We're currently in a rain delay, so tonight's game will probably end pretty late (if it's played). There won't be a recap until shortly before the game tomorrow because I won't be able to post until then.Just a heads-up.Thanks for the cooperation and your patience.
PIRATES 5, BRAVES 0BRAVES 8, PIRATES 1Leave it to the Pirates to have a six-game winning streak (their longest in nearly four years, pathetic as that sounds) when next to no one in the city is paying attention. Proof? Even John Smoltz is more interested in the Penguins and their fans.Yes, the rain sent Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Chipper Jones to the luxury box confines of Mellon Arena on Sunday, but
They won Game One 5-0 but lost Game Two 8-1.That extends and ends the winning streak at 6 games. The Pirates are still two games under .500 after crawling within one for a few hours.More on the games soon.

Anyone tired of winning yet?[Recap][Video Highlights]I'm not tired of it, but I am an idiot. See the post below; I flipped out because Michaels was hitting third, Doumit wasn't starting, and I doubted Gorzo would pitch well. I also noted how Chuck James owns us.--Tom gave up a bomb to Texiera in the first inning, but was lights out after that, going into the 8th inning with no more damage. Very, v
For the fourth straight day.....[Recap]---------It's our first walk-off winner this year, right? Not the prettiest, but those are usually pretty enjoyable.-The Pirates, or more accurately, Freddy Sanchez, snapped the Braves' 6 game win streak and came away with a late win tonight.--Ian Snell was pretty puzzling in this one. He had some great defensive help early in the game on some well-hit balls, but then became unhittable. The problem: he walked 6 in 7 innings. Still, all that ended up with just one run on the scoreboard for Atlanta.---Freddy Sanchez doubled in two in the bottom of the 7th to give the Pirates the late lead (2-1), and things seemed in order with Marte and Capps at the ready. Marte came back twice in a row from 3-0 counts to get 2 outs, but then allowed 2 baserunners. Tyle
Pirates Of The Caribbean The Legend Of Jack Sparrow RipOYUNUN İÇİ GÖRÜNTÜOYUN İNCELEMESİPirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl adlı Disney filmi sayesinde, Jack Sparrow ile, pardon hemen düzeltiyorum, Kaptan Jack Sparrow ile ilk tanışmamız gerçekleşmiş oldu. Bugüne kadar hep aile ve çocuk temalı filmler yapan Disney'in ilk yaş sınırlı filmiydi. Fikir Disney'in aynı adlı gösterisinden ortaya çıktı. Gösterime girdiği 2003 yılında özellikle yapımcıların Ay Işığı Serenat'ı dedikleri, yani Elizabeth Swann'ın Kara İnci'den kaçmaya çalışıp da ne gibi bir durumda olduğunu fark ettiği şu epik sahne ile bayağı ilgi uyandırmıştı. Obligatory victory icons:AND[Recap]Well done.Another solid win today, and it's good to beat the teams you should beat. We're a better team than the Giants, but would anyone be shocked if they beat us a few times?Maybe not. We're 13-2 against the Giants in our last 15 contests with them.---Paul Maholm started and wasn't his dominant home self, but pitched pretty well minus a forgettable fourth inning, where he allowed all 4 of the Giant runs to score. Maholm ended up going 6 innings, 100+ pitches, and 4 runs. He kept the team in the game. The Pirates were able to get Maholm to an early lead with a Doumit 2 RBI hit in the 2nd.The bad 4th inning followed and Maholm would leave the game with a 2 run deficit. The offense struck in the 7th, though. Nyjer Morgan reached on a bunt. Freddy doubled. M
...Or so says author Dave Golokhov in an article appearing on Foxsports.com. The Pirates won this, their first title of any sort since the 1992 NL East Division Championship, by edging out the KC Royals, Arizona Cardinals, and Tampa Bay Rays, among others. However, in the interactive poll that accompanies the article, the Detroit Lions were leading the way at 21% when I placed my vote, followed by "I can think of worse" at 19% and then Your Buccos at 15%. The usual suspects were rounded up as examples of why the Pirates are the Pirates, most notably Derek Bell, Jeromy Burnitz, Tony Armas, and the Aramis Ramirez trade.Absent were this site's namesake, as well as Matt Morris, the Jason Kendall signing, the Kevin Young signing, the Pat Meares signing, the drafts, etc....but I guess they onl
[Box]Two wins in a row and the first series win in quite a while. Very good. The Pirates didn't exactly hit the awful Barry Zito hard, but X-Man hit a 2-run homer to account for the only score off the lefty in 5 innings.Phil Dumatrait countered with 5 innings and change of scoreless work, and would pick up his first major league win.The bullpen was great. Yates, Marte, and Capps with a somewhat shaky 9th (he gave up the run) but ended the game with a familiar GIDP from former Buc Jose Castillo.Solid win. The hitting cooled down, and the pitching picked up. Way to be.
[Recap]Every team gets their laughers in all year, but it's hard to complain when you win with such ease. This victory wasn't completely handed to us, like the Mets game last Wednesday (walks and errors). The Pirates outhit and outpitched a very poor team.Nate McLouth homered twice. Will he ever stop?Adam LaRoche homered for the 2nd straight game. He's over .200 now!!! Getting hot? [WHYGAVS]------Zach Duke was solid. He notched his first win in nearly a year (June 12). He pitched into the 8th.The Pirates had little trouble beating up the highly touted Jonathan Sanchez.--Sean Burnett made his debut in relief once the game was a blowout. He quickly gave up a homer to Jose Castillo. The same Jose Castillo who hadn't homered in like 800-some at-bats until a week ago. So, it was kind of a roug
Nate McLouth hit a pair of homers, drove in three runs and scored twice as the Pirates crushed the Giants 12-6 at PNC Park. Freddy Sanchez knocked in two runs and Adam LaRoche blasted a two-run shot to back seven-plus strong innings by Zach Duke. Duke gave up three runs on eight hits to notch his first win of the season and help Pittsburgh snap a three-game losing skid. Jose Castillo slammed a three-run dinger in the eighth for San Francisco in the setback. Jonathan Sanchez took the loss after getting tagged for seven runs on six hits in only four-and-a-third innings. The Giants have lost three of their last four games.
Other than Time Warner's single-city foray into monthly data caps, consumption-based billing has mostly been little ISPs with little monopolies, and given the market, we thought it'd stay that way. Broadband Reports is, uh, reporting that now Comcast is mulling monthly caps (which Comcast's PR guy confirms, though not the details)—something like 250GB, and then $1.50 for every GB over that. According to their source, the idea has "a lot of momentum" and it'll start rolling out in the next two months. The other part is that they're going to start ramping up DMCA notices to pirate assholes, with a total disconnect if you've gotten four letters in a 12-month period.
If this is entering the mix with Comcast's new "protocol agnostic" network management technique (in something closer to En

