Tom has sent us in this great image of one of his own Raygun builds. “I have attached a tweeked image of one of the rayguns that I build, the “Isabel de La Vega”. I find things that remind me of rayguns, then fabricate the rest of the piece around them. The pieces end up at art shows at various conventions.”
For more information, visit Tom’s blog where he talks about his sculpts, pottery and the occasional chili recipe. More pictures of his artwork are available here. And be sure to check out his wares at DragonCon this weekend.

Chen-Bot 3000 reported live from outside the Big Brother ship for the live eviction ceremony. Beru continued flitting about in the red unitard she won in the Power of Veto competition, which resulted in a grievous audio error from Chen-Bot 3000. Chen-Bot 3000 intended to say that Beru takes the “uni” out of “unitard”. What she actually said was, “Beru, you’re a tard.” Later, the Chen-Bot froze in the middle of the live eviction and had to be replaced on the fly by a catering bot. (more…)

This is Chen-Bot 3000 reporting from outside the Big Brother ship for the live eviction. It has been 13 days since the ShipMates locked themselves away for your viewing pleasure, and now it’s time to choose. Who will stay on board and who will be evicted? Niki Sanders, the psycho cocktail waitress from Las Vegas, or Alien, the face sucking arch enemy of Predator?
Campaigning was light from both nominees all week. Niki resisted the urge to go berserk on her ship mates, and spent most of the time in tears. Alien mostly skulked around, hissing and dripping acid everywhere she went. (more…)

When I was a kid, I didn’t think it got any dreamier than Dirk Benedict as Starbuck. I also thought that Jimmy Carter was solely responsible for canceling the original Battlestar Galactica and was ten before anyone told me otherwise. Luckily, when I grew up, I took civics classes and got cable, which obliterated my misguided thinking.
Who could possibly be dreamier than Dirk Benedict? Tahmoh Penikett, that’s who. Penikett plays Lt. Karl ‘Helo’ Agathon on the new Battlestar Galactica. Helo is one of the few characters who has maintained a moral compass and acts on it, which often pits him against the fleet. Here, Penikett talks about his current film projects, and the challenges of playing Helo.

Perfect Storm was previously an online comic strip created by comic book artist Rob Jones which was recently relaunched as a print comic book. I’ve never read the strip, but luckily, the issue of Perfect Storm that arrived in my mailbox is an intro to the character and her world, so I wasn’t distracted by putting pieces together.
Erin Storm is a bad ass, independent government operative. In Book One of the Convention Series, she’s in a psychiatrist’s office and most of the action takes place in flashbacks with her narration. Unlike Lost flashbacks, these actually accomplish something.
I really like Rob Jones’ artwork in this comic. It’s clean, realistic and old school. He does a great job capturing the characters’ emotions in their facial expressions. I can’t place Erin’s face, but she looks looks really familiar, like someone I might have gone to high school with.
The artwork holds my interest and Erin is likable enough, and
I have the first three issues of lots of comic series’ in my closet. My general rule is to give a series three issues to grab my attention and get me invested in the characters. In the past few months, most comics haven’t been doing that for me, and it was getting pretty irritating. I initially resisted Welcome to Tranquility because I was feeling negative that day and didn’t feel like being disappointed again. Recently, I picked it up and immediately fell in love with it. Now I feel silly.
I really like the concept - a town that is entirely made up of former Maxi Comic superheroes and their families - and the whodunit aspect of Welcome to Tranquility. The first three issues, even though they’re dealing with a murder, are pretty lighthearted and quirky. We’re meeting the characters, learning about the retired heroes’ backgrounds through their old comics and seeing how that has played out in their retirement.
Most of them have kept the trapp

