spring is usually a cheerful and exciting time for MLB baseball fans but today the community is bearing the bad news that one of the most celebrated pitchers of the modern era has been diagnosed with “curable and “maintainable” colon cancer and will be seeking treatment. Here is a 6′7″ Yankee farmhand who has hardly gotten any mention at all. He was invited to spring training, has dominated full innings, and has put out fires mid-inning–all quietly, with hardly any recognition. I like when this type of situation develops, because it becomes a secret weapon. In my opionion, Patterson is probably [...]
I don't think it would be a bad idea if they did. With all the what ifs surrounding the Yankees staff this year it couldn't hurt to have some insurance. Here's what Jon Heyman had to say on the topic:YankeesPotential need: Starting pitcher. Mike Mussina said his recent spring pasting is no cause for alarm. But scouts aren't so sure. They saw a fastball in name only, down from the high 80s to the mid or even low 80s and a continuing belief that he's nearing the end. The Yankees would be better off keeping Joba Chamberlain in the pen, which would keep their fantastic late-game combo intact. But to do that, they'll need not only youngsters Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy to come through, but also Mussina to remain viable. Or they'll need to look into the free-agent market, which is a lot better th
Former MVP Miguel Tejada has arrived at Houston Astros training camp being protected from the press by teammates after he was named in the Mitchell report for allegedly using human growth hormones.Tejada said: "I can't really talk about that situation. Right now, I just want to talk about baseball, because that's really my focus." According to the report, Tejada used steroids in 2003, receiving them from teammate Adam Piatt. The FBI has also launched an investigation, which Tejada also refused to answer. Of playing with the Astros, Tejada said: "I feel like I'm born again, like somebody just signed me from the Dominican."Source: ESPN
The Pitcher and Piano is moving in to the venue that was formerly Arq (Previously known as Prada Society Cafe, The Lock, The Bar....). May I suggest some sort of exorcism, as the venue is clearly haunted (by the lack of customers).A few years ago I had an informal meeting with the manager of Arq, who loved my ideas so much that he tried to steal them. I asked him how he thought he could get away with this, and he responded, strangely, with "We're owned by Luminar, I can afford to give away free drinks for months". He then cackled like an evil witch.Whathappenedlastnight Manchester
By Stephen RhodesJerry Crasnick of ESPN is reporting that MLB pitcher Joe Kennedy died early Friday morning while with his family in Florida. Although the definitive cause of death has not been determined, initial indications point towards either an aneurysm or heart attack occurring. According to Debbie Carter, Hillsbourough County (FL) Sheriff's spokeswoman, Kennedy passed out at home and was brought to a hospital; she provided no further details. A left-hander, Kennedy broke into the major leagues in 2001 with the Tampa Devil Rays. In 3 seasons with the Devil Rays, Kennedy made 72 starts, compiling a 18-31 record. All told, Kennedy, 28, in 7 seasons with Tampa Bay, Colorado, Oakland, Arizona and Toronto, compiled a 43-61 record. Kennedy was married with a 1-year old son. This hits eerily close to home, as this unfortunate tragedy has similarities to the untimely death of former Houston Astros/St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Darryl Kile. At the time of Kile's death, the

Could this be Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year? Seriously? If so, I'd think he's be a great story...Lee Jenkins of Sports Illustrated chose Washington Nationals' pitcher, Mike Bacsik, as his Sportsman of the Year. I saw live on TV when he gave up the 756th homer to Barry Bonds, and of course it is a moment now enshrined for better or worse in baseball history.Rather than some guys like Donnie Moore who head into oblivion after such an incident, Bacsik ate it up and soaked in the moment. Literally. Here's an excerpt from Jenkins' piece:The moment called for perspective, but Hank Aaron was not there to give it. The moment called for grace, but Bud Selig was not around to offer it. The moment called for humility, but Barry Bonds was not willing to provide it.And so, the moment that threatened to damage baseball forever had to be saved by a little-known pitcher for the Washington Nationals named Mike Bacsik. Yes, the man who gave up home run No. 756 is also the man who made

The baseball playoffs are just getting underway and after the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres by scoring three runs on one of the best closers in Major League history (Trevor Hoffman) for their tiebreaker game, the importance of a closer became apparent.
It is absolutely essential that the last pitcher to enter the game can hold on to his team's lead. What's more essential? Scaring the crap out of the opposing team with your song.

These are the awards that Philadelphia Daily News columnist Bill Conlin would like to see. Bill has appeared here multiple times, usually for cockamamie ideas just like this one. I know what you're all thinking: we already have the Cy Young award for pitchers. Well, Bill wants an award that includes relievers too! Wait, what are you thinking now? You say we already have the Rolaids Relief Man award? Bill scoffs at that award, so much so that he wants to make an entirely new category just because the one we have isn't good enough. When I'm King of the World...A Pitcher of the Year Award will be added to the Cy Young Award in each league. The Cy has long been the property of starting pitchers. When a relief pitcher is honored by the BBWAA, it is usually with MVP - Jim Konstanty in 1950 and Willie Hernandez in 1984 were two. But as starters play an increasingly diminished role, the closers and setup men need something a little more substantial than an award backed by an antacid. Maybe o