Arun Kumar: Pirates are robbing Bollywood of a billion dollars in revenue annually in the US, says veteran Indian filmmaker Bobby Bedi, lamenting that "the face of the Indian films pirate is Indian".
"The home video market in the US is bleeding massively with close to 95 percent of Indian films pirated," he says. "Go to any Indian store in the US and you'll see stacks of pirated Indian films," adds Bedi who has himself seen five varieties of a single film in an Indian store.
[Recap]This isn't good.I stated earlier that the Pirates had a big opportunity to pick up some wins and inch towards .500 with 4 games at Washington and 3 at home vs. San Francisco.Losing 3 of 4 to the Nats is not a good way to start. Before today, I was upset we wouldn't be doing any better than a split. Turned out a lot worse.Ian Snell had a rough first inning. He got a little better, going 6+ and allowing 4 runs. Considering the way the Pirates have been hitting lately, that seems like it should be good enough for a win, right?Nope. The Pirates' top offensive producer today was Adam LaRoche. Enough said. (Well, he did have three hits, a homer, and RBI double, but he drove in the only two Pirate runs.)The good? We're still not in last place because Cincy got pounded. Nobody is going to no
[Recap] The Pirates have played a bunch of crazy games this year. This one was no exception. Basically, all you need to know about this one was that my prediction was dead-on. Maholm has been great. Chico stinks. Somehow, though, the Nationals win. Well, the Pirates would eventually get their licks off Chico, even though they looked bad early on. Chico did not go 5 innings and allowed 5 runs. Maholm was almost equally bad. He gave up a single and homer to open the game, then three more in the 2nd. Maholm would pitch better, going into the 6th after that, but in that 6th he allowed the first two hitters to reach base, and both scored when Osoria took over the reigns. The Pirates rallied from being down 5-1, and the Nationals quickly made it 9-5 with a flurry of runs off Osor