Gareth Powell is a speculative fiction writer from the UK whose work has been published in the United States, Europe and the Middle East. In January 2007, his novelette The Last Reef was nominated for a BSFA award; the novelette also placed in the 2006 Interzone Reader’s Poll for best short story. His first printed collection of short stories will be published in August 2008. Powell recently participated in the ongoing discussion of gender and genre on BBC Radio 4 and at Eastercon. Here, he talks to Pink Raygun about gender and sci-fi, smart dust and what he’d name his space ship.
PR: You seem to have become a “go-to guy” in the debate about gender and genre in the UK. How did that come about?
GLP: It happened completely by accident. Back in February, I got an email from a producer on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, asking if I’d like to appear on the show the following day to talk with Liz Williams about “whether or not science fiction is a
With a title like Mikadroid: Robokill Beneath Disco Club Layla and a cover featuring the beta version of the Iron Giant holding a lightsaber, you can’t expect much. Despite first impressions, the movie was a pleasant surprise. The lightsaber is misleading, though.
A Japanese military program is creating cyborgs during World War II. The cyborg laboratory gets destroyed, and decades later Disco Club Layla is built over the ruins. But, one last cyborg remains in the destroyed underground lab, and when the club starts having problems with it’s generator, the cyborg is awakened and goes on a killing rampage involving a lot of bullets and a katana.
No lightsaber.
In the midst of it all, an electrician and a girl who may be either a designer or a call girl - it’s ambiguous - fight to survive and to keep their clothes pristine white.
Mikadroid is well conceptualized and surprisingly well done. It won’t win any awards, but it does what it can. The characters&rsq
Samurai Chicks was like the Pussycat Dolls meets Charlie’s Angels, but with ghosts. And really bad blood effects. And possibly a message of political propaganda. The cover at the left is much different than the one available at my local Hollywood Video. The box I picked up made Samurai Chicks look like a black and white Reservoir Dogs with martial arts girls.
It’s subtitled Girls for Independence, which makes me think it should be about girl power. It has girls, those girls have power, but it’s not a girl power movie.
Four girls at a dance academy are selected to become dancing super-spies for a political terrorist group. One of their leaders is a pop star named Cocoe, who delivers messages to the chicks through her dance videos. This is nothing so subtle as subliminal messages; Cocoe uses her dance steps as sign language to say things like “Head to the alley,” and “Look behind you”.
The chicks carry out attack missions and randomly br
What would you do if you got a hold of your brother’s nose? I’d leave my brother’s nose on the shelf above the toilet in his bathroom. But, then I’d feel bad and wave it over some fresh cheesecake for him. He likes cheesecake. Is it wrong that we’re in our thirties and my brother and I still act like we’re seven years old? To suit my usually childish mood, we picked up two kids’ books by Ragnar, Got Your Nose: A True Story and Izzy’s Very Important Job, from Baby Tattoo Books at the Alternative Press Expo.
In Got Your Nose, brothers Horace and Borris engage in a battle of stinky wills that starts when Borris yanks Horace’s nose off his face and dose those horrible things to it that brothers are apt to do. Izzy’s Very Important Job is told in observation mode as she rushes to work. Is Izzy a secret agent? Is she a crime fighter? Her job is much cuter than either of those options.
The artwork reminds me of the Looney

“Tori Brenneison is a freelance illustrator who hails from the exotic locale of Cleveland, Ohio. She has run an online portfolio at www.tasteslikeabiscuit.com for the past few years and is just now managing to make the jump from amateur to professional. Her first major illustration project is a graphic novel entitled “Case Files”, which is mostly about girls who carry guns, although it’s supposed to be about love and morals and lots other things. As a matter of fact, talking about this “professional” business, you should contact her sometime to talk about art and stuff. Tori really likes talking about art… and stuff.”
PJ Haarsma, author of The Softwire and creator of Rings of Orbis is taking his ideas beyond the world of young adult books into multiple forms of media. There is already a beautifully executed online role playing game, a comic book series is in the works, as well as a movie. Here, he talks to Pink Raygun about his plans for the series.
Pink Raygun: Is science fiction something you’ve always enjoyed, even as a child?
PJ Haarsma: It was. I actually started reading horror. I went from comic books to horror novels and then I got my hands on an Orson Scott Card novel, Ender’s Game. After that, it was all about science fiction for me. In school I was a big science geek - I have a degree in science - but I was lousy in English; it was my worst subject. I wanted to be a doctor, so as soon as I could stop taking English, I did. I didn’t like what they made me read and I couldn’t spell. Therefore, the whole idea of writing, especially in the sci-fi world, always f

In an effort to generate a younger viewing audience, Lifetime (”Television for Women”) has greenlighted The Gathering, a thriller featuring a dark underground community of New York City that includes witches. The Gathering is slated as a four hour mini-series from producer David Eick (Battlestar Galactica).
The Scifi Channel has picked up another season of Doctor Who. This will be the third season featuring British hottie David Tenant as The Doctor. New episodes begin airing in the United States in July.
Cally Tyrol is either the toughest or the luckiest woman in scifi. She’s looked down the barrel of many guns, has been in front of a Cylon firing squad and even got thrown into deep space without a space suit. Nicki Clyne, the woman who gives life to Cally on Battlestar Galactica, talks about the challenges of the role and how it’s changed for her over the years.
Pink Raygun: What drew you to acting?
Nicki Clyne: I’ve always loved performing, from playing dress up to doing dance routines in my back yard; I think acting grew out of that natural desire to express myself as well as my curiosity about why people do what they do. I also feel very lucky to have had a drama teacher in high school who encouraged me to explore the power of theatre to move people and also to understand myself better in the process.
PRG: You’ve worked on the Battlestar Galactica mini-series, TV series, and the webisodes. How was working on each different?
NC: When we filmed the mini-s

I met Judith O’Dea very briefly at a local theater’s all-night horror movie marathon. She may be best known for playing Barbara in the originalNight of the Living Dead, but there is far more to her than that role. Ms. O’Dea has had a prolific career on stage and turned her acting skills into another career in oral communications training. Here, Ms. O’Dea talks to Pink Raygun about her original screenplay and her career after zombies.
Pink Raygun: You own and operate O’Dea Communications. What does your company do?
Judith O’Dea: I’ve had the company for eight years now. Its specialty is oral presentation training. I help corporate employees or anyone, for that matter, organize, visualize, and deliver an effective, powerful, persuasive presentation. I also train trainers. Let’s say, for example, that you have a certain expertise that you’ve been asked to teach, but you aren’t a certified instructor. My course gives you the trainin