I'm suprised that not too many other outlets and medis mentioned this, but I just caught this in the Los Angeles Times just a few moments ago..."How ironic that Clay Hensley, the pitcher who gave up Barry Bonds' record-tying home run Saturday, was one of four San Diego Padres farmhands suspended for 15 games in 2005 for violating baseball's minor league steroids policy. ."Wow, what a link...
Florida Marlins Pitcher Scott Olsen was arrested early Saturday and charged with driving under the influence, resisting an officer with violence, and fleeing and eluding a police officer. He was booked at the Miami-Dade County Jail and released on $11,000 bond. Olsen was at the stadium before Saturday's game against the Cincinnati Reds, but would not comment on the arrest saying that there was a legal process going on, and that it would not be right to comment. The Marlins released a statement saying they would let the legal system run it's course, but that as an organization "we take this very seriously and are extremely disappointed,". Olsen was spotted by police at 3:40 AM driving 48 MPH in a 35 MPH zone. The officer put on his lights and tried to pull him over, but Olsen kept on driving going through a stop sign. He proceeded to pull into his driveway at his residence in Aventura, a suburb of Miami. He then left the car, and sat down in a plastic chair in his front yard, while th

I posted this picture just over a year ago, but it is very much what is on my mind right now.It speaks for itself, really. I can't think of any better depiction for my thoughts on education and the relationship between teacher and student. It was what I aspired to as a public school teacher, and my greatest challenge as a parent. That small flower, just beginning to blossom, will be equally damaged by drought or deluge. Deny her the opportunity to engage in meaningful learning experiences, and she will wither, failing to reach her full potential. Overwhelm her, and her spirit may be washed away in the flood.I originally got the image from Onemanbandwidth. It is buried in his archives somewhere...Hey! He seems to be pondering things as well, as he reused it just yesterday.

The father of fatally injured St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher, Josh Hancock, is suing a restaurant owned by another former St. Louis Cardinal. Dean Hancock has decided to sue Mike Shannon’s Restaurant over the wrongful death of his son according to the state’s dram shop liability laws.
The lawsuit is for more than $25,000 from the restaurant who was allegedly serving Josh Hancock drinks for 3 ½ hours after a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game had ended on April 28. Josh Hancock afterwards was driving 68 mph in a 55 mph zone and hit the back of a tow truck as he was talking on a cell phone with his blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit.
The tow truck company, Eddie’s Towing and the driver of the stalled car that was being towed are also named in the lawsuit.
Last night, the Baltimore Orioles had another hard luck loss, this time at the hands of a pitcher throwing in his first major league game. The starting pitcher for the Blue Jays, Jesse Litsch (who was in Double A) before last night, was able to pitch into the ninth inning in his major league debut and win. The Blue Jays won 2-1 last night. Thanks to solid defense, crafty pitching and groundball outs, Litsch looked masterful last night. He allowed only four hits, all singles, and walked three as well as struck out one. The Oriole offense was anemic once again, as the scoring took place in the first inning as Miguel Tejada drove in Brian Roberts in the very first inning when he grounded into a double play. Big Daniel Cabrera was the loser, although he probably had his best outing of the young season. He gave up a homer to Alex Rios on only his second pitch of the game and he gave up his only other run in the 6th innings as Troy Glaus drove in Alex Rios. Cabrera went the distanc
Sometimes you find readers in the strangest places. How about in the New York Yankees locker room just before a baseball game? That's not something that I, as a longtime baseball fan, would have ever expected to see but Yankee pitcher Matt DeSalvo seems to be as serious about his reading as he is about pitching for the Yanks.Matt DeSalvo sat in silence at his Yankee Stadium locker before his major league debut on Monday, buried in the written word. It is his most comfortable position. In his hands, he held a small book with gilded edges. It was not a scouting report, and it was not a Bible, either. It was Confucius, DeSalvo said later, and the pages were covered with circled passages and notes he had made in the margins.“It’s just what I’m reading right now,” DeSalvo said. “I like to read different philosophies, just anything, the way I see this world. We spend a whole lifetime trying to figure ourselves out. Like I’ll read a book and try to think, what’s this mean to m

I've had several requests from people who wanted to see more of my water crystal paintings (the crystal pitchers and glasses are my wife's - she inherited it from her Grandmother). This is one of the mahogany boxes lying on its side with a little brass pitcher peeking out. I painted it on a 5x5" panel because I have this wonderful frame that size which is a perfect match for the brass of the pitcher. I love it to bits! The price is for the painting framed with shipping within the US, but if you'd prefer to purchase it unframed, please email me and I will lower the price accordingly. This frame can sit on a

Monday blues? Here at Vin Vini Vino, we've got Monday Hangovers, a weekly dose of headaches, hangups and how-not-to's. Consider it your worst-case-scenario guide to wine. Grab an aspirin - we'll try not to yell.Being a baseball fan (go Cubs! go Tribe!), you'd think I'd be partial to a three-strikes policy. As it happens, I'm not that tolerant with wine. I'll try two new things in a sitting. If neither one appeals and I'm dead set on something satisfying, I move to an old standby. Simple as that. Don't misunderstand: It's important to break out of the comfort zone every so often. It keeps the tastebuds alert. But it's also only fair to yourself to return to the wines that you love.Last week, I took a chance on a Wild Horse 2003 Zinfandel (about $16) from Paso Robles. It was green, stemy, tart - not at all the juicy, fruity goodness I was expecting. Wild Horse claims to be going for something other than "monster" zinfandel, something that might actually complement a meal, but