Dynasty, you say? Yes, if you're talking about one of the five MLB Failure Dynasties. It's hard work to keep trotting out a loser with such consistency, but ESPN breaks down just how the Pirates, Orioles, Devil Rays, Royals, and Nationals have pulled it off. The Pirates blurb breaks no new ground, but it sure is interesting to see them side-by-side against organizations with similar results. The good news is that ESPN is predicting the Pirates could have a winning season by 2010. Needless to say, I doubt many of you are that optimistic. The failure dynasties [ESPN.com]
[Recap] We can say this regarding Phil Dumatrait taking Matt Morris' rotation spot: It no longer means an automatic loss every 5 games. Dumatrait actually came out throwing, opening the game with two perfect innings and giving up a run in the 3rd. Then, the lights went out. Literally. There was a 25 minute delay in the 4th at brand-new Nationals Park because many of the stadium lights suddenly malfunctioned. Dumatrait remained in the game and quickly gave up 3 more runs. He would be lifted. Luckily, that didn't matter, because the offense came out swinging against John Lannan. Well, sort of. They worked Lannan beyond belief, and eventually got through for 6 runs in the 3rd, capped by a Bautista 3-run bomb. Lannan looked terrible for a guy who had thrown 20 scoreless innings in a r

Austin Kearns singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Nationals to a 3-2 win over the Pirates in the opener of a four-game set at Nationals Park. Wil Nieves knocked in a pair of runs for Washington, which has won four in-a-row and six-of-seven overall. Luis Ayala worked a flawless eighth to pick up his first win. Jon Rauch shut the door in the ninth for his sixth save. Freddy Sanchez and Ryan Doumit each launched solo homers for Pittsburgh, which came up short for the fifth time in seven games. John Grabow allowed the deciding run to fall to 1-and-1.
[Box] Another tough one to swallow. The Washington staff held us to 3 hits. 2 were solo homers (Doumit and Sanchez). Poor work on offense tonight. Zach Duke--great job. He put two men on in the 2nd, and they came home on a ground ball single through a drawn-in infield. That was all Duke would allow in 7 great innings of work. John Grabow came in to relieve--he gave up a hit, hit a batter, and Austin Kearns drove home the go-ahead run in the 8th for the 1st run Grabow allowed all year. The Bucs hit two balls hard in the 9th, but right at Nationals. Grabow and the Bucs take a tough, tough loss, 3-2. Dang.
A trip to Shea Stadium resulted in an exhilarating 13-1 thrashing of Oliver Perez and the Fets (as in the circa-late 80's "Muck the Fets") on Wednesday for YOUR Pittsburgh Pirates.Perez surrendered two hits, five walks, and seven runs over an inning and 2/3, conjuring up painful memories of his days as a Bucco. Nate McLouth and Xavier Nady led the charge at the plate with three hits each and a combined five runs and six RBI. The sub-Mendoza Line Adam LaRoche and Jose Bautista were a combined 1-for-8, with three strikeouts and eight runners left on...and the Pirates still blew them out.The Pirates got two-hit ball from the law firm of Gorzelanny, Van Benschoten, and Meek, to go along with eight Ks (and nine walks, but who's counting?) For one afternoon, all wheels were turning.Of course, th
[Tuesday loss Recap][Wednesday Win Recap]First things first:That was a pretty wild trip to New York.We of course had the rainout on Monday, setting up a great matchup, Snell vs. Santana, for Tuesday, when nobody in Pittsburgh could watch it.Santana, arguably the league's top pitcher and pitching in one of his best chances for another special accomplishment, promptly opened the game by giving up a homer to Nate McLouth on his second pitch of the night.1-0. Bye bye, no-hitter, shutout, whatever.Johan would only give up one more hit the rest of the way. That hit was a solo shot off the bat of Jason Bay. 2-0.Ian Snell imploded in the 5th to give up 4 runs, mostly as a result of poor control. One should have been unearned, thanks to a Freddy Sanchez drop that turned a double play into nothing.B

The Battle of Pennsylvania - in this case, the Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates - if anything else, is a series dependant on offense as opposed to getting stellar pitching performances. But a funny thing happened Sunday at PNC Park - the Pirates got a little bit of both as Paul Maholm pitched a complete game and Nate McLouth slammed two home runs, leading Pittsburgh to a 5-1 win over Philadelphia. As one would expect, Pittsburgh was led by the aforementioned McLouth who went 2-for-4 with 2 HRs, 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs; not to be outdone, Jose Bautista had 3 hits and an RBI while Jason Bay, Adam LaRoche and Luis Rivas had 2 hits apiece. Maholm (2-2) got the win in pitching his best game of the season thus far; he pitched a complete game, allowing only 2 hits, an earned run, wal
[Recap] So, when we need a win, who do the Pirates want on the mound? Paul Maholm, of course. Paul was brilliant again today, and really has been solid all year. His only real bad start was a loss at Los Angeles, which could have been avoided were it not for a first inning full of fluke plays. More importantly, Maholm is stopping Pirate losing streaks, for the second time in a row today. How good was he? He went the distance, giving up one run and just two hits. 99 pitches. Pretty impressive, huh? Amazingly, though, Maholm walked 4 and struck out only two. There's still no doubt that he wasn't unbelievably effective (and efficient) though. Maholm did not make the trip to New York because his wife is due to give birth tomorrow. Pretty solid couple of days for the guy. As for the o

[Recap] Matt Morris. It's really saddening to think of just how pathetic this situation really is. Morris is the team's highest paid player. His salary takes up about 20% of the total team's salary. He's making about $10M this season. That's more than any athlete in the HISTORY OF PITTSBURGH SPORTS behind just Mario Lemiuex and Big Ben. At this point, he's clearly the worst player on the Pirates' roster. I don't think there's any question about it. Give the new management credit. Trading away this guy is obviously a pipe dream. They didn't give Morris that money, Dave Littlefield did. It puts them in a very difficult situation. They can: -let Morris keep pitching -release him and throw away the $10M -put him in the bullpen This PG article by Dejan Kovacevic is quite blunt: At

[Recap] Some people think that's the worst kind of loss. Dig yourself a huge hole early, come back to make it exciting, but still fall a bit short in the end. The Pirates did exactly that last night in a 6-5 loss to the Phillies. Zach Duke was roughed up again, which is not a good sign at all. He even walked a few too many Phillies, and gave up multiple big hits to Chris Coste and Jayson Werth rather than traditional boppers Howard, Utley, and Burrell. Duke gave up 2 runs in each the 1st, 3rd, and 4th. The Pirate bullpen (Yates, Marte, Grabow, and Capps) held the Phillies to that 6-spot, but that was one run too many for the Pirates to catch up to. The one that bothers me most after the game is the 6th run the Phillies scored. Pat Burrell laced a ball into the left field corner, a

The Pirates came back from a 6-0 hole Zach Duke dug, but couldn't quite finish the job. They scored 5 quickly in the middle innings, but the strong end of the Phillies bullpen kept the Bucs off the board for the rest of the game. The Pirate bullpen did the same, but the Bucs fell, 6-5. Exciting game after a terrible start, but that just made the finish all the more dissapointing.Legit recap and pictures from the game later.

[Recap] Tom Gorzelanny needs to get it together. Some think he might be hurt. [Bucs Dugout] Some think he may have lost his mechanics. [WHYGAVS] Whatever it is, we have a problem. We should have seen it coming when Tom walked the game's first hitter on four pitches, but (I at least) kind of forgot about the lack of control when Gorzo put up 4 zeroes in a row. He had a no-hitter and a 1-0 lead heading into the 5th inning. Though he was clearly missing some command, things didn't seem to be going too badly. The 5th was ugly. Tom walked the bases loaded (one of those being to the pitcher--on 4 pitches), then gave up his first hit of the game-a 2 RBI single from strange-looking Rule 5 pick Brian Barton. Pujols knocked home another with a ground ball single. Quickly Gorzo's game had gon
Joel Pineiro struck out six over seven strong innings to lead the Cardinals to a 5-2 win over the Pirates in the finale of a two-game set at PNC Park. Pineiro allowed a run on four hits and a walk en route to his first win of the season. Brian Barton had two hits and two RBI for the Cards, who earned a split in the series. Albert Pujols was 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI in the victory. Adam LaRoche drove in a run and had two hits for Pittsburgh, which had won its previous two. Tom Gorzelanny allowed three runs on two hits and seven walks in five frames to drop to 1-and-3 with the loss.
Tom Gorzelanny put up some zeroes early but lost control and eventually gave up 7 walks in 5 innings, allowing 3 runs. The Bucs mustered an anemic amount of offense against struggling Card starter Joel Piniero. As usual with these weeknight games, a more detailed recap later.FINAL: 6-2.
[Recap] There seemed to be some legitimate enthusiasm for the Pirates going into this game. The losing streak was over and their best pitcher was taking the mound. What could go wrong? Well, he (being Ian Snell) could not have his usual electric stuff and give up 4 runs in a 9-batter 1st inning. Yeah, that was pretty demoralizing. But Snell deserves all the credit in the world for staying calm and never giving in. He tossed 5 innings of scoreless ball after that, making for a respectable outing. Cards starter Todd Wellemeyer did not have any trouble with the first go-round of the Bucco lineup, but the Pirates adjusted the second time. Freddy, Bay, and Doumit strung together three hits to manufacture a run. Nady hit a sac fly to cut the lead to two. Next inning, Fred would get ano

[Recap] The Bucs are finally back in the win column. Nate McLouth is finally absent from the "hit" column. Paul Maholm was very solid and notched his first win of the season. It didn't start well, though. Recall Paul's first start. He gave up a homer to leadoff hitter Hanley Ramirez to open his season. Then, Paul dominated for 5 innings. Maholm started out last night's game by serving up a double to Ramirez. He then got 2 strikeouts. A single brought Hanley home, and that was that. 1-0. Ricky Nolasco owned the Pirates through 5. Maholm had the only Pirate hit in that span. Then, with 1 out, Nate McLouth drew a walk to kick off a crazy bottom of the 6th. Nate broke for second in what should have been an easy steal. Replays showed he beat the tag to second. Then, the Marlin who
The Pirates scored three times in the sixth inning and held on for a 3-2 win over the Marlins at PNC Park. Ryan Doumit had an RBI double and Xavier Nady a two-run single as Pittsburgh snapped a six-game losing streak. Paul Maholm allowed one run on four hits with six strikeouts in six innings to pick up his first win of the year. Matt Capps pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save. Jorge Cantu singled in a run in the first and homered in the seventh for Florida, which had won three in-a-row. Ricky Nolasco took the loss.
Hanley Ramirez and Josh Willingham both clubbed two-run homers to power the Marlins to a 10-4 victory over the Pirates at Dolphin Stadium. Dan Uggla hit a solo shot for the Fish, who pounded out 16 hits en route to their third consecutive victory. Mark Hendrickson allowed eight hits and four runs, but just three earned, over eight innings to move to 4-and-1 with the win. Hendrickson also got the job done at the dish, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Xavier Nady doubled and drove in two for Pittsburgh, which has dropped six in-a-row. Matt Morris took the loss, giving up eight runs in just four innings to fall to 0-and-3.
[Box]None of us were right. For the definition of "wishful thinking" see the predictions section of last post. Matt Morris is awful. 0-3. 8 runs in 4 innings. Tonight he came out throwing strikes. The Marlins hit it. Hard. The Pirate offense came from Nady, Paulino, and Morris himself. Bay, LaRoche, and Sanchez continue to struggle. The best moment of the game came when we were down 10-2 in the 8th when McLouth singled in his final AB to extend his hitting streak to 19 (every game this year). The Bucs will be in last by the end of tonight unless Houston blows an 8 run lead over San Diego.
The offense of the Chicago Cubs, by and large, is potent; Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates would illustrate that point - and then some. They exploded for 12 hits while getting some effective pitching from starter Jason Marquis as the Cubs mauled the Pirates 13-1 at Wrigley Field. Chicago's offensive attack was led by a trio of Cubs - Ryan Theriot, Geovany Soto and Ronny Cedeno - with 2 hits each; Theriot scored 3 runs while Cedeno scored a run and drove in a run. Soto drove in a run, as well. Derek Lee and Darryl Ward hit a home run apiece. Jason Marquis (1-0) picked up the win as he pitched 6 innings, allowing 6 hits, an earned run, walking only 1 while striking out 7. Pittsburgh was led by Freddy Sanchez with an RBI, going 1-for-3; losing pitcher Tom Gorzelanny got shelled
From Ed Price:Before Wilson Betemit went on the disabled list with a corneal ulcer, the Yankees had been talking about trading him to the Pittsburgh Pirates. According to an official from another team, who asked not to be named because his club was not directly involved, Pittsburgh was interested in Betemit as its every-day third baseman. Pirates third baseman Jose Bautista is batting .169.Let's hope Wilson can get healthy so we can ship him off to Pittsburgh, or Japan, or any place that will take this wasted roster spot off our hands.

As of this writing, the left-handed starting pitchers in the Chicago Cubs' pitching rotation (Rich Hill, Ted Lilly) had combined for zero wins; as luck would have it, their opponent on Friday was the Pittsburgh Pirates. Hill gave up a run over 5 innings and the Cubs scored all of their offense in the fourth inning as they took the opener in their series at Wrigley Field, edging the Pirates 3-2. A trio of Cubs - Ryan Theriot, Mark DeRosa and Reed Johnson had 2 hits each - with DeRosa scoring and driving in a run while Johnson drove in a run; Corey Patterson also drove in a run. Winning pitcher Hill (1-0) pitched 5 innings, allowing only 3 hits, an earned run, walking 3 while striking out 4; Kerry Wood picked up his 4th save. Pittsburgh was led by Jason Bay and Xavier Nady with 2 hits apiece

[Pirates.com Wrapup]Yeah, as the score indicates, this was an ugly game.Matt Morris is officially killing us in two ways. We always knew we were paying the guy too much (thanks, Littlefield) but (at least some) fans hoped or thought that he would be a mediocre, back-end of the rotation guy who can usually keep the game somewhat close.0-2 with a 7.02 ERA doesn't exactly fit that description. The Bucs' winning streak is snapped at 4 and their record drops to .500 at 7-7. Wait a sec, we're complaining about being .500? It could be worse, people.Kuo was strange in this game. He gave up a leadoff hit to McLouth (who has a hitting streak spanning all 14 games this year) and got 2 quick outs. Then he walked Bay, Nady, and Paulino to force in a run. Bautista struck out. For the next three innin
Jeff Kent's three-run homer capped a five-run fifth inning to blow the game open as the Dodgers went on to drill the Pirates 11-2 at Chavez Ravine. Andre Ethier had two hits and two RBI for Los Angeles, which trailed 1-0 until scoring three in the bottom of the fourth. Andruw Jones contributed two hits and scored twice for LA, which won for just the second time in its last eight games. Esteban Loiaza [[ lo-EYE-zuh ]] worked five innings of one-run relief to get the win. Brad Penny will get the start for the Blue Crew in tonight's finale against the Bucs, going up against Paul Maholm. First pitch at the Ravine will be at 7:10.
[Pirates.com Wrapup]YEAH!!!That was my reaction when I woke up this morning and heard the ESPN Radio 10-second summary of this game, because no, I'm not crazy enough to stay up till 1:30 AM to watch the Bucs when I have to get up at 6:00. But you can bet I was fired up when I heard what happened.Zach Duke did what he's done all three starts this year: bend without breaking. He gave up 3 runs on 8 hits in 6 innings. The alarming part: No K's. The good part: he kept the Pirates in the game. If Duke can keep this up the Pirates' rotation all of a sudden looks really promising.Jose Bautista (as Jesse correctly predicted) drilled his first homer of the year to give Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead. An ugly inning that included a balk and passed ball gave the Dodgers one back. They would scratch anothe

Nate McLouth socked a three-run homer with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to propel the Pirates to a 6-4 win over the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine. Jose Batista and Adam LaRoche singled in front of McLouth's blast of Los Angeles closer Takashi Saito. Batista earlier hit a two-run homer for Pittsburgh, which was coming off a three-game sweep of Cincinnati. Tyler Yates got the win and Matt Capps his fourth save. Russell Martin had two hits, and starter Hiroki Kuroda doubled in a run for the Dodgers, who fell to 5-and-8.

The Pirates completed a three-game sweep by pounding out three longballs en route to a 9-1 win over the Reds. Cincinnati was held to six hits Sunday, and was only able to muster four runs the entire weekend. Johnny Cueto took the loss, allowing fives runs in six innings while striking out six. The Reds are off today before opening a three-game series in Chicago Tuesday. Aaron Harang will be opposed by righty and former Red Ryan Dempster. Game time tomorrow 8:05 p.m.

[Pirates.com Wrapup]--------------------Lots and lots of positives coming out of this one. First things first: We won. Next:SWEEP!--Ok, in all seriousness, this was a key win for the Pirates. They are back to .500 at 6-6. They roughed up rookie stud Johnny Cueto for the first time in his career. Ryan Doumit greeted him with a bomb, and Xavier Nady (my vote for MVP if the season ended today) chipped in with yet another. Once Cueto departed, Bay jacked his 3rd homer, all of those coming this homestand. Quickly a close 2-0 game had become 9-1. All this without Freddy and LaRoche (well, maybe that helped). -Tom Gorzelanny pitched today without good stuff at all. All he had was a mid 80's fastball and mediocre movement, but his location was so good the Reds could not hit the ball hard
[Pirates.com Wrapup]Just a solid win.Ian Snell takes the ball into the 7th inning. Pitches well--not awesome, not bad. About what you'd expect from Ian in a tight game like this one.The Pirate offense and bullpen would do just enough to get the job done.Super-clutch hitting from--once again--Xavier Nady and Nate McLouth (a key RBI each). The other 2 came from Ronny Paulino, who actually looked pretty comfortable at the plate today, going with pitches and driving them the other way. Shockingly, he also managed to hang on to a throw home from the outfield (Nady) to tag out Corey Patterson in the first inning.Doug Mientkiewicz made his first career start at 3rd and looked fine there. I'll take him there over Bautista any day.Great use of the bullpen by John Russell. Each reliever came i
[Pirates.com Wrapup]--------------------Amazingly, I was one of the VERY few people last night who decided to head out to rain-soaked PNC Park last night in lieu of staying home and watching the Pens win again.--Also amazingly, I don't regret it.------------------------------We walked into the stadium just after 7:05, hustling up to our seats only to find the game wasn't going to start for 20 minutes. It had clearly been raining all day, but it had stopped about an hour before and we thought the game would at least get under way on time.---At 7:25, Paul Maholm tossed the first pitch. He escaped a shaky first inning with a nifty double play ball. The Pirates did nothing on offense. One note. Luis Rivas is absolutely terrible. Most of us already know this, but last night he made his 4TH ER
Three lazy misfits - very timid Elliot (Larry the Cucumber), lazy Sedgewick (Mr. Lunt) and no self-confident George (Pa Grape) - dream of the day of putting on a show about pirates. With their own problems of might not having this dream come true, they soon find themselves traveling back in time into the 17th century and begin a quest to rescue a royal family from an evil tyrant, and learn about being pirates. The Cubs used a five-run sixth inning for a 7-3 win over the Pirates last night and a sweep of the three-game series at PNC Park. Geovany Soto had a strong night at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI including his second home run of the season. Mike Fontenot also went deep and Alfonso Soriano added a pair of hits. Jon Lieber pitched four and one-third shutout relief innings to pick up the win. Starter Rich Hill was lifted after three frames, having given up three earned runs on three hits. The Cubs travel to play the Phillies this evening.
[Pirates.com Wrapup]--------------------------Wow.--Nobody would have ever guessed that this game would turn into a grueling marathon well into the night after 7 innings of this one.--Starters Zach Duke and Ryan Dempster were brilliant. Duke allowed 8 hits and 1 walk, but recovered nicely, leaving stranded men on base nearly every inning. Duke also notched 6 K's and kept the Cubs' best hitters off balance. He escaped a 7 inning, 115 pitch outing with only one run surrendered. -He was in line for the loss. Ryan Dempster tossed 7 scoreless.1 hit.---In the top of the 8th, Franky Osoria came in for some solid relief. He appeared to be out of an inning when LaRoche made a diving stop on a shot down the line, but the flip to Osoria bounced off his glove. It was right there, Osoria just didn
[NY Times]-----------Jesse:-I am very pleased to inform you all that on Tuesday, the Pirates signed Craig Wilson, their former 1st baseman, to a deal that will send him to Triple-A Indianapolis. He spent six years with the Pirates and then was traded for Shawn Chacon. Craig wanted to come back! This is why I love this guy. He had success, and we just dealt him away......but then 2 years later he still wants to play in Pittsburgh? There are not many people that pursue opportunites with the Pirates because they have been very subpar for 15 years, but this guy just clearly loves to play here. I would really like to see Craig come back and make it through the minor league system to replace Doug Mientkiewicz. I cannot speak for the rest of you, but I really want to see Craig Wilson in a Pirate
The Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates were involved in what can be described as a wild affair - 15 innings, to be exact; fortunately for Chicago, the game came to a merciful end as Felix Pie's two-run single in the 15th inning allowed the Cubs to escape from PNC Park with the 6-4 win Wednesday. Chicago was led by Aramis Ramirez, going 3-for-7 with a double, a home run, 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs while Reed Johnson went 2-for-3 with an RBI; Alfonso Soriano went 2-for-6 with 2 walks. Kevin Hart (2-0) got the win, pitching 2 innings, allowing 2 hits, 2 earned runs while striking out 1; Sean Marshall, recalled earlier from Triple-A Iowa, notched his first save.Pittsburgh was led by Jason Bay, going 3-for-5 with a HR, 2 runs scored and an RBI; Adam LaRoche also homered for the Pirates. Phil Dum
Pirates are not just featured in Johnny Depp movies these days, nor is high tech piracy limited to software. There really are still pirates some places in the world where real life pirates reside.

The Pittsburgh Pirates, without a doubt, were looking to make a successful home debut against the Chicago Cubs on Monday; however, the Pirates' relief corps failed them as Evan Meek gave up 5 walks and 2 key runs in the 12th inning, giving Chicago the win over Pittsburgh 10-8 in the Pirates' home opener at PNC Park. Kosuke Fukudome led the Cubs, going 3-for-5 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base while Geovany Soto went 3-of-7 with a double, 2 RBIs, a run scored; Derek Lee went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored while Ronny Cedeno went 1-for-5 with a double and 3 RBIs. Jon Lieber (1-1) got the win, going 3 scoreless innings while Carlos Marmol notched his first save with a scoreless 12th.Pittsburgh was led by Nate McLouth who went 3-for-6 with a triple, 2 RBIs while Jose Bautista
While we were all working extremely hard on a Monday afternoon, 37,491 of our baseball-loving friends turned out at PNC Park for the pomp and pageantry that was the Pirates' 2008 Home Opener: Donnie Iris, Bill Mazeroski, Lou Piniella, Aramis Ramirez, a former Povertyneck Hillbilly, AND a flyover. Luckily, I arranged in advance for a first-person report, and made sure my field correspondent put their photo-taking emphasis on the really interesting stuff: the action around the game. I'm sure you already know that the Pirates dug a 7-0 hole by the 3rd inning, I'm sure you know that they somehow botched a 9th-inning rally with a bizarre, two-on/one-out bunt, and I'm sure you know that ultimately, the Pirates would send their fans home disappointed with a 10-8 loss in 12 innings. So here's wha
[Pirates.com Wrapup]-----------------------An excerpt from my recap of the Pirates' crazy win in Game 1 over the Braves;-Let me start with this: last night's opener was the most ridiculous baseball game I have seen in my entire life. If anyone disagrees with me, I'd like to hear your tale.-Now, there's competition, and amazingly, it came from another Pirate opener.Yesterday was pretty darn ridiculous.----------------------------------I'll try to go in chronological order:--PREGAME:Upon entering the ballpark (via CF gate) and picking up our free magnetic schedules (Woo-Hoo), we immediately noticed the steps leading to the new, aforementioned Hall of Fame Club (taking the place of Outback Steakhouse). Since we were an hour early, nobody was on the field, and it wasn't too crowded, we heade
[MLB.com Wrapup]-----------------------A huge crowd was on hand for this one:-[ESPN]------------The Bucs avoided the brooms at the very empty Dolphin Stadium on Sunday, thanks in large part to a brilliant start from Ian Snell. Snell tossed just 6 innings but notched 10 K's, one short of a career high. Most importantly, he picked up his first win of the year, as the Bucs knocked around Dutchman Rick VandenHurk and the back end of the Marlins' bullpen. One extremely interesting move John Russell made prior to this ballgame: the lineup. Russell benched struggling Bay and LaRoche, giving Mienkiewicz a start at 1B and inserting Nyjer Morgan in center, moving McLouth to left. Morgan led off, McLouth hit 3rd, followed by Doumit and Nady (who hit his 3rd homer). It worked out beautifully. Even tho
[Pirates.com Wrapup]---------------------It was a tale of two Paul Maholms last night. That was clear in his very first inning of work.He started off his season by giving up a moon-shot to Hanley Ramirez on his second pitch. He quickly struck out the next three batters.--The Pirates and fans should be pretty encouraged from what they saw last night. Maholm scored a career high in K's (9) in only 5 innings. He looked super-effective for nearly the entire outing.--One problem: the gopher ball.--Particularly a grand slam from Mike Jacobs (his second game winning homer in two games) that snapped a 1-1 tie in the 5th. --True, it probably wouldn't have happened were it not for a fielding error by Maholm earlier in the inning, but one swing turned what should have been a fantastic outing for Pau
[Pirates.com Wrapup]If you ignored the fact that they were playing the lowly Marlins, the Pirates had every reason to lose this game. Matt Morris pitched. Jason Bay and Adam LaRoche stunk once again (combined 0-8). Freddy Sanchez and Jack Wilson both sat, and were replaced by Chris Gomez and Luis Rivas. Yet, the Bucs were indeed playing an awful team with an awful pitcher, and found themselves in a good position to win. The Pirates had leads of 3-0 and 4-3, but both quickly evaporated at the hands of the overpaid Morris. (Alright, his line after the game doesn't look TOO bad--5INN 3ER 8HIT but he still did not look sharp. Plus, he was facing the Marlins.)---Once again, the usual early-season heroes (Nady, McLouth, Doumit) did their thing to produce some offense, but after 8 innings it was
[Pirates.com Wrapup]How about 2 extra inning wins (over a solid team) in the first three games of the season! Great game for the Bucs last night, and they're now 2-1, in a tie for first place in the Central. I'm going to skip over most of the first 7.5 innings (since I did those [live]), but here are the rest of my thoughts on the Pirates' second win:-----------------So, what was that about the bullpen being a problem?[Mondesishouse]The Pirate bullpen was fantastic for the first time this year last night, coming in relief of another pleasant surprise, Zach Duke. Although he couldn't finish the 6th inning, Duke was sharp, but he still only struck out one and allowed 10 hits (but only 2 earned runs). Anyway, the 'pen was the real story. Franquelis Osoria was huge in cleaning up the mess Duke

Xavier Nady singled home a run in the top of the 10th inning to lift the Pirates to a 4-3 win over the Braves at Turner Field. Freddy Sanchez, Ronny Paulino and Jack Wilson each plated a run for Pittsburgh, which took two-of-three in the season-opening series. Wilson had to leave the game in the seventh due to a strained calf muscle. Tyler Yates pitched a scoreless inning of relief to pick up the win, and Matt Capps closed things out for his first save. Mike Hampton was scheduled to start on the mound for the Braves, but was a late scratch because of a strained left pectoral muscle. Jeff Bennett started in Hampton's place and allowed two runs over four frames. Chris Resop was charged with the loss. Chipper Jones had three hits and a run scored for Atlanta, which slipped to 1-and-3 o
